I am glad to see Matt has his sense of humor, cause he won't after the tournament.
By the way Bill, is matt chasing checks or chicks. I always knew he was a little odd. But then again chasing checks may not be bad. Since he can't cash in the tournament, he will at least get something out of it. :D

Jul 20 2004, 03:54 PM
Well it was chicks, my Madison spelling is bad. That school sucked. But that was a funny post there Mr. Jim
Have I told you your GREAT today?

....looking forward to hanging with you guys on your home course, but you need to get your butts up to Round Rock to play another nice course...is Live Oak a good pull cart course? The first time I played there I shot a 16 over for 30 holes. how is that? please take into consideration its not my HOME course ........ ;) wow , I see how harsh you can get when your skeerd Billy...either way, I look forward to a close tourney with you 2......

Jul 20 2004, 05:12 PM
Just having fun Matt, It's all out of love bro.
Well 16 over in 30, I sure you can do better than that, You game has gotten better since then. Pull cart alot of people use them, it's a lillte ruff in the back, lost of rocks and hills, ( but thats only a few holes), a cart should be fine.Just bring WATER!!
I need to get to Round Rock. I have never played it :o
I have heard sooooo many good thing about that place and the people, just haven't made it out there yet.

Jul 20 2004, 06:25 PM

Jul 20 2004, 06:31 PM
hey Bill, how early are ya'll getting there? where are you going to park? oh, let Jimbob know I'm crashing with him, or I can just call him tonight.....I wish I lived next to a big course like that.....it would rule! I think I need to start representing my own club. WATERLOOOOO!

Jul 20 2004, 06:32 PM

baldguy
Jul 20 2004, 06:35 PM
hopefully it won't throw your "balance" off too much... but bring $10 to LOSO for one of these "motivational tools", and I'll give you some free tips on how to use online banking :D

Jul 20 2004, 06:38 PM
Friday I work intill 6:00 so soon after that.
Parking may become a deal out there this weekend, but either give Jimbob or me a call when you get close to town we will go from there. Jimbob's got my # . We can always meet at Jimmys and carpool from there it's about 5 blocks from the course. ( oh and it is nice being that close)

Waterlooooo in the house!! :D
You represent them well Matt!!!! :D

baldguy
Jul 20 2004, 06:42 PM
So, to add to the fun of this whole idea....
First person to guess what the "motivational tool" is gets a free one. But WAIT! there are conditions to this contest:

1.) You may only guess by PM to me. Any guesses posted in public forum will be completely ignored by myself and Mr. Duke.

2.) You cannot already know what it is, (duh!)

3.) The first person who guesses correctly (judged by PM date and time) will receive one free "motivational tool". If another person subsequently guesses corectly, but is more specific (by my judgement) they will also receive one free. Winnings to be paid out at the Saturday Player's meeting of LOSO. NOTE: you MUST be present at this year's LOSO to receive winnings. If you cannot be present, you cannot win :( but you can still buy one :)

4.) Once a correct guess has been made, I will notify the board. If the winner discloses the identity of the item, he or she will forfeit all winnings and be publicly flogged.

5.) anyone who already knows the identity of the "motivational tool" and discloses it in public forum (or in private) will also be publicly flogged. Remember... I know who you are

So... PM me your ideas and win a *@#^#$^ [Edited for content]

P.S. remember this is for fun and for a good charity. Please don't be an arse and spoil it for everyone :)

/bump

I have only had one guess so far...

Jul 20 2004, 06:45 PM
$10.00 for a "motivational tool" ( don't know if I spelt that one right either) I will take one Baldguy.
Q: can you eat or drink them?
Q: is it bigger than a shoe box? or shoebox ?

Thanks for the offer, but I dont like the online banking thing yet, still doing it the old school way.

Uh, I know (hand frantically raising in the air) "A picture of the leaderboard with Mark's name ahead of yours."

jk Mark, I was throwing money down on you with those odds at Waco.

