You still have to agree that when a tourney starts to fill so early there should be division limits for early signups, and then the limits lifted about three days before signups close so that more AMS can enter if the pros don't sign up early right? BTW that was a major run-on. :D

Feb 12 2006, 09:21 PM
The early bird get the worm! :D
Don't pro players put on their pants the same way as we do? :o
Since this isn't a major event where holding slots has more merit, I don't see where pro protection is deserved here. My thoughts, plan ahead guys, plain and simple.
That is the case for TSDGC, so any am players better sign up asap, you don't have a unlimited number of spots available to you. (in case anyone is interested)
the_kid
Feb 12 2006, 09:27 PM
Well I think that you should fill from the top down and you have to remember that not everyone has access to this board. I think a limit of 60 AMs and 45 pros is fair and if the Pro pool isn't full by the week of the event then the remaining spots are opened up for anyone. You must remember that anyone can play pro but not everyone can play AM. So it is more of AM protection by not limiting the field then assigning pools would be for the pros. :o
Pizza God
Feb 12 2006, 10:11 PM
There is no reason for anyone to NOT have access to this web site. If you don't have a computer, I can get you one for $100 and there are even still free internet access numbers.
Shoot even my parents have dial up because there is nothing else available in there area (other than Dish access which is real expensive and not all that great)
As far as holding spots.
the first 105 players that signed up had a spot reserved for them.
At that point I would have considered 2 flights. A pro/Advance flight and a Am/Rec/Women flight.
The Pro/Adv tee off ASAP and then the B-flight tees off as soon as the last card comes in. This is the way tournaments use to be run back in the day. Most of the time, you didn't even know there were going to be two flights until the morning meeting.

No I don't have to agree. Pro players are notoriously known for signing up late. Looks like for the VO, they got bitten by their own laziness. Everyone of the players on the players' list was able to sign up early somehow...why didn't these other Pros follow suit? Maybe the Pros need a better grapevine to communicate?

BTW that was a major run-on.
That is why I teach HS Geometry and not English. IF you were talking to me, which in that case I don't mind, since I never really could write very well anyways, even with a spell and grammar check. :D If you are talking about yourself let me know who your english teacher is and I will email your last post to her.
By the way, I don't agree. For a major, yes. For a tournament who has been supported over the years by mainly the AMS, in which most tournaments are, no. I do not know of very many players who do not have access to this board and this DISCussion.

Why does it matter if it is a major or not? If an event is likely to fill give the higher divisions a better chance to get in and maybe it will cause some other people to move up a division and test the waters. Effrain's idea isn't that bad either as many event are already getting rid of MA3.

Buckhorn Open, Charlotte Open, and The Sneeky Pete. Pretty much all NC events don't offer MA3 and they have a really good dg scene. I though TSDGC was thinking about not offering a MA3 division this year.

Feb 12 2006, 10:48 PM
Oh, you're talking about an area that hasn't traditionally offered MA3, not an area that did and now isn't. While you're at it, you could throw Outlaws onto that list.
Again, what is so difficult about signing up early that cause Pros to have trouble? I bet I know more Ams than Pros who had no idea when the VO is, let alone it was filling fast.

Wow, time for you to step down off your soapbox, boy. And it's a long ways back down to earth. You Matt, are the exception to the rule, not all of us were blessed with the gifts you must have gotten from your mother, LOL! No, to say that you need to elimiate Rec? Next you'll be suggesting that we cut out the girls, cause they are taking up pro slots, :) Just makes me laugh. Remember, it's the ams who help to make the whole experience possible. Are you supposed to punish or exclude those who are just entering the competitive scene? Ams foster the pros of tomorrow.
When you start making comments like this, it just illustrates that no matter what skills you command on a golf course, in the real world, you are infinitely deficient.

