I have talked with Pat today. I have agreed to be the TD for the 2008 event. We have not yet agreed upon a name for the event this year as the format is still up the air.

It is very possible that this event could be played at both Tupelo Bay and Harbor View.

The only way we will be able to do this is if we can fill 2 fields of 72. We will need to fill the fields at least 1 month before the event.

The entry fee will be $100 per player (PayPal will be $105).

Mike Norris (I can't thank him enough for all he does for us in this region) will have the PayPal link up for us by Monday night of the coming week.

If anyone has any questions please email me at:

As Kirk has said he will be the TD for the 2008 event I will be the Co-TD. Tupelo Bay has committed to having us back on the second weekend of December once again (December 13th and 14th). I am looking into the possibility of adding a second course (Harbor View) to the event and should know next week if it is a go.

-When I first started the event I had always hoped to create a made for DVD round of 4-5 top pros playing the course. Preferably on the Friday / Night before the tournament. Invite the public out to the course to walk around or rent a cart and watch the action. Would you be interested is watching this action? Or would you rather be out on the course playing?

-I have always wanted to create a tradeshow atmosphere where disc golf companies and vendors gathered to do business without being during a MAJOR disc golf event. Have companies send players and representatives to Myrtle Beach for the week to get pictures and video for the new year marketing. Matt Peckham of Innova has been doing this for the last 3 years. Many pictures that Innova uses in the brochures, marketing programs, and electronic communications uses photos that were shot at Tupelo Bay each year in December. The weather is typically quite nice and the course is in terrific condition. If you know of someone who is interested in getting involved with this opportunity please email [email protected] or [email protected] We will be providing a variety of sponsorship packages and pro-shop space for you to should off your goods.

Some people may remember the Harbor View Challenge I hosted in Little River SC in 2006. Most dont know it but that course is the sister course of Tupelo Bay and is owned by the same people. Harbor View is a great course and can be set out into a very difficult layout. Little River is about 30 minutes North of Tupelo Bay. What I am getting at is that we could potentially host a huge event using both courses. Harbor View even has an onsite Sleep Inn hotel, putt putt course and many amenities and beaches close by. The entire disc golf course is well lit until 11:00pm. I also hosted a distance competition on the driving range at night under the lights. That could possibly happen again as well. Billy Crump are you out there?

Do you think we could get 120+ people to travel to Myrtle Beach 2 weeks before Christmas? The tournament has typically had between 50 and 80 players. These numbers are encouraging for the managers of Tupelo Bay but larger numbers are needed to get them to continue to invite us back and worth it to throw a second course into the mix.
You have heard about this event for the last few years and the stories continue to roll in. Lets take this event to the next level!

There has always been quite a bit of concern about discs making marks on the ball golf greens, but time has shown that for the most part disc golfers have little to no negative impact to the course or putting greens. The design at Tupelo Bay has very few holes that you would want to throw a thumber off the tee, but I may be wrong. Schweb can you elaborate? It has been my experience that if a disc does spike straight into the putting surface it can be repaired the same as a golf ball mark using a small tool available at all golf pro shops. I handed them out at one of my events. Remove the disc, use the mark tool to pry up the damaged / compacted area and then gently step on the area to try to reform the grass to how it was.
Greens are O.B. just dont hit them.
Thats me in the orange shirt behind Toomes ripping the drive in the DGU ad. Good times for sure!

Jul 20 2008, 08:22 PM
I dont throw many thumbers out there. The few that I do, the greens should not come into play at all. Any spiking shots thrown towards baskets should not be in any danger of going near many of the greens. but maybe that is just me.

Jul 21 2008, 11:12 PM
maybe this could be one of those special purpose events, where the PDGA grants a higher status because of economic impact... or, in this case, just an awesome tournament at an odd time of year. I would think it would be a good time to look for sponsorship, since there's very little in terms of competing events (both for PDGA players, and also in the local community). Could help to elevate this into an even bigger status event. The last A Tier of the year. With the first event of the year in Vegas, let the last be in Myrtle Beach. A great way to wrap the year.

