Yes, it's almost summer, and that means LOSO! Live Oak City Park, now home to 37 permanent holes, will host the 2005 Live Oak Summer Open. I will serve as your humble TD for this awesome 2 day PDGA B-Tier event. We already have $200 in added cash and it will just go up from there, so don't miss this one! Next year, this needs to be scheduled not on the weekend before worlds. The third of my favorite courses that I will miss this year.
Not my call on the dates, James, this just got handed to me. Not sure how the dates were picked, but I'm sure it went through the vetting process. I hope!! Besides, Worlds, Shmurlds :D

No, I'm not mad at anyone in particular. It just kind of irks me. I mean, from June to August, we have like 12 weekends and one good two-day tourney that I look forward to in south-central Texas. The weekends around pro and am worlds should be reserved for the lesser tourneys.

Apr 13 2005, 01:46 PM
This usually conflicts with Am Worlds. Because of the bigger music festival in Eastern PA that occurs when Pro Worlds usually happens, the two Worlds got switched this year.
With Am Worlds being in Tulsa next year, LOSO may be pro-only in 2006. :)
Edit: I agree James. It's Atwood's fault.... :)
Well, thanks, we'll take that as a compliment! And I agree, hopefully that will be taken into consideration in '06.

May 05 2005, 03:36 PM
No, you have to run the drawing to see who goes to the USDGC from TX.
Mr. Atwood, we would be honored by your presence!
james_mccaine
May 05 2005, 03:55 PM
Do you have to be at the tourney to be in the drawing?
Well, Mr. Schmidt, if that's not some secret code for "a lynch mob awaits," I may just try to pull this one off.
It'd feel weird, but cool to play in a LOSO. :)
Please tell me that you're keeping the dreaded Isle of Despair?
(If for no other reason than to frustrate McCaine.)
james_mccaine
May 05 2005, 04:02 PM

May 05 2005, 04:09 PM
You don't need to be present to win, but I think there was a matter of a stipend required to be considered as eligible. This would be used to cover the winners entry fee (hopefully).
You have to finish among the top 5 Texan scores in a B-Tier or above this year prior to and including LOSO. The winners will be drawn there. Everytime you qualify it gets you another ticket in the hat. I'll start publishing a list of qualified players soon.
Man, if I could just host a B-tier in Burnet (and only me, Bender, GnD, Vinnie and four other random players showed up), I'd have a shot to go in the hat.
Ah, the dreaded Island Hole. I may make this tougher this year, but easier on the scores... 30 foot perimeter around the basket. If you get it in, great, otherwise you putt from anywhere outside the perimeter with a stroke penalty. Should lessen the 2 to 8 score swings we have seen. Subject to change without notice, all rights reserved.
2-8? More like 2-15. :)
Brian, your suggestion would be way more popular of an idea, I'm sure.
I loved the idea of the hole the way it was. I felt it was easy enough to be fair, but dangerous enough to change a round if played incorrectly.
But I'm not sure if I would ever do it that way again, since there have been some solid arguments as to why it was inappropriate for a B-tier event. Even old dogs can change their stripes...er...or something like that. :)

Would that include the course record holder Mark? :D
I am really looking forward to playing the LOSO although the 27, 18 hole format is a worry. Why again won't the PDGA let us use golf carts? I think I will change up my sunshine and no rain dance to a cool day with a breeze day dance. Maybe I will need a caddy. ;)
Chris

May 05 2005, 04:30 PM
I thought the golf cart thing was only for NT events.
Both rounds of 27 are in the cool, Live Oak mornings. Only the round of 18 and the safari 9 are in the heat of the day. Besides we'll have lotsa water!
But I'm a flexible guy, or at least I was when I freestyled. What about 18, 18, 27, final 9? Or 21, 21, 27, Final 9?
Yes Thunder, you could be one of the random four. I'd only need to be in the top five to qualify for the drawing.
Those other three guys wouldn't give me a problem. :)

