I've been waiting to put up this first post so that we, the ADGA, could show our support for Bryan and Josh and the Carrolton Open. We did give some merchandise to sponsor in the event and we hope they have another huge success this year. However with the onslaught of other smaller events swamping the calender, I think it's time for us to make our selves heard.
Despite the PDGA saying this is our 17th event, I want to point out that the first VPO was held in '91. If you do the math you'll see it's the 18th time to hold the VPO this year. I tried to get the PDGA to fix their post but it seemed to be a little more than they could handle at the time. Rest assured, though, this is the 18th.
With this announcement, I would like to say that the ADGA is back in full force. With the guidance last year of Clay Brummit and this year with Greg Browning the members of the club have worked hard and long to get us back on our feet. Because of this we can guarantee that this years payout will be our best in years with a first place Open check of at least $1000 and at least $400 added to the Pro Women's purse. The Amatuer payouts will be very nice also. As we get a little further along gathering sponsorships, we will be able to tell you more. I'm pretty sure we will have a nice start on the ace pot before any sign ups.
We will be playing 24 hole rounds with two on Saturday and the championship layout Sunday morning for a total of 72 holes. As usual we will finish the weekend in our own unique way with ace in the oaks after tapping the keg.
Josh Dann has been busy with the Carrolton Tournament and I haven't bothered him yet with the sign ups on Titledisc yet, but it will be soon.
So here's to seeing you there and you can expect it to be alot of fun with some very good people.
Thanx, Skip Maxwell #6922

Looks like we'll hold the ADGA Club Championships on Oct. 5th. Regular format with sign-ups starting at 7:30 and meeting at 9:00. This is a fund raiser for the VPO and it's the only chance to re-up for $10. It is an additional $10 to play that day and shoot at the ace pot on both rounds. It is not mandatory to play if you should just want to take care of re-uping for the next year. Membership renewal after the CC is $15 so now is the time to take care of it.
Thnx, Skip

Nothing is concrete yet. The city is very willing to work with us and provide resources as needed. We're going to start by getting Veterans fixed and in tip-top shape. Once we show that we can maintain our current plot of land the best way possible, the city will be happy to work with us on securing another site. My pipe dream is a championship woods course in River Legacy Park, but I don't know if they are willing to part with any land in that park.

Back on topic: the VPO is going to be huge this year. Expect it to be the best VPO you have seen in a long time.

Sign-ups will be available on Titledisc this week. Field will have to be limited to 100 players. There will be no signing up on Sat. morning. The days will be shorter and it will be to everyones advantage for us to be ready to start Sat. with all cards made out. Players packages will be available to all Ams that get signed up by Oct. 29th. I will want to save 45 spots for the pros leaving 55 for the ams.
Also, for the first time since the inaugral Ace in the Oaks, we will be adding money to that purse.

A couple of things to touch on:
First, we are going to guarantee a $750 ace pot and we will be adding a significant amout to the ace in the oaks to make both a little more juicy.
Second, we will be getting tourny discs from Discraft and Innova plus very possibly from DGA and/or Millenium. Question is what discs would you like to see us put the stamp on? John Houck has agreed to sponsor in the VPO so we'll be getting some of his plastic whether it has the stamp on it or not. We are very proud to have John's support. Also, Tom Lowry has come up with a very nice sponsorship. We're looking pretty good people. Hope you have us on your list.
Again, what discs would you like to see the tourny stamp on?

I'm sorry I didn't check Brians site and since he's a fellow ADGA member we'll move it to the following weekend on the 19th. I know this will interfere with another local event somewhere, since our regional director saw fit to stack us like pancakes all on the longest running "A" tier event in Texas. This is to help us obtain as quality event as possible. It's a big job and I'm sorry to all that might get put off by anything I've said.

in fairness, there are so many events in texas that if the bigger events were given "padding" before and after, some events would have to just not happen. Fret not, oh skippy one. The VPO will surely fill to capacity this year :). The ADGA is back in force and the VPO is its time to shine. Last year's event was awesome and I expect nothing but greatness from this year's.

