Come play the mini today. Pease will be 18 holes now. I'll
finish marking the tee posts this morning before we tee off. I hope everyone enjoys it. We will miss throwing from the street on #8 and #9. The upside is....we will make strides in improving our relationship with the city. They would we be happy that we are not traveling up and down and we have eliminated some of the worst hazards to pedestrians.

From Moody...

Come to celebrate Eyores Birthday Party in Austin's Pease Park on April 30th. Austin has had this great festival for over 40 years now! In the past some of our mini-tournment players have walked down to enjoy all that Eyores offers after finishing their morning round. Kevin Roberts, the original designer of Austin Discourse used to hold a tournament at this same time. In that spirit we will have the regular mini on that Saturday with some fun additions. Probably some temps holes since we shut down the hill(a,b,c) for Eyores, CTP's, raffle, and complimentary beverages. Someone please contact me if you want to cook breakfast tacos before tee off. Subject to interest we will raffle an entry or two for the upcoming Captial of Texas Open! More news....as we make it up . :D

From Dave Moody

All amateur divisions are invited to join us at Pease on Mondays for a FUN round of random doubles. $5.00 per player paid out in discs. This will start June 27th and continue through July. As long as folks are having fun with it, it will continue. Tee off at 5:30pm

Is it just a single division? Or separated by Pro/Am?

Jun 27 2005, 03:58 PM

It starts today.

It's amateurs only. Dave said it would probably be by division. All the advanced, intermediates and recs in separate doubles divisions.

Is two minis a week at Pease not enough? We were very careful at Twin Parks not to schedule a mini on the same day as any other local courses. That being said, any pros (or anyone else for that matter) who want to play on Mondays, come out to the club. Tee off at 6:30. We now have all the solar lights in on the bottom course, and the pool table was delivered today. We will also begin hosting poker games immediatly following our Monday minis. Good luck, Dave, we hope to see you out here whenever you can free up some time.

Honestly, I don't think a mini at Dripping Springs really conflicts with a mini at Pease; or a mini at Round Rock conflicts with the mini at Bart. However, all these minis conflict with people that have 7:30 - 5:30 jobs. :p

Just curtousy. Nobody's offended here, and no offense was intended towards Dave, Pease, or anyone affiliated with it. We're not asking anyone to change their dates. I love Pease Park, and Dave's always been cool with me, and supportive of the club. It just seems that if too many minis start to overlap, it hurts both courses' numbers.

I didn't take any offense to that statement nor do I feel there is any conflict of minis. Truth of the matter is you can hold a mini whenever you want. TPCC could of done this a long time ago, maybe you did and I didn't hear about it. Efrain is right "lots of options". It kinda came off as whinning about minis to me and still reads that way when I read it over again. I'm not trying to bust chops here, but why say that?

We have been doing these mini's on Monday nights since April 7th when there was nothing else on Monday nights.

Too many options are not always a good thing. Just look at all the tournaments this year and the lower turnouts. (Don't turn this thread into that argument :D)

Hey Dave, could you bring my P.A. system to the park with you sometime soon (week or so)? I'll have my drummer in Austin come pick it up.

I'm playing in a band again, and we'll be playing weekend dates and dives in ATX pretty soon. Southern Rock mostly cover band called Vagabond. Nothing serious (those days are waaaaay behind me) but we'll be good and have a lot of fun.

Let me know what day you can bring it with ya and I'll have him swing by and get it.

I'll also let you guys know when and where you can come check us out.

Thanks, Mark

I will have to find a way to get them to ya.

I'm finally back on the thread. Come on out to today's Tuesday mini at Pease. It should be Peaseful :). Last week Mike Olse shot a 46, Suda 47, and Joel 48. Not too shabby. Everyone that would like to hear Mark's new band in Red Rock for the Octoberfest weigh in on the Octoberfest thread. Nothin' like Southern Rock in the country.

Aug 31 2005, 10:57 AM
Bill, I don't think and VH would fit into what we're doing. I've done the original recording artist thing, the metal cover band thing, the country thing, hell, even the acoustic folk thing.

Now, I'm gonna have some good-timin' fun and we have assembled some true southern redneck rocker types (one of which is an Aussie, if you can believe that) and that's the only kind of music we'll be doing. Played our first little practice 5-song set at a little club in Austin on Friday and after only two rehearsals, sounded really good. But alas, No VH.

Dave, 'preciate the invite. I'll talk to the boys and we'll see what we can work out.

Later.

Oh yeah...Play October Fest!