LMAO Now thats funny I don't care who you are " thats funny" :D:D

baldguy
Jul 20 2004, 06:51 PM
Mr. Duke already addressed the issue of size, but it can be fit into a shoebox if necessary. It is not something you can put in an averaged-size pocket, but it can be used by just about anyone. Everyone attending LOSO should have one :)

Those are the only hints I will give. If you would ile to guess, please send me a PM. If you guess correctly, you will win a free one. Keep in mind that all proceeds from the sale of these items will go to the Chance Ware fund. It's not looking like I can get matching funds from my employer, but It will be at least $6 from each $10 item, straight to the boy's education.

Hi all,

Sorry I've been inundated with real life crap over the last several days. I hope you didn't think I was disappearing on ya. :)

Aaaaaaaaaanyway, players list should be up this afternoon and the titleDISC entries are rolling in hot and heavy over the last 2 days. Get yours in now before the cutoff (I think Thursday, but could be tomorrow, I'll check with Ben).

As for hotel deals, I'm hearing from folks that that $70 rate at the Topperwein LaQuinta is actually a pretty good deal compared to what else is out there for this weekend in that area. If you can do the Priceline thing, I'd recommend it.

More later, so as usual...STAY TUNED! :D

Hi all,

I'm still trying to drag the first batch of players info off my desktop, but I'm about to give up and manually type it in the laptop. I will I am working on it.

The meeting place will be the parking lot right next to what used to be hole #28 (I think), where the ZT10 was set up a couple of years ago. The City was unable to secure the pavillion for us this year for some reason.

We'll have tents set up there so its all good and you'll definitely see us.

Players meeting is 9 a.m. on Saturday and 1st round is slated to start at 9:30. All subsequent start times will be posted. Please check the board for round start times and to see whether or not there will be a players meeting on Sunday (only if we need it, but please check).

Gotta run, bbl.

That's right Mr Bender I am playing. Well I hope to anyway, with all these events going on everywhere people seem to want to make me work 20 hours a day. The next stupid question I get at midnight may be costly :D

Speaking of questions remember who the TD is this weekend...ask me a TD question and I will have you DQ'ed

I will be keeping a low profile this weekend and hoping to enjoy playing at Live Oak. I was out at the park last night and the course looked great. I got to witness a friend hit her only 2nd ever birdie so it was a fun time.

By the way I still have the LODGA #1 Bag Tag. Come and try to take it if you dare.

The one hole that caused my loss last year has been removed from the course. See I told you not to mess with the Aussies. ;)

Now back to watching Lance destroy the field.

Cyclops, due to a change in Ben's scheduling, online registrations at titleDISC had to be closed one day earlier than usual.

I do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, but not to worry. I'll be in the park until close to dark tomorrow and will be there around 6:30 Saturday morning.

For those who still want to sign up, and I know there's a bunch, you can see me Friday or please make it there as much before 8 a.m. as possible on Saturday morning.

What time would you like that wake up call Mark? Hang on I am playing so no need to wake up at 4am this Saturday :D

I look forward to seeing everyone out at Live Oak. The city again has done a great job preparing the course, the locals are ready and food is cooking (well done steak for me).

If you want to play...just do it. 2 days of fun disc golf at 2 great courses in 1 great park. We have a saying in Australia that goes like this..."Beautiful One Day, Perfect the Next".

Mark can we get a TV setup at HQ to watch Lance win on Sunday. If not I can not gaurantee I will be there.

I can't play doubles, so I won't see the new holes. Are they a secret? Is one of them that blind shot coming up the hill? Nelle, can you give a slight description of the holes, por favor.

Nelle 18131
Jul 23 2004, 12:42 PM
There are new holes in the back and really new holes in the front. The back ones you may have played as temp holes at the TX10 or Ice Bowl. There are four new ones in the back. After the long 23 going up the hill on the back side, you now go to the right and play a short holeA (230?), some people hyzer but I gut shoot it. Then there is another short tight holeB about 200-230, The there is a down hill ace run holeC playing down by the dentist office and the pool is on the right side. The there is hole D, this is a tough one, it is up the hill playing back up to 24. The basket is to the right and some people thumb it or try a huge annie, it is about 300. After that the course plays the same. The new holes in the back are nice, 6 plays from the right of 6's old short box and plays about 340 towards 8's tee box, with the baseball fields on the left (close). After hole 12 we will play the new, new ones. I have not played 11A but it looks okay. I have played 11B and bring your big arm out. Its a goof four for most of the guys. It is to the right from the tee box and is about 600 feet. Its really new back there so the fairway is a little tough and the crap on the sides can get you in real trouble. But other than those holes, Live Oak is the same. This is going to be so fun!!!!!!
LOSO IS THE PLACE TO BE!!!!

