Maybe you'd find greater acceptance in the friendly confines of Yadkin County. We've actually adopted a Buckeye as our mascot. Of course he thinks he's the club president, but it keeps him happy. :D

Nov 26 2007, 05:29 PM
The driving range will most likely be off limits before rounds as there is no real safe way to retrieve discs. The last 2 years there was a slight delay due to frost on the course early in the morning. If there is no frost delay players will be able to warm up out on the course. I hope to set up the course earlier in the week (Monday or Tuesday) if they will let me. I will know by tomorrow. The last 2 years I was allowed to set-up on Thursday morning so that should be the latest. The back 9 holes are lighted up until 10:00pm.

To bad there seems to be no promotion of this event in the town or even the course where this will be held. We are trying to get a public course in the MBeach area instead of this miserable 9 hole pay to play course. If you're gonna bring the show to town it would be cool if someone at the course knew something about it. Especially after the big post that Disconcepts posted as the kick-off for the event.

dont know much about the politics/history of things but it seems to me that someone local should be running this tourney so someone from out of town wouldn't have to... then someone local could be advertising things and getting the word out.
Kirk seems to be stepping up and running things because nobody else wanted to and instead of letting the ball drop and not have this 'player favorite tourney' he's putting himself out by running the show.
like i said... dont know the history and what you or others might've done in the past w/ this tourney or with trying to get a course in Myrtle ... just wouldn't want to see anyone down someone for volunteering to run an event
and the discgolfconcepts post that started this thread is regarding last years tourney

Let me clear some things up.
I asked Pat Farrell if he were going to run Tupelo Bay this year. He said he didn't have time this year. I asked if he would mind if I ran it this year. He gave me his blessing.
I pulled together a team.
Mike Norris is handling registrations (PayPal, mailed in registrations and posting the pre-reg list on the PDGA Tour page).
Mike will also be my MVP when it comes to handling scores and figuring out the payout.
Pat Farrell is handling course setup.
Paul Bergey is handling fund raising through Zonedriven.
Innova is supplying the baskets, they are the same ones being used in Charleston this weekend.
Zonedriven is handling CFR sales.
Vince Cronkey is the Tupelo Bay Manager and he is excited that we are having it again this year.
I am managing the entire project via phone, email and the Discussion Board.
I do not reside in Myrtle Beach or SC. Nor do I know any players that reside there. So, drumming up support for the event in that area is nearly impossible for me. That is why I posted all the specifics here. Hoping that anyone that might be interested would use the information to drum up support.
As for promoting the event the easiest way for me to promote the event from Raleigh was to post it here on the Discussion Board. Also, I have been announcing it at all of the PDGAs I have been to during the last month.
It isn't easy running an event locally. Running an event remotely is even tougher.
If anyone has any complaints or problems with anything to do with this event please bring them to me. Please do not harrass the volunteers that have been kind enough to step up and help me pull this together. I will try to fix any problems that may occur. Please keep in mind that I cannot and will not make everyone happy. However, I will try to fix any issues that are brought to me. If you don't make me aware of any issues please don't bother to complain about it after it is too late.

Let me add some reasons why I am running this event:
I like this course.
I like getting to ride in a cart for the entire weekend.
I like playing a course that is over 9,000 ft. and not being exhausted Sunday afternoon.
I like not carrying my bag all weekend.
Now, back to my regularly scheduled tirade...y'all need to sign up in advance. I need to give the folks at Tupelo some idea as to how many players are coming.
Starting in 2008 any event that I run will require pre-registration. There will be no exceptions. I will not accept any excuses why a player couldn't pre-reg for an event. If you can't plan more than 2 days in advance then you won't be playing in any event that I run. Right now that will include the Pro Crosstown and the NC States.
Kirk

