Due to the expanded field (190 players) and limited daylight, tee times for day one are tentatively being planned for 9-minute intervals beginning at 7:45am, with the last group teeing off at 2:48pm.

Following a long standing USDGC tradition, first round tee times will be announced at the mandatory players meeting on tuesday evening at Winthrop University. Tee times and daily scores will be posted each evening in the tournament clubhouse, at the tournament hotel and also at PDGA.com and USDGC.com.

Monday Qualifying!!

Craig leyva shoots a 63 on his 2nd try to get in.
Ed Williams shoots a 63 on his 2nd try to get in.
Kris Orrick shoots a 64 on his 3rd try to get in.

Kim Scott-Wood shoots a 67 on his 1st try.
Kevin Couch shoots a 67 on his 2nd try.
Sam Nicholson shoots a 67 on his 2nd try.

Unprecedented Tuesday playoff for the last 2 spots. Starting at 11 am. 9 Holes 1-7,17,18. If there is a tie for 2nd after the 9 then sudden death.

31 original qualifiers.
29 gave it a 2nd shot.
7 gave it a 3rd shot.
2 gave it a 4th shot.

Talking to the qualifiers, caddies, friends, spectators and those already qualified there was a common agreement. This was more stressful and drama packed than the actual tournament.
Do I stick with my 68 and think it's good enough??
I'm 2 over after 10, do I quit now to make it back by 4 for the last card cutoff?
These questions and so many more. It was a blast to watch and be apart of it.

So many came close. Tony Wilson (2001 Am World Champ) needed birdie, birdie on 17,18 to tie the 67. Shot bogey, birdie. His drive on 17 barely slid into the water.
Tim Barr (1 of only 19 left that has attended all 6 USDGC's) needed par on 18 to shoot 67. Took a bogey.
Bryan Motley needed par, par on 17,18 for 67. Took bogey, par.
Tom Kim was the bubble with a 68 then Leyva shot his hot 63.

1 flew in from California to try and qualify. Kevein Couch in the Tuesday playoff.
2 flew in from Toronto to try and qualify. Kim Scott-Wood is in the playoff.
1 drove in from Michigan to qualify as did 1 from Florida.
1 drove in from Knoxville, TN to try and qualify not sure of his chances. He shot a 64 and got in. Wasn't counting on it so he had to drive back to Knoxville to get his things and will be back tomorrow.

All this and the tournament starts on Weds. :D

Can't wait til next year.

Also BTW, I aced #6 (S) at the Vet last night. I was passing through as Ken Cantrell and friends were walking right behind me to go play from the dirt pads, and I threw my glow candy Roc and said "Oh, you're on a pretty line. Go sit in that basket!" Then it did. It was quite funny. After it was over I was thinking how mad you'd be as many times as you banged metal on it when the ace pot was so big!

BTW, Mr. JETER you must not have played Winthrop Gold.......you can't ace 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, or 18......and 6 is a super stretch, 7 would be OB if you missed, 13 would be a stretch, 15 would be OB if missed, and 17 would be OB if missed. Hole #1, and #3 are your only real chances to RUN at an ace. It pays to play for the pole at Rock Hill. :)

Are the holes being played in their normal order. I read earlier about a potential change where #5 would become the finishing hole to and eliminating some holes on the back nine. I guess #6 (beach hole) would be #1. Also heard about a large grandstand across the pond.

If you go to the live scoring page and then click on "overall" and then click on a particular player name it will show you a screen of their hole by hole scoring with a break down of how many eagles, birdies, pars, "boogies" and "double boogies" they have had.

It seems to me that having boogies or even double boogies is a private issue that should not be published. Just because someone has a runny nose is not a reason to publicly expose them!

Any Back 9 record would be just for that year since it has changed more than the Front 9 in the past four years. Holes 1-6 & 8 have been pretty stable other than variances in placing the ropes in the same spot each year. Hole 7 barriers have been tweaked a little each year and hole 9 has changed the most.

CAN YOU SAY MCCOY?

11 Birdies - wow, his putter was probably burning his hand! [/quote/] It must have been an Innova puTTer

Justin Bunnell -- the "kid"s got game, Brad Schick doing well also. I predict Blakely & Heeren are going to climb and cash too.

Any body who plays Smart Golf has a good chance of cashing.

Schweb is the man, but Cincinnati's adopted kid (Bunnell) will finish well. As for Blakely, The hotter he plays, the more he talks, the more he talks, the luckier he gets, the luckier he gets, the better he plays. See the cycle?

Nathan Sexton's score was adjusted this morning to reflect his correct score and remove the penalties for turning in an incorrect scorecard. Poor handwriting led us to record a 7 on one hole instead of the 3 that his group verified that he shot. Tee times were not adjusted as they had already been posted.

The scoring link at PDGA.com is now working:

I found out an interesting stat when I broke down par by shot for each hole. Assuming one shot from EVERY hole is a putt, I found the length per hole that is needed for a par (assuming you make the putt; I know, BIG assumption), and the length per hole that is needed for a birdie.

Interesting results...the AVERAGE distance for a par is only 191 feet. The longest shot required (per throw) on a particular hole to make a par is 4 shots of 263 feet on hole 5.