Aug 31 2005, 11:55 AM
So maybe a little Molly Hatchet is in order for the band? "I'm travelin' down the road and I'm flirtin' with disaster...." Ah, I can hear it now

Aug 31 2005, 01:10 PM
Hatchet, Outlaws, Blackfoot, Skynyrd, ABB (my personal fave) ZZ Top, ARS, Little Feat. etc.....

You get the picture. :)

"Whiskey Man doncha play that hand too long..." :)

Gotta go and take down a dirty City Hall in the area, be back. Y'all have fun now, ya hear? :)

Sep 06 2005, 11:48 AM
Come on out. Ace pot is still $250.00 Tee at 5:30pm. We will begin to take disc donations for the Octoberfest raffle and silent auction as well as entries for the tournament.

Ok players. Here is our chance to raise some funds for the rebuilding efforts for the entire Gulf Coast area damaged by Hurricane Katrina. We will donate all funds raised directly to the Habitat for Humanity's Gulf Coast Region. We will raise money through donations, a raffle, silent auction, and $1.00 of each entry fee at the Octoberfest. You can help in our effort by donating discs and other items to the raffle and silent auction. Please know that your participation in this effort is valualbe as organizations like Habitat for Humanity begin the rebuilding process in the Gulf Coast area. it was very one sided. I went to a meeting with Gordon a while back and they were very interested in spending a ton of money to put in more ball fields at Walnut Creek park. I just find it funny that they were talking to us about all the money they are spending at that park for other sports but they wouldn't put aside anything for us to even get parking up there. Also it was a huge deal for us to even discuss getting the money together for the parks department to put the ecco-creado teepads in at Pease. We left the meeting with them saying they would try one pad out. Now we have an entire walkway and still no pad.

scoop
Apr 05 2006, 10:52 AM
That was an interesting and informative article.

First of all: Gordo --- thanks for being such a great spokesperson and steward of our sport.

Secondly --- and this is going to sound like sacralige to some --- but I would be in favor of closing the Pease Park disc golf course (as well as eliminating the leash-free dog park zone) to allow the park to recover.

Pease is a seriously distressed park.

In the article Gordo states that, "There's just not enough places in the city of Austin for disc golfers to go play." --- Well...sort of. In the actual city itself, that's a true statement. But within the general Austin area, there are numerous places to play disc golf. You just can't ride your bike from the UT dorms to all of them.

In fact, I mapped and counted all of the disc golf courses in our general area, and there are 22 disc golf courses within a 31.6 mile radius of Austin, with 16 of those courses within a 20 mile radius.

http://static.flickr.com/36/123729278_d20826f44e_o.jpg

Perhaps the answer to saving Pease Park is to cease playing disc golf there (at least on a permanent basis). And then re-educate the hordes of casual and rec players as to the location of all the other courses.

Yes, we could always use more courses. But a better answer is to spread the play around to the courses that we already have, too.

I could see Pease becoming like Waterloo Park, where we get special permission to set the old course back up for COTO once a year.

LouMoreno
Apr 05 2006, 11:50 AM
There are a lot of measures that can be taken before that, Robbie. There's no need to go to the extreme suggested in the article. You'll notice that Nokes wants to use Pease as the testing ground for several methods of regrowth. That just doesn't make sense to me. Why take one of the most utilized parks in town and close it long term for testing. That should be done elsewhere and once the best method is determined, then the issues at Pease can begin to be addressed.

james_mccaine

These goddamn tree hugging whackos are gonna make a republican out of me!!!!!!!!!

Why in their concern over preservation do they ignore the 99% of the land that has been dramitically damaged (a driveway, a house, new plant species, dog crap running into the watershed), yet they #$*&$! and moan about the freaking small piece left for people to enjoy??????????

Damnit, a freaking soccer field doesn't support native flora, neither does a basketball court, swimming pool, or rec center. Why doesn't that idiot go after those things.

And don't get me started with erosion. shaol creek has been eroding for eons. In our little blip here in Austin, it has been primarily exacerbated by upstream development, not the freaking bald spots we see at our tee boxes, or our pathways.

Basically, these "environmentalists" have absolutely no perspective. The concept that a park is to be used for enjoyment is foreign to them, probably because the only enjoyment they understand is to view the unspoiled natural landscape.

Why don't they go over to house park and demand that the complex be destroyed and returned to nature? It would restore far more degradation than eleminating disc golf. Orders of magnitude more. Why not????

ps. This is an example on why I can't talk to the press. :p

Nice job Gordo, I really liked the not-so-small-point about how much enjoyment has come from the use of the park. That never seems to factor into their equation.

I say pull all the courses in Austin and move them up North.... you can't run a tournament in Austin anyways. We know how to handle hordes of people, trash and tree huggers.
Then them low life punk golfers who abuse course will know what they had.Kinda like taking a video game away from you kid.OR
PAY TO PLAY!

