A new course is slotted to be done at the end of this month in Williamson County. I was given the grand tour and I have to say this will be a great addition to the area.
The course is covered in BIG oaks and is a Houck design. The county has done the majority of the work and very close to completion. This Saturday will be your opportunity to see their product. We need people to show up and help haul cut limps off and line walking paths with rocks. The baskets are bought and next week the holes will be dug. So we will sink the baskets the following Saturday.
Directions: from IH35 go west on 1431 and take a left at county rd 175, the park is on the right. Go in main entrance, the course is across the street of the flag poles.
Park in the lot just down from the flag poles.
Time: 9:00am and we need bodies with gloves and some loppers.
The city will have gators and hand tools we need.
Williamson community service will bring some people out, but we need people.
Pm me if you can make it, I need to have a head count

Lots got done!
Most of the cuttings was hauled off and lots of bobcatting was done.
Thanks goes out to:
Eddie's ability to drive a bobcat.
Mike Olse for marching around touching everything
Mike crump for loading enough tree limps to build a cabin.
And I just laid around in the sun enjoying the day :D
This coming Saturday is the BIG work day.
Tuesday the holes for the baskets will be done, Thrusday the concrete delivered. Saturday 18 baskets will be planted and fingers crossed the city will have the tee boxes dug out during the week.
I am working on having lunch there so pitch in and enjoy the day.
PM me if you need directions

By the way, what is your opinion on the course, without officially playing it, of course?

This course is pretty much the Meadows in Wimberley without the creek and pond. Yes, better than anything in austin or Round Rock.........

There will be some lopping to be done. Other than loppers, just gloves and maybe a few extra shovels. The county folk will have a bobcat out there to help smooth out the boxes. They will also be supplying some gators and trucks to haul the concrete and water around. All 18 holes for the baskets were dug today. Course is looking good.............

This new course reminds of the meadow course at Wimberley, but tighter overall. It test your ability to throw hyzer, anhyzers, while putting the premium on accuracy. The course is clean for being open 2 days, and you ladies will be glad you are here instead of Rivery. Par is about 62 as there are some par 4's and a par 5. I will be there at 5:30 today if anyone wants to play

You have to pay to play with fewer amenities. I'm surprised Austin didn't think of that first.

I believe they definately do not want people out there playing at the current time!!
The real question is "why"? I can understand they "aren't ready" but put the baskets in for the TWC.....which doesn't really answer the question of what else there is they want to accomplish before making it open all the time.
Wonder if the baskets are gonna be pulled occationally because of other events at the park....like soccer tournaments, or whatever else it is that goes on there.....and if so how often can we expect that to happen.
Regardless....this is a NICE course and whatever the reasons, we should play by their rules and if they aren't ready, they aren't ready........V can you shed some more light on this? Thanks

ok got an update. course is still under development and is not open for play. The city says they have a few more things to iron out in court and than around 3 weeks of work left than the course will be officially opened for play. So I would say by 6/18 this should be a full time course. They also said these last few days of rain have delayed progress. as for now I believe they are pulling the baskets as # 1 and # 18 are not in. so either go play lago, rivery , cat hollow, round rock or san gabriel plenty of courses to choose from.
Thanks Dub...
As tempting as it is to play anyway, we dont want to risk losing this course before we even officially have it!

I just got back from there. No baskets are in. Sleeves have nothing covering them, so that will pose a problem on a few of them(rock & debris in sleeves). They have done work on the rock borders of the path thru-out the course. They look nice, but not a very good reason from keeping us off the course. The tee-boxes are all marked with surveyor flags, but some of them need a little bit of clearing. We did the work day a long time ago- if more work needs to be done, they should invlove those that will be utilizing the premises, so it can actually get done!!

They have put a lot of work into the rock-lined mulch paths that direct you to the next hole. I can see how you could get confused in a couple of places if you didnt look at the map first, but overall I think it flows well.
The one thing I dont like is only one trash can on the whole course, and it is on the first hole. Who brings trash to the first hole? They need more trash cans, but I dont think they have any intention of putting them out there.