The AVERAGE distance for a birdie is only 312 feet. The longest shot required on a particular hole for a birdie (again, assuming the putt is made) is 463 on hole 14. The next longest to birdie, however, is only 391. Here's a summary:

Length/shot PAR BIRDIE
100-150 4 0
150-200 8 0
200-250 5 3
250-300 1 7
300-350 0 2
350-400 0 5
400-450 0 0
450-500 0 1
18 18

To see the per hole results, just send me a PM. I thought this was interesting though.

In summary, if you can VERY accurately throw up to 300 feet (and hit your putts), you can birdie 10 of the 18 holes, and par all of them. If you can throw up to 400 feet VERY accurately, you can reach every hole but 1. So why aren't more players -10? Oh yeah, the yellow rope. And the whole putting thing.

Thanks Brian.

The USDGC- the only tournament where on any hole a 3 could easily be mistaken as a 7, since both are easily possible on almost any hole.

Hole 14 and a few others have significant elevation changes that need to be taken in consideration. The elevation drop on 14 is at least 25 feet which woiuld result in making that hole effectively 75 feet shorter. Hole 3 is another one with a similar drop. Hole 1 and 7 are maybe 10 feet down and Hole 2 is 12-15 feet up. If hole 12 is where Harold showed me earlier this year, there's elevation drop on it also. Hole 18 goes up at least 10 feet net since it's up then down.

Crap...I knew I forgot another disclaimer.

***Add to post above:

Also, ignoring the factors of elevation. While we're at it, ignoring all factors of foliage whatsoever. And ignoring wind and flying animals.

Okay, more seriously, are there many rollers being thrown out there? I would imagine that since the fairways are somewhat narrow, most players wouldn't want to throw a roller with the possibility of trailing off badly left or right.

Rollers on hole 2, 5, 8, 18 and some risky ones on 14. Holes 9-12 are newer and haven't seen this year's versions but possibly 12.

The first round unofficial SSA is 69.8 with each shot being worth 5.7 rating points. A 52 yesterday, just 16 birds and no 'boogies' (new term introduced on USDGC website [oh, looks like they fixed it :)]), would have yielded the magical rating of 1101.

Guys in my group (in the qualifier) threw rollers for 2nd shot on 11, and tee shot on 12. Oh, and tee shot for 14.

Roller for 2nd on 11 takes a lot of control, but so does any air shot trying to get near the pin.

The rope on 12 is generous by USDGC standards, yet the guy in my group still managed to find it with his roller.

ok, so this is off subject a little, but it is at the USDGC.
Anyone know the brand of Shoes in the Pro Shop there? I remember they start with a "T" but forgot the name. Just curious, was looking at them the other day and it is bugging me and wanted to find out more about them.

ALSO...i htink that Schweberger will be the 3rd. and newest USDGC champ to emerge.....maybe Innova would come out with a signature line..or at least a special puTTer

From a design standpoint, it would appear that hole would not be very good for a Final 9. If you exclude scores from all players below 975 rating you could see if it might still be a good hole for a Gold level course in terms of score spread.

ATTENTION: Someone Playing in the USDGC.

If you see Aleksey Bubis and/or Kelly Ganzel, tell them good luck! And tell them to keep their cool and forget the bad shots. Tell them we're watching them both and cheering them on, as well as the Tulsans.

They are all awesome players, but both can really lose it if they remember their bad shots. Aleksey is one of those guys that can shoot a +5 and come back and shoot a -12. He's that good. He just needs to remember that he's supposed to be having fun!

HAHAHA it would be one of the longest hotstamps on a disc,
i like the idea of a special run BS TThumber though.
Of course it would help if it came with a good arm and throwing motion as well.

Good Luck Schweb!

ATTENTION: Someone Playing in the USDGC.

If you see Aleksey Bubis and/or Kelly Ganzel, tell them good luck! And tell them to keep their cool and forget the bad shots. Tell them we're watching them both and cheering them on, as well as the Tulsans.

Schweb, could you relay this message to these guys if you see 'em. And tell Ganzel that Colin said to throw the TL, he may giggle a little.

It looks like scores are being calculated after holes 4,9,14 & 18. The list is sorting players by score according to what updated grouping they are in. For instance, Mike Young is -3 and leading the grouping of all players that have scores for the first four holes. Once his group has recorded scores through nine holes they will be moved to the next section. At least that is what I have observed is going on?

ck34
Oct 13 2005, 04:04 PM
Not talking about the Round score pages. Click on the Overall Score link at the top, not Round 2, and see how it looks. That's the problem. It's not just the player grouping problem for sorting but there also is no first column to indicate what place everyone is in.

Luke Butch
Oct 13 2005, 04:11 PM
Climo at -3 after 4.

Stats get updated first for each individual player, then are included on the main page. Go to overall, then click on a player's name to see their stats.

This is kind of sad...not trying to hate, but I'd think each state would want to send their best. I think each state should have a qualifier to decide...either a separate event, or the winner of a stated event gets the rep spot. What would be even better is if the entry fee was paid with the payout from the event, or even some of the travel costs associated. It'd be awesome for a state rep to have a paid entry, and $500 for travel costs already set aside...even if it's more of a casual event, only 35-40 players @ $20 a pop would be needed to cover the entry and $500 in travel costs.

2 more eagle 3 on the par 5 #12 hole for a total of 4 eagles today on that hole