Never been to Myrtle Beach. Sounds like a quiet little coastal town. Anything to do there?
And Kirk, I can fix you up with a cracker jack cart driver. Do you know Jason Land? :) Quite the cart jockey, keeps at least three wheels in contact with terrafirma at all times. Not sure if his driving style will be inhibited by daylight though. He generally prefers cover of darkness, glow stick head lights and dodging trees by feel. Whhhhummmppp...... Kirk,
Thanks again for taking on this wonderful event! I too LIKE the course and venue for the reasons you listed. Can't wait to play in my 1st Tupelo Bay Open. Yes, it is quite a juggling act hosting an event hours away from where you live. Your organizational skills are top notch and I am happy to be able to help in any way. The best thing that disc golfers in the Myrtle Beach area can do to promote disc golf in their area is show up at the event. Bring your friends and have a good time. All skill levels are welcome and course layouts will be adjusted to your division. Bring your families out to watch the action, call the newspaper and radio stations and tell them what's going on. Come out Thursday and Friday and play the course. Sign up to play.
Sidetrack....
The Myrtle Beach area while being one of the top golf destinations in the world is without a public park disc golf course? Land is very expensive and has been snatched up by hotels, golf courses and strip malls long ago. Brent Taylor who is the Horry County, SC (Myrtle Beach to Surfside) Parks Director is VERY pro disc golf and well educated about the construction of courses. If there were local disc golfers looking to try and get a course going at the beach, contacting Brent would be your best bet. Also look into getting disc golf installed on OTHER ball golf courses in MB (preferably a long technical course with loads of water, elevation, and wildlife). If you find a course that is interested and needs help selling the idea I would be glad to help or you could contact the guys at Innova in Rock Hill as well. There are over 100 golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area go find a new one we can PLAY!
Sign up for the Tupelo Bay Open and come play this incredible layout!

DisConcepts... Thanks for your reply! Do you have Brent's contact info.
Capt. Kirk, I'm not sure why you felt the need to ask me not to harrass your volunteers. I'm just asking for some exposure at the local level. This website is great, but not everyone is in the PDGA or even knows what it is. I only recently joined myself (August). I literally live around the corner from Tupelo Bay and play it very very regularly and I had no idea there was a tournament coming up until I saw a CFR disc on ebay last week. When I walk into the Pro Shop with the disc and inquire about the tournament you would think I asked if I could buy a bootleg copy of an alien autopsy video. One staff member actually told me the disc must be a misprint. I don't think a poster on the wall is too much to ask for an event of this caliber.
Guys, Myrtle Beach is no quite little beach community, we have 2 local TV stations, a very well read newspaper, as well as at least 6 major market radio stations. We have well over 100 stick golf courses, over 50 baseball/softball facilities including Cal Ripken Experience park. We have 2 large State Parks, a large Municple Golf course that was a Land to Park grant from the closing of MBAFB as well as extensive public and private redevelopment of the remainder of the MBAFB land. This redevlopment has already included a lot of recreation areas and more are coming. We need to be strong in this next wave of planning.
With the addition of the Hard Rock theme Park & new Sports Arena at Coastal Carolina things are only getting bigger, while MB is tempoarily focused on more diverse recreation we need to make sure we are on the front page whenever possible.

I am not trying to be difficult (everyone knows that I can be when needed) however, if there were enough of a demand for this event from the LOCAL PLAYERS then this event would be held and run locally rather than remotely. Having spoken to the facility manager the majority of inquiries (and there haven't been that many) about this event have come by phone and most of those were not SC phone numbers.
Believe me, I would love it if MB or the MB area were to get another course. I was extremely disappointed when Harbor View was pulled. It was only 20 miles from my in-laws in Brunswick County NC. I am down there fairly often. I would love another course to play besides Castle Hayne. No offense to the House of Payne folks, as it is my 2nd favorite course in NC. I just like a little variety. The facility manager at Tupelo told me that Harbor View was pulled because it had NO activity.
Nothing will happen ANYWHERE unless there is a core group of LOCAL PLAYERS constantly trying to get courses installed. It may even come down to the point where someone will give in just to get you to leave them alone. That means making phone calls to city and county officials, going to Parks & Rec meetings, city council meetings, calling local golf courses etc. etc. etc. I know all of this can be frustrating. I have been trying to get a course installed in a park for 10 years. That is 10 years while Disc Golf has been on the Master Plan for this park for 11 years.
I am sorry that it seems like I am not doing enough to promote this event in the MB area. I guess the bottom line is I am selfish and I am running this event for ME!!! I want to play this course. I want to ride in a cart all weekend. I don't want to carry my bag all weekend. I don't want to be tired after throwing 9,000+ feet. Does anybody see a pattern here...I, I, I, I It's all about me and always has been....lmao

Sorry, Im not even playing this event, but I have to say something.
Is someone from Myrtle Beach honestly complaining about lack of publicity for an event when a guy from 3 hours away has to step up and run the event?
I agree, something should be posted in the clubhouse, given to local media, all that jazz. Feel free to mention that 2 time world champion and 3 time USDGC champion Barry Schultz has come to this event. USDGC champion, European Open Champion and Players Cup Champion Dave Feldberg has came. 4 time Masters World Champion Brad Hammock has came.
Dont sit around complaining about lack of publicity for an event in your home town unless you yourself have done something about it. I know Ive seen Kirk post the flyer on this very thread about 6 times just copy and paste it into word and post it at the clubhouse, email it to some news people.
Im sure Kirk would have posted flyers at the clubhouse if he wasnt, I dont know, 3 FREAKING HOURS AWAY FROM IT!

