I'd sure like to know myself...those thumbnails are all 'but' 3-7Kb. Some of these big photos must take ages for the dial-up folks to load. I seem to recall a suggested size of 30-50Kb [from old board days]; some of these [on the thread] are many times that.

Did you try a PM to SwePeter, Chris?

...yet another earmark....

I've always used a program called photothumb you can get a free trial version (http://www.downloadfreetrial.com/web/web_1373.html) it allows you to convert 10 pics at a time

I've used this program to create photo directories for my personal site.

If you think your course has tight fairways, check this one out! This is Richmond Hill in Asheville, NC

http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/Tight1_tn.JPG (http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/Tight1.JPG)
This is hole 1, 300' with the basket off to the right of the so called "fairway".

http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/Tight2_tn.JPG (http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/Tight2.JPG)
This hole is 405' through the tunnel with a deep valley on the left hand side, basket tucked on the righthand side.

http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/Tight3_tn.JPG (http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/Tight3.JPG)
This one takes the cake! 700' and your guess is as good as mine to where the fairway is! The basket plays to the right.

http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/Tight4_tn.JPG (http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/Tight4.JPG)
This is a fun hole! The basket is straight ahead 280' across the valley and through a 2' gap between some trees. If you look closely you can see the yellow band of the Discatcher.

In my opinion, with no disrespect intended to the designers, those are not good golf holes. These boil down to luck, and not skill. The player should have options, which require skill to execute.

Players who learn on this course are at a huge advantage though wouldn't you agree!

pictures never do golf holes justice.

If you have options, you must not be playing a NC woods course.

The evil 700 foot hole has options. you can go right through the trees to a landing zone, but be careful of the creek, it's OB. or you can throw a thumber through a tight gap in the middle, or you can throw a shot on the left side. Once you get past the tough tee shot, it's a long road type chute that favors a righty. If you lefty hyzer out on your way to the basket, you can easily go OB. the basket is up a hil and a blind approach from your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th shot, depending on how many trees or creeks you hit.

A 3 on this hole is a miracle, but doable.

The shot across the valley is one great golf hole. it is not 2 feet, Chris is being a little dramatic. It's more like 5'.

Lots of Fun, that Asheville course. And a great tournament, if you ever get a chance, the Mountain Disc Golf Experience rocks!

re: "luck course"
I've yet to see what I consider to be a "luck" course.

To me a luck course is where you, say, have 10 guys play each other 10 times and you get 6 or 7 winners depending on who got lucky.

Much more likely on this "luck" course, the same 1 or 2 guys will win (well maybe a third). My guess is it'll probably be a veteran DGer that throws straight, has a great forehand roller disc and best straddle putt technique.

Jan 11 2005, 02:09 AM
Whether luck is involved or not, it certainly doesn't look like much fun to play.

Wow, I've got a method named after me! :D;)

As an extra help for anyone wanting to use this way of posting pics:
1. Create a thumbnail (smaller version of your photo) using your favorite image editing software, save it with a different name.
2. Upload your photo and thumbnail to a web location
3. Start writing a post on the board, copy the code excerpt below into your post and adjust to your URL (web address) to where you uploaded your pics. Make sure that all code is on the same line, i.e. no CR/line breaks. (For readibility reasons I've entered line breaks in the code excerpt, but they will make this method fail if used "live")
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
enter_full_URL_for_your_thumbnail_picture_here
(enter_full_URL_for_photo_here)enter_photo_title_o r_description_here</pre><hr />

Code example from one of my own pics:
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
http://hem.bredband.net/discdragon/photos/LinneaFredin_Kalmar10_tn.jpg
(http://hem.bredband.net/discdragon/photos/LinneaFredin_Kalmar10.jpg)Keep the joy intact (Linnea Fredin, Sdertrns Frisbee Klubb)</pre><hr />

which will look like this on the board, with the thumbnail pic clickable, leading to the full size photo:

This post is actually a reply to many posting to the Richmond Hill pics, but I made it to Matt since I very much agree with him. Richmond Hill is most certainly not a luck course. It is a skill, finesse and shot makers course. I've seen luck shots, and probably designed some, but there is not a luck shot at Richmond Hill, unless of course you didn't hit the intended line, in which case you didn't make the freaking shot with skill or finesse. I'm not a local to Asheville. It's a two and a half to three hour drive to my outpost in the Brushy Mountains and have only played Richmond a couple of times and enjoyed it immensely. Wish it was closer.

Robert, have you played there? And you still think it blows? I took a Florida flatlander, and Hall of Fame member, there last year. Playing it cold, having never seen the course, he played a beautiful, finesse under par round. At the time, other than the poison ivy, he professed to really enjoying the course.

And Chris, good on ya mate, as you did say it was an enjoyable experience that you would repeat. And thanks for the pics of a course that is in my personal top ten. And the across the valley shot gap is more like 8'8" /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif.

And Kurt, you pretty much hit it dead on.

