Final Doubles Format

I appreciate the new input and ideas about the Doubles format. We have added already the MPR for the 950+ players, but we don't want to change the MPH as was proposed originally for the <950 players, many of whom signed up subsequent to that announcement. My gut feeling is that the top ten cashing teams will come from a wide cross section of the field and the final scoring spread will be fairly close. In other words, the teams that play best within the format are going to do the best. I admit we could be totally wrong, but we would rather err on the side of the lower rated players in this case as a lower rated team sweep is unlikely in any case, but a high rated team sweep could happen if we went the other way. Thanks again to all those who are willing to try this experiment in pro am doubles where everyone gets to play in the same division. It's either gonna be great or a bust...either way we will be setting a baseline for events like this in the future.

We have decided do stick with the format as last posted:

MPR = Mulligans Per Round
MPH = Mulligans Per Hole

1000 and above = 1 MPR
975-999 = 2 MPR
966-974 = 3 MPR
950-965 = 4 MPR
----------------------
900-949 = 1 MPH
899 & less = 2 MPH

Still all one division. General Mulligan rules apply as per previous post #123.
See post #123 for more details.

Movin' on!

An alternative to the wonderful accomodations provided by the host hotels, is our very own and better kept secret, the huntsville atate park, located just ten minutes from the course with camping sites, screened in shelters at thirty dollars a night, hot shower facilities, and world class bass fishing, lots of ten and twelve pounders pulled out of here, camp store for basics etc. At last check, 2/14/11 there were 15 screened in shelters available. Great option for those who wish to go moderately rustic. Local phone for the park is 936-295-5644. They will answer all your questions and then redirect you to the toll free number for state park reservations.

Had the honor of playing the course with both Steve and Neal this Sunday. First time there and planning on seeing some odd course by the testament of others. I was pleasantly surprised. The Tee boxes and signs are some of the best I have ever played on and sure there were a few holes that made me wonder but the overall course is a good course. The coordinators of the event have planned for some minor adjustments to the course that I think will make for a great experience and the player amenities will be very enjoyable.<O:p</O:p
I can assure the folks coming for the first time will have a great time and like me will leave wondering why there was so much criticism.<O:p</O:p
I look forward to the event and seeing everyone <O:p</O:p

I went two weeks ago and like Vinnie I was pleasantly surprised. First off if you don't get the whole "prison theme" you will once you hit town. The whole place is either about Sam Houston or the prison. It is a nice town in a beautifully wooded area of Texas.

The course itself is tucked away in a nice area and is very well maintained. The signs are simply awesome and I wonder how many people will walk away "borrowing" that idea. The pads and paths between holes are very nice. They even have a "train" that runs down one sides ob line (manicured bushes and I mean a bunch of em). You can tell that the DuFranes have put a lot of time and $ and love into the place. ALL of the family members I met were very excited to have us out... very hospitable. I like Vinnie was totally shocked due to the fact what I was reading here was nothing like I was experiencing there.

The Holiday Inn is the nicer of the two hotels offered but their wireless was down the entire 3 days I was there. The best Western was in a massive remodel. Might be better by then. Both places were located by food, shopping etc. If your planning on bringing the young'ns do it... Huntsville is a mini history lesson of sorts.

One thing I really noticed is that unlike most "private" disc golf facilities the Dufranes are not trying to make it something it is not.

Overall I am sure Tim is looking down on us smiling. He wanted a travelling event and this stop so far seems to one he would enjoy. Tim loved fun and disc golf and I am pretty sure there is going to be a bunch of that here pretty soon in his honor. So grab you a Dodger cap and a couple of sweet rocs and head on down to Huntsville. You won't be let down.

I will post some pics on my facebook for you to check out.

While I don't live terribly far away I've only been able to play this course a couple times a year. It is one of my favorites out of well over 100 courses played.
Any negative comments explode in magnitude when considering the time, blood, sweat & tears that have gone into the course.
Looking forward to seeing what new changes are in store and playing the added holes when installed for the tournament.