Bro you are in for a lot of greif on this website if you keep posting the way you do. have you ever heard of sarcasim?? i am sure jamie (riverdog) was using it when he posted that. Once again it is not up to us here in North Carolina to promote an event Kirk is running in your town YOU PROMOTE IT. Kirk and his staff are doing enough. Kirk is throwing this event for one reason so we can come play a tournament on a great course Pat (disconcepts) created. if you don't feel like it is getting enough exposure do something about it instead of pissing and moaning on this thread. The tee locations and target placements offer a nice balance of shots needed to score well. Most of the holes have nothing to do with crushing it off the tee but more to do with placement off the tee and accurate upshots. A player who throws 300 to 375 accurately off the tee should play this course well. Water comes into play on 14 holes and all greens will be out of bounds. However sand traps, cart paths, and three fairways over are ALL INBOUNDS at Tupelo Bay. It's fun to get a little reckless and risky on this course to find a line that works. Yanking a shot into the next fairway and saying you were planning on the route are part of the strategy here. In the last two years I can't remember one single complaint about the course but can remember scores of stories about the shot that made someones weekend.
A good number of the target locations are set on mounds surrounding the (ball golf) green. So many putts and upshots challenge the player to take into account for a roll to the lake or onto the green factor. 2 holes in particular #4 and #12 are some of the best par 5 holes in the game. Challenging and accurate tee shots with placement 2nd shots will net a birdie and the occasional eagle can be had. But these holes will also punish with a hockey stick, snowman, or worse. Scores of 7,8, 9, 10, and 13 have been had on hole #5. Aside from the challenge of the course and the beauty of the property the course sets up fun for just about any skill player; even if you end up throwing 12 of you favorite discs into one of the lakes, you will have a memorable time. Par is a great score. A few open players can shoot 5, 6, or 7 down. And freaks like Schultz, Schweb, and Feldberg can go as deep as 12 down! But even the best disc golfers will get eaten on this course and head back to their car looking for replacement discs. Are you in ???

Let me break this down so the flame squad can understand it. I DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS EVENT UNTIL THE FRIDAY AFTER THANKSGIVING. I'm disappointed because I play Tupelo Bay every week, usually more than once a week, never heard a word...I even asked about it. I WOULD LOVE TO HELP, but I can't just up and start promoting this on my own with no info. Instead of Hey glad to see theres finally someone in Myrtle thats fired up about the sportwe could use another hand all I have gotten here is a bunch of overly defensive rhetoric about how I should keep my trap shut.
I've only been a PDGA member since August...there was no big arrow pointing me to this page to keep up with tournaments happening right under my nose. I have already started my efforts for a public course here, meeting with City & County Councilmen & the Chairman of the County Planning & Zoning commission. When I joined the PDGA I asked for some help in the note portion of my application...not a peep...but I did get my dues renewal reminder.
By the way my quite little beach community comment was not directed at the Riverdog I just used his terminologyI was pointing out that MB had some very good media possibilities.

I'm not sure if I made my points very clear.
1 - The facility was emailed a flyer. I have no control over whether they post it or not.
2 - With no known organization or players I had no one that I could contact in that area to get the word out.
3 - With no public courses in the area I had no place to get a flyer posted.
4 - I used the best methods available to me. That was getting the event listed on the PDGA Tour page, posting the flyer on the Discussion Board (which now seems like a mistake) and last but not least word of mouth at PDGA events.
Michael, I am fairly certain you called me. When we spoke on the phone I believe I was very excited about the fact that there was a group (no matter how large or small) that was interested in Disc Golf in MB. I still am excited and I am more than glad to offer assistance.
I do understand your concerns about no promotion for the event in the town where it is happening. However, given the circumstances (short time frame, remote planning, no known organization to work with, no contacts in the area, etc.) I did the best I could with what I had to work with. I will not apologize for doing the best I could with what I had to work with.