Yes the new 600 foot hole will cause some trouble for sure. Nothing like 2 blind anhyzer shots with crap on both sides of the fairway. Mark V shot a great 3 last night while I took a very safe (lucky) 4 but don't miss the line or you will pay. I can gaurantee you that Mark A will put in a short box for the Rec Men and Rec Women to where at least you can see the basket :D Also make sure you send a spotter on each card for both 1st and 2nd shots from the long box. This will be a backup hole if spotters are not used.

Also Mark just called and asked me to out the call out for 2 or 3 more baskets just to be safe. Get with Mark at the park tonight or just give them to him early tomorrow morning.

Back to work for me...can't wait to get to the best course in South Texas and play :D

Justin's drive was about 420', Chris's first drive (the one that counted) was about 400'. Then Chris grabbed a monster and threw a second drive about 20' further then Justin's. This was into a light to medium head wind folks! Only about 6 drives made it past 360'.

Jul 26 2004, 11:47 AM
Okay, where do I start? ;)

I think it would be appropriate to start with some special thanks to the folks who made this weekend work, and I ain't talking about the Right Rev. :)

Bill Van Halen Karshis - thanks for putting me up this weekend my friend. I had a room to myself to get work done in the evenings, a comfy bed and the good company of yourself and Randall. I appreciate it more than you know and would like to make my reservations now for LOSO III. :)

John Schmacktastic Conger - When you say you're coming to staff an event, I will always feel more comfortable knowing that you mean REALLY staff and work. Can't thank you enough for all your help this weekend, especially at the cost of at least some small amount of focus on your own game. I hope you had a great time and HCF events are always better when you're there.

Brian Beastmaster Schmidt - Live Oak is very fortunate to have you and so was I this weekend. Every time I turned around, you were asking what you could do to help, even sometimes waiting until the last moment to get out to the course to get ready for your own round. Your calm, in the midst of my storm, was invaluable. Thanks again.

Gary Deacon G Sweetness Duke - Your hands on help was greatly appreciated, as was the ongoing process of teaching me how to use the best **** tournament program ever written. Thank you for both. I may question your choice in t-shirt options, but never your dedication to disc golf or your friends.

Joe LOPAR Minella - If there's a city employee in an administrative position anywhere in America that does more hands on and behind the scenes for the sport of disc golf, tournaments and new players, I'd be surprised. I don't know what else to say. You're the best and LOSO wouldn't have happened without you. Period.

Chris Thunder Himing - With this event, as with any other I put on, your help and support before, during and after is something that I simply wouldn't continue to do this without. The sport of disc golf is fortunate that you've put your dedication to work in it, and I thank you.

To all the others who lent a hand, including but not limited to, Tony Bender, Billy Nelson, Vinnie Miller, The Coffeys, Danielle Vargas, The Live Oak Jaguars Youth Football Program, and any and all persons or groups I may have overlooked here, my heartfelt thanks go out to you.

Also, big props to the sponsors and the folks who donated great items for the HCF Raffle O' Wonder for this second incarnation of one of my favorite events of the year.

esalazar
Jul 27 2004, 09:08 AM
yeah , what were the details on the pdga membership?

Jul 27 2004, 09:44 AM
Well, the details on the free membership are quite simple. You see, it was to go to the "highest finishing" Am, without a membership. Simple, right?

So, Erron Salazar and Matt MacLane both "finished" high as winners of their respective divisions. Well that won't work, so we look at score. Erron's 225 beats out Matts 230. But, Erron shot from the shorts so that won't work either. So, who won their divisions by the most strokes.

Simple, yeah. Right. :)

By virtue of a slightly more commanding victory over his opponents, your new PDGA Member is Erron Salazar! WTG Erron. I'll fill out the paperwork and send it in with everything else and you'll get your stuff from the PDGA.