I know this was already answered but adding a few pipes with netting would also help out a lot. They have this at Spring Valley where people just use the golf nets to warm up their drives.

Add in 3-4 baskets to putt at and a moderate sized piece of land and you have a good setup.

After your round on Saturday plan on sticking around the course for awhile. We’ll be serving up some vittles (included in your entry fee) starting about 3:00pm, and keep it serving until everyone has finished their round. And after the last card is in, around dusk, The Shady Rest Band will crank up and be tossing their bluesgrassy sounds through the big pines. We’ll be enjoying some Southern Star brew, throwing a putting contest, and playing some night golf. Ask Dolla Bill about a special gift for all designated drivers. Weather? What weather? We have the warehouse and the PDGA Big Top tent so plenty of indoor space if necessary. If you are not a staff member, sponsor, or player and would like to have dinner with us contact Neal Dambra ndambraATcomcast.net by April 1.

GENERAL DIVISIONAL SCHEDULE
All divisions play 27-27-21 except 23-27-21 for:
Senior Legends (75+), Legends (70+), Advanced Senior Grandmasters (60+), and Am Women.
All players in those divisions will get a daily Rating relative to the rest of the field as the 23 contiguous holes all players will play will be rated separately from the entire 27 hole set. So when you see a 23 hole total requested on your scorecard you know why. This has been approved by the PDGA.

Will the caddy book be available at the tournament or do we have to print it if we want to carry one?

If the latter is the answer...

Can you format it so that it will print as a book and not be so large?

I remember several years ago HFDS did a caddy book for TEXAS States. It has been awhile since I have played States so you might still be doing it. Can something like that be put together for the US Masters?

Looks like I broke my wrist last Tuesday doing some gardening around the casa. :-(

Anyone up for a little opposite-hand challenge for the TS US Masters?

I've got a removable hard-cast on my right wrist right now, but it isn't too likely I'll be able to throw with my right hand in time. Oh well...the gig is already paid for and all planned out so I'll be playing regardless. It's all about having fun anyway so I can't ask for a better group of folks to hang out with for the weekend.

I don't anticipate that having a broken wrist is gonna hinder my poker-playin'. :-)

anyways the shawshank caters to placement over big arm drives. there will be a couple of holes added next to the course out in the open you will like most. but for the most part, if you can stand and deliver a midrange or fairway driver off the teepad and hit your line, you will do best. most of the tee shots have trees to deal with down the fairway and there is a wind factor there. not like vegas but still something you need to consider. some of the fairways are crazy tight and narrow, like i was telling you about hole 4 where you need a cut roller. a big hyzer bomb will work there too. so basically if you can get there a day early and get some practice in you should be able to work out some kind course management plan that will work with your abilities. good luck. see you at worlds.

Thanks Martin - I can stand and deliver as well as jump putt relatively straight for 100-125 feet, and I'm arriving at 10AM Thursday to get a look at the place so hopefully that will help. I'll spend all day there and do extra work on the holes that look like they will need it.

Thanks for your insight and I look forward to seeing you at Worlds - Dinner 1 night during the week (except Banquet night) is on me my friend!

got to play the course today.... steve says there is a drought and things are dry, but it looks pretty good to me :) you guys will have a great time there....

Are we now allowed to play the course for practice?

no, didnt want to give that impression.... as a hole sponsor (wasatch disc golf club), and being in the neighborhood to drop off a replacement disc steve let me borrow, he let me play a round. as a matter of fact he was pulling the course that night for another tournament that neeeded his baskets, the victoria? i think thats this weekend in the houston neighborhood....

I can't talk about States?.........there isn't even a thread yet.... lol

Truthfully States is what I am starting to worry more about.....since Climo, Shultz, and others might not show to US Masters.......although I'm sure they will sign up eventually.

Courses and cash will be a bigger issue to the NT field vs the field that will make up US Masters if you ask me.