Feb 12 2006, 10:57 PM
Maybe instead of filling tournaments from the "Top Down" (do you have any idea how condescending that sounds?), TDs should fill touraments from the "top down", but rather than use divisions as the criteria, we use age. So the older you are, the higher priority you have in holding a tournament spot. The day before a tournament, if there are any spots left, the 18 and under kids can sign up too.
Sounds like a stupid idea, doesn't it? Well, that's because it is.
*** *** ***
The Problem with your plan, Matt (other than its false sense of superiority and self-importance), is that most of us lowly AMs have a life.
And as such, we need more than three days in advance notice in order to play an out of town tournament. So, if a tourney hits their "AM pre-reserved" number of spots, and you want to play, you'd have to wait until just three days before the tournament to play. Likely I wouldn't be inclined to play if I didn't know for sure if I'd be able to play only three days in advance.
Additionally, what happens when the Pros don't show up (which they commonly don't in large numbers)? And then the TD isn't able to fill his tournament with AMs in the course of only three days, because they already made other plans not knowing for sure if they'd have a spot?
Now, the TD suffers too --- he could have filled his tournament a week in advance with eager players, but since the Pros didn't fill their "reserved" spots, and there wasn't enough time to fill with Ams, the entire tournament suffers.
The real issue here is the sense of superiority and importance that Pro players think they hold above their amateur counterparts. Let me set you straight on that --- no pro is more important or better than any single am. player. Sure, you might be a better golfer on most days, but so what? If you believe that it's better for a tournament to cater to pros at the expense of ams, than you really don't understand what tournaments are about and why most of us enjoy them so much (in case you don't know, Matt, the key word in that last sentence was "enjoy").
So, you Pros with this illogical sense of entitlement need to let it go. I think it makes you sound like an #$*&$! to suggest that you are more important or better for a tournament than anybody else.
Very bottom line, if you want to play, sign up early just like all the other equally-entitled golfers (regardless of division).
the_kid
Feb 12 2006, 11:12 PM
To tell you the truth I agree that the "Pro guys" just need to sign up early and please not that I did. I know that there are a lot of events that offer Flights with limits 90pros/90ams or 45/45 and usually the pro fields don't come close to being filled so there are still a lot of spots offered. I would like to see a bigger pro filed but the fact is that if they don't sign up early they don't get in. Maybe next year there can be two weekends Pro/ADV and then INT and below. Even though I doubt there will be due to the effort involed in running an event I feel this will creat an even better tournament with a HUGE tournout.
I just was pretty excited two weeks ago when I heard numerous amounts of guys saying that they were planning on making the trip and I expected about 20-30 MPOs and 15 MPMs and then come to find out there is only around 20 all together. Sorry ladies I didn't tally your #'s.:D
Sorry to offend (if I did) but that wasn't my intent. I just have my own opinion on this subject and I have since I was still playing Jrs and I guess not many people agree with me.

I vote for field limits. A bunch of local recs are bad for the growth of the sport. Bare with me. No way no how should a group of guys or gals that play the same park day in and day out shooting low scores should come out and play rec. in a tournament. The fellas that introduced me to the game less than two years ago are starting to compete in rec. I say that is BS they are ready to compete and should play INT. Guys I met shortly there after have no business playing INT after 5 or more years. At least look in yourself and look at the definitions of the divisions. There are obviously exceptions to this. A player who is highly skilled should step up. Some folks just won't ever be good enough to do so. I'll be lucky to make advanced since I started so late..

Oh yeah Rooster, Pros also have jobs and most cannot commit to an event two weeks ahead of time which is why there should be limits to certain divisions. This will let all players know what field size to expect before they go to a tournament.

And we know you have the ability to......... ok nevermind I am still a nice guy.
Matt, see there, you showed refrain and maturity in that post, and nobody ever said you weren't a nice guy. We all know you are a nice guy that is very outspoken with his opinions.
It would sure be boring if we all thought alike.

I do agree about those course regulars who are not "rated" playing down to "cash in" on the local angle. Doesn't a TD have the ability to determine where an unrated local should be playing? If the TD is local, he is usually aware of the skill set of regulars at his course, and could eliminate this from happening. If you know someone isn't a real beginner, they should have to play am even if they don't have a "rating"
But who ever said that life was fair.

