If Wisecup's 57 holds up, it could be a course record by the oldest player at age 50.

Isn't Rick Rothstein older than 50?

yes but what does that have to do with steve wisecup setting a course record, unless your talking about the course record for a person over 50 having a bad hair day :o:D

Alas! After shooting a 67 in Monday qualifying, advancing in the unprecedented Tuesday playoff for the last 2 spots, and firing a sweet round of 67 in the first round yesterday, Kim Scott-Wood's luck has seemed to run out on him today. As were many others, he was done in by the 888-foot par 5 thirteenth hole, as well as the seventeenth and eighteenth holes.

Keep your head up high, Kimmy! Lotsa golf left!

Chuck,

What do you mean by "Course record"? Do you mean the highest rated round?

As far as lowest score the record is 56:
--2002, 4th round, Brad Hammock, new record of 56 (-12). [He birdied holes 1-9, 12, 15-18, and he bogied 11 & 14.]
--2004, 1st round, Ken Climo, ties record of 56 (-12) [He birdied holes 1, 3, 4, 6, 8-11, 13, 16-18]

Of course, those were different course layouts so maybe you can't just use score, but it is one way to determine the record.

From my archives--

Highest rated rounds:
o 2004 Ken Climo, 56 in Round 1, rated 1079
o 2003 Barry Schultz, 58 in windy Round 3, rated 1071, with course SSA 71.6

Shouldnt aces be counted seperately from eagles? I mean they are ACES, not a 3 on a par 5 hole. Both are great accomplishments, but I think the aces are more important to recognize, seperately.

I just spoke with distance qualifier Charlie Beal when he was turning in his scorecard. Charlie said that he brought 2 TeeBirds and 2 Starfires with him to the distance qualifier and after he threw them, someone gave him a Wraith to throw. The Wraith was the disc that he qualified with at 199 yards. Needless to say, Charlie is now a huge Wraith fan.

No, you are not the only one. That is a poor design choice.

It's not that bad ... plus there are two things you can do to make it easier:
(1) Scroll using your middle-mouse-scroll-button (if you have one) instead of dragging the bar up & down.
(2) Open the scores for the round you are looking at in a new window. The surrounding environment is gone and all you will see is just the scores, making it easier to scroll. Click here to see: http://www.discgolfunited.com/index.cfm?DGUaction=Leaderboard.Round&thisLayout=YES&round=3

Hope that helps some.

There appears to be a discrepancy. On the homepage which shows the top two cards, it shows a 2 scored on hole 2, but if you click on Sprague's name on the leader board it shows a 3 scored on hole 2.

I guess will find out later if it was a good hole or an amazing, legendary hole for him.

If my calc's are correct, here is where the top 2 cards stand after 10.

-21...Martin
-19...Lundmark
-19...Sprague
-17...McCoy
-16...Doss
-16...Schultz
-15...Brinster
-13...Light

Oct 14 2005, 06:33 PM
I think Sprague is actually at -18 but the rest are correct they have on his name link hole 2 being a 3.

Oct 14 2005, 06:35 PM
I used the 3 for his total. He is even par for the day and started at -19.

just looking at prior years winning scores, looks like last year was by far the most difficult layout at USDGC
2001 -27 last cash +10
2002 -35 last cash +3
2003 -29 last cash +5
2004 -17 last cash +20
2005 (-23 and counting) last cash?

gnduke

Dave Feldberg with a -10 to jump into 2nd.
Barry Schultz birdies the last 5 holes.

Lead card at -20,-21,-22,-23.
Can't ask for much better than that.

ck34
Oct 14 2005, 08:24 PM
Using those stats can be misleading. Field sizes have gotten bigger so more players have cashed. I would use the average round rating required to cash and the average course SSA (which you can look up) as better stats for comparison. I would agree that last year may have been the toughest, especially because the wind was really rough the one day.

RobBull

It looks like Dave Feldberg only has two bogey's and one double for the tournament. He looks to have a good shot at the ring.

Apples and oranges. Each 56 is a record in its own right since the layouts were different.

True; however, for record-keeping purposes, the tournament record is based on the score for one complete tournament round, regardless of changes to the layout.

It should also be noted that, strictly speaking, the course record belongs by Brad Hammock, who recorded a 56 in 2002. Although Climo and, now, Kallstrom have subsequently tied the record, Hammock is, properly speaking, the record holder by virtue of establishing it.

ck34
Oct 15 2005, 09:29 PM
If that thought process were true, then the course record is the 49 thrown by Climo in the 1999 USDGC. I think most would consider significant course changes as requiring separate records.

Wish I saw Markus' round, nice shooting!

Wow, I took over 10000 pictures this week. Hopefully 3-6% of them turned out good! Gotta love digital!

