another good point, I thought i was making this easier :D
I will still wave the stroke penalty if it's visible, I don't want anyone climbing in trees to measure if they are 5 meters up or not ;)
losotd
Jul 21 2005, 11:49 AM
Anyway, Tony the disc would not be relocated since we can't get it down, just marking the lie underneath it?
disctance00
Jul 21 2005, 11:51 AM
Just waive the 2m rule altogether, a lost disc is a lost disc, Ams and Pros alike get too confused anyhow...except Bender he knows the rulebook inside and out. I heard rumors he sleeps with it under his pillow. :D
tbender
Jul 21 2005, 11:53 AM
Ah, misunderstood on my part. Seen some places on 11B under 2m where the disc was visible, but unretrievable (without an army of beavers and Skillsaws). I agree with those visible and identifiable over 2m being penalty free, as the rule is being waived. (You're too generous Brian!)

2m rule?
what!
I would think the best way to keep it simple.
If above 2 meters its.....OB
Texas doesn't have enough trees not to have the 2 meter rule inffect. Now in Michagan I could see it.

If tee boxes were set up taking the thumber and the big hyser out I could see no OB tree strokes. but I don't know many course in Texas that can do that with trees that are bushes compaired to other place in the country

Jul 21 2005, 12:15 PM
Live Oak ain't Round Rock, we actually have trees discs can get stuck in, but not that many that hang over the basket. I'm going to give this a try, i always hated that stupid rule, you have the drive of your life on hole 23 or 25 and then come down and your 7 feet off the ground. dumb. Don't want to get into a discussion on the merits of the rule, that has been hashed out many times by smarter guys than me. Just want to try something different.
vinnie
Jul 21 2005, 12:21 PM
I get a lil defensive when someone for live oak speaks of round rock....I didn't bring up the word "ditch"....watch it feller :D

PARKING UPDATE
Just got word that disc golfers cannot park in the pool parking lot, it will be reserved for pool patrons only. You can park across the street or along the street on both sides of Shin Oak. There is also parking on Eagle Scout Trail, but I'm not sure where that is.

The "Where's My Red Wildcat" long distance competition will be held after the final 9 on Sunday. Here's what I have in the program...
After the safari round on Sunday, the distance competition will be held in the channel behind hole 24's basket. For $5 you can throw any three discs in one of three divisions: Big Dogs, Chihuahuas or Poodles (ladies only). Spotters will mark where your disc lands with a flag. Throws must be in the air (no rollers!), and slides along the ground or concrete will not count, only where the disc lands from the air. You can throw three more discs for $5 after you have completed your throws, but you are limited to six throws for this competition. First place in each division will receive a trophy and 50% of the distance competition entry fees. Second place receives 30% and third place receives 10%. 10% goes to the tournament. Only your furthest throw counts for the top three. The other throws are discarded. You cannot compete in more than one division. Your discs must have your name or PDGA # on them for easy identification.
I can hear it now, : Robbie can you go retrieve the water jugs?

If you are asking about getting in to the drawing:
If you are going to be there, get with Chris sometime before the awards (Saturday would be better). If you aren't going to be there, I need it before Sunday so I can let them know.
paypal payments to

If you are asking about the USDGC if you win the drawing, they require that you be paid and registered by Aug 1.

Absolutely first rate tourament. This is quickly becoming one of the premiere events in the state of Texas.
And about those burgers from the Outback on Saturday? Hit the spot perfectly. And the cold dip in the pool between rounds? Even better.
Oh, and my apologies to all who were subjected to my car's alarm going off during the 3rd round near hole 22. Something set off the motion detector alarms inside the car...

Thanks, Joe for letting us enjoy the pool.

Thanks again to Brian & his wife Sylvia and to all the staff that made this come together for 160 players! WOW.
Thanks also to the great Live Oak Parks department...what a great mix of holes. Cooling off in the pool is a great bonus after those long 21 hole rounds!
The Outback burger was great! Yummmmmmm. Improved my second round score by 2 shots.
Kudos to Carlos for his first pro win! If you want to learn how to CRUSH a sidearm shot, he's the man to learn it from.
See y'all next year! (better sign up early though...there is a good chance that the field will fill)

All of the DNFs need to be listed as 999, not 7*9 or 7*21.
It effects the ratings calculations if they are not.
It treats the scores as if they were real and drags down the ratings for the group.