One note - let's have a backup keg tap. trying to find a replacement for the broken one on sunday last year was not the easiest part of my tournament :)

The Club Championships were held yesterday and we had a great response from alot of very good people. This event, as always, is held to help make the ADGA the single largest sponsor to the VPO. I want to make note that every member is a contributer to the success of our premier event. To each one of you, as TD, I want to say thank you very very much for helping to make it as good as we can and for allowing me to represent us.
Greg Browning was named the ADGA Member of the Year and it was well deserved. He didn't need to take this on to make friends ( he has plenty ) or to occupy his time ( he's a responsible young father like our Open Champ ). He did it cause he knows we've got something special here and it's worth continuing the effort. Thanks and Congrats, Greg. I'm really glad you've stepped up.

Ace Golf in the oaks is like putt-putt disc golf. It's 18+ holes of 150' shots where ACES only count. If there's $200 in the kitty and and there's 10 aces, each ace is worth $20. It's an ADGA tradition at the Club Championships and VPO. You'll love it!

Okay my friends...we are getting entries everyday now, and I just want to remind you all that the fields are limited. The Pros are alloted 45 spots and about 24 of those are taken. The Ams are getting 55 spots and about 20 of those are gone. The Rec div. are limited to two cards of four and we have six spots left.

arlskipshot1
Oct 20 2008, 10:03 PM
Should things continue like this we will allow the Pros to take some Am spots, but not vice versa. We would love to accomodate everyone but that's tough on one course. With 100 players there would be foursomes on every card and one ghose card. Our experience helps us to see what we need to do to speed things along, but it still works out to a long Sat.
Sunday will be easier on you, the player.

There will be custom-stamped Millennium discs, but I do not think there will be any SuperSoft Omegas. We will have Sirius Omegas for certain.

We did order 25 ea of Sirius Omega, QMS, and Sirius Orion LF.

The presence or absence of SuperSofts depends on Millennium's decision on what to send us for the tournament sponsorship package.

Ok....the man of the year, Greg B, and I have assessed the situation and it's looking unbelievably tight. If you're not already in, then you should make your decision and get busy. We are allowing some of the touring pros to reserve spots right now and we're pretty certain they will show up. This means we only have 7 pro spots and 7 am spots left to fill the 100 strong field. Once this is filled we will take names on the waiting list should someone not show or withdraw.
Player's meeting 8:30 sharp with first round starting at 9:15. The time change happens Sat. night so if you mess up you'll be an hour early for Sunday's round and short one hours sleep your opponent will have on you. That round will also start at 9:15.

We are down to a total of 13 spots available--only 5 spots left for amateurs. As soon as the Am spots fill, we will start a waiting list, and if the other spots are not taken by pro players, we will open up the remaining spots to the ams in order of the wait list.

Yes, boys and girls, it is true, we have been taking entries from Titledisc, Greg B., and myself and until we gather info to see our status this evening, we must take names and numbers on a waiting list. I'm fairly certain there will be a few spots that will come open, but if you can't wait till Thurs. evening to find out if you're playing or not, you might need to make other plans, sorry. There are still a few spots for some top Pros that thought they were going to be here, but I'm still waiting for conformation.

'bout time to make this a two weekend event again... the name of it is Veterans Park OPEN after all... I do not know how many of these traveling pros are going to show up. It does seem a shame someone willing to put their money upfront to play in the OPEN division 5 days in advance would not get to play just to make sure there are enough slots available for those travelers. Title disc only shows 50 some players signed in. Don't you think one looking at that list would think there were plenty slots still available.

I know this will be a great event for all that get to play.

I will put that list up tonight. The PDGA functionality was not restored until this past weekend, so that is why it is not there. As for any complaints--all I can say is that the event has been available for registration on Titledisc for over a month and there was ample time for planning ahead. This event fills every year and fills fast.

I just think it is pretty obscure not to have an up to date list of registered (to so called registered) players.. I was willing to give my money. But I will wait to see if there are enough slots left after all the preferred players get theirs...

Just sour grapes I guess...

Well then again many would ask why some A-tiers like this have combined Am/Pro? Also the Touring Pros are supposed to have spaces reserved up until like a week before the event.