Efrain, now tell him to move up! (j/k)

ewwwwwwwww, but you did! As you know, traveling, and two-day events are not an option for the next few months. I'll consider myself lucky if i get to play the Carrollton Open, TX States, VPO, and the Tx10 Final. The 3 DFW events shouldn't be a problem. I've been staying on top of "the honey-do list" in hopes of making Tx States.

I think the DFW area needs a few HCF events.

Jul 27 2004, 11:53 AM
Alright, a few more LOSO related items.

Congrats to Justin Landers for winning the distance competition. I thought for a bit we might have a repeat of last year when it was won by an Intermediate player, when Jake Sisson's throw looked like it might hold up, but Mr. Landers put a Pro flavor on the competition. The early favorites Chris Ware, Robbie Bratten (last year's winner) and dark horse Jim Davidson just didn't seem to get off the kind of throws I know they were expecting. With the breeze and the use of the flatter football field, we all knew that Robbie's distance from last year was gonna be hard to match and no one came close to a throw that looked like that one or like C-dubs famous "Red Wildcat" throw. Still it was great fun and Mr. Landers walked away with an extra $100 for his efforts. Good job Justin!

And for those that weren't there, ask Mr. Ware to show you his new signed Red Wildcat sometime. :)

With the heat, the time of day, and the fact that we had just finished 4 pretty demanding rounds of golf in 2 days, the putting contest that I had tentatively planned, never materialized. I can say though, that after staring at that mini Ching that was in the raffle all weekend, I'm determined to get 9 of them for a mini golf competition next year. :)

I hope folks did notice the payout. $675 for 1st in a division of only 15 Pros at a B-tier was pretty decent. Also, for the Ams, not taking our percentage off the top and not taking out the $10 cost of the players packs from payout made for a nice return on Am entry fees as well.

I must say that I was a bit disappointed that we just missed a triple digit turnout for the second year in a row. Especially when I had so many locals come up over the 2 days of the event and tell me that they either forgot the tourney was this weekend or didn't know about it. Next year we'll hit those triple digits, even if I have to play. :D

Much fun was had at Hooligans on Saturday night, even if they did make me take off my tank top and buy one of their t-shirts to comply with the dress code. :) However, someone should tell a certain friend of ours that if you normally don't drink much, Long Island Iced Teas should not be your drink of choice when you do. ;)

Also, Kyle Grundman and I had lots of fun making fun of the live band. :)

I heard many mixed reviews of the infamous Island hole before, during and after the event. I would entertain comments here regarding that hole, but let me add my $.02 on the matter. I have played that hole in other events before and I love it! It takes a way too easy little 220' downhill hole and makes it a feature of the round. It requires more skill, in my opinion, than it does luck, but it is tough. I heard some folks say that it didn't seem fair that a round could be ruined by that one hole, but on what course and in what good tournament can that not be said about at least one hole?

On the self-critique side of things, I will admit that I was not as prepared for this event as I would've liked to have been. Real life for me has been a little wacky lately (not that this is news to anyone), but I felt bad that it didn't run a bit smoother than it did. Written course rules and maps should have been provided, and a better and larger selection of inventory should've been available. These things are my fault and will be corrected. Anyone who was affected by the stock levels regarding payout will be taken care of, I assure you.

All in all, it was again a great event (one of my favorites as a TD) and Live Oak continues to show why its a favorite venue for both TD's and players.

I deem LOSO II a success and I can't wait for next year. Thanks for coming out.

Of course DFW wants HCF events. Just be sure to ignore all of the local area disc golf events, and schedule it whenever you please. Seems to be the norm 'round here :o

Jul 27 2004, 12:01 PM
You know I wouldn't do that. ;)

I forgot to mention one more thing. We had 11 Ladies playing in the LOSO! Great turnout for the girls with 5 in Adv. and 6 in Rec.

Big thanks to Lady Nelle V for bringing more gals to the sport locally at LO and big props to the newer Rec girls who came out, competed and toughed it out for 4 hot and tough rounds of golf this weekend.