Welcome to the fray Michael. Don't be put off by the message board responses. It's easier knowing where folks are coming from and interpretting tones/nuances of words on the screen if you've actually met the other guy. Can't speak for anyone but myself, and not very well even then, but if my lips are moving or I'm punching keys, assume I'm being a smart arsch and, usually, not in a mean spirited way. I'm pretty sure it's a genetic thing. My mama always argues that point. Daddy's dead and has ceased to provide input on the subject. On the other hand, could be environmental. I spent an awful lot of time with the old dude.

Let me see if I can make this even more simple. Can you possibly, with no further defensive jargon, send me a copy of whatever you sent Tupelo Bay... I assure you, with the amount of money we spend there, that friggin' flyer will be posted. If you have any signage please send that. I have several large format printers at my disposal and a few places that will let me put small 11 x 17 posters. Anything you can give me that would help me get my friends at WBTW to send a camera crew over, who what when where, best times to cover etc. Sponsors, sponsor artwork, yadda yadda yadda.

Michael... dont see you or any other Myrtle Beach guys on the prereg list yet... are you going to be able to play or know any others that might? it would also be a great way to support the event.
one other thing I was thinking of would be to start a Myrtle Beach Disc Golf Club (if there isnt one already)... it would help to give you guys a central voice and give people like Kirk trying to help a place to go to with information on a tourney like this. Shouldnt be hard @ first... really good way to start would be to get all your friends together that play... then post a flier @ trophy lakes and start spreading the word on the message boards and to everyone you see out on the course.

This is the kind of stupidity TD's have to deal with:
A player leaves a message on my cell phone. I call him back. Here is the conversation:
Player: "How long is the drive from Washington D.C. to Garden City SC?"
Me: "I don't (expletive) know. I have never driven from Washington to Garden City."
Player: "Is it right off from I-95?"
Me: "Not even close."
Player: "Oh, so Garden City is in the Mountains?"
Me: "No, do you know where Myrtle Beach is?"
Player: "No. How far is it from Durham?"
Me: "About 3 hours. How did you get my name and phone number and how did you find out about the tournament?"
Player: "From the PDGA website."
Me: "Oh, so you have a computer?"
Player: "Yeah, I have a computer."
Me: "So why don't you go out to the (expletive) internet and type in Garden City on (expletive) MapQuest?"
That is an actual conversation that I had with a player while I was driving to Charleston this past Friday night.

You have to admit that in the internet age that kind of a conversation only means that the Player is either extremely stupid, lazy or both.
It did make for some great story telling. 100% of the people I told that story to this weekend suggested either MapQuest or Google Maps before I got to the part of the story where I suggested it.

I most definitely know what you mean. My attitude when confronted with idgits isn't far from your's. That's why Frannie answers the phone when 2 a.m. "emergency" calls come in.
Idgit: We have a "wild bunny" on our porch.
Frannie: (Takes five to ten minutes patiently explaining
why a wild bunny on your porch does not
constitute an emergency)
Idgit: So your saying your not coming out?
Not kidding at all, has happened numerous times over the years with the wild bunny being substituted for everything from flying squirrels to 'possums. Idgits.

Rules for both courses:
-All PDGA rules will be in effect.

-All cart paths on the course are "In bounds".
-Throwing beyond the cart path (even 3 fairways over) is "In Bounds"
-Discs that come to rest in a tree will be played directly below with NO stroke penalty.
-All "Ball" golf putting greens are "Out of Bounds". Disc must be completely on the putting surface. An example will be given at the players meeting.
-All sand traps will be "In Bounds" without penalty.
Executive Course "Special rules"
-Hole #1 any disc that crosses into the driving range (line drawn between farthest left trees) Is considered "Out of Bounds" and will require a 1 stroke penalty.
-Hole #4 special "Out of Bounds" Any tee shot coming to rest in the swamp just off the tee with be "Out of Bounds" and will be a 1 stroke penalty. Re-tee from the "Red tees" further up the fairway.
-Any shot that crosses the left side of the cart path (path in bounds, left side out) on Holes #4 and #13 are considered out of bounds and will require a 1 stroke penalty. Play from where the disc went out of bounds.
Par 3 Course "Special Rules"
-Hole #2 Any Disc coming to rest in the Bi-Lo parking lot is "Out of Bounds" Take a 1 stroke penalty and play from where the disc went out of bounds.
-Hole #3 Any disc coming to rest in the road (HWY 17) is "Out of Bounds" Take a 1 stroke penalty and play from where the disc went out of bounds. Hole #3 also has a "mandatory" which requires a shot left of the marked tree. A shot missing the mandatory will require a 1 stroke penalty and a re-tee until each time the "mando" is missed.
-Hole # 9 any disc coming to rest in the entry road is "Out of Bounds" and will require a 1-stroke penalty. Play from where the disc went out.

