The 2nd annual “2006 Tupelo Bay Open” presented by DISConcepts LLC is now scheduled for December 9th and 10th. The official flyer will be posted at www.disconcepts.com (http://www.disconcepts.com) within the next few days but here are some of the details.
This will be a PDGA “B” tier event. The tournament will be played on both the permanent 9-hole “Par 3” ball golf / disc golf course as well as the temporary 18 hole “Executive” ball golf course. The temporary course will be unbelievable and will feature water on 14 of the 18 holes (close to the same layout as last year). Come see why some of the biggest names in the sport of disc golf made their way to the Myrtle Beach area last December for the Tupelo Bay Open (Schultz, Feldberg, Schweberger, McCree, Yoo, Crump, Frizzaks, Beaver... Multiple pictures used in the 2006 Innova catalogs and disc golf course design and construction brochures were shot at the 2005 Tupelo Bay Open (see that picture of a large group of festive people towards the back of the catalog?) That’s the Tupelo Bay Open! I’m the guy smiling in the middle! Get on it and sign up before it’s full again! What better way to celebrate the end of the season by treating yourself to a week of disc golf / golf / kiteboarding???, eating and drinking at the beach???
DISConcepts will help you with ALL of your transportation, lodging, food and golfing details (ball or disc). It is very important to US that when you are here, you area enjoying the surroundings and getting the most out of your tournament experience. We are planning special demos and instructional classes throughout the week before the TBO and look to get some of the competitors involved with teaching disc golf fundamental skills to kids in the Horry County area. I’m looking into the possibility of hosting a Pro / Am / Celebrity doubles on Friday night under the lights as well. Stay tuned!

This will NOT be a wide-open crush, crush, putt disc golf course but instead will present players with an exceptional risk and reward challenges. The layout which will be playing as a par 65, and measuring in at 9555’, has been tamed by both Barry Schultz and Brian Schweberger who last year shot rounds of 53 on the executive course. The rest of the field of 35 pro’s averaged 66.3 strokes for the week.

The golf complex features electric carts, clubhouse, new bar “The Sandtrap”, night lights, driving range, tree-lined fairways, slight elevation changes, water, and wildlife. 10 of the holes will be playing 250ft to 400ft, 5 of the holes playing 401 to 600, and 3 holes playing 601+. Check out www.tupelobay.com (http://www.tupelobay.com) for more about the golf complex. The 9-hole course is lighted until 10:00pm and the back 9 on the Executive course will lighted until 10:00pm as well each night.
The temporary course will be setup up no later than Friday morning December 8th and will be available for play Friday until 10:00pm. Only the back 9 will be lit after dark.
Email registration is BEST if possible. Please send me a message with your name, division, PDGA #, and contact information, followed as soon as possible by your reservation check. I only have room for the 1st ~100 registrants and would recommend contacting me a soon to reserve a spot. Entries will be confirmed when your registration check is received. Please do not send checks after December 3rd! Call for arrangements if you will not hit that deadline.
Feel free to post questions here, send me an email disconcepts@charter.net , or call 864-270-3723.
I am finalizing details for discounted hotels and condo’s close to the course. I will post information within a few days. Camping is also available at Myrtle Beach State Park, which is about 4 miles away from the course.

YES!

I am putting it on my schedule. The Executive course is one of the best courses I have ever played on. If you are within 300 miles, you'll kick yourself for missing this one.

glad to see this one coming back for another year. Last year was awesome can't wait for this year

I just want to be upfront about the raise in entry fees for this year. Last year’s entry for Open at $60 and Am’s at $40 did not include an electric cart, which was an additional $20 for the weekend. I wanted to give people the option to pay less and just walk. However keeping track of the carts was not much fun. So this year the carts will be included for tournament rounds on the Executive course and EVERYONE will RIDE
(which =’s cost bump). I know how much is sucks to leisurely ride around in the plush carts, but you are going to have to deal with it. When you play the Par 3 course you will walk. Carts and greens fees for practice days leading up to the event will cost extra. I am negotiating a 48 hr – 72 hr unlimited use of all facilities (ball golf, disc golf, driving range) for 1 price but don’t have the # yet. I have been cleared to have full use of the “sandtrap” bar, the new patio, and also the driving range. So look for a possible distance competition at night under the lights!

Look for your chance for a free ride to this event in 2007! I have secured the driving range at night under the lights for a distance competition, so if you can launch a disc a long ways you may want to show. Do you have an idea of a great sponsor for the event? Please send me an email or give me a call. See you at the beach!

Sorry no paypal! I have had a few people email about bringing their families and requesting information about beach house rentals. Here is a great rental company www.gardencityrealty.com (http://www.gardencityrealty.com) who can help with booking a house. House rentals this time of year are close to 1/3 the price of summertime rentals. For families, high rollers, or high-rolling families a 4+ bedroom beachfront home can be found for $750-$1300 (winter rates) for the week. However MOST rentals in the area book Saturday to Saturday (be sure to ask days offered). All of the houses on this site are about 1 to 2 miles from Tupelo Bay.