Vinnie --- you forgot the Pease Park favorite --- walking the guantlet of meth-heads who live under the bridge at Pease Park.
_______

Anybody who knows me knows I'm no tree-hugger (though, I'd rather hug a tree than hug a hippee ) --- but I do believe that Pease Park is in trouble. And that the rate of degradation at Pease has accelerated at an alarming pace, and much quicker than at other city parks.

Perhaps a compromise for Pease would be to let reduce the course to two 9-hole courses, like Zilker, and rotate them throughout the year, or to simply close the course for 5-6 months of the year to allow time for recovery?

I don't believe we can continue to use and abuse this particular park at the rate that we currently do and expect it to stay as enjoyable as it is.

james_mccaine
Apr 05 2006, 02:32 PM
What again is this "degradation" at Pease? Bald spots? Loss of indigenous flora? or is it just an eyesore to someone expecting to see wilderness?

Also, in the Shoal Creek watershed, are there other spots where the soil is trampled, where native species won't grow, where the soil does not absorb as much rainfall as it once did? Of course there are. Almost the entire watershed is that way. Why is that? Oh yeah, people inhabit the watershed, they build driveways, and homes, and plant non-native grasses, the let their dogs crap in their yards, they let motor oil flow into the sewers.

Not interested in taking back private land, well, let's remove all the ball fields from the watershed, the pools, the walking paths, the grassy areas of Pease, the volleyball and basketball courts. I have yet to see any native species there.

Why is it always the disc golf course? I'm tired of us having to always defend ourselves on this subject, while soccer players, basketballers, tennis players, ball golfers, swimmers, walkers always get a free pass.

If these environmentalists weren't hypocrites, or simply opportunists going after easy prey, then the debate would rightly be about the need for preservation versus public use. The need for native species versus the need of its human inhabitants to have recreation and enjoyment. That council meeting would be really interesting.

I am dragging you to that meeting and signing you up to speak. :)

I agree with you on a lot of this. Anyone that plays regularly at Pease can see the damage done after a one inch rain is much worse than the wear caused by use. A good example of this is the bank across the creek from hole 4. Before it was walled up by the city, it was eroded to the point that it took half of the hike & bike trail at some places. Nobody was putting wear and tear on the bank. It was just a case of too much runoff.

easyE
Apr 05 2006, 04:35 PM
I agree with you as well. Look at the effort put in to rebuilding Bart. If the city put any kind of effort to build the creekbed up like they did at Bart or even along hole 4 at pease it would help with the errosion. It isn't the disc golfers that are tearing the sides down but the massive amounts of water that tear through there during the rains. The rest of the area I do agree should be shut down for a bit to give it a chance to regrow. I do think that there will be no possible way that the city could shut it down completely but at least pull the baskets out for a couple of months. We as a disc golf community take care of the place. The other turd chunkers and drunk UT students are the ones destroying it. The city has their mind set about us. I get the feeling like when I was a kid asking for a skatepark to be built. For a city that has such a high amount of disc golfers and a high amount of support for the community they sure know how to keep a hippie down.

The thing that really irked me about the article was the drastic decrease in park funding and maintenance was treated like a natural phenomenon, like rain oh, gosh, the budget got slashed year after year, whoopsie daisy well just have to make due with volunteers or something... Increasing funding from the city wasnt mentioned as an option.

Maybe Im hypersensitive, but seems like the average reader would come away from that article with the message disc golfers hurt parks rather than city parks drastically under funded. I think its the primacy defeating the recency (and many people may have read only the last half.

The headline should have been Budget cuts and increased use killing Pease Park or something.

As much as my inner hippie (ew) is sensitive to the overuse issue, it would suck to lose that course b/c it's really the only one I can make it to during the week...

i've played pease park for the past two years...everyday. I think Easy has a point with the Bart-issue....erosion has been the biggest factor...the course doesn't even get use until 11ish...at least during the school season....Shoal creek should be maintained...the packed issue....rain too. Me and my 37 disc bag walking that great park daily is not the problem....sweet old mother nature....is just licking the life from it.......there's my two cents! :(

Artical about Pease Park (http://www.statesman.com/life/content/life/stories/health/04/3fitcity.html)

An interesting read, I hope they come up with a plan that involves Disc Golf.

For anyone that missed the editorial in Monday's paper. The Statesman thinks it's a good idea to pull the disc golf course.

Sorry to read that. Nothing like playing disc at Pease while girl watching......