Course is UP and will be OPEN for play starting tomorrow. Big thanks to Mike from Innova and the mighty INNOVAN for helping with the transport of the targets. I will set the tee locations tomorrow morning. A few holes may change a little but overall most will be the same. #7 will be 60 longer, further right, and closer to the edge of the lake. #9 will be longer bringing the hidden water behind the green into play. #10 slightly shorter and left. Im also making some changes on the Par 3 course. Possibly expanding #3 and #8 into par 4 holes.
Anyone interested in Doubles on Friday?
If people are interested Kirk and I would be up for hosting doubles starting at 3:00pm on Friday. The plan is to play the Executive Course front 9 holes, stop for burgers and drinks (all you can eat on us), play the Executive Course back 9 under the lights, play the Par 3 under the lights, and pay the winners. Should be done by 7:30pm. Courses will remain open until 10:00pm with holes 10 -18 lighted on the executive course and 1-9 on the Par 3. $10 per person plus greens fees. Burgers and Drinks at the turn FREE for doubles players. Find us in the Sand Trap Lounge between 2:30 and 3:00 on Friday to get signed up.
I have invited the Horry County Parks Director Brent Taylor out to the event on Saturday. He is excited about disc golf and understands course design and construction. He is interested in talking to players about the sport and how it could best fit into the Myrtle Beach Parks program. If you are playing in the event and get a chance to talk with him feel free to share your thoughts about the sport in the area and make suggestions as to how the game can be included in the Horry County Parks system. If you live in the area use this opportunity to talk with some of the guys from Innova about how to bring the EDGE Educational Disc Golf Experience into your school or club activities.

NEWS FLASH
In an effort to help the course manager plan for the weekend we are no longer offering any Am divisions below Advanced. To re-phrase that the only Am divisions offered will be Advanced divisions.
At this point in the process it really shouldn't be an issue since there haven't been any Intermediates that have signed up.
All Pros (Open, Masters, Women, etc.) and all Advanced (Advanced, Advanced Masters, Advanced Women, etc.) will play 3 rounds of 27 holes. We will play the 18 hole temporary and the 9 hole permanent course in one loop. 2 rounds on Saturday and 1 on Sunday.
For those of you that may be upset with this decision please don't waste your time and typing skills. If it were that important to you then you should have signed up before this.
I need Johnny Storm's suit. Flame On!!!

If you play the course before Friday, play from where the white tee markers are. I just finished playing the course and have to say that it is in the best condition I have seen it in from last three years. All of the low marsh areas that are typically wet, are dry and trimmed clean. The waters edge on each of the lakes is clean and defined, and the grass is GREEN and lush. The course is lighted until 10:00pm on holes 10 - 18. I will be adding some length off the tees and revised target locations on a few holes but the overall layout will be the same as the last two years. The Par 3 (permanent 9 hole course) will have longer tee locations and holes # 3 and #8 will be par 4s making it par 29.
Executive layout Par 65
Par 3 layout Par 29
Par for the 27 hole layout Par 94.
Playing 3 rounds of 94 = Par 282 throws to stay even with this course.
Random draw doubles are on for Friday at 3:00pm. $10 per person + greens/cart fees. Kirk and I will be hosting burgers and drinks for doubles players FREE of charge (at the turn) in the Sand Trap lounge and new outdoor patio. Sign up between 2:30 and 3:00.
Is it snowing where you are at today? The Myrtle Beach airport is 5 miles from Tupelo Bay in Garden City. I want to go sooooo bad. But, with nobody to travel from Augusta with, nobody to share expenses (room) with, and a Christmas party Friday night that I cannot miss that ends around midnight, I'd have to leave my house at 4AM Saturday morning and drive 4-1/2 hours on 3 hours of sleep & hungover and play 2 rounds of 27 holes on a very long course that I've never played before. Oh, and I'm sure I couldn't miss hanging out with TT and ZZ at the Pink Pony that night so sleeping Saturday night is out of the question. I'm not sure my 40+ year old butt can hang like it once could.

Sea Captains House on 30th Ave N and Ocean Blvd in MB is usually always good but may have a wait.I usually eat with my family when I am home at least once a year there and it is on the ocean. I have not eaten at Drunken Jack's in several years but it usually is also good as well as Divine's Fish House in Murrells Inlet. All three have good reputations and are all owned by families who grew up in Horry and Georgetown Counties.