I'll be back on this subject soon as I get done playing the "Victoria Open"..... Start a new thread on PRO BS!!!!!! :DThe Vic. Open has been going on for a long time. It has had differant names, but always has been a good time. That is why there is a good turnout. We all have jobs and personal details, but if you make plans, go through with them. I have often wondered why Pro players don't seem to be able to sign up early for tournaments. I think all three of Maces sanctioned events this year filled. Players need to get it together and register early if they want to attend. Both Pro and Am players have jobs and must make arrangements. Everyone should have seen this event filling from a long way away.
Everyone complained that there were too many events every weekend last year. I worked hard at removing doubled up weekends this year, and now people are complaining that events are filling early and they can't get in. Looks like all of the events in Texas need to be scheduled on 2 courses from now on.

Happy Birthday Matt!
Last year this event competited with Pro weekend of Z-Boaz, and that might have had an impact on the numbers. But the rationale that "pro's have jobs too" WOW, ARE THE PROS JOBS SOMEHOW DIFFERENT THAN THE REST OF THE DISC GOLF WORLD?
We didn't have any pro ladies last year, so it's good to see you gals coming for a great weekend of golf!
The need for preplanning just becomes more apparent each year. I know I've paid for numerous tournaments in advance this year. Early entry fees help your TD's too. If you have the passion to play you find a way.
I'm ready for the Kolache stop in Hillje, so tell us more about the band for Saturday night.

Good job on filling the event early. I love it when everyone signs up early. To those cry babies that missed out, how many times do you have to be told. Tough luck. Somehow around 105 people managed to do the right thing by the TD and actually signed up early.
The TD's job is to ensure those 105 people are taken care of at the event, have fun and enjoy the weekend they entered ontime, and not take cry baby phone calls from lazy Pro's that expect to be let in late.
See you all in Victoria.
By the way Matt you missed a fun day at Shawshank yesterday. I know you didn't show because you didn't think any Pro's would be there but in fact we had 9 Pro's in perfect weather.

It takes longer to play extra holes than well spaced out ghost cards. I personally think ghost cards should not even be allowed in sanctioned play.
The skill in spacing the ghost cards and the locations of the different divisions on the course will also make a huge difference.

I have to agree with you, Chris, about ghost cards. Tournaments, sanctioned or not, should be allowed max 5 players per hole and that's that. 5 bogs things down enough. It's just takes away from the fun for me when you have to sit on the tee box and wait for the group ahead of you to finish on 1/2 the holes and it's harder to get in a rhythm. Ya gotta know that players who are in contention for cash really hate it.

Feb 14 2006, 03:27 PM
I agree too.
The only ones who benefit from ghost cards are the players who got to squeeze in despite signing up after the event filled and the TD (but only minimally). Oh, and I guess the PDGA benefits too from a few more PDGA fees.
I'd rather see TDs just take a stand and say, "Sorry, but we're full." Even if you have a post-marked entry. You'll just have to accept the refund and try to sign up earlier next time. By continually allowing more players 5/hole Max., the late-signers never really learn their lesson.

Quick glance through the updated players rating --- anybody going to be forced to move up a division from where they signed up?
I see at least one: Trey Clarkson, signed up in MA2 --- new rating 927.
Trey, get Toby to play up in MA1 with you.

Just my impression of things that make full courses run smoother. Chris is an expert, let's see if he agrees.
4 man cards in slower divisions, even if it means ghost cards in quicker divisions.
Short tees on the longest holes.
Spotters on all bottle neck holes par 4/5 holes to start the next card when the first card is out of reach.
Ghost cards on short/quick holes that are after long/slow holes.
Pro and Advanced players should be able to handle ghost cards better than other divisions.
No more than 3-4 ghost cards on the course.

Most of the advanced masters play pretty fast. We don't waste a lot of time making up our minds what shot we want to throw. If we wait too long to throw, we'll forget why we got up.