A special thumbs up to Deidre who played some really good golf on the tougher City Hall course on Saturday, to come from behind and put herself in a position to win, which she did. She was the only player in the division to shoot in the 70's in that round with a 74. Nicely done.

Great job by all the ladies. You go girls! :)

With poor sportsmanship always being pinned on the Pro ranks, it's good to see that there was at least one Advanced player this past weekend who must have been ready to move up.

The word from a couple of players on this persons card said that he threatened the group, cussed at the group, wanted to fight when someone told him to chill out, and treated his family who was walking with him the same way.

Don't know a name, only that he reportedly looked like Tim McGraw. Sounds like someone needs to tell this guy to chill out or stay home, I know of a couple of players who felt like their round was somewhat ruined. Luckily for them, he quit with 2 holes left to play in the tourney though.

That stuff just doesn't belong.

Jul 27 2004, 01:06 PM
Well based on that description and knowing how his round was going, I'm certain I know who we're talking about. I didn't know that was going on though. He still seemed in good spirits after the 3rd round and came over to me at lunch and was still smiling. Did this all happen during the 4th round, JD?

I would like to say to the folks who were having to deal with that, I've got your back. If something like that is brought to me at an event I TD, I WILL handle it.

In the future, let me know what's going on, guys, while I still have time to do something about it.

I figured you would've told them that, Jim. You're among a group of guys that I never worry about knowing what the right thing is or doing it. You're a credit to your division. :)

IMHO, we all knew about it beforehand, so anyone who really thinks it was unfair should not have played the tourny in the first place. This is coming from one (of many) who took a triple circle 8 on it, and one (of many) where not having the OB would have made a difference in the outcome. There is sometimes a big "luck factor" in this game we love and you have to take the bad with the good. How many of us had "lucky" shots that made big differences in a positive way? If you want to keep the good fortunes but take away the "bad possibilities".......then I suggest taking up a different hobby. Like tic-tac-toe. :D

Thanks Mark for what you do.

Jul 27 2004, 03:17 PM
Thank you, John, and it was good to see ya. You need to make it back out here to play sometime. :)

Regarding the Island Hole, I agree with what you posted.

Further, I just got off the phone with a guy who had pretty much been leading his division for the whole tournament until having to end on the Island Hole Sunday. He said he loved the hole, even though it may have cost him the win late in the tourney.

On the other hand, I talked with a friend during Sunday who had struggled on it, and he mentioned that some other mutual friends didn't come play the LOSO because of this hole (as John suggested above).

Its a hole that elicits many mixed reviews and opinions. As I mentioned upthread, I'd love to hear everyone's comments on it.

However, rest assured that the Island Hole on the Lake Course will remain a part of the LOSO tradition. :)

Took an 8 Saturday, due to badshots/frustration/fatigue/myowndamnfault. Deuced it Sunday. It cost me some strokes (that ended up mattering vs. the cash line), but I'm not going rail against it. It's a good tournament quality hole.

Jul 27 2004, 03:33 PM
I think that you need to work with the city to make a true island hole while they are reworking the lake. About 250' from an elevated tee onto a 40' island (20' radius around a basket) that slopes to the water on the back and left sides. After they play that a few times, they might stop complaining about an island where the discs are easily retrievable. ;)

Hell, I got an opinion (and yes it probably stinks)

I think the hole is way too punitive. Mark, you said something about every course having "round defining holes." Well, I've had a lot of important tee shots, but I've never played another hole like that one.

The second and most important whine about the hole is that it is too lucky. Put some haybales around the whole island and force people to land in the island. That would be a truer test of skill than trying to read a skip through a concrete ditch or hope you don't skip off the island. I will say however that the additional grass this year prevented many skips off the island and that was good.

If you make it a more difficult skill shot and take out the randomness, I would have less of a problem with the fact that a couple of feet in the wrong direction can ruin your weekend.

tbender
Jul 27 2004, 03:47 PM
What was so random?

Jul 27 2004, 03:47 PM
An excellent point, Mr. Duke. :)

And Mr. Bender, thanks for coming up with the hole's now permanent name, for the LOSO at least, "The Island of Doom." :)

I'd like to hear some more Pros chime in on the Island of Doom too (Vinnie, you're never short of an opinion :D). Especially if there were folks who might actually not play this event because of it.

