So does the water in the first pond ever clear up? i threw a big hizer on the first hole and it missed the edge by a few feet (fishers were watching us, with a newborn which is why i threw it too **** wide! i hate kids on golf courses! :P an they spotted where it went in) and even after jumping in my disc was no where to be found, bright neon green/yellow star boss with a purple stamp. Figured it would be easy to spot but when i got over there the water was a black hole!

Birdie
Aug 30 2009, 06:02 PM
So the first pond, as in hole 8 right?

No, I don't think that is ever what you would call "clear" but it does get better and worse, usually depending on how recently it has rained.

I guess my advice would be to go in after it again.

They can drift quite a bit from where they hit initially.

I believe it is true that if you learn on a tight course keeping the line is much easier.
I have talked to Larry Leonard and most of the courses in the SouthEast are wooded.
And many top players come out of areas of the country that are more wooded.
I believe KMac will also attest to this.
So on that note most OK players are at a disadvantage
Most of our courses are more open.
The exception is if you are playing in the wind
and the other person just can't handle the wind.
The other thing is most casuals usually stay far away from the wooded courses.
So here lies the problem.
Do you want more players overall or do you want your core players to be better?
Been discussed many times over just thought I would bring it up again.
D.P.

Why can't we have both? The biggest problem is the terrain around the metro areas that have couses. They're all flat. We can get some holes in woods, like blackhawk but overall we don't have too many choices and opportunities to have courses with woods and elevation. Even the lodge isn't tight when comparing to the courses back east or in the northwest. I do agree that learning on tight courses can make a better player but Dale is right about the wind. Those tight course players seem to struggle on some of our courses if the wind is up.

I think Tulsa offers a great variety of courses. From short beginner to the pro courses. Black hawk can still wreck some great players. Just think about how far you would have to drive to find the variety we have. It would have to be at least 4 hours in any direction. Just compare what we have to OKC. While they have a few good ones, they don't have the choices we do. You would have to go to the Dallas area or KC to beat what we have.

As long as places like Cali, the northwest, the east and the michigan area have the courses they have, they will always produce more top golfers than we will. we just need to play them in the wind.

mtreat
Sep 05 2009, 01:16 PM
I came back from Worlds with a mission to develop courses with woods and elevation.

Playing KC showed me a couple of good things about my game but it also showed some big holes.

Rosedale Down Under was brutal for me. Cliff Drive has 9 holes that are very similar.

Honestly our best bet is get Copperhead polished up. The elevation isn't as severe as Rosedale but it is the best I know of around here.

If anyone has anyother areas in mind let us know. To truely be the ultimate disc golf mecca we need an east coast type of course.

As to Dale's question, the fact is we need a steep woody course to make our core players better. Not every course needs to be suited to casuals alone.

Just my opinion...

Big Easy
Sep 06 2009, 01:19 AM
Agreed.
With the courses Tulsa has we should be able to cover it ALL.

So here I am looking in trees, neighbors backyards (more than one occasion) and I even climbed the two story house from the rock fireplace outside. Nope not their either. So today i give it another shot look in my backyard and then the neightbors again. climb a tree to get a better view. Someone please check on the baskets at the Civitan. Saw a newer model Blue toyota prius pulling into Kum n Go in Muskogee with a basket in the rear. It was a course style basket and not a traveler. It could very well have been these two guys basket but it just didn't feel right. I didn't get the tag because I was leaving as they were pulling in. But I got a pretty good description and if baskets are missing might be able to use video from the store to get the tag #. This was on 8-17-10 about 10:15 on peak Blvd in Muskogee. Thanks.