Matt, you do realize that your incessant complaining does help push more folks away from playing here right? I am just an 800s rated REC player and always will be, but I have played a large number and variety of courses. I've played everything from World's in KC to Mini's at the likes of Moffit and Braun Springs (pitch and putts) and I've played ball golf for a longer number of years and understand the various aspects of both games pretty well. Steve has already admitted that Shawshank may not be the number 1 championship course in all the world, although I don't think he should have to admit that.

I've not been on the message boards (either locally or nationally) for quite some time now (over a year) and there is only one person in the world that I can thank for that other than myself. So thank you for helping me remain unglued from the garbled world of disc golf message boards.

The two times I've played Shawshank I had a wonderful time, the course was challenging but fair. Sure it may end up that the 1000 rated players shoot 10 or 20 under, but I don't think that will mean they won't have a great time. Do you think the Masters of Ball golf is really played on one of the most challenging courses out there? If you do, then you don't know that sport so well. Climo's not showing this year, I hope it isn't because he's been reading this message board as I made the mistake of doing this morning. Seriously, I just came here to get some fun hype before the event. Do you remember what it's like to have a weekend of 100% pure fun playing a game you love?

If you really want to promote disc golf in a better light or bring in more spectators and money, I've got a few ideas:

1) Quit blaming courses and venues for the quality of golf played or the good times had; these are both people issues.
2) Compete at your best level and understand that certain courses may not play to your strengths (e.g. big arm, wooded play, wind play, etc.)
3) Understand that the people for whom you are currently trying to speak (Masters) are possibly a bit older and even sometimes wiser than you, and may not have the same perspective on things as you have
4) Don't blame someone else when they are doing more than you are. It's like complaining about politicians incessantly but never voting or being involved in the political process... falling on deaf ears.
5) Most of all, I think the entire group of pros could do disc golf a huge favor by interacting more with Galleries, acting like they are having the time of their lives while playing (even if losing and hurting on the inside), and showing us that even at the highest level of competition you all understand what is really important and why we are doing these silly things like throwing plastic platters around the woods in the first place.

I know a few pros personally that despite their occasional anger on the course or complaints about a venue, that understand the importance of this public perception. It trumps any one of your individual wins. For instance if I had met someone in such a bad state of mind at my first tournament (Alabama States '06), I would probably have relegated myself to casual play only. However, I was lucky enough to get to warm up at that Tourney with Tom Monroe and Dean Tannock, and they were still enthusiastic about the sport despite being in it much longer than you've been on this earth. Wish I got to see them again at the Masters, but perhaps due to some bashing on this board, they decided it wasn't worth the trip.

Thanks again for my next trip into Disc Golf Message Board Hibernation.

This was from January 12th.......I haven't really posted since

Also I just try to state in advance the types of complaints that will likely be voiced at the event. If they choose not to come that just means they felt it was in their best interest and I think that is better than coming to the event and then claiming you will never come back to TX.

It also looks like I may be coming down to watch/caddy this weekend.

It's all good. I just had to respond to the older part of the thread since I hadn't been on in forever. I know you are a good guy Matt and just trying to help the sport to be better. Sometimes the best we can do though is to be as realistic and positive as possible. Not all venues are going to match up with USDGC, Vibram, Toboggan, etc... So you aren't doing Rockwall? See you out there and we'll all have fun I'm sure.

Your right! To think I would go out there and not help is a poor assumption on your part.

Also I bashed the idea of an event of such scale on such a limited course........and this weekend lots of complaints were voiced at TX States on the topic of courses for "Elite" events. Some of these statements were pretty nasty and it actually caught me off guard that some of these guys would say such mean things about those who had the initiative to host the event..

Because of the above I stated that to blame the host is often not correct and sometimes those who chose the location are more at fault than those who spent hundreds of hours trying to make a course ready for play that should have never been considered in the first place.

I have never doubted that the event would run smooth or that a lack of enthusiasm was a problem but I still feel that had more incentive been given to host clubs there would have been more than 2 bids and therefore a better venue could have been chosen.