Got to see some great shots this week. Scott Martin canned 2 60 foot putts on hole 13 in two consecutive rounds... from almost the exact same spot! The second round he was trying to get to the green and hit a tree, landing the disc in the same spot he hit the previous round. I was next to Barry, who said, after he made the putt, something to the effect of "That was a nice lay-up. I'm sure he planned that."

Missed shooting an ace on hole 3 by about 15 seconds. Got to shoot the reaction though. That ace was worth 1/2 the ace pool on Thursday, plus a $100 bounty courtesy of Dragan Field, PLUS a TREK Mountain Bike! Glad I was at least in the right vicinity.

Distance finals were a lot of fun, new setup this year. Get it just across for 1 point, then a line about 25 feet across will get you 2 points, another 25 feet will get you 3, and if you can crush one that hits the road or beyond, it's worth 5! All competitors were throwing Pro Wraiths, BUT, if you wanted to go for double points you could try to throw a ROC across.
Daniel Sandstrom was taken out by Avery in the tie breaker. Then Charlie Beal and Justin Bunnell were edged out in the Semis by some phenomenal shots from Avery and Markus Kallstrom. Avery shot 25 points for 10 shots, and Markus shot a 28, including a Roc that didn't make it across, and 2 shots in the road. SICK!!!!
In the Finals, Avery consistently hit 2 and 3 pointers, while Markus was going for the road, but ended up mostly with 2 pointers... Avery successfully defended his distance title!

Big turnouts this year for the finals. Crowds just kept building throughout the day. Not sure how many we finally had following the lead cards, but it was hard keeping them back from the ropes. Not a bad thing to have to deal with!

The web team has done a phenomenal job with scores, updates, audio, storyboards, and gallery shots. Big shout outs to our scoring team, (and don't kill me if I forget someone) Steve Hackenberg *super IT GURU*, Leila (hole 4 tent), Justin (hole 9 tent), Trey (hole 15 tent), Rob Kelly, Neal Lanier, "Boomer" Shope, Linda Lee, and, oh yeah, Brian Graham *master scorecard checker*
Also, a big thanks to the Web team, Kevin Smith, Stick, and Mike Norris. These guys were up early and late, uploading pics, searching therough umpteen thousand of my photos for the good ones, getting stories, and doing all sorts of odd jobs to keep the web visitors informed. Tough job keeping up with teh action, but both teams did a phenomenal job.

I also would like to thank my fellow photographers, Adrian (Player Meeting), Ryan Bumgarner, Tim Day, and Stick, Norris and Kevin. These guys got the shots I wasn't around for.

Have fun tomorrow everyone. I'm taking the day off.

Oh yeah, Congrats to Feldberg for an awesome finish!

And a big congrats to Frizzak Bard Soleng for cracking the top 20! If there were a rookie trophy for this tournament, he'd get for Sjur!

If that thought process were true, then the course record is the 49 thrown by Climo in the 1999 USDGC. I think most would consider significant course changes as requiring separate records.

The question is, what constitutes "significant change"?

It is rarely the case in sports that changes to the venue or the attendant circumstances are acknowledged in the keeping of recordsthe glaring exception being the asterisk appended, albeit briefly, to Roger Maris' 61. To cite but two examples from our so-called "sister sport"and recognizing that disc golf is not ball golfAugusta National still lists Nick Price's 63 in 1986 as the Masters record (tied by Norman in '96), despite the radical redesign ("Tiger-proofing") following the 1997 Masters; and, the 63 Thomas Bjorn shot at Baltusrol during this year's PGA Championship is considered merely to have tied the course record (http://www.pga.com/pgachampionship/2005/video/000402.html) set by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf on the opening day of the 1980 US Open (though Weiskopf started later in the day, he and Nicklaus are considered to hold the record jointly), despite the course having been lengthend by nearly 600 yards in the interim.

If memory serves, in 1999, par was listed as 64, as opposed a par of 68 in 2002, 2004, and this year. If that is the case, then to compare 1999 scores to scores from 2002, 2004, and 2005 would indeed be akin comparing apples to oranges, while comparing 2002, 2004, and 2005 scores would be more akin to comparing Red Delicious, McIntosh, and Rome apples. So while Brad, Ken, and Markus may be justifiably proud of their accomplishment, and each may lay claim to the record for the low round at that year's Championship, it remains the case that the Gold Course record in the par 68 layout is [i]held[/b] by Brad, and shared by Ken and Markus.

Greatest image and memory from all weekend. Friday night at the players party sitting at the table together. 3 from Norway, 4 from Japan, 1 from England and 2 from the US with a case of Budwiser laughing thier butts off while they try communicating with each other.

