Three courses, all pretty long, but challenging with the Wilmont (Wilmonster) being the longest. The signature "dragon" is 613' with a narrow fairway - road to the left, water to the right. You'll love these courses, and this will be just as awesome an even, if not more so. Texas States always has been. I'm not involved anymore, but I do know that no matter who has stepped up to run it over the years, they managed to keep with the tradition of a great and well respected tournament.
Someone should write a complete history of the Tom Bass disc golf complex. This has been the home of the Texas State DGC since September of '96 and the 2002 Pro Worlds. I think i'll work on that. The first time I played it at WBDGW in May of '95, the Powell (just "Tom Bass" at the time) was the only course, at it only had 15 permanent baskets. In September of '96, The Powell and the new Wilmont course (designed by Don WILchek & Dan LaMONT) were both used for the first TSDGC with portable baskets on the Wilmont.

More wide open, fewer water hazards. Ike put a beatdown on the park, but the crew has really stepped it up with the cleaning and tinkering. And the Dragon got a couple more teeth...
And an added sidebar...we've passed last year's added cash and sponsors are still shuffling in...

Geez...I must be slippin a few cogs. I thought I had been watching for online registration to go up almost every single night, but I missed a couple of nights...I didn't snag the first online entry this year, but I think I made the Top 10 - disc nation's reg page for TxStates (https://www.discnation.com/product.php?productid=17269) showed that there was a quantity of 204 left...
Last year's venue would be difficult to beat. Bass sure isn't gonna come close. But the absolute BEST thing about it is that once again, all courses will be at a single facility!!! I've got to tell ya, that aspect always adds SO much to this event in terms of positive vibes.
Would it be considered "hi-jacking" the thread to make a plug for our local folks (or visitors) to start practicing up their competitive spirits by playing in the Commando Mini on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am?
(If so...then I'll refrain and go plug for it elsewhere!) :D
Looking forward to playing in another Texas States.

What? Huh? No...the Commando Mini still continues to be run every Sunday morning at Spring Valley. (At 10:00 am)
I was just plugging for everyone to get in the spirit of a little competitive action before Texas States at Bass. We have been getting an average of almost 20 players a week lately and I've actually been giving some thought to potentially running a 2-round edition of the Commando before States. I'll do a survey this weekend and see what folks think about it. Hard to imagine a cheaper 2-round competition, isn't it? :D

The Quail Valley courses at last year's TxSDGC were fantastic. The response to them and the facility was overwhelmingly positive. Unfortunately due to the city's purchase of the country club and subsequent revamping the ball golf courses we were not able to return this year.
Would someone mind putting a good review on DG CourseReview?
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/reviews.php?id=171&page=1&mode=rev#1259
Note: I think the 12/29/2008 review that's posted is for the Powell, not Wilmont.
For TxSDGC the 18-hole Wilmont course usually plays is almost the normal configuration. I believe this year it will play the exact normal configuration, though holes #7 and #12 have been changed because of Hurricane Ike effects.
The 18-hole Powell course does not play its normal layout. Some of the standard Powell holes/baskets become part of the temporary "Tourney" course. As such there are several new (temporary) holes that are part of the "Powell States" layout.
The 18-hole "Tourney" course is a temporary course that is a mix of several of the standard Powell holes and new temporary holes. Tourney #16 is the legendary "Dragon" hole. This year's "Tourney" will feature some new holes due to park policy changes.
On Sunday the 24-hole "West" course is a mix of Wilmont and Tourney holes, the 24-hole "East" course is a mix of Tourney and Powell States holes.
Maps will be forthcoming.

Anyone want to take any bets on whether Texas States will reach the goal of $5,000 added cash this year?
It's going to be close! The Commando Mini is still listed as a $750 sponsor, but it's fund is already at $772 with at least 5 more weekends of play! With a few good weekends between now and Texas States time, it might get pretty close to the $1,000 mark!
If that happens, then there will be over $5,000 added cash to the Texas States jackpot! :D