Wow. I am so glad you posted those pic's. I am trying to go back and make a log of all the courses I have played. I took a trip to Ashville last summer from NY and tried to play as many courses as possible in 3 days. After it was over, all of the courses blended, and I couldn't remember the name of a single one of them. LOL. But this is definately one of them. I loved that course!

I don't have any problems with three out of the four holes pictured from the Richmond Hill course in Asheville. There's a small, but well defined fairway in each. Take some power off your shot to ensure that you hit the fairway. New England, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina disc golfers could nail those fairways regularly.

I do have issue with the 700 foot hole, that's just ridiculous.

Cdale600
Jan 11 2005, 12:16 PM
Memphis/North Mississippi has been accused of not having fairways before. But even we would call those holes 'Carney Golf'. Nothing wrong with it from an objective standpoint, but not a course I would travel to play. Just personal preference...

Prolly just something in the 'language'...before the picture 'opened', there was that 28 x 30 thumbnail, then the larger of the two displayed...so the info is likely there, but there might be an uneeded space, or something. NOT A COMPUTER EXPERT!!!

We never really got "stuck" but a few times we had to go back and forth just to get 1' ahead, also pushing the car was needed in a few places. It took a while to go anywhere. The best part was San Saba was actually 45 minutes down a dirt road . . . . so we pretty much stayed at the course and didn't do much. Not fun! btw . . . if you like how that road looks, imagine a teebox being there. Without teepads the tournament got a little crazy

For anyone looking to make your pic's smaller- If you don't have photoshop, or some other program, you can also use Paint. Right click the photo. Choose open in paint. Click Image then Stretch/Skew. In the Strech boxes, choose 50%. If that's still too big, keep reducing until you get the right size.
When done click File, then Save As. Just give it a new name, and make sure you save it as a JPEG.

Chris,
That was a mess. In case you don't know we have moved WD Pro weekend to Circle R in Wimberley. Weather won't be such a factor there. Hope you and Mark make it back.

This hole was a lot of fun. A lot higher than it looks in the picture. People on left are at the long tee, people on the right are near the short.

Yeah, that's the Jrva signature hole, #14, real nice. Downhill, 192 meters from the long tee to the long pin, 137 from the short tee. Very challenging when windy ;)

Kicki Dahlstrm putting on 14. You can see the short tee plateau behind and above her.

And Jeannie, starting on 12 and having to climb the hill twice is always a real bummer... ;)

Very Challenging. That was definately one time that I was glad I didn't have the box. I could watch the other people throw, and see what the wind was doing. Two people in my group went off to the right for what seemed a mile away. Oops, that's right, I was one of them in the first round  Second round I played it great :D

And Jeannie, starting on 12 and having to climb the hill twice is always a real bummer...

You're not kidding. Especially when I got to the top and saw a group of people standing and waiting to watch us throw. I hate that. If I remember correctly, I had the tee but I let the others go so I could catch my breath. But I played it well, not so embarrassing. Playing in that tournament was so different than the ones I have played here. I was not used to a gallery of people lining the baskets and watching. :o

I kinda like this site...lets you see what the course is like before you play it...

http://www.playdg.com

Here's a couple of my favorite holes from those courses that I play:

http://www.playdg.com/bryantlake/?h=11

Hint: Don't park your car in that lot on the right. ;)

http://www.playdg.com/bassettcreek/?h=6

That chasm is worse than it looks in the picture. Those trees really like to grab your disc and throw it down into the creek.

http://www.playdg.com/bassettcreek/?h=8

I really like that hole. Once you get past the mando, you have to hit that gap in the pine trees. Then, theer's the chasm again with a gap in the trees, but more options to go up or around (especally if you have a good, sharp right-hand sidearm or left hand hyzer. There's quite a bit of stuff that can be in the way of the basket so many times you're stuck having to lay up to putt. I supposed a huge arm, or really good player could get past the first two gaps in one throw, but if the road is OB then it's a pretty risky shot. There's still a lot of stuff that you can hit. Plus, this isn't really a course that's designed to be played by top players, so I guess that really isn't a concern. I just like it because it's a long hole that rewards accuracy.

http://www.playdg.com/rosland/?h=6

I like that one because I can practice midrange hyzer, midrange anhyzer and sidearm shots all on the same hole.

http://www.playdg.com/moir/

I like that course because it's a great place to introduce people to the sport. Just bring a putter for each person, a cooler full of grillables and you're good to go. Plus you really have to putt accurately to get them to drop in those baskets.

Yeah, I was really impressed the first time I saw the http://www.playdg.com site too. If they don't have any courses near you, they do have a way to submit courses to them. It works pretty good, I submitted my hometown course, Land of Memories (http://www.playdg.com/landofmemories/) and also Riverside Park in St Peter to them. If you click on the submit tab, they have a "how to" on sending them info.

I also find thier 404 errors funny 404 error (http://www.playdg.com/test.html)

That's the signature 18th hole at Tinicum, how could you forget it? :D

The polehole is in the woods straight ahead of you, over 760 feet away. The "short" pin position is 760 and the long position on the bank of the canal is nearly 800 feet. I have scored a birdie three on this pro par four only twice in my life, and that was to the short pin.