Now Mark don't you have a newspaper to write...slacker :D
Brian when I see you next I will show you some examples of formats as we spoke about last week. Some good and some bad for the reasons we spoke about. See you early next Thursday.
I kinda like 21, 21, 27, safari 9. We can start the Sunday round pretty early and really beat the heat.
:)
I don't wanna drift on the LOSO thread, but believe me Efrain, you'd be more than welcomed to be one of the top four, along with Thunder.
(BTW, everytime Chris talks about his course record, he should be required to include the fact that he also made the worst golf shot of his life during that round.)
Now back to your regularly scheduled LOSO/27 vs. 18/Isle of Despair/LODGA tourney talk. :)

LOSO is one of the best B-tiers in the state, despite my struggles last year, because of the great people in Live Oak and the City of Live Oak.
Its also one of the best collection of golf holes in Texas, since it has a little of everything and asks you to be able to do so much.
If you're out of state and wanting to see a great Texas summer PDGA event, you'd be well advised to make it to the 3rd Annual LOSO.

North San Antonio...
Do you know where the dog track is up North...near Universal City...exit is Topperwein, I believe? Well, the City of Live Oak is just a couple of miles to the East of there.
Should be able to get directions off the Course Directory.
Click on the link below "LODGA BABY", and you will find directions to Live Oak. And remember everyone, Live Oak is an incorporated city with their own Mayor, City Council, speed trap cops, etc., not a part of San Antonio (they hate that!!)

Portions of the proceeds from this tournament will go towards course improvements, so you are helping a great cause. Winning bidder of $30 or more will have the option of having their name on the back of the Tournament T-Shirt and a tourney t-shirt will be delivered to you once they are printed.
I have two of these great discs, and only one is on E-Bay right now. If you want the other one, also 170g, PM me and make an offer greater than $25.

Now that BAB has decided to go with C-Tier sanctioning, LOSO is the last event where a player can qualify to represent Texas at the 2005 USDGC. The winner will also be drawn from the eligible players at the awards. To see if you are qualified to register for the drawing, look at the current standings at LSDGA.com (http://www.lsdga.com/news/index.php) .
As of now, only one eligible player has registered.

Sure James, that sounds right!

Jun 02 2005, 01:33 AM
That is correct James, and LOSO is where the drawing will take place.
We are fortunate to have a number of women playing in Texas. With the efforts of great TDs like Chris Himing and Vinnie Miller, not to mention the success of the TWC, Texas is quickly becoming the place for women to succeed in disc golf. The ladies of live oak (LOLOs) headed up by our very own pro Danielle Vargas, and ably assisted by Laura "Baby" Karshis, are really moving things forward and getting more women involved in the sport every day.
In that spirit, I want to make the Live Oak Summer Open a venue where women feel comfortable and are excited to play. Hopefully, by lowering the entry fees for the ladies, while at the same time raising the payout, we can generate some excitement and get the ladies to LOSO! So all entry fees for ladies have been lowered by $10 (except recreational which is already $15) and I will pay out 110% to all women divisions. Maybe this will set a trend?
Entry fees for ladies are:
Entry Fees: (includes $3 per player PDGA Fee, and players package for all amateurs)
Open Women: $53
Master Women: $43
Grand Master Women: $43
Advanced Women: $33
Advanced Master Women: $33
Advanced Grand Master Women: $33
Intermediate Women: $23
Recreational Women: $15 (Players pack and trophy only as payout. But I'll add something special!)
Non-PDGA members add $5 to the entry fee.

Alrighty guys and gals, Laura Karshis has found a hotel deal for LOSO. Thanks Laura! There are other hotels in the area, but they are much higher due to summertime rates.
Motel 6 also off of IH-35 that cost is
$58.99 plus the 16.75 % tax rate = $68.87 for Friday & Saturday night. If you decide to stay on Sunday too the rate is lowered to $39.99 + 16.75% tax rate = $46.69 for Sunday only.
If you are interested in Motel 6 the address is 9503 IH-35 N. Distance from motel to course is about 10 mins max. Plus there is a little bonus! Motel 6 is right in between Adult Video and Adult Video Megaplex :D
Back to details, when reserving please ask for Linda Wright @ 210-654-4425 and make sure you let her know that you are calling for the LOSO Disc Golf Tornament rate. You must reserve by July 8th or rate will no longer be available, also you must reserve with a credit card to hold the room, but do not have to pay with it. There is no continental breakfast or anything like that.