Found this in my email this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For immediate release:
August 25, 2010
This year marks the 12th anniversary of the United States Disc Golf Championship (USDGC). Since its inception in 1999, the USDGC has grown into one of disc golf’s premier championship events. Innova Disc Golf, in association with the event’s many volunteers, sponsors, USDGC Partners, Winthrop University, and the Professional Disc Golf Association, is extremely proud to have been such an integral part of our game’s history.
Innova considers it a privilege to be in a leadership position. We have seen disc golf, and our business, grow and change tremendously over nearly three decades. The disc golf market is continually expanding and Innova is more committed than ever to improving our service to this incredibly diverse community of players.
In recognition of the growth of disc golf around the globe, we have decided to move the USDGC to a biennial schedule. Effective immediately, the USDGC will alternate years with Europe’s major event – The European Open. The USDGC will be held in even numbered years and the European Open in odd numbered years. This will enable better global promotion of professional disc golf, as well as afford us an opportunity to serve another important segment of the disc golf population.
Amateur and recreational golfers represent the fastest growing portion of the disc golf community. With these players in mind, a new event will visit the famous grounds at Winthrop University in 2011. Details will be forthcoming, but two of the guiding principles will be: Amateurism and Fun Competition in a Professional Setting at Winthrop. Despite these changes our mission remains the same; to live disc golf and to enable others to discover such a wonderful lifetime sport.
We are excited about the future of disc golf, more so than ever before. Opportunity for the game’s advancement abounds. We are confident that this new schedule will allow the USDGC to sustain its tradition of excellence, while building an even better fan base for the game’s elite.
One thing you can count on this fall is that Innova and the USDGC family are steadily preparing for our greatest tournament experience to date. We look forward to October, and to seeing you here.
Warmest regards,
Innova Disc Golf

that sounds terrible, how can you take away the US CHAMPIONSHIP. we lose the biggest and best professional event every other year? well.... looks like I can go to worlds and vibram next year...

Aug 26 2010, 10:37 AM
Paul, I think it is their belief that by having it every two years it will allow them to put even more money towards the payout. Just think if 1st paid 30K instead of 15k.

How do you think we feel as partners? Annual membership for a bi-annual event.

And, if you don't like that announcement, just wait till you get the next one.

mtreat
Aug 26 2010, 11:41 AM
Thats a good one Dave.

The announcment means Innova has also figured out there is profit in ams and only cash out for pro's..

And, they want to expand their Europe market. I can't say I blame them on either front, but business and nothing else is the motivating factor here..

mtreat
Aug 26 2010, 11:42 AM
The second announcement Dave speaks of is rumor only at this time. Keep focusing east for now!!!

twoputtok
Aug 26 2010, 11:51 AM
I didn't tell them where to focus Mike.

I think that all players that are against this should boycott the event in 2011. I know I will.

mtreat
Aug 26 2010, 11:59 AM
I understand Dave, and you are most likely correct about the change. I for one am not ready to accept it.

When I read saw the press announcement in my email, I thought oh crap, things are about to change..

I continue floating down the river of denial!!!

I doubt I boycott, but the luster of being a USDGC partner isn't what it used to be. We both have Roc's on ebay and I am shocked at the lack of activity and low bid amounts.

But, when they announced the general public can by the same disc in two weeks, that has caused a certain amount of confusion amongst the Roc collectors!!!

pdorries
Aug 26 2010, 12:16 PM
There are essentially 3 events every year that are ones you would probably prefer not to miss. Worlds (lots of rounds, good time)... Vibram (awesome tourney because of the Dodges, professionalism)... and USDGC (payout, professionalism) ... and they are taking away US??

How can you do away with the tradition and prestige of THE US CHAMPIONSHIP? Money aside... the professionalism involved with the event and the thrill of trying to qualify as a player for the best event of the year... this will take some of my drive away to travel and play NTs, if I don't need to qualify for a spot.

I really hope they reconsider, but I highly doubt they will, since they have made it public.

Do they really think more players will travel to europe to play in the open? I mean, surely, there will be more attendance, but not really THAT much more.

Oh man, this is sad news. I will cherish this year's tournament even more now.

yeah mostly with asians, im talking about taking a tournament away from US players every other year. im not talking about how those tournaments overseas fill.

Aug 26 2010, 12:51 PM
Paul, you keep coming at this like they are taking something away, when in all reality, the USDGC sees this as a way to give you even more when they do host it.

I use the Japan Open as an example because it has been VERY successfull with a bi-annual format.

Same reasoning that Billy Ray's sells out of smoked chicken on Fridays, its the only day you can get it. If it was everyday, they wouldn't get the same results.

But you are right, this is even more reason to enjoy yourself this year.

I'm curious how the qualifiying will work. Using only the year before the event? Or using both years. Will each state get two spots? Or one every other year? Or if the event becomes huge from this, will the states even get a spot?

I think that this, over time will make the event bigger and better. It is very hard to pull off what they do there every year. The amount of the volunteers needed, course work, preparation, fund rasing......ect. Its a HUGE undertaking. We all want it to be bigger and better and they listened, we just may not like the response.