Well said MP, Matt pretty much summed up how the Pro's feel because he knows ...and it pretty much confirms how I feel about some of the Pros(not all) One might think that the Pro's of our sport would be ambassadors of the sport full time, not just when their getting paid. I was excited that the pros were coming to town to play our courses, to see dgolf played at its best by the best....was let down by their demeanor, ego's, talking out the side of their mouths, disrespect and attitude. From what I have heard from several sources about what was coming from pros mouths, I am very dissappointed. Sorry the event wasn't enjoyed by all. Sorry expectations weren't meet for all.....but from what I gather, a majority of the dgolfers this weekend enjoyed the courses and layouts. We will continue work on these courses to improve them so "all" might enjoy them. And God help us...but we have property on the other side of the channel that is prime territory for another top course (depending on your view)

Thanks to all who helped pull Texas States off....you know who you are...thanks to the PDGA, their help and staff was beyond words...THANK YOU!!!!!

Better venue...BS ....better players.....

Looks like par for the 27-hole layout was 87, with six pro par four holes - holes H,F,D,S, 7, and 10. Out of the 186 player field, only nine golfers were under par. Players who shot an 88, one over par, shot a 1000+ rated round.

What a fun course, a little less wind and I think I could have shot better. Out of 27 holes I only found 2 that I didn't think had a decent fairway, 4 and 15. I may not play a course like this very well, but I enjoy it much more than a wide open course. You have to think on every shot and the upshots are different every time you play it. I feel that I need to adjust my game to match the course, talked to a few players this weekend who seemed to think that all the courses should be adjusted to fit their game. If you threw a "perfect" shot that hit a branch 20 feet off the ground in the middle of the fairway, then I'm sorry, but it wasn't a perfect shot, a perfect shot would have been a foot lower. Just my opinion. Had a great time, thanks to all involved.

My sincere Thanks to the DuFrane Family and everyone who volunteered to make this event happen. It was 4 days of self-inflicted torture and I enjoyed every minute of it. I think every tourney should require the skills that this course demanded. It puts everyone to the test, rewarding those who play with their heads and with the ability to throw many different types of shots, not just wide open boomers. Speaking for myself, I would return again to play a tourney here, I got a personal score to settle with Death Row!! :D

Players who shot an 88, one over par, shot a 1000+ rated round the first day.
Players who shot a par 87 the second day recorded an unofficially rated 1001 round.
Looks like par for the 21-hole layout on the third day was 67, and players who shot par put up an unofficial 999-rated round.

Out of the 186 player field, only eleven golfers finished under par, and there are already several glowing reviews of the beautiful and challenging course.

Results from the Mulligan Team Doubles on Thursday:

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q193/ejubin/Disc%20Golf%20Events/ts_usm_2011_doubles_results.jpg

The mulligans actually did a pretty good job of evening the field across the ratings. The higher rated players still shot slightly better on average. And with the exception of one outlier player in the 2MPH group the data shows that even two mulligans per hole was not enough to bring the sub-900 rated players into the same grouping with everyone else. The mulligans were not "free strokes", just because you had a mulligan (or two) didn't mean it was necessarily going to help you.

The data below is for individual players, not teams.

I read all of Matt's comments coming into this event. He couldn't have been any more WRONG and did nothing more than prove his youthfull ignorance.

When I arrived and walked the property, I was truley amazed at how beautifull it was and how difficult some of the holes appeared to be , as it should be. AND it was!

Thanks to all of the staff, volunteers and the Dufrane family. This is one that will be burned into the front of the memory bank for a long time to come.

To Matt Hall, your ability to reveiw and critique a course has been officially terminated, your opinions are not those of the majority of golfers out there. This has now been proven in a Huge way. Just continue to rave about al the courses you can bomb on, and rip the ones that require skill and mental thought. But don't worry Matt, some day when you get older, you'll have the skills it takes to play that course well.

Matt's not as wrong as some think. There are a few great holes out there, and the HFDS temp holes were actual golf holes as well that were fair. But let's be honest, too many of the holes are just goofy luck holes. You can't tell anyone whose rating is above 950 that a 4 foot wide "fairway" is not about getting lucky.