Jim the main guy will be out of town this weekend so probably won't happen this weekend but she will call me. also the scorecards do not have # 6 on them it has #8 for # 6 and 2 # 18's the first # 18 is # 8 and the second # 18 is # 18.

this is a great course, gotta like a course that you have two perfect 300 ft throws and you are still no where near the basket #10 (not that i had two perfect throws). I would suggest some rocks be moved for seating or maybe benches for slow play.

wilco is a BEAST, it spanked me like a red headed step child.
There is a bee hive on 18 at WILCO. From the tee box go 200 ft. straight at the basket to the big tree in the middle of the fairway. Look up at about 8 ft. off the ground where they cut off a big limb and left a hole in the tree. Then you'll notice about a thousand bees around the hole looking at you! So when you hear someone yelling chances are it will not be an ace!

also what kinda of CRAP is it where 2 of the 3 cards play shorter tee boxes on hole # 6 while 1 card tees from the original location!!!! sounds like BS to me. might have had a 3 way tie for second if someone would leave the tees alone until all cards have played them
vinnie
Jul 24 2006, 09:25 AM
original location is the shorter spot! by all of 12'
Who ever moved it back opened up a shot to the right making the hole easier and the county is NOT going to be happy about people altering the tee boxes. But if you would like to join me at 6:00pm, I'll give you a shot a #1

#6 and #11 can be confussing, But when they get the tee signs up it will be much easier.

#7 is a little right but to call it a dog leg...I guess you could call it a straightin out dog leg cause you can see the basket from the tee box

Jul 24 2006, 10:12 AM
# 7 is not visible from the tee., you have to walk out to the left to actual see the basket.

We were just trying to get them to their intended locations per the course designer. 6 was supposed to be about 12' back, and 17 is supposed to be a bit to the left to stop thumber tee shots. Know that it is not vandals adjusting the tees. I will see you out there at 6 Vinnie, get James to go.
james_mccaine
Jul 24 2006, 11:51 AM
What do y'all do out there at six. Is it a mini, or simply a chance to whip some Turbo/Miller butt? ;)
vinnie
Jul 24 2006, 12:39 PM
If you move #6 back it opens open a shot down fairway12....unless you make the tree a mandotory.
And mandotory is for poorly designed holes
no mini....just the best practice for Worlds IMO. But James you go play Bart's 6 holes and be suprised of the courses in Georgia. I will bring along a shopping cart and place it in one of the worlds fairways to make you feel more at home.
Join us James!
james_mccaine

seewhere
Jul 24 2006, 01:22 PM
you can still throw down hole #12's fairway where you moved it too.. so it sounds like a poor design than  if the city really wants to keep this course nice they need concrete pads so the course does not end up with a bunch of wore out holes by each intended tee box. and anyone that moves tee boxes to remove a shot they cant throw is not a real course designer in the first place., you dont design a course to suit your game.

Jul 24 2006, 02:21 PM

james_mccaine
Jul 24 2006, 03:16 PM
Not so fast, Grasshopper. Chris ain't right about this one. What is wrong with Houck designing a course to eliminate thumbers? God knows we have enough of them around town already.
Anyways, it was Olse moving the box, correct? I heard he has a pretty good overhead shot. :D

Jul 24 2006, 03:26 PM
Hey, so if I go up Parmer to 1431, which direction do I turn on 1431, and how far is that from the road to the park?
If you head north on Parmer, hang a right on 1431, and then hang a left at the first light. If is FM17? (4 or 5) to the left, and Sam Bass to the right of 1431 at that intersection.