There was a HUGE turnout of people at last night's combined Texas States/HFDS meeting. I'm guessing close to 20 people attended. Sure is great to see of the new volunteer blood getting involved in it! Thanks a million folks!
I don't want to usurp the TD's privilige to get to announce such things, but we'll top $5,000 added cash easily...probably more like around $5,200-5,500. The added cash amount while only particularly relevant to the Pro divisions, it is also a great indicator of how great the Am side payout will be too. In the past, we've paid out our Ams at above 175% of entry fees. This year, I think its safe to predict that the Am payout levels will be at least kind of range.
Here is another enticing little tid-bit: The Round Rock club is putting up their $100 bounty for a deuce on the Dragon hole! I am going to sweeten the pot a bit more (since we've never gotten a "taker" on the prize) and add $100 of my cash to the prize pot. "Slay the Dragon" by throwing over the pond and scoring a 2 on the hole and you'll get to claim the prize! (Multiples will split it.)
$200 for slaying the Dragon!!! That ought to give some of you something to think about! :D
Registration has started out kind of slow this year, but I'm encouraging all of you to get off the fence and get registered for this event.
In our usual fashion, we've got a lot of other fun stuff happening this year: Treasure of Wilmont hunt, Slay the Dragon, jumbo toss putting contest, raffle prizes, fly-mart on Saturday night, and beer tent!
We're looking at hosting a great event again this year!

The Commando Mini was my best estimation of what our contribution to Texas States would be...it's looking pretty good though that we'll probably just make the magic $1,000 mark. We topped $900 today! We only need a couple more good weekend...I'm hoping we might be able to capitalize on folks wanting to get into a little competitve spirit on Sunday mornings after practicing the Bass courses on Saturday.
Mr Ed Morgan donated his winnings to the Texas States fund this morning putting us at exactly $910.

It would be interesting to track each year how much money or percentage of sponsorship is starting to come from outside the sport versus within the sport as a means to see growth in recognition of disc golf's potential to help sponsors not currently affiliated with disc golf. Still doesn't look like much from the outside yet from looking at that list, as impressive as it is from the inside. Congrats!

Warlocks...It kind-of depends on what division you are playing in and how well you play. Generally speaking, the better you play, the later you get to sleep in on Sunday - which also means the later you'll finish on Sunday.
If you play in a lower division, then you'll be going off earlier and if you are in either Advanced or Open division, then you'll be teeing off last. You'll have to consult the official schedule/program to figure out which of the courses you'll be playing: Open on the West-24 and Adv. are slated for the East I think.
I picked up one of the full-color Buzzes last weekend with a pair of the glasses. It rocks! The disc design is awesome without the 3D effect. Neal did another superb job in designing it...Discraft did a great job of printing them.
I'm not sure that the photo below shows how vivid those discs have turned out. I'm gonna have to bribe Mr. Ed about getting to be first in line when those things go on sale...I'm snagging at least 2 more of the 3D discs and probably a fist-full of the CFRs too...

I didn't get a good look at the schedule before I signed up and didn't know that different divisions would play different courses. I signed up MA2 and looking at the schedule I will not be playing the Tourney course. What are the preferred courses to play? Would I play the better parks and harder layouts in MA1 because that is more important to me than playing to my rating.
ERicJ
Mar 18 2009, 02:30 PM
Check the maps and note that the "West" and "East" courses played on Sunday are a merging of the "Wilmont", "Tourney", and "Powell-States" courses that are played on Saturday (with the exception of one new hole on East).
West is all of Wilmont plus six holes from Tourney.
East is 14 holes from Powell-States, nine holes from Tourney, and one hole unique to East.
As currently scheduled MA1 plays Wilmont, Tourney and East. As the higher division they get the benefit of playing the maximum number of different holes. The only holes they don't see are Powell-States #2-4, #6.
MA2 is currently scheduled to play Powell-States, Wilmont, and West. Since they play West on Sunday they still get some of the cooler holes from Tourney, including the infamous "Dragon" (Tourney #16) and "Texas Island" (Tourney #2) holes. The holes they won't see are Tourney #6-15, #17-18 and East #14.
(This info is subject to change, but that's not likely this late in the game.)

Can anyone comment on what type of foot wear works well to enjoy the round?
Tees are natural, i.e. not concrete or rubber, if that helps your decision.

I have played several courses in Houston area but the worst I have played so far with regards to standing water was Cypress but this course has concrete tee's. I was just woundering if water socks and regular disc golf shoes would work? or if cleats are a must due to the conditions!