Jul 27 2004, 03:58 PM
Wow, as I was typing a request for Pro opinions one was being typed at the same time. :)

Okay James, as for the punitive nature of the hole, I agree that it can and does offer brutal punishment for mistakes off the tee. Much more so than your average 220' downhill putter shot. But, that's the point.

As to your issue with the hole's randomness or the luck factor involved, I just can't get on board with that. Yes there is, like with any shot in Disc Golf, some luck involved and yes, on this hole its probably more than most. Or, at least it can be, both good and bad luck. However, you and I both know that there are better shot choices to play a hole like this (skipping off the concrete would not qualify as one of these IMHO) and that good players know how to throw them.

Now, if by "luck" you're referring to the fact that even good players, such as yourself, who have a wide selection of shots to choose from, including good choices for this type of hole, might not get off their best effort of one of these shots on this hole, then I don't know what to tell you. Even the best players throwing the correct shot don't nail it everytime. That's part of golf.

Am I misunderstanding your point?

vinnie
Jul 27 2004, 04:02 PM
LOL
James get over it! And yes it stinks much like the donkey you need to shut! :D
I like the hole, it makes you throw a skilled shot with emotional restraint.Be glad its not on a mound so that the roll factor comes into play. then there would be chance involved.

Jul 27 2004, 04:03 PM
I 2'd it and 4'd it this year. I'd like to see the left side expanded about 20 feet. This would give righty hyzers a larger landing zone, and lefty hyzers a larger skipping zone. When I 4'd it I skipped long (about 4 inches), so this solution wouldn't help me there, but it should eliminate some of the randomness.

seewhere
Jul 27 2004, 04:03 PM
I agree with James make it a TRUE Island hole like USDGC # 17!! :D

james_mccaine
Jul 27 2004, 04:08 PM
What was so random?

The randomness is the skip/slide (mainly skip) nature of almost every shot I saw. It is just my belief, but I do not believe most players know exactly where, or how far their throw will skip. The exact direction/length of skip depends on whether you hit dirt, grass, a concave concrete surface sloping down, a concrete sloping surface sloping up, or a concave concrete surface with concrete blocks sticking up. I don't think anyone can honestly disagree that all those factors determine the ultimate outcome. I also don't think anyone can say that they aimed for that six inch dirt spot rather than the neighboring grass, or the upward slope of the concrete rather than the downward slope. Sure that stuff exists on every disc golf hole, but rarely is it so important.

Another indication of randomness is the fact that 3/4 of the way to the hole, you have no clue if they will stick or not. Everyone watching is just waiting to witness the nature of the skip. Kind of like a more predictable roulette wheel.

Put haybales around it and the randomness would be greatly diminished. If you can throw it into that area, you are good, if not try again.

Jul 27 2004, 04:10 PM
Wow, ask for Pro opinions and ye shall receive. :)

As for the haybales, no way. That would make it too easy. "Let's put something around the hard hole to catch our discs before they go O.B." What? Besides, if I'm correct, the USDGC #17 is longer and a bit tougher of a shot, yes?

And Vinnie:

...a skilled shot with emotional restraint.

That may have been one of the most insightful and well worded things I've ever read you post. Beautiful description, IMO, of what it takes to play this hole. Nicely done. :)

Another 20' to the left does nothing for a lefty, unless you're throwing sidearm. The trees get in the way of any LHBH hyzer in that direction. The extra room gives more to the righties who throw slightly off-line spikes and big sweeping hyzers. As a lefty, I was throwing flat at the string and letting the spin take it right. I don't need a skipping zone, I need an uphill slope on the right... :)

I'm not sure about that James. Everyone would then throw putters/midranges straight at the basket knowing that they can't slide off the back (like many people did last year with that lightning quick green). It would also see alot more overhand shots using the bales to stop the rolls, bounces, and skips. I'd think more people would be saved by the bales than would fear them.