Get some PDGA staff to help run it. They are only a few hours away... Hand the paperwork off for them to handle.

I would think an A Tier in Myrtle would pull a lot of good players from around the country, where a B Tier would pull a lot from around the region, but maybe not enough to fill 2 courses.

this is what i personally would like to see Disc Golf get away from. bolster the payout with sponsors added cash not player's playing for each others entry.

I will probably be there this year, I was sad to miss it last time. I am always willing to help out with some of the paperwork and what not, but i will be playing as well!

I would suggest the A tier if you want to draw that many people to the beach, that close to the Holidays. Its really not that much different than a B tier aside from the added cash requirements. If there is enough sponsorship it shouldn't be a problem.

johnbiscoe
Jul 22 2008, 04:12 PM
in my experience running events from weeklies to a-tiers, it is hitting folks up for sponsorship that is by far the most loathsome task. the other logistics don't differ greatly from one event to the next.

rob, while i am happy to see your enthusiasm for running your event and gladly welcome another committed td to the ranks- i submit that once you have done it a few times raising that type of cash gets to be a real pain in the buTT.

I've only played this tournament one time. I don't care if you make it an A, B, C tier or non-sanctioned, I will never miss this tournament. I do think that you would have a hard time filling 2 courses.

I've never been a TD. I think you would have a hard time raising enough money for a tournament that is so close to Christmas. Especially if you go after local sponsorhip, December is off season.

I'm playing either way. Kirk, if you decide to take on the task of making this an A-Tier, you can count me in for a hole sponsorship.

BTW, did Paypal open yesterday or is that next Monday 7/28?

Richard

Captain
Jul 23 2008, 09:09 AM
Mike is running a little behind with getting the registration up. He should be able to get it done soon.

I do like the idea of an A-tier but raising that kind of money can be difficult. Also, very little of the entry fees for this event go to the purse. Because of greens fees and cart fees most of the entry fees go to the course. If we do get to use both Tupelo Bay and Harbor View then those fees will double.

Jay, thank you for your offer of a hole sponsorship. I wish I could get everyone that was coming to this event to make that kind of committment. Then it would be easy to hit the added cash requirement for an A-tier.

I have always thought it would be a neat concept to have every player find a local business (from their hometown) that would be willing to sponsor and advertise at a tournament.

If this event filled and everyone brought in 1 $25 sponsorship we would have $3,600 added cash.

Should we put an additional PayPal link for $25 sponsorship for the event?

Richard
Jul 23 2008, 09:15 AM
Sounds good to me. If people want an A-Tier then put it in there hands. Personally, I would accept sponsorhip moneys and make it a better paying B-Tier. I don't know all the rules so this may not be allowed. How many big names do you think we could draw down to Myrtle Beach 2 weeks before Christmas? Even as an A-Tier I still don't think you could fill 2 courses.

One round of Tupelo. To see which team tees first, one round of Flipcup. On every third hole, another round of Flipcup, each Flipcup victory is worth 1 stroke. winner is team who shoots low score... round score - Flipcup wins.

1. Odds are that there will be frost and they will not allow us on the course until it thaws (around 10am)
2. You would have to get rid of the lunch hour.

I could be wrong, but I don't remember having to wait on any frost last year. I also think we would've had time for 2 rounds of 18. Didn't we play 27, 18, 27 last year? I know we cut the second round short but we got atleast 9 holes in.

True, we didn't wait on frost last year, but I know we did in '06. Basicly, I'm stating that we need to have a lot of things go our way for 2 rounds/day on the exec.

I agree with the idea of lunch on the course. Just give the last card long enough to visit the car and go to the bathroom while the TD shuffles the cards.