[/QUOTE]
Those are where the tee boxes are suppose to be based on the original design. Now, I don't know if they'll ever allow for #4 to be moved back to the original position due to the fact they jumped the gun and put in that walking path before the holes were tweaked. As discussed originally, #6 should have a mando sign on the tree. If that box is moved up too far it messes with the angle of the lines. #9 is not suppose to allow a thumber due to someone getting clobbered by a disc walking from #13 to #14. I saw Terry saturday morning and none of this matters anyway because before there is cement put in the ground there will be a final agreement with the county as to exactly where the tee boxes will be set in so far as a few feet this way or that.
Have fun, enjoy the course.
Ware, learn how to throw a forehand or practice throwing left-handed hyzers. That's the beauty of disc golf ya know................  :D

Jul 24 2006, 05:54 PM

I actually agree that the bees should stay - they haven't bothered me - the hole could be known as the bee hive hole. Those in the know will be sure not to hit that tree - treat it like a hazard.
My bet, however, is that city will take them out because (bee-cause?) of liability concerns.
Paul Taylor
Aug 02 2006, 09:21 PM
To get rid of bees all you need is baby powder. Bees will suficate because of it. Just sprinkle the powder on the bees and because the bees body is so wet, the powder will stick to the body and kill it.
Now experts will tell you that this does not work, but I got rid of a hive near my home with a bottle from the store, it worked.
Cornmeal works on getting rid of those pesky little sugar ants also.

Friday night MINI: Edman will run a mini this friday night teeing off at 5:30
need to check these to ensure they are right:
Directions from Wilco to kat Hollow:
<table border="1"><tr><td> Maneuvers Distance Maps
</td></tr><tr><td> 1: Start out going SOUTHEAST on SAM BASS RD / CR-175 toward CR-179. Continue to follow SAM BASS RD. 3.8 miles Map
</td></tr><tr><td>
</td></tr><tr><td> 2: Turn RIGHT onto GREAT OAKS DR. 0.6 miles Map
</td></tr><tr><td>
</td></tr><tr><td> 3: Turn RIGHT onto OAK MEADOW DR. 0.1 miles Map
</td></tr><tr><td>
</td></tr><tr><td> 4: Turn LEFT onto PIN OAK LN. 0.1 miles Map
</td></tr><tr><td>
</td></tr><tr><td> 5: Turn LEFT onto OAK RIDGE DR. <0.1 miles Map
</td></tr><tr><td>
</td></tr><tr><td> 6: Turn RIGHT onto GREAT OAKS DR. 0.2 miles Map
</td></tr><tr><td>
</td></tr><tr><td> 7: Turn LEFT onto BRIGHTWATER BLVD. 0.8 miles Map

</td></tr><tr><td> 8: Turn RIGHT onto WYOMING SPRINGS DR. 0.2 miles Map
</td></tr><tr><td>
</td></tr><tr><td> 9: Turn LEFT onto FALCON DR. 0.3 miles Map
</td></tr><tr><td></tr></td></table>
I'll need to check but I think Great Oaks goes straight through to 620. If that is the case then once on Great Oaks turn left on Oconnor then left on Liberty Walk and hole 1 is on right.
lilbigarm
Aug 04 2006, 08:25 AM
hey larry
i saw your pardner dale at wilco and he said they had stung him good and he knows of two other people that had been hit. to sprinkle powder on these things you better be encased in glass. they were so stired up the other day it looked like heat vapors comming off that tree
After checking again you do have to temporarily get off Great oaks and then back on. Follow the written directions but stay on Great Oaks to O'connor then Liberty Walk and you are there.

Is there a schedule in place to install concrete boxes at Wilco. The course has been open maybe six weeks and already the tee boxes are turning to s%$t. The rapid degradation of the boxes means lots of people have been playing so the county should be pleasantly surprised with the money already generated. Is there someone with the county I can call or email, or a workday I could help with to get real tee boxes installed in ONE course around Austin other than Zilker. It still blows my mind that everywhere I travel too concrete boxes are pretty standard, but in Austin the tee box remains the worst place to throw from on each and every hole.