Jeannie
Jan 14 2005, 07:08 PM
:DOh believe me, I didn't forget it! Just couldn't remember the hole#

Jan 15 2005, 03:05 AM
Seems a little open to be a par 4? Unless there is always a fierce 20mph headwind, I can easily hit that pin in two, throwing an Orc then a Roc, and I am just an Am.

This pic does not do it justice; http://webpages.charter.net/wrad/Golf/Holes/hole05.htm
but this is our signature hole. Ignore the distance at the top. I measured it myself with a wheel and a tape.
A: 412ft
B: 706ft
C: 555ft

Once at the short pin, you start through the "large" chute. On the right two large oaks, and to the left an OB fence covered by large trees and brush. Once at 560ft, the fairway makes a left turn into the "small" chute, it is only 40ft wide and 140ft long, surrounded by heavy brush.

We consider it a par 3, but for amatuers a 4 is good/standard. I have only gotten a 3 on it twice (in the long placement, the two short pins are easy 3's), once it practice and once in a tournament. Basically if you do not get your tee shot 430ft or more you do not have a chance at a three, the up shot has too tight of a turn and then too far to go while straightening out. Most people obviously roll this hole as long as the grass is cut.

In addition to my wonderful 3's on this hole, I have also gotten the dreaded double circle 8. Ouch! This hole is a killer, and being hole #5, it can really ruin a good round early.

Not to thread drift, but if a 3 only happens once in a blue moon, wouldn't that make that hole a par 4? Has anyone ever 2'd it? Probably not...therefor its a par 4.

(Could be a tweener though....tough [*****] 3, but reletivly easy 4.)

Jan 15 2005, 06:35 PM

Ok, if you somehow throw two great shots and park the hole and make the putt, you deserve a birdie. Which makes it a "true" par 4. According to you, if you throw two great shots and manage to get a 3, its supposed to be a par? Not in my book.

Par is defined as what a "Pro" player would get on average. Sounds like a 3 would be average.

Hey Ian I love looking at pictures, and I hope everyone else continues to post here too. :DPlease :DI could probably keep this thread going forever. I have over 1000 disc golf pics, but I have to say, none of them do the courses justice. The elevation changes just dont show, as you can see in some of these pics. I also have a lot of video, but I dont know how to share it.

Warwick is a beautiful course. We will be hosting our first NT event this year called the Skylands Classic at Warwick.

Jeffs review:
This is simply a fantastic course. The first nine holes play in the woods, while the back nine holes play in the open over some absolutely beautiful rolling hills. Most holes play over some hefty elevation changes, and theres an even mix of lefty and righty holes. The course features two sets of tee pads on every hole, a set of amateur standard tees and also a set of professional "Animal" tees, and two pin positions per hole, with a permanent polehole set in both. From the long tees to the long pin positions, the "World Class" layout measures over 9000 with a pro par of 68! (Hole 18 from the animal tee to the world class pin position measures almost 900 feet!) Due to the flexibility of the course, the beautiful holes, and just the sheer challenge of the world class layout, I think Warwick is one of the premier courses in the area

Did you like Carroll Marty at Worlds? Look at it now:

Carroll Marty 10 (http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/CarrollMarty10.JPG)
Carroll Marty 18 (http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/CarrollMarty18.JPG)
Carroll Marty 18 basket (http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/CarrollMarty18basket2.JPG)

If you thought the uphill #18 (#17 at Worlds) made a good sledding hill, you are right. That's glare ice. Lightspeeds are possible and it's impossible to climb back up, you have to use the stairs on 10.

Could be. I didn't see the exact pin position for the finals, but it looked like trouble if you overshot. That whole strip of beach is very narrow. There was a hefty wind blowing at that point too.

If you map the UH course on the directory, you can see where I lived, on that map, at St. Louis Drive. I'd guess an 8 minute walk. :( I remember seeing kids throwing what I thought were frisbess around, and trying to figure out what they were doing (nobody catching on the other end!)...I guess I did not realize they were 'discs'

I have also heard of a course on Ewa Beach, a basket course, but now I dont see it on the course diretory. I have been to that park, and man it would be a windy course! More windy then any course in Texas I have played!

Here's a picture of hole 1 at Maple Hill in Leicester, MA. 355' long with a 15' elevation drop. This has got to be one of the all time greatest disc golf photos, and one of the best holes, I've ever seen in my life.

A strong 340 foot drive will be necessary to carry the pond. Otherwise a 180 foot layup shot to the edge of the pond or a shot wide right into possible woods is your best bet. Going for it and getting a deuce on this disc golf hole could put you up a couple of strokes.

Next time you play that hole, look up to the right. It is a $$$ hyzer if you want to throw it.

It does ruin the hole, there are several pretty holes on the course, that we all ruin by throwing hyzers.

Might you mean, "Jumbo Rocks" campground?

Quite the magical place...final resting ground of Gram Parsons. The bolders and Joshua trees are skewn to the North, called 'Wonderland of Rocks". That's considered Mojave desert. Southern area [e.g. Cottonwood Springs] is lower, 'Colorado' influence.