City Hall Course:
15,16,17,17A*,17B*,18,19,20,21,22,23,23A,23B,23C,2 3D,23E*,24,25,26,27,28

for real , it makes no sense!! for instance you play solid golf all weekend and end up in the final 9 only to be stomped by all the big arms because they throw alot further!! kind of defeats the principles of skilled golf!!
thanks, I added back 11, forgot that one!
as to the safari golf, those are the only two long holes. the others are shorter like hole 4 which will be an island hole during the safari round only. Concrete will be OB during the safari round, so just throwing long is not good enough, you have to be accurate.

I don't know what Brian has planned, but you are assuming that because the length is long, that it favors big arms. You have played very long holes where accuracy is more important than length.

Hey Brian Count me in to help Staff ,I wont be able to play yet .So what ever you need me to do just let me know .
Thanks Billy, I will put you to work for sure!
The hole between 10 and 11 is 10P. We play to a practice basket between the parking lot and the ball field. It's about 150 feet and we play it pretty often during minis. We use the same teebox as 10, just throw the opposite direction from it. I like it because it allows the newer players a great opportunity to get an ace, although to my knowledge it has never been aced during a mini, hmmm!
Yes, the pool will be open, and I beleive Joe Minella is getting pool passes for all players and family members. It will be welcome relief I'm sure.
Ok, so here's my safari hole thoughts. Comments are welcome, but be nice, i'm old and i carry a badge!
All concrete OB!
1) Hole 1 played as an island hole. Roped off 30 feet circular perimeter. Throw and miss the island, go to the drop with a penalty. Keep throwing from the drop with penalty till you hit the island. Drop will be about 75 feet or so.
2) Hole 4 played as an island hole. Roped off in a square with a concrete border. Throw and miss the island, go to the drop with a penalty. Keep throwing from the drop with penalty till you hit the island. Drop will be about 75 feet or so.
3) Hole 5A. This hole plays about 450' from beside hole 5's basket to beyond the playground by the pavillion. Possibly a mando hole to protect the playground.
4) Hole 5B. This hole plays about 350' from the pavillion to the other side of the baseball field near old tee 6's box. I think this was used at last year's LOSO or one of the Texas 10s. I like it.
5) Hole 6, which now plays about 320 or so. (I'm measuring these later today and will update this.)
6) Tee 9 to Tee 13's basket. Maybe 420?
7) Hole 14 with OB rope on both sides of the fairway. Maybe about a 50' wide fairway for 280 feet.
8) Tee 15 to 16's basket. Concrete and beyond OB on the left side. Plays about 1,300 feet.
9) Tee 27 to 28's basket. Concrete and beyond OB on the right till you get to a divider drainage ditch, then it opens up safe on both sides. Plays about 1,300 feet.
hahahahahahah(evil laughter ) Old wise one you are very evil almost bordering on the Dark Side. :D

Actually, it worked out to 1,220 for 15-16 and about 850 for 27-28. I'll post exact measurements soon. Headed to Del Rio today. Remember, concrete OB and beyond on those holes makes them pretty tight, but the fairways are really nice and open like a ball golf course! Should be fun to watch, I'm looking forward to it.

Seewhere you never answered my question if you wanted a side bet? I will take a no response as a scared response. :D
Here is my personal opinion about Safari 9's. There still needs to be a variety of short and tough holes that form part of the original course. One reason not to change up the holes too much is so that the potential gallery actually knows where people are throwing to, and also so they can compare how they play that hole.
When it comes to long stretched out holes that is fine as long as it is tough enough that scores will likely flucuate. In Gonzales last Saturday several holes are a very bad length because 1 player can have 2 bad drives and an upshot and putt and the other person can have 2 good drives, upshot and a putt and get the same 4. This is purely because the hole is between shots. What Brian is doing on the OB cement should help which is good. I look forward to playing them in the final. :D

I think the safari is a pretty good mix of long and short and technical. 1 (island),4 (island),5a,5b,6,14 are all the same as you play in the first rounds, except for ob rope on 14 and of course the islands. yikes! The three long ones are 9-13, 15-16 (which Chris 4'd before!), and 27-28 which actually measures out at 725. But the last two have concrete AND beyond OB. Not easy for anyone including long arms. All the holes offer a decent viewing area for the gallery to follow and watch in awe :)
Thanks for the entry Chris! Don't forget flex doubles on Friday. I'll also take signups then as well.

