Jan 18 2005, 08:33 PM
OK, so where is it? Is it a permanent course? It isn't listed on the PDGA directory. Does it have baskets or other permanent targets or tee signs, or do I need to be led around blindfolded by someone who is initiated into the Bayside club in order to play?

A:"No and no".

If that's the case, perhaps this should be under the "other clubs" heading, since SoCal's site states: "Our primary mission is to bring the sport back to the prominence it once had, through a series of PDGA-sanctioned tournaments"?:eek:

And we are working on hosting PDGA-sanctioned tournaments, but need to continue to "work" before we can do so. Is that a teeview? At least 285' to clear? Unless it cuts in dramatically on the right [and Mr. Post-per-word would lead us to believe that water goes out to the ocean], that layup-landing area on the left seems pretty HARSH, with the road directly behind, and being sloped, and all.

ANHYZER
Jan 19 2005, 11:26 AM
Yes, that is hole 16's tee...About 300 to clear the water...It does not cut in at the right, in fact it gets longer the more you stray from the left lay up area. It is our signature hole, so of course it is harsh. Birdies are rare, bogeys are common, and pars are textbook  We'll have you down sometime.

Birdies are rare, except when I play :) I am about 65% on that hole.

Rizbee, who are you? I would love to answer some of your questions, but if I have no idea who you are, I don't really feel too compelled to indulge you.

When the time comes, everyone will be able to play our course, until then, we just like to torture people with wonderful pictures of a great course :)

We are hoping to host a PDGA C tier next year, this year we will still be doing the "underground" procedure that we did last year.
Depending how SoCal does this year, we may or may not discuss the affiliation with SoCal for PDGA debut. I am a current SoCal member, but DVince is not this year. And we have our reasons for our reasoning :).

All in all Dave Vincent and Ryan Gwillim run this event. Dave designed the course and I do most of the TD work. We are both nice people who love Disc Golf and love San Diego, and we are very loyal to the sport and our community of local golfers. Any direct questions that we feel we can answer we will, but at this point we don't want 200 golfers to show up on opening day this spring, so we will choose to keep this event an invite only event of locals and close friends*** until we can logistically handle more golfers without it being a detriment to the event.

Bottomline:
The course is great, everyone that has played it loves it.
And as soon as it is possible and viable, everyone will have a chance to play it.

***Rhett, I am giving you and your daughter "close friend" status this year, and I'll let you know when and where to show up when the time comes. Certain restrictions will apply, of course ;).

Being a lefty, and an International Grandmaster ;) who drives in the 285-315 range, I'm toast!!

How'd y'all finance this? Facilitate this?

...I've also got to ask what kind of expectations you have of SoCal's season? No need for explanation of reasoning for reasons of reticence, just what would be considered 'success' enough to join...if that's not too blunt.

ryangwillim
Jan 19 2005, 05:16 PM
Any administrative costs that we have, I pay for out of my pocket. And same with facilitating things, we just make it happen.

In regards to SoCal, I can't give you a bullet-point list of things that have to happen in order for me to be interested next year. I am just interested in how things are going to pan out throughtout THIS season.

If you want to talk about the Southern California disc golf scene, then start a thread devoted to that, but this is for Bayside.

Not trying to be richard (this time), but this topic area is for the Southern California Disc Golf Association which is an Affiliated Club within the PDGA. It's a model boat pond. How deep could it be? :)

I dove in to get a predator that tree macked into the middle of the pond. It was at least 12' deep where my predator was, and it might get deeper even more toward the middle. Plus there are clams with razor sharp shells in there, I have two scars on my foot from walking into the water.

But while I was down at the bottom I grabbed two other discs that just happened to be laying there, and there were more. I estimate that there are around 40-60 discs in that pond from our adventures last year! We had some weeks where we lost 6 discs in one round (Go Ike! You can make it across!).

Sounds like you need one of those rakes that look like an aerial TV antenna, like they use at the Memorial. One of those with a long rope, and you could dredge the whole thing.

12 feet deep? What the heck was it for before they started the little boat races? I thought they built it for that.

Lol, good schtuff!
I'm not bitter, I know that golfers that want to play Bayside will play Bayside, and those who don't, can play EI or wherever else they want. And like I have said before, we really don't want 500 ppl at Bayside anyhow, so our numbers should stay somewhat small and intimate of just da tru S.D homies.