Man I can't wait to feel some heat. This cold sux. It was -5 degrees when I got up to go golfing today. With the wind it feels like -25. I can't wait to shed some coats, sweatshirts and Boots to throw a disc while wearing a T-Shirt and my regular shoes.

Is it the 29th yet?! When you are waiting for an airplane to take you somewhere warm, it always seems like it's longer than the flight back to the cold.
I'm rambling now,.... maybe I should just close the blinds and stay warm or head to the airport now and wait there. 4 days in the airport wouldn't be that bad. :D

Myrtle Beach weather forecast for this weekend and next week. Abundant sunshine highs in the upper 60’s! Let’s hope it holds for both the Charleston Classic and the Tupelo Bay Open. I will have a printed copy of rules, hole distances, scorecards, and schedule for each player when you check in. Here is a quick overview of the course rules. Some of it may be subject to change at discretion of the TD.

Rules for both courses:
-All PDGA rules will be in effect.
-All lakes on the course are “Out of Bounds”. Water comes into play on 14 holes so “stay dry” or bring extra discs.
-All cart paths on the course are “In bounds”.
-Throwing beyond the cart path (even 3 fairways over) is “In Bounds”
-Discs that come to rest in a tree will be played directly below with NO stroke penalty.
-All “Ball” golf putting greens are “Out of Bounds”. Disc must be completely on the putting surface. An example will be given at the players meeting.
-All sand traps will be “In Bounds” without penalty.

Executive Course “Special rules”

-Hole #1 any disc that crosses into the driving range (line drawn between farthest left trees) Is considered “Out of Bounds” and will require a 1 stroke penalty.
-Hole #4 special “Out of Bounds” Any tee shot coming to rest in the swamp just off the tee with be “Out of Bounds” and will be a 1 stroke penalty. Re-tee from the “Red tees” further up the fairway.
-Any shot that crosses the left side of the cart path (path in bounds, left side out) on Holes #4 and #13 are considered out of bounds and will require a 1 stroke penalty. Play from where the disc went out of bounds.

Par 3 Course “Special Rules”

-Hole #2 Any Disc coming to rest in the Bi-Lo parking lot is “Out of Bounds” Take a 1 stroke penalty and play from where the disc went out of bounds.
-Hole #3 Any disc coming to rest in the road (HWY 17) is “Out of Bounds” Take a 1 stroke penalty and play from where the disc went out of bounds. Hole #3 also has a “mandatory” which requires a shot left of the marked tree. A shot missing the mandatory will require a 1 stroke penalty and a re-tee until each time the “mando” is missed.
-Hole # 9 any disc coming to rest in the entry road is “Out of Bounds” and will require a 1-stroke penalty. Play from where the disc went out.

I will have a complete line of Innova discs for sale for those who misplace shots into the water.

DISConcepts
Nov 26 2006, 08:11 PM
Shotgun start for both days, but cart partners and hole number starts can be requested on Friday or Saturday morning. If you are looking for a possible two-some or four-some I can make it happen for the 1st day, but score will decide groups on day 2.

DISConcepts
Nov 27 2006, 09:33 AM
Practice rounds on Friday will cost additional. I will have to check with the course to see what it will cost. Typically this time of year (off-season) the Executive course costs $25 to play “ball” golf with a cart. I know they will be running a deal but not sure yet what that will be.

Got nothing to do with the thread but I feel compelled to tell you that "Fishead" Tim is right up there in the top ten of all time nicknames. Other favorites "Toe" Hearn (because his big toe and the next one were fused), "Blue Tick" Stevenson (a coon hunter), "Pint" Johnson (because he generally had one in his back pocket), "Pooldoo" Tomkins (because that was the sound a stick of pulpwood made when it fell off the truck and hit him in the head), "Lefty" Burke (who had no left arm, OK I made that one up, but he's out there somewhere) :D

IG's owner sold the course and the new owner doesn't want the baskets. I don't know if it's a matter of not wanting baskets or not wanting to pay for them. Maybe the club could do something to get baskets back there...? The new guy takes over early next year.

At the meeting last night we talked about IG.The way I understood it,and I may be wrong, The new owner doesnt want anything to do with Disc Golf . We also talked about the possibility of buying the baskets, But the bottom line is the club just doesnt have the funds to do so right now. Losing Inland Greens is a travesty.Unfortunately I dont think there is anything anyone can do to stop this from happening.

Here is a quick update for the Tupelo Bay Open. The executive course will be open for play on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only. $10 walking fee and $20 with a cart. Call the course to get a tee time (1-843-215-7888) if you plan on playing before 2:00pm. After that the course empties out and should be free of most “ball” golfers and you should be able to get right on.