I'm sure that someone posted this.....

Memories of the worst shots / bad luck

Bard Soleng threw in the water on hole 1 - probably the worst tournament roll I've ever seen - hits the first tree and rolls all the way to the water...

Barry missed a putt about the distance from my face to the computer screen in front of me...

Best Shots....

Feldberg after pitching through the clowns mouth pins it from about 400 out - Barry 4 putted - huge 5 stroke swing on that hole starting with Dave's amazing shot

Barry nailed a 45 foot jump putt with a fall off to OB for an eagle three on hole 12.

Random Thoughts....

John Houck looks shorter in person than I thought.

I would say a hole where a group got three 3's and a circle 4 is not a par 5

Rhett needs to learn how to hit gaps - welcome to the Carolinas!

Fireworks are loud. Unmiked competitors are not.

According to the scoring statistics posted on the USDGC website, hole 12 had a SSA of 4.78, 4.64, 4.59, and 4.42 for rounds 1-4 respectively. By way of contrast, hole 11 (par 4) had SSAs of 4.82, 4.67. 4.65, and 4.49 for rounds 1-4, respectively, and hole 13 had SSAs of 5.89, 5.90, 5.86, and 5.80. The difficulty ranking for hole 12 was 4 for rnds 1-2 and 5 for rnds 3-4; for hole 11 it was 3 for rnds 1-2 and 4 for rnds 3-4; for hole 13, it was 1 for all four rounds.

These statistics seem to suggest that hole 12 was a relatively easy par 5 sandwiched between a difficult par 4 and a difficult par 5. While it could be argued that hole 12 should have been a par 4, I'm not sure that the numbers are so seriously out of line as to make calling it a par 5 unreasonable.

I missed one of these in team match play yesterday. As I went to drop it in the lip of the disc caught the basket nubs and it was pulled from my hand.

In my defense, there was a pretty strong head wind. :o

USDGC is where it is at. We enjoyed a great day yesterday watching staff, recreationals and spectators enjoy Winthrop Gold. We heard several comments of respect and how we all make playing this course look rather simple ;)
Des took down lots of the boys this year and got to play with folks from six different countries and Kansas.
Her last three rounds were 69,70,70. We think she would have cashed if she didn't get hit square in the face with a disc in the pratcice area just minutes before her first tee. She choose to ice her cheekbone verses pratice putting which she said caused her many strokes in her opening round 75.
Yeti wins the Putting Championship and no I'm not mean, but I will eat you :p

I had a great time out there last week. That is one great course for playing golf. A couple of par-5s that were really hard to get a five on, and a par-5 and a few par-4s that were easily birdie-able with smart and well-executed play.

Thanks for all the tips on 888. I managed to play it 6-5-6p, and that 5 felt like a birdie. Getting a 6 after going OB off the tee left (hit the grass too soon and skipped over the disc-catching mini-valley) felt purty good too. :)

I couldn't believe I ended up with a 79 on that last round after having two double-p snowmen in that round, because it felt like an 85 at the least. I guess all that talking to myself to not just give in was worth it. :)

I did go for the clown's mouth that last round after laying up the first two times. It took me three shots to get through without ever missing the mandy! I whacked the left side tree trying to throw a low skipper through the gap, and it kicked about 50 feet down the line to the left and came to rest an inch from the missed-mandy line. Crap! I tried a two-finger blade to the non-existant gap from that angle, hoping to get through and roll out into the open, only to get more bark and bounce back about five feet left of the hole. Terrible angle still. I skipped the CFR Viper through the hole and then pumped a huge 162g Sidewinder Annie to the pin, and actually made a decent length putt for 5.

I guess that last hole summed up my play for the week. A few really good shots mixed in with a whole lotta trouble. :D

Or maybe even Baby-Schweb! :D

Don't wait too long...you don't want to be 40 chasing around a 5 year old!

One aspect of the Championship continues: The on-line version of the 2005 USDGC Triva contest http://www.usdgc.com/2005USDGCTrivia.pdf .

Thanks to the support of the DGA, the winner will receive a very nice Hammertone portable target.

Take care,
Harold

Does anyone know the website of the two ladies who were taking pictures during the Championship? They had the booth set up kinda near the tee of 3. Thanks and that was such a fun time. Way to bring it home DAVE!!!

Anyone know where to find links to all the photographers? Someone got a shot on hole 5 saturday (morning) that i would love to see, some kid from arkansas knockin' down a hundred foot par save!

I'd like to thank Jonathan Poole and his hundreds-strong staff for another excellent USDGC. Truly the pinnacle of our sport. I will proudly tell my grandkids about my two trips to Rock Hill when they ask me about what disc golf was like in the old days.