I might take a couple mid-season breaks from TDing to come play EI dubs though, sometimes u just need to not be in charge of things, I know u know what I mean, Rhett.

Hock,
You are more than welcome to play with us. I think my standards for entry are you have to average par at Morley Field. If your average is even or better, I'm cool with you playing (as long as I like you). With a few exceptions, based mostly on favortism, like Emily, she averages probably 2-4 over, but she is better than a lot of you guys, so she's in. Same with Eddy Spracklen, I like him, so he can play.

KG,
R.I.P.

Rhett, you can come on our third tuesday, I want to work out the early bugs before the important people show up.

Bayside will be begin whenever DVINCE said, I am sitting in a cafe in Bowling Green looking out a window at the rain and wind. Next weekend is the Scott Killian Memorial, then I'm going to take a week long break, so I'll probably start running the show the week after SKM. If DVINCE wants to be the TD before that, he take care of things, But I think I'll start my involvement on the 19th.

This year we are capping the weekly entries to 30 golfers in order to stay in compliance with city regulations on park usage without a permit. First 30 ppl to show up are in, NO ONE ELSE will be allowed to play. Keep that in mind, no more showing up at 5:00 for a 4:45 tee off!

I'd like to send out a shout to KG and Lino for their help with getting the scorecards situated while I was doing the players' meeting.

Along with the winners and Dave's ace, other notables were:

Kevin Gomez won CTP on hole two with I am guessing a crushing anhyzer? He took home a brand new fitted Innova hat.

Tom Olson won CTP on hole twelve, he took home a brand new Discraft Venom driver.

First week started out so much better than I had anticipated! No one gave me serious crap about having to sign a contract, and everyone seems to be cool with the rules we have for out there. I will write a more formal report after I look at the cards, I just wanted to thank everyone that showed up, it was a great time, and I even got to play this week, thanks to Daniel Lichtman donated my entry fee!

More to come!

KG also helped me with marking all the tee pads...Thanks KG

There will be another CTP next week...maybe more than one

There was an issue brought up to me by email from one of our players who does not go on the board, so I'll address it here also. Out of bounds was clearly discussed in the players meeting, but I will reiterate it for everyone. The street and gutter are OB, discs completely surrounded by water are OB... Bayside that, there is no other OB. The rocks beyond the sand are NOT OB, and there is no relief given. The only stupid question is the one not asked.

Dave and Ryan,

I have some Innova Proline stuff that I don't use. I will bring it with me next week and you can use it for CTP's whenever you like. Off the top of my head I believe I have a Beast and a Teebird-L.

I'm sure everyone noticed a bottle neck on hole 17 when we play 16 long, so I figured something out.
http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/BaysideChanges.JPG
If we move 17's tee over by the handrails, we create a bigger water shot , and still keep 16 in all it's glory....When we play 16 short, we will use the original tee for 17

The problem that I see with doing this is that that is about where the majority of the drives land for hole sixteen anyhow. Maybe move seventeen's teepad to the left side of those handrails, but then we still have the issue of walking straight through someone's fairway. Dave do you still have that topographical map of Bayside? I want to play around with it.

hand rails is where I lay up. Some people can't make it over the water.

Apr 15 2005, 04:13 PM
I just got off the phone with Dave. We are going to try the changes he originally proposed, and we are confident that they will work. If they don't we will figure something else out.

KG, if you are trying to tell me you can't reach the other side, then you must be joking, you are senior crusher!

For ppl that don't want to risk the water, they can lay up somewhere to the left of the handrails, and play a long upshot.

That was probably the most fun I have had playing doubles in months! I've always said it, but I will reiterate...I'll take you for a partner against anyone! Much fun, and tying for the win was cool too.

Dave,

I won't be able to make it to Bayside tonight. I will be trapped at work till around 6:00. However, next week I will be there for sure and I will have CTP prizes in hand.

164 white pro line Beast
171 blue pro line Teebird-L
166 Polaris LS (I think that is it)

All disc are brand new and unthrown. Since I am donating the CTP prizes, can I pick the CTP holes?

Good luck tonight everyone!

Richard