Phil showed up late, and the card was turned in with all 7's
so did they not let him play? or just turned in the wrong score? does not make sense also it appears I would just leave Phil with no score for the final so your order of finish is not screwed up and he did finish 3 rounds. not a DNF 999

I think he went home for lunch and his buddy called him 3 minutes before tee-off. Jim is correct on what happened. Definitely he was welcomed to play out the holes. He decided not to play as he was then 11 shots behind 3rd. A first tourney snafu for a solid player.

Payout posted. Total $5,362.
Based 0n 162 players and the payout, LOSO would rank #7 in total players and #23 in payout. If the 28 rec players had not played for trophy only, but payout, we'd probably be up around #21. Not bad Live Oak!

"Where's My Red Wildcat??" Long Distance Competition. Named for one of our favorite Round Rocker's and message board poster Seewhere. I actually got to watch some of the Big Dogs, and wow, these guys can crush! The winner of the big dogs actually had the three furthest throws, but according to the rules could only get paid for the furthest throw which measured in at around 495 feet.
Big Dogs Division:
1st Robbie Bratton $50 + Trophy
2nd Erron Salazar $30
3rd Jimmy Zamora $10
Chihuahua Division
1st Roger King $23 + Trophy
2nd Monte Cantu $15
3rd Jerry Knigston $5
Poodles Division
1st Danielle "Big Arm" Vargas $13 + Trophy
2nd Laura "Thanks for the Hug!" Coffey $8
3rd Deatra "World Champ" Hunter $3
what were the distances??
Did seewhere not play?

Congrats Brian. It looks like it was a well run event, and everyone had fun.
Does TX have a new open player known as Mark Vargas? Congrats either way. :)

Now that most of the details have been posted for the 2005 Live Oak Summer Open, Id like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make this a successful event.
As anyone who runs an event of this scope knows, it takes a team effort and our LOSO staff did an incredible job! Laura Karshis you are an incredible asset to any team. Laura ran the merchandise sales and raffle ticket sales. Not once did she complain about the heat, the crowds, or the work. She also got the hotel deal and Outback restaurant. You are amazing! Michaela Steele did an incredible job helping out wherever I needed her. Registration, selling merchandise, sorting score cards, whatever we asked, she jumped to the task. James Pellman, we are so lucky to have you on this team. You keep me straight, and after entering in 534 scores, we only posted two wrong that had to be redone. Thank you!! Keith Baker was there every morning to help set up signs, put out water, and did his level best to keep the water jugs filled all day. What a guy! Wayne Atkinson also helped set up, keep water jugs filled, run the long distance competition, etc., etc. Thanks!! Reuben Campos was there early Saturday and Sunday to put out baskets and do anything else we needed him to do before going out to play. Thanks Reuben! Corey Peschke helped set up and then went out and spotted hole 25 for all four rounds. Spotting in 100 degree heat is hard work, and we all appreciate it Corey! Jim Bob Karshis worked with Circle 786 to get free ice, water and sodas. We all thank you Jim Bob!! Bill Karshis helped with the merchandise sales and kept Laura company during the down time. Thanks Bill! Billy Nelson helped with the merchandise payout and other areas, even though he was worn out from 3 hot rounds of play. Thanks Billy! Nelle Vargas helped during the crush time when she wasnt winning the womens open division and the long distance competition... congratulations! I also want to thank Vinnie Miller, Chris Himing and Billy Nelson for TD advice as I needed it. Finally, thanks to my wife Sylvia for helping with registration and score cards, and minding the store so I could have a chance to watch a few holes of play.
I also want to thank the City of Live Oak for allowing us to converge on their park en masse. Joe Minella and staff did a lot of prep work for this tournament, and helped out early each morning and late each evening getting us ready or helping us tear down. He also provided the free pool passes!
Thanks to all of our sponsors who donated merchandise or cash or discounts to this event! RT Evans, the Red Rock of Shame, the Waterloo Disc Golf Club, Circular Productions, John Frost, David mcKibbin, Evan McKibbin, Chevaun McKibbin, the Ladies of Live Oak, the Live Oak Disc Golf Alliance, Sport Unlimited, Tony and Kat Bender, Circle 786 Grocery, Kimiko Barling who did an amazing job on our graphics, Jody Curtis, Corey Peschke, the Texas 10 and Chris Himing, Double R Disc Club and Chris Ware and Vinnie Miller, Wade Dauner, Brian Paschal, Urbangrounds.com, Hill Country Disc Golf and Keith Baker, the Outback Steakhouse, and Twisted Flyer!!
To those of you who I snapped at during this event, I apologize! It can get pretty stressful at times and having ten people talk to you at the same time can drive anyone insane. I want to apologize to the two people who signed up but never got into my computer. We got them on cards in time, but I have no idea how I missed that! I also had someone upset with me for stroking them after I told them there would be no penalty. After conferring with Vinnie, and re-reading that incredibly complicated rules book, we found the paragraph that showed he should have been stroked. He was upset when it showed up in his score. And finally an apology to the players who had to wait an extra 30 minutes in the sun while I fixed a computer snafu. We discovered late that the computer was sorting the scores improperly, and had to redo all the cards. Since I wrote the program, it was my fault, but its fixed for next year!
I want to thank you, the players for showing up in unexpected numbers... 162 players! I hope you came because you love Live Oak, you love great disc golf, and you have confidence we can put on a smooth event, albeit with a few snafus! I wanted this to be a professional, well run event and I think we succeeded for the most part. I hope everyone enjoyed the format. I know it was long, but I believe it tested everyones skill set and endurance, and in the end the winners are to be congratulated. But everyone who finished was a winner in my book! We had a very nice gallery for the safari 9, and probably 50-75 people watching the long distance competition. Thank you so much for participating in the events or watching at the end.
Till next year, I bid you farewell. Brian.