I can certainly appreciate a lot of the course and I thought it was funny that the designer laughs off the complaining by saying "when you go to prison it's not all fun" but let's not hold this course up as an example of good design.

A well run tournament, certainly. Great payout, yes. Sam Houston's grave, worth the detour. Hospitality, wonderful. But please, stop pretending that 250 foot par 4s are worthy of a pDGA "major".

Thanks to the people of Shawshank and all of the volunteers. The tourney ran smoothly and the four extra holes were awesome. The US Masters experience was fantastic. thanks (I'll be back to get my revenge on the tin cup!)

I have a ton of fun every round I get to play at ShawShank. And even though I wasn't at 100% physically as I would've prefered, I still had a ton of fun and got to meet a lot of new disc golfers from all over the place! Very cool.

The main criticism I have with how the event was run was that the 8 minute tee time intervals weren't long enough. While every card seemed to be able to play the first hole in 8 minutes, there wasn't a card out there that seemed to be able to play holes #10 and Death Row in 8 minutes. This caused HUGE backups on those holes. When we walked up to the tee on Death Row we became the 5th card waiting in line to tee off!

This totally sucked. We can't throw any discs to keep warm, there were no refreshments or water there, and we were faced with almost a 35 minute wait.

Geez folks - I went on record with the organizers pleading with them that they needed to actually time a handful of cards playing those holes to determine what the timing interval needed to be in order to prevent just what happened. Quite obviously, that didn't happen...I guess it wasn't as important as getting 186 players into the event.

I heard that there were some cards out there experiencing 6+ hour rounds because of backups...

At least on Sunday, we had Steve Dodge setting up a table with all of the new Vibram discs on display at Death Row's tee box. Thanks for giving us some distraction Steve!

Steve Dufrane great time thanks to your family and staff. It was fun meeting so many new faces and running into so many old ones (technically they are almost all old faces) I want to come back and shoot the golf I can not the golf I did. Also I have a pink 12 time wraith and a pink destroyer marked with an ace in the water on eighteen. I would love to get them back. If they appear let me know about shiping etc.

Thanks to all the spotters and everyone who helped get this thing together. I had a good time even though I played like crap again. Was just wondering which charity received the $820 of ace pot money and when was it decided that the money would be donated if no ace was hit?

I want to express my thanks to the Maestro/Conductor/Designer of Shawshank--Mr. Steve Du Frane. You have created an amazing disc golf experience, and treated everyone as though they were old friends. As I told you personally, ShawShank plays its own unique melody, and whether it was the song the course sang to me or whether it was Tim Selinski himself, I found a strange peace while wandering your grounds and I anxiously await the next time I'll get to face the course that is SHAWSHANK! "Warden" thanks for the greeting at the gate, for eating my pizza when I wasn't paying attention and for letting me leave a Champion.

To Tiffany, all of the volunteers, the HFDS, the PDGA and Innova Discs, thank you for an amazing experience and a trip I'll never forget. To the men I competed against and with, thank you. I truly appreciate the fire and passion each of you have for the game and the things that I learned from each of you. Thank you "Yeti" for the karaoke on the video and the always ready smile that never fails to help relax the soul. Equally as important, thank you Des for your spotting expertise on our final hole each day and for waving all my shots safely onto the island.

I owe thanks to some very special people who helped make my trip to the US Masters a reality.

Dough Duff - Thank you sir for the encouragement and the sponorship (with incentives) to get me off the fence, and get me focused on the task of preparing for and winning a US Masters title. Thanks for believing in me Duff, you got this ball rolling, now let's see where it takes us. Doubled up on your butt, that doesn't happen often:)

Jeff Ash- Thank you sir for your help with sponosrship, the encouragement and support and the sage advice only World Champions can provide.

Fish and Leaping Lab-Thanks brother! For the gear I wore and the years of support and encouragement, and all those days we spent putting during lunch when we were working together finally paid off. Thank you, we miss you and look forward to seeing you soon.