I defer to Eric in holes played but I submit he mis-named them: the "Disc-eating Dragon", The "Texas State of Despair" (not everything is bigger in Texas, meaning the green ), or the 2 "double dang mandos of death" holes.
Yes, you will not get to play about half the tourney: On the positive side: (score-wise) you get only one opportunity to lose all your discs in the Dragon and have to throw the rest of your round with putters: ....I believe the tournament record for discs lost in one attempt to slay the Dragon is 7 however, a world-class player lost 6 a few years back (confirmation - Larry, Tony?)
However, I'll bet Mr. Conaway would switch you to a higher division if you insist on feeding the Dragon. As of this morning 64 registered, still plenty of slots in all the divisions if you care to up the ante.
Footwear? Bring it all - except you snowbirds from MICHIGAN - no snowmobile boots! I know you were tempted....
more like soccer cleats or hiking boots, water proof socks

I hate the Tx State Island hole!I have seen way too much stuff happen on that hole without the island and with it there are a lot of rolls to worry about.
Maybe I am mad because I rolled out two years ago, threw it in from the drop zone but it spit and rolled back out, and had to hit that for a circle 5 to finish. That is just one of my horrid states stories from years past but I was -5 that round going into the dragon and went 5-4-5-4-5 to finish.........
BTW I need me one of those Discs. Anything else besides buzzes?

The SuperColor discs are Buzzzes and Surges. There are also SuperColor minis with the 3-D artwork.
There will be a variety of single color stamped Discraft stuff which I believe will include: FLX/ESP/Z-Avenger, FLX/ESP/Z-Avenger SS, FLX/ESP/Z-Buzzzz, ESP/Z-Flash, Z-Flick, ESP/Z-Force, Z-Glide, FLX/ESP/Z-Predator, FLX/ESP/Z-Surge, FLX/Z-Surge SS, ESP-Impact, ESP-Meteor, ESP-Pulse, ESP-Zone, and FLX-Challenger...

I always thought it was three to make a division. Also, I believe concessions are usually made and special things are done for the women's divisions because the turnout is usually small, and TDs want to do everything they can to make their tournament attractive to them. I've noticed that the Texas Womens Championships has gotten to be a fairly large event. I'm surprised that that hasn't spilled over in to this and other tournaments.

As proposed right now: The hole has been shortened to about 550' - The tee has been moved to directly behind the island so that you have two possible routes - left along the road or right toward the amphitheatre. the fairway on the left starts to narrow diagonally at the road about 200' out to the 2nd light pole - about half the normal width) at about 350' out where it opens back up to normal.
The right side follows the curve of the pond around to the basket. It has roped OB most of the way to the basket with about a 75'-wide strip for the landing area the entire length. It appears to play a little longer but that could be an optical delusion.
Because of the righty route, the hole that used go from the concrete pad next to the amphitheatre (Tourney #3 323' with the pond about 12' behind the basket) now goes to the edge of the parking lot to the left - so don't park there unless you want to risk your truck's showroom-like appearance.

millinium disc and thank you for the information on the dragon will the $200 bounty still be in effect since the hole has changed?
Yes SeeDub, I have withdrawn my offer of $100 bounty on the (formerly known as "The Dragon") hole. The distance is shorter and the newer layout gives a player right or left options. At first I thought that stringing the high-water line on the pond might make it acceptable enough, but then I witnessed the first advanced card following us have 2 out of the 4 Advanced players clear the length of the pond on their drives, so apparently it has become short enough that it can be hit by a LOT more players. IMO - it just didn't seem bounty-worthy anymore as it wasn't as long and there were a lot more "safe" options for getting to the basket.
It is my hope that we can do a better job of redesigning it so that we can have a Dragon hole back that won't cause the parks department to be nervous about having a fairway close to where it might hit cars...or otherwise interfere with traffic. This change was mandated very late in the game by the park department so we didn't have time to completely redesign everything in time...folks have their hands full just updating the course maps and program OB descriptions etc...
It sure is a bummer losing this signature hole at the last minute like this on a year when we are actually featuring the Dragon as part of the tournament's graphic themes...
I believe that the TD wants to call the new hole Dragon's Tongue, but since it doesn't have the "teeth" of the old Dragon hole, I'm more inclined to think of it as "The Dragon's Gums." :D

Most likely because you waited too long to commit... :( each division/pool has a limit in order to play 3 courses....but I will check...yes, there is limit of 40 for ADV and apparently we have reached it. As of the update last night there were only 6 spots left in B pool and they must have filled. You could contact the staff and see about a waiting list or play another division that you qualify for. Go to one of the url's in the above post and contact Billy or Chuck and get on the wait list for ADV. They will contact you if something opens up.