Will do!
The T.D. lil bird told me $80(part of raffle) goes with the Texas ladies. Making for $780 just so Texas is represented.
To add to all that....... OUTLAWS raffle processed go with them also.
I envision $1000 to cover Laura and Andi and anything over buys all the Texas ladies going to the USWDGC a round or two of adult beverages. They can toast their Texas brothers!
Thanks to ALL!

Brian congrats on the great turnout. I think you got me by a few. :D Live Oak steps up again, well done.
Just remember everyone that a TD's job is not done when he drives out of the park. There is countless hours of things to do afterwards. Thanks Brian.
Until next time... :D

I made the foolish attempt to thumb over the trees on 15b. Got stuck in a cedar about 60 feet short wound up in jail. Took a six.

I thought that Int. women would get rated. I think they played the same layout on the Lake/City Hall/Lake format that the men did. Actually, I think only Rec. men played the short tees on those few holes, so rec women could get rated as well. Am I mistaken?

Jul 26 2005, 06:12 PM
Lance - i did the same thing and lost a sidewinder.
...so if anyone sees a grape 175, lemme know. Oh, and a 176 blue Zbuzz in the puddle behind 8.
Thanks Live Oak!!
I got stuck in a tree I think about 3 times. Also lost a gummy monster on 15B if anyone comes across it.
Thanks again to Brian and staff for a great weekend!!!!!
and to all who stayed at casa del vargas, it was a pleasure to host you most excellent guests. Dinner was great on sat.
To my great friend Milty it was great to hang out with you again I had a great time. I think my brother has a crush on you. But i told him you were already taken. :D
M. Vargas signing out and thanking all for a most memorable weekend!!!!!!!!!!

Jroc, that's a good question for Gary Duke, he helped put the layouts together. I just cut and pasted the scores in.

Yah, thanks to you Vargas's and of course to you Schmitty for running a great tourney. My only complaint was DFL in Open, but I have decided that is the last time that will ever happen (whether I play rec or just play better than one other open player). Will travel the 7 hours again next year if I am still at Ft Puke and not the far away sandbox. P.S. Sorry Vinster for chunking that Orc right at your chest. I have been known to grip lock a disc here and there (ask the people on my round 2 card - hole 5). Thanks Peeps!! Chad "Uncle Milty"