I didn't have a clue it was anywhere near full so I guess I won't be going even though I planned on it. Sorry I haven't looked on here until today but I normally look on the now nonexistent schedule.

Seems like you can't just worry about one event at a time but you have to fork over 3-4 entry fees at one time to get into the events.

Many people don't know why the VPO is a combined A/B. For many years, it was the biggest event in the state and among the top 5 in the country for payout, but times got tough and people stopped coming, and the ADGA stopped being good at getting sponsors and added cash. The pro and am weekends were combined a few years ago to help fill an event, as it costs more than just the PDGA sanctioning to run an event. Just for this weekend alone, not counting merchandise, we spent well over $1000 before collecting a single entry. Run an event over two weekends, and you can double it.

That said, because of the enormous response the ADGA tournaments have gotten over the past 18 months, we will be splitting the VPO back to 2 weekends starting next year.

As for the reserved spots, with the outage of the PDGA web site, we were trying to allow a little more time for people to get in contact with us before we gave away any spots.

The following is not directed at you, Matt, or anyone in particular, so don't be offended, but I think a few things need to be made clear: Being a TD is not easy, and it is not necessarily fun. With a few exceptions around the country, we do not have any financial gain out of running events. We do it so that people around us will have a great time and a memorable tournament. I think everyone who is moaning and complaining about the way things have or are being handled needs to think twice about alienating the very people who are providing them a huge service at no charge. I, for one, think Skip runs a top-notch event. I would not have been able to put on such a good Fahrenheit Fling without his help.

Here we go! It's the VPO! It's back and bigger and better than you have seen it in a long time.

Players meeting is at 8:30 Saturday morning. First round will start at 9:15. Sunday's round will start at 9:15 also.

$4000+ added cash to the pro purse
$750 guaranteed ace pot

If you have not paid your entry fee yet, you really need to make sure you pay either Wednesday night to me after the mini or Friday afternoon to Skip or myself during doubles. If you can't make it either of these times, but absolutely will be playing, you must be there EARLY on Saturday to get paid in.

We have a great field of players in the Pro divisions, and a very strong Amateur field.

Notwithstanding players from the list dropping out, we have 104 players entered.

man... that's tough. Sprout is also my favorite for #1, but I think JD (if he gets in), Barry (if he's still coming), Jay, Nolan, Hero, Coda and Miles will give him a run for his money. One thing's for sure... this isn't going to be an easy fight for anyone :)

It looks like Barry and Jay won't be able to make it. JD Ramirez will take one spot and we have a lady from Dallas to accompany our Rec Wmn entry from Illinois for the other spot.
Since Barry is out of the mix, my predictions are Coda squeezing it out from Eric and Brice "I'm for real and so is my" Longerbone in a tie for third with your's, mine, and everyone's hero, club champion, lil Johnny Miauro.
Sorry Nolan, but new daddy and karma seems to be alot to overcome to get that killer end stinks, but nothing would make me happier than you getting that $1300+check.
In any case this should be a good one.

Round 1 - All concrete tees, all permanent baskets short plus 6 temp holes (which are marked as of noon today)

Round 2 - All concrete tees except Championship 15 will be used. Some baskets will have been moved between rounds. same 6 temp holes

Round 3 - Concrete tees for most,all baskets long (I think) Championship 2, 8, 12, 16, 17, 18. 6 temp holes (Championship tee on 17B)

The temp holes
12A: tee box east of 13's concrete pad to a basket under the mesquite tree between the backstops

12B: tee box north and east of 12A's basket to a basket in 20 feet in front of the flowerbed wall in the front corner of the park

12C: tee box south of 12B's basket to a basket in the treeline about 50 feet short of the parking lot

13: all weekend hole 13 will tee from a temp tee box near the sidewalk

17A: along the sidewalk east of 17's long pin up the hill to a basket near the restrooms

17B: tee box behind the restrooms playing down the hill to a small green protected against the treeline

17C: tee box behind the stage, tunnel shot to a basket about 25 feet short of the sidewalk

Skip will have a handout Saturday detailing pin positions and tee pads for all three rounds