We will be under a frost delay for starting on Saturday (Sunny but cold). Players will not be allowed out on the course Saturday morning until the course superintendent has cleared us. I am expecting a 10:00am start time. Please still be there early if you have not pre-registered. Due to the delayed start we will play 18 holes on the Executive course and 9 holes on the par 3 as one continuous loop. (27 holes straight). With a 10:00am start, expect to play until 2:30 or 3:00 without a break. Feel free to bring your lunch out on the course with you. There is a Bi Lo grocery store next to the course if you need to stock up.

One of the baskets has disappeared (stolen) over the last few months. Matt Peckham will be bringing a portable to replace it, but if someone else could bring another for a practice basket that would be great. Give me a call if you can (864-270-3723). There is still some room for people to play in the event. If you would like to play please call soon! I will be taking registration, late payment, and group sign ups at the course on Friday 2:00-6:00pm I will be updating the registration soon!

if the rounds were separated, only the executive course round would count. Only rounds with at least 11? holes can obtain player ratings, I believe. Since there was no break between rounds, there shouldn't be a breakout anyway. 2 rounds of 27 unique holes.

bschweberger
Dec 11 2006, 04:46 PM

ck34
Dec 11 2006, 05:04 PM
A clever TD might consider combining the two 9-hole scores to make an 18 and do the other 18s separately on the TD report, if that's what I'm hearing?

ck34
Dec 11 2006, 05:08 PM
This only works if the 9 and 18 scores are available separately. If it's a 27-hole round with shotgun groups scattered around the course, it doesn't work unless the TD is really motivated and manually goes in and tallies up the scorecards into the proper 9 and 18 hole groupings.

bschweberger
Dec 11 2006, 05:24 PM
That was done Chuck....so maybe Pat can do that for us. That would be Awesome. Could possibly be a 1100 rated round. 53 on the same course last year was 1070.

johnbiscoe
Dec 11 2006, 05:31 PM
...or we could just pick the best 18 holes of the 27 and rate those... i shot 12 really good holes in an 18 hole round once years ago, maybe we could count those as a round unto themselves as well.

love ya schweb, but you should have to get your 1100 round the old fashioned way...

fix the merce/lugo ratings swap and the ratings may also migrate a bit. click on either player for their stats to see what I mean.

ck34
Dec 11 2006, 06:47 PM
It's extra work for the TDs with 27-hole layouts to break them out into 9 & 18 and sometimes it's way too risky, especially if you're not sure players entered scores starting on the correct hole. But I would prefer to always have 18-hole rounds for ratings since it's the most fair way to compare stats, at least for courses in the same SSA range.

DISConcepts
Dec 11 2006, 07:07 PM
Scores have been updated reflecting 3 - 18 hole rounds. Round 1 Executive, round 2 combined par 3, round 3 executive. If I need to put the info back to the 27-hole layout that’s fine as I have both scoring layouts. Either way nice 1079 round Schweb and course record as well! FA-REAL

If we did ratings the most appropriate way from a math standpoint, no rounds except 18-hole rounds would ever be rated so they are all on the same basis. So, whenever two 27-hole rounds can properly be broken into three 18s, it provides better not worse ratings info for players.

A million dollars would be a nice start...lol

I am trying to line up 18 baskets right now. As soon as I am sure we can get baskets and plastic I will make the decision.

One of the issues with this event is that the fees that have to be paid to the course are fairly steep. I just want everyone to understand that this isn't like playing a tournament in a public park. Last year half of the Pro entry fee and 2/3 of the Am entry fees had to be paid to the course.

That leaves very little for payout. Unless y'all (this means every player that wants to play in this event) can come up with sponsorship cash from other areas.

If every player were able to track down $50 worth of sponsorship (in addition to their entry fee) that would offset the costs that have to be paid to the course. I would be happy to compile a list of sponsors and advertise for them at this event.

Interested in the layout, checkout my overview map. First 3 holes are reds, hole 1 is red, then 2 pink, 3 pink, 4-6 are Orange, lt. orange, lt. orange, 7-9 are greens, 10-12 are blues, 13-15 are purples, 16-18 are magentas.

Hole distances are not known, but first hole is 770?, and the longest is about 900, which is 15.

Zonedriven is the official sponsor of the 2007 Tupelo Bay Open.

They have been kind enough to stamp a limited number of Champion fund raisers and Pro Line fund raisers. They are all Destroyers.

Please go to www.zonedriven.com (http://www.zonedriven.com)

Or track me down. I have a very small amount of them. I have:
1 - clear champion
1 - yellow champion
1 - rose champion
1 - neon pink champion
2 - purple champion
2 - neon orange champion
2 - green champion
10 - white pro line

Thank you Zonedriven!!!

Stack,

Unfortunately in this area the cryztal buzzz doesn't sell very well. The last time I had some I never sold them all.

I still have some if you want them.

The Destroyers will be $25