The only guarantee at this time is to get in the tournament is that you sign up now for a PRO div that you qualify for before it fills.

The par 6 "horseshoe" tee for #14 that was played on the Sunday layout (West course) is in even worse condition than the normal par 5 #14 tee. The truck drivers doing all the hurricane Ike work were not kind to that area.

I am leading a group of 60 to clean sweep Zilker Park. Its apart of Keep Austin Beautiful's Clean Sweep. We expect over 5000 volunteers this year. Be at Zilker's Playscape Saturday morning at 9am to participate. If you are late, just grab a garbage bag and some gloves.
You can sign up on their website or just show up at one of your local park.
Hope the tournament goes well for everyone. Please make "Us" look good out there.
Good Luck to Jay, Matt, Robbie and all the ladies battling Valarie Jenkins. (good luck with your BUSINESS class Valarie)

E, it's pretty simple if you're coming straight to Bass from Arlington. Take I-45 to the far side of downtown Houston, go south on 288 about 12 miles, exit Beltway 8, turn left and stay on the service road. Go about 1/2 a mile and turn right into the park entrance. When you exit off of 45 onto 288, I believe you have to get immediately over to the left, or you'll end up on 59.

288 is not a toll road. Beltway 8 is, but you'll be staying on the access road, not entering the beltway. When you enter the park from the access road, you'll run straight into the headquarters, assuming it's in the same pavilion it has been in past years, pretty much in the middle of all the courses.

Nah it wasn't!!! Texas is MUCH BIGGER than that one! Harlingen should be at about the bottom of the hill (near the DZ) and the top of the state should be on top of the hill. But even putting the size of it aside for a second, it doesn't look like Texas. Somebody needs to be standing at the tee box to provide a little guidance on how to stretch it out a bit so that from the perspective of the tee box (or road) that it looks in the right proportion.
I hit Texas with a good drive at around Texarkana, but it did a little spin around and ended up 6" outside of the string. :(

Nope...it doesn't have anything to do with whether I missed it or not Christian...it's still lots smaller than it has ever been in the past...but that's okay. We can play it as the "West Virginia" hole this year.
It isn't like the setup crew wasn't provided with advice on how to set it up and the rough size of it, but sometimes those guys just like to do things their own way regardless of the advice given. I have set that outline up twice in the past. It is hard to do it when you are standing on a hillside and the perspective is going to be at an oblique angle. The first time, I ended up with El Paso curled around almost under Wilmont's (reg.) #16.

Sounds good. You guys call me(512-801-TIME). I'll be there later today...getting on the road in about an hour. Making it a full disc golf week. Staying with an Uncle and a buddy.
Look forward to better weather than 2007

Mike is conversing with animals again.
So, I see some rain might be moving through. Will WillY still remain dry? Has it been mowed?

Out of curiosity, did you guys schedule the Texas State DGC to deliberately coincide with the PGA's Shell Houston Open, or was it just random coincidence?

It is the other way around. The reasoning about getting the Shell Open the week before Augusta is all spin. The stick guys just want to feed off of disc golf's magic.
Does a north wind really bring the surf up?

Yes, the north wind pushes against the water as it comes in, getting underneath it and propping up the waves.

Is there a brewery/restaurant in the area of the course?
Also is there any good seafood places near the course?
THANKS!

Good explaination... And the end result, Ground Swell...

Just checked the reg. list and it's showing a full-house at 216 registered players!
I guess that pretty much answers all of the day-of wannabe's...everyone is wait-list from now on.
Only a couple more days to go...
We got a bit of rain around here last night and this morning, but it probably won't be bad on Saturday. Might be a tad muddy in some spots tomorrow, but there is a good breeze blowing out there right now and that will dry things out in a hurry!

Wind is definitely up down here. Our trailer at work (5 miles from Bass) is trying to fly away.
And it did rain this morning, but right now you cannot tell that it did.

Good explaination... And the end result, Jake takes the afternoon off and hits the beach...