Gary, since spotters can be hard to come by, can the TD make a rule that on certain pre-defined holes where you know there are problems with schule, blind alleys, etc. that BOB has to spot, or it can be a courtesy violation?

That is basically it Gary. However it is never easy getting spotters. Somehow people never seem to send Bob out to spot either which doesn't help. Everybody always seems to think they won't throw off the fairway.
When a tournament fills it is full, and that should be it. After this I think I will petition the PDGA to not allow ghost cards at PDGA events. Someone earlier said it perfectly. Take care of the people that did the right thing and entered early, don't reward those that make life tough for a TD.
I am looking forward to playing this weekend. I think I will break out my "I am NOT the TD...ask someone else" t-shirt. :D

You did mean shorter tees for just some groups right Gary? Yikes, the last thing I would like to see is a compromised championship style course. I have been waiting to play a tournament in Victoria for some time now. In fact I sent my entry in early because I heard Victoria had a great tournament layout. I stick by the add more holes if you can, even if they are shorter style fill in the gaps type of thing.
This may be somewhere on here, but what is the format for the weekend? different pins, etc?

When we started planning 06 VO, we never imagined that so many discgolfers would want to play in our little 'ol tourney. :cool:A HUGE THANK YOU to all for your support. :DYOU are the reason RSDG decided last year to run the VO ourselves and try to make it into one of the premier events in Texas.
Since last Saturday when I announced we were full, I have received so many phone calls, e-mails and PMs from folks trying to get in, that we could have easily filled two courses. Unfortunatly, we can only accept a limited number of entries on our only course.

You did mean shorter tees for just some groups right Gary?
Yes, I rewrote that a few times and I guess it got left off on one of them.
Short tees when a hole is too long for a division to play it at par. I'd say that all Pro and Adv divisions can play that course without any changes without delay. Probably the Int men as well. It's all about drive distance. All divisions should be playing their upshots from about the same place.

I'm with ya, brother Chris. If can help to back you up on this, let me know. I feel that if you pay $63 for an entry fee and well in advance of the tournament, you shouldn't be penalized with an overcrowded course.
My peace being said, I am happy to get to play this tournament after missing the past two years. I love this course. It's one of my favorites of all time and I do appreciate the Riverside Disc Golf Club for hosting it.

In case I dont tell you this weekend Tommy, Thanks for all you have done and hang in there. Lots of good suggestions for adding ghost cards, making shorter tees and adding more holes, all great ideas to keep in mind for next year!!!

Everyone needs to stop their whining!!!
Everyone finally got a final players list and as usual a lot of you have a need to start finding things to whine about. Consider yourselves lucky to get in and enjoy a good weekend of golf. So what if we are going to have to wait at a couple of holes, bring a chair. The park is spread out very well with lots of shade............I know five guys here in CC that would love to be in the tournament, so we should all count our blessings instead of trying to give Tommy an ulcer!!!

Yikes....4 ghost cards on a 21 hole course. Luckily, it's a well groomed park, and there shouldn't be much time spent looking for "lost" discs.
With that said, I hope the players meeting is very, very, very brief. Something along the lines of:
________________________________________
"Thanks everybody for coming out and to most of you for signing up early. The 2 meter rule is/is not in effect. Remember that the new lost disc rule is also in effect for 2006: If you lose a disc, the penalty is stroke + distance, and you must re-throw from your previous lie. All concrete and beyond is OB, there are drop zones (list any) or mandos (list here) (if applicable). Here are the tees to be played by each division: (if they are different say it here).
I'd like to thank all the sponsors (read list very quickly).
Please be aware that the course is over-full and we're not in Day Light Savings Time yet...so keep that in mind and let's all try to be finished before nightfall.
Since the tourney filled well in advance, your hole assignments and cards were made yesterday. Pick them up (tell where), and I'll call two minutes in 10 minutes from right now. Good luck everybody and have fun."

The entire players meeting could be done in <5 minutes. Feel free to copy and read this speech in it's entirety, Tommy.