Jul 27 2004, 04:34 PM
I think the island hole is great. If a Rec can birdie it twice, I don't see what the Pros can be complaining about. I play it the same if it is an island hole or not. A lot of courses have a hole that they are known for and that distinguishes that tournament or that course. It just adds a little extra something special. There can be some luck in how far you skip or roll but that can happen on any hole almost. The results on your scorecard may not be affected as much. I think there is still some skill and mental toughness involved. I certainly can't understand one hole keeping anyone from coming to a great course and a great tournament. Have a great day and see you on the course.

a lefty on my card parked it using a very low, sweeping hyzer skip shot. he followed the line of the hill downward, never getting high off the ground. and he was a local boy (sup reuben) so I'm betting this wasn't an accident. He managed to park it, but another lefty on that hole might have misjudged the skip a bit, and the extra 20' to the left would have made a huge difference. I know that an extra 1 foot on the left would have saved me at least 5 strokes this weekend. Also, I second the "luck factor" notion. it does take a skilled shot, but it does require too much luck. IMO, every tee shot (5 total) that I threw at this hole was a good shot. On Saturday, I floated 3 putters down there, the first 2 of which were less than a disc-length OB. one was short, the other slid through. Sunday the wind begged me to throw a Roc, and I did... the first one an inch or two out, the second one an inch or two in. since the yellow rope was all faded by that time, it looked fine from the teepad, but upon investigation I had to throw the second.

I think that haybales are a good idea, b/c it stops the skip-in as much as the skip-out. plus, it forces a higher flightpath to enter the landing zone. maybe stack 2 bales high on the entering sides, and have only one bale on the exit sides of the island... i dunno. but something should be done to remove some of the luck factor.

regardless, great tourney. a good reminder of why i should stay in MA2 instead of moving up :D

For what its worth, I agree with Brian that the left side should be a little wider, although I was thinking 10' to 15', rather than 20', when I was considering the same thing last night.

Also, I have to agree with TB that the bales would lessen the fear factor for more throwers, as well as change the shot.

However, its worth pointing out that making me laugh out loud like a crazy person has the effect of enhancing my opinion of a person. Thanks for the Walt Whitman comment, James. :)

Try playing the USDGC Hole #17 and tell me if the hay bales takes the fear away. Not a chance. I do believe that hay bales would help the problem of people skipping on loose rocks etc in Live Oak. The USDGC hole also has water all down the left side of the fairway and left of the island. A small tree is also placed perfectly to stop the low hyzer.

Holes that test the mind as well as the throw are not bad things just in the right situations. Take away the "island" and watch everyone birdie the hole. At least on an island hole you can see the basket. :D

All I know is that this great hole (yeah, I had a 2 and a circle-4) is much more forgiving than the Island (errr...pennisula) hole at The Beast in Waco (#6).

During the Waco Charity Open - AM event last month, there was not a drop zone, and there was not a limit to the number of drives you could throw into the pond. Oh, and did I mention there was a pond? So any disc you threw OB, was lost to you for at least the rest of the round. One guy on our card threw 4 discs into the water before finally hitting dry land.

By comparison, #4 at the Lake Course in Live Oak is a piece of cake. Or it can eat your cake. I think it's a great 'signature' type hole for this course, and am always glad to see it set up as such.

The USDGC hole also has water all down the left side of the fairway and left of the island. A small tree is also placed perfectly to stop the low hyzer.

This is the point I was making earlier, mate. #17 at Rock Hill is tougher and a different type of hole.

If you're shooting "down" into protective haybales at Lake Course #4, its a different story. As for the loose rocks, they weren't really a problem this year from what I've heard. (See everybody, Chris and I do disagree sometimes. :D)

I agree with Rooster that the Island of Doom is kind of a signature tournament hole for Live Oak events that use it and that's why I'd like to keep it an annual thing for LOSO.

However, I'm getting good info from all the input, thanks.

I can agree with you on one more thing Mark, in that Girlie is busy getting that skirt ready for you to wear at Worlds. I am just glad you are sharing a room with someone else. We can't have any cross dressers in the other rooms.

As I said before Island Hole's and roped holes are fine but should not be done for the sake of it. Maybe we could have the Live Oak City put a cement line on the left of the island permantly?