No matter, we all will adjust to it and it will become the norm. I just hope that they are correct about their decision and decisions yet to be announced.

And think about this, this year they raised right at 58K from Roc sales, now double that for the event, plus everything else they do.

It's not like this is like ball golf where every tournament has a huge purse. I don't see how making it every two years and upping the prize money is any benefit to the players at all. You keep talking about playing for more money, its just playing for the same amount of money once every two years, instead of twice. Now if more events started doing this, say we had 10 NTs every year, and every other year it was a set of 10 different NTs, and the purses were double what they are now, because money was raised every two years, that would be cool!... but if they just took the existing number of NTs and cut it in half and had them be every two years, there is no benefit to that.

I'm not sitting here saying something good can't come from this, I'm just thinking my initial thoughts are, we have a badass tournament that we only get to play once every two years now, instead of every year. It sucks, but apparently it is a reality. I'm sure Innova and the PDGA ... or whoever else was involved in the decision have their reasons that may not be published, hopefully it benefits the players in the long run as well as grows the sport.

If having it every two years means they can budget more toward filming and TV air time... then I am totally for it, the more GOOD QUALITY exposure the better.

I'm not totally opposed, just initially saddened.

I agree.

But just think how big the bag tag match play will be next year?

Enjoy your time there this year Paul.

Aug 26 2010, 03:12 PM
Unless I missed it, I doubt the payout will be double just because it is every other year.

My guess is Jonathan Poole and company, i.e. Innova, will focus all funds and possible Roc sales in the odd years for Europe, even years for USDGC.

I have another guess, the state spots, including state coordinator, will only be available for even USDGC years in the USA.

I bet they do the same program and offer those spots for odd years to the European community..

All just speculation on my part..

I wish that the ODGF could build a gold course for Paul and his closest 15 friends to play on ;) that way we could keep the rest of the local courses casual friendly and grow the total number of players not just the top players.
you know like how there is only one Southern Hills in Tulsa to attract major events and then there are a slew of easier courses and public courses to encourage common folks to play golf.:D

Hey, Cris, I lost a CE leopard at Blackhawk too! I lost it about 3 weeks ago - just left it alongside the fairway on one of the long holes while playing dubs. It used to be purple, but had faded to no-color translucence, so I had The Line put a custom dye on it - a reddish diamond pattern on 1/2 of the disc only. My name and number are on the inside rim, but could be too faded to read. Call me at 918 809 7224 for the reward, either $$ or disc swap out. I'm trying to break in a new Champ Leopard to replace it, but I just cant get used to it.

Lemme see if I can change something that might allow it to work but I'd highly recommend to anyone to browse in anything but internet explorer. I like Chrome (http://www.google.com/chrome) but Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/) is good as well.

And Free.

Ya I finally saw another computer and the first wouldn't load in multiple browsers and yet all will still load in mine, odd :-/

Apparently, despite all the pictures, no one knows who owns that pretty signature anyway.

Paul is a OKC player (last I knew). If your at the team event I think you could send it back with one of the OKC area teams to get it to him.

Yellow champ feldberg boss lost at the lodge during the team event, lost next to the clubhouse in the wide open field (go figure). Name "Tom R III" written underneath.

Innova Champion XCal, magenta-reddish color. Someone picked it up yesterday prior to the mini on Hole #8 at Riverside. Bottom of disk says "Tom R III" and possibly my PDGA number underneath that, #49236.

Please return it, it was my favorite disk.

Dude???

That's lost two discs within about a week and a half.

Hope they come back to you but maybe you should try to land them in the fairway for a change or perhaps strap a GPS device to them.

Just kidding.;)

I remember I lost a special blend at Riverside one time on the old course.

One of the guys on the card in front of us swiped it but because I didn't see them actually pick it up I would have had to woop the whole group to find out who had it hidden under their shirt.

I lost a CE baby blue leopard, with Cris Hicks written in cursive on the bottom and some other signatures (it is an old ace disc I have probably had over 10yrs.). I think I lost it at Black Hawk, but can't be sure because I just noticed it missing (early onset of alzheimers).
If you find it or have found it call me Cris Hicks at (918)407-7904 and I will make sure the reward is worth you getting it back to me.

This has been found, messaged Cris on facebook, will call him tomorrow. :)