My Mom--Karen Coons--Thanks for the support and sponsorship throughout my lifetime-heck, I finally won something!

Twisted Flyer-Joe Rotan and Danielle--Thank you both for the encouragement during the week, helping me learn the course and keeping relaxed and laughing. I truly appreciate the advice you gave me, and the friendship we have.

Ron Robertson-Road dog, room mate and competitior. Thanks for being there this week, for putting up with me, for offering me a place to stay and early on encouraging me to get ready.

Kelly "Kel-Dog" Watson, David "Two-Putt" Wise and all the rest who have given me so much encouragement, support, advice and CRAP over the years. Thank you for adding fuel to my fire.

Most importantly thank you to my wife Stacey, and our two little girls Sara and Myah. I so wish you could have been here with me to win your own title. Thank you for supporting my decision, for giving me permission:), for all of the encouragement and love. I couldn't have done it without you. We did it baby!!!! I love you and thank you. USWDGC?

Now---anybody interested in helping this hillbilly from Arkansas find his way to Rochester this summer? I've got 3 buddies holding World Titles over my head and I'd sure like a chance to show them and Worlds what this disc golfer from Arkansas has got to offer, before I jump into the shark tank of professional disc golf..

Hey isn't Milford, MI on the way to NY? Never been there either...hmmm? Might be fun to try that one, a first and last time, as well. Anybody heading either way give me a holla'. Please!

Great slide show! Thanks for posting. Also thanks to the Dufrane's, TD Tiffany, SueMac and all others that helped, volunteered & played. I was blown away by Bruce, Tamara, Jose & Fabian for making the trip from Corpus Christi to volunteer all three days. Way above and beyond the call, and totally appreciated. I owe all of y'all for sure!

Thanks windsurf17 it was certainly my pleasure. On an unrelated note I bought a "Daily Drive" print from Jimbo (PDGA 133) and when I came back from my car with the money I owed him I did not find him. If someone knows how to get in touch with him please send me a message. Thanks.

so in the PDGA wirte up it talks about the safe house charity. here is the quote

"The SAAFE House was the chosen charity for the event and benefited doubly when no one sank an ace all weekend and they got half the Ace pot. "

so myu question is where is the other half of the ace pot???

EvntCoord
Apr 14 2011, 04:27 PM
$820 Ace Pot
As per publicly announced and distributed after the putting contest:
SAAFE House = $400
As per suggested by the players, announced, and distributed after the putting contest:
DuFrane family for course clean-up and re-maintenance expenses = $420

If any player who entered the $5 ace pot does not agree with that distribution please contact Neal at 281 851 8872 to discuss.

Hey Sharky,

You best bet for contacting Jimbo is to email Gordon of the Waterloo Disc Golf Club.
His email is gordon AT ventbird DOT com.

You didn't ask but what the heck.

I first met Jimbo in 1978 at the 2nd Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic in Austin.
He is still the official artist for that event.
He owns a sign company in Austin. Hand painted signs, none of that fancy modern stuff.
133 is a mistake, that's not his PDGA number.
After 33 years I've never met anyone that knows his last name.

ETA: Dang it, Gordon snuck one in on me.

Too bad that the US Masters wasn't available to watch live on-line instead of all those rookies at the Collegiate Championships. Would have made way more sense.

I'm thinking the potential audience for the Collegiates is bigger than any other event the PDGA hosts if the word gets out on those campuses.

I tuned in for about 5 minutes. That was all I needed to see that I wasn't being entertained.
I'll take quality over quantity any time. It was way worse than watching the Ams at The Memorial.

I'm guessing since you posted in this thread you're not exactly living down the hallway in the same dorm as one of the guys playing in the Collegiate.

I enjoyed watching the Collegiate footage. I donate my $20 every time and I will continue to. I love watching disc golf and these kids were fun to see.

Think big picture. I would have preferred to see our top pro's but the whole college team approach can do really big things for our sport.

Showing college disc golf on TV can be right there with the other televised college athletic events.

I think it was good for them to get this on their resume as another option as we shop our sport around.