I don't mind islands...I grew up on one

As for me, all it takes is a Supersoft released with a little hyzer and aimed at the #5 basket and then just let it float on in. On the island everytime. No luck, just skill.

Now as for the rest of the tourney for me...well we just won't go there. :(

Entry fees have nothing to do with it. Are you catagorizing yourself as a whiny pro :D Because I wasn't.

As a former 5A high school tennis coach, I had to pay different fees for students to play different levels. The venue's for the different levels of play almost always had different conditions to them. The player had to adjust to those conditions to play well to win. Tennis courts are suppose to be uniform in standards, but there are always variances that come into play, such as space beyond the court, the taughtness of the net, the actual playing surface..etc etc.etc. If a high school, athlete can adjust to differing conditions in their sport then I think a pro athlete can adjust to the conditions of theirs.

It doesn't mean that you will be able to do it everytime, but it is the stipulated course and you play it.

If you want to come closer to #17 at the USDGC, put hay bales along the edge of the concrete, and leave the left side open.

There is a tough hole. It requires a certain type of tough shot, and if I may (with credit to Vinnie) emotional restraint. Those players who recognize this tough shot and throw it correctly are rewarded with a very high percentage birdie. Those who may recognize the shot required but don't get off their best effort on that particular throw for one reason or another, are punished.

That ain't luck, that's golf!

:D

I agree, I probably played worse than anybody out there and I was able to land it on my first throw. If you're really a pro you should have easily birdied that hole. There was a 13 year old kid out there who also landed it on his first throw and he barely had enough of an arm to throw that far. If you're a pro and still want to whine about it then I say its too bad you cant move back to Am.

I'd also like to say that I have found a disc that may belong to a Jim Davidson, I cant really read the name or PDGA number but that was the closest match. Jim let me know if you're missing anything. :D

Good tournament Mark. I appreciate the drink cart helping me survive the heat all weekend.
I love how Pros are labeled as whiners AFTER Mark has asked for their opinions. I think the island is a fine hole, I think James idea would be fun also. James are you volunteering to buy the hay bails, place them along the island and then retrieve them after the tournament? You probably would but my point is that a string is much simpler and offers close to the same effect.
I don't think I ever think about my entry fee while playing in a tournament. What can make a hole like the island hard in the open division is knowing that a high percentage of the competition will land it. Another reason why Winthrop #17 is such a mind #$%^. By the way I took a 2 and a 6 on it. Every shot counts just some more than others. Mark, I would love to see the scores on that hole over the weekend.
Congrates Smokin' on the nice putt through the limbs to win it and to Vinnie for putting the heat on him. Good playing guys. And Jim Davidson should be nominated for the sportsman of the year award in my opinion. He never goes negative during a round. Great job setting an example. I should shut my donkey now.

Thanks Emmadad, I appreciate your input.

And for the record, I (for once) was not calling the Pros whiny. :)

I will post average scores on the hole tomorrow. I think that's something we all would like to see. A 2 and a 6? There's some diversity for y'all. :)

And as for your take on Mr. Davidson, whenever I'm about to throw a tantrum on the course, I often wish I was more like him. Good call.

Players pack? I got no players pack. Also Mark you have Steven's pdga # listed for me I'm 21772. Although I would gladly let him have the ratings I shot !

You goobers...*shakes head*

Yes, players pack. Not a physical players pack but $10 good toward plastic or to be added to your payout. I know you guys knew that.

Dale, I have made the number correction on the results page of the tourney program and it will be reported correctly. The only way to change it (that I know of) on the tournament results page online though is to overwrite all the results and input them again. I'll do that, but it'll be in a bit. Fixing it on my end and making sure it got reported correctly was easy. ;)

Are you through with us OMBs, NineLives? Am I gonna have to get good enough to go to Pro Masters to try to beat you? :)

I appreciate that Shannon and Mark, although It would have been a lot nicer to be in the "gracious winner" category. :)

Cyclops, I actually left two blue Z-Wildcats on the tailgate of my cousins truck during awards, they were gone when I came back. I suspect someone was throwing them out in the nearby field..... Is it a clear blue or a darker opaque blue?