Apr 12 2006, 01:32 PM
yeah, was trying to find that online the other day to post, thanks lou.
read that the day it was in the paper, bunch of MFBS if you ask me. All of the sudden the disc golfers are these evil entities "destroying" the park, yeah the thousands of people walking through there everyday NOT playing disc golf don't contribute to any of that. Pease is on a flood plane, so areas near the creek are going to look trampled because after a big rain nothing is left but dirt. Look at a part of the park with water doesn't generally overflow, like 15 and 16 fairways across the creek, plenty of grass there, and golfers walk those fairways just as often as the rest of the course.
whatever.

You have to remember that these are people that don't have daily contact with the park that are making these claims. If they'd like Pease to be revitalized, they should push the PARD to aerate and seed like they do at Zilker. There are more effective options than just closing the park to users.

I really hope they don't close the park before COTO !!! :(

We could always do COTO on the disc golf side of town.

Am sending this to the statesman...we'll see if they print it.

-----------------------------------

Pease give me a break.

A recent editorial (You cant Pease everyone) called for removing the disc golf course in Pease park. This is ridiculous. Does the course interfere with grass growth and contribute (minutely) to erosion? Of course it does. This is because the disc golf course is a facility , just like a soccer field or tennis court.
There are two key features that separate the disc golf course from other facilities, however. First, it is much less obtrusive. When was the last time you saw a beautiful oak tree in the middle of a tennis court?
Second, the Pease disc golf course is actively maintained by the volunteer efforts of the Waterloo disc golf club. Do the soccer players themselves mow the city soccer fields? No, the city the taxpayer does.
Rather than responding to arguments that the Pease disc golf course be removed, we should be demanding that the city maintain the course as they do other recreational facilities. But we dont. We maintain the course voluntarily so that we, and others, can enjoy it. If youre not going to thank us, at least leave us alone.

The City of Austin has no plans to pull the disc golf course at Pease Park. PARD is looking into the possibility of adding more courses in other parks in order to alleviate the heavy traffic at Pease.

There is a letter to the editor in today's Statesman from Jill Nokes, the horticulturist quoted in the original article from 4/6. She said it makes no sense to single out disc golfers from other park users as the cause of the problems at Pease. I couldn't find it online or I'd give y'all a link.

Well then, I guess I should apologize for all those nasty things I said about Ms. Nokes. :D

Oh yeah, clean up your name there buddy, you're squishing the thread. ;)

Sounds funny coming from a Garfieldonian:). I'm glad all the chatter about Pease was just that... PARD re-upped my permit again and they assurred me that all is good. I dropped new sleeves to Mike yesterday. The mini will go on Sat am, be early, Eyores is in the afternoon. If you want to help Mike with the sleeves please play the mini and then hang around to help.

Apr 23 2006, 03:39 PM
Eyores is next week. Opps... Get down to the mini and then do the Eyores.

Jul 17 2006, 09:33 PM
Tuesday mini tees at 5:30pm. I'll be there for a change. Been bustin' my #$*&$! with the other job trying to keep the shop alive. I will be picking up some new stock tommorow before the mini. Call me if you have a special order and leave a detailed message(disc, color, weight) 914 4039 I-magine I'll have cold one tommorow evening and will try to have one for you. It's been nice sitting in the box while Mike's been in Shreveport. I even played a round yesterday...look out. Pease out

Another reminder...there is still over $250 in ace pot tonight! We had 21 Advanced on Saturday, thank you.

Actually, I learned a couple of weekends ago that the start time is really 10:30, not 10:00. I used to attribute my perceived delay to the Austin slacker ethic, but now I realize they are prompt. ;)

Do you baggers play open! :o:eek: :D :p

But of course! It's the only way this bagger gets any better :D

Honestly, there's always solid talent at every Pease Mini....Open and Advanced. The mini consistantly draws 20-40 players, especially on a nice Saturday morning.

Cfles....why all the questions?...are you coming down to Austin sometime soon? Let me know - in addition to the Pease mini, the WilCo course just opened....I know you FW Boys like concrete and this course has it!

Jul 21 2006, 01:25 PM
errrr....oops. I was told by two different people that they were laying concrete and over seeding the fairways to help get rid of the mud when it rains. I'm assuming I was given bogus info....oh well, I'm going this afternoon to check it out. Are there any plans to get concrete out there?

I don't know about Tuesday, since weekday minis are for deadbeats and dell employees, but Saturday minis are at 10:30. Like Chris, I used to think it was 10:00 and always figured those slackers were slow getting things rolling. They're not, the real time is 10:30.

Ric Johnson just passed on the word that because of the time change, the Tuesday Pease Minis will now start at 4 pm.