The shorter holes sound good Brian. The OB rope is also good (I have played 2 USDGC's) but I am unsure about the length of the longer holes.
Yes I have shot a 4 on Hole 15 to 16 but realistically everyone will take a 5 whether they are a long or short arm.
Hole 27 to 28 is likely to be a simple 4 for the entire group.
Next time I am there we can both play them with a couple of Advanced buys and see what happens. My only concern is that the particular hole is likely to produce the same score regardless of good or bad throws like a couple were in Gonzales.
By the way Gary has lots of yellow rope I am sure you could use. :D Yellow rope and orange flags are going to a nightmare for some people.
Good job Brian, looks like the turnout will be a good one. We should think of a way to put my parents to work. I doubt my Dad will want to carry my bag all weekend.
Thanks again,

Jun 23 2005, 04:54 PM
#9 maybe?
I threw three mediocre shots and missed a makeable 20' putt for 4 in round 1.
Round 2 was good shot, bad (70') shot, mediocre shot, 30' putt.
Everyone seemed to 4 it, as long as they got some distance each shot.
#14 sticks out as well as an automatic 3. Uphill makes it tougher to run for a 2, but it's open enough to deliver a 3 from just about anywhere.
(Yeah it's thread drift.... :p)

I have a question. What happens during tournaments for recreational players? Is the park closed?
I am a casual player. My girlfriend and I like to travel to play courses. Of course, we schedule around tournaments. But, the weekend of the 15th, I have a feeling the Austinites will be playing the course to prepare for the tournament, and I'm not sure how the weekend of the 4th would fair.
Please advise. I was hoping to drive up and play Live Oak and then Universal City since I've never played either, always having gone on to Austin to play all of their courses.
Live Oak has 36 holes, there is plenty of room for all casual players anytime except during major tournaments like the LOSO on July 23-24. UC is always open and available. And did i mention, both courses are always mowed and trimmed!

How long have you been here ?
Last time I checked you had to live in Texas for at least 15 years before you could apply for Texan naturalization, and that process takes at least 5 more years.

Hmmmm, always changing his name??? Are you on the run or something? Are you one of these people that has a respectable day job, but robs banks in the evening? If so, give some of the loot to Pete, he needs it. :D

Really, good riddance to the bum. ;)
Brian, on my cheesy resolution screen, it looks like you are touting the "Live Oak 2005 Bummer Open" :D
Open the good eye. I see "Summer."

Hey everybody just a reminder on Hotel information:
There are other hotels in the area, but they are much higher due to summertime rates.
Motel 6 also off of IH-35 that cost is
$58.99 plus the 16.75 % tax rate = $68.87 for Friday & Saturday night. If you decide to stay on Sunday too the rate is lowered to $39.99 + 16.75% tax rate = $46.69 for Sunday only.
If you are interested in Motel 6 the address is 9503 IH-35 N. Distance from motel to course is about 10 mins max. Plus there is a little bonus! Motel 6 is right in between Adult Video and Adult Video Megaplex
Back to details, when reserving please ask for Linda Wright @ 210-654-4425 and make sure you let her know that you are calling for the LOSO Disc Golf Tournament rate. You must reserve by July 8th or rate will no longer be available, also you must reserve with a credit card to hold the room, but do not have to pay with it. There is no continental breakfast or anything like that.
Let me know if anybody has any questions.
Hows the video store?
:o

Don't worry about me Joe. It's time to claim my first victory of the year. (Dang, year's half over already )
The odds just aren't in your favor for the threepeat.

Gary:
One more USDGC question. If you are one of the top 5 Open scores at LOSO, can you wait and then pay your $20 after the results are in to make sure you qualify to be part of the drawing?

I have to play this tournament, the TD has been working his arse off, got to go. Who's running the TX10 event at Lewisville?
Just pay already. You're a top 5 finisher. If you don't believe me, maybe AK can explain it to you. But remember, hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side.