Last year, we did play 18 for the second round. (back 9 and Par 3 becuase they were lit)

2 rounds of 18 Saturday all Executive (shotgun).
1 round of 27 Sunday - entire course with tee times. However, I would like to start on the short course so the tournament doesn't end there.

Nothing cooler than watching the lead card in a golf cart.

Lunch is served at 1:00 from a cart (or 2) that deliver them around the course. That would make lunch easy, and people can easily eat and play and drive.

You can even pack your own favorites on the cart in case you are hungry during the round. It's a cart and there are lots of storage options on them.

06 was pretty freakish cold. I seem to remember.

Open Pro, Open Womens, Open Masters, Advanced. These should be the divisions.

If you don't think you can compete in these divisions, you probably will slow the play up. This is a tournament that really needs to run efficiently.

Anybody disagree with me?

CAP Advanced entry to 33% of field until the last 2 weeks. This allows pros to fill the field but still allows for local and regional players to come if the field does not fill completely. Last year we had 33 Open, 1 Open woman, 26 advanced, and 4 Advanced Masters. Some of the Pro Masters merged into the Open field. We should be able to fill this tournament this year. We only missed filling by 8 last year. We can round up a lot more pros if we do a Frizzak Open call to arms. You on it this year, Sjur?

100% incorrect.

The Competition Manual states that "Consumption of alcohol or use of any illegal substance
from the 2-minute warning until the players scorecard is
submitted" is a DQ in any B Tier or higher. This will be a B Tier or higher.

There is another part that also adds in the part on areas where it is illegal such as parks, however for this tournament, the alcohol rule only applies from the 2 min warning until the card is turned in.

And getting that rule to be revoked not only will not happen, is a terrible idea. We already had idiots last year being drunk and driving on the greens and we don't more idiots doing the same. Alcohol only helps to increase situations like this.

I haven't chimed in yet because I have been very busy at work. However, I have read everyones posts because I have this thread set to email me every time a new post appears.

We are considering using both Tupelo and Harbour View for this event. The details have not been worked out yet. Please keep the ideas flowing. This event is for the players. If you want something ask for it. If I can I will try to pull it off for you.

I will check with Mike and see when we will have the PayPal link up. I thought it was already done.

If everyone that wants to play in this event came up with an additional $100 (preferably from a sponsor) the payout would be that much better. One of the issues with this event is that at least half (if not more) of the entry fee goes to the course.

If we don't use both courses I would like to play 3 rounds of 18 at Tupelo all on the executive course. The time constraint last year happened because we tried to play 2 rounds of 27 in one day. We could play 2 rounds of 36 on the executive course without a break on Saturday and then 1 round of 18 on Sunday.

Please keep the banter going and let your friends know how cool this event is.

shotgun Sunday = done sooner. OR do it MSDGC style. Shotgun for everyone but the lead 5 groups of Open. They get tee times, allowing the rest of the field some time to finish and watch after they are done.

Tee at 9:30
Group 5 tees at 9:40
Group 4 at 9:50
Group 3 at 10:00
Group 2 at 10:15
Group 1 at 10:30.

That gives everyone some time to build up a gallery for the last few holes.

All about the fun, all about the players, if you want it, most likely team Tupelo can provide. My thought from day one was to provide an event to celebrate the end of the disc golf (and calendar) year. Eat, drink, throw discs, and cruise around in carts. If I could eliminate the formal competition end of things, send everyone home happy, and with a bunch of disc golf goodies that exceeded their entry cost I would be a happy man. Kirk has most graciously stepped up again to TD the event so I personally can Eat, Drink, Throw Discs, and Cruise around in a cart (also I too busy at work right now and wanted to see the event continue). I have agreed to be the host of festivities and will be happy to provide many different events that the PLAYERS want to include. What do you want?

We have been approved to use the Harbour View course if we want but I fully understand if people do not want to drive the 30 minutes to Little River. And the logistics of juggling an additional course (30 min away) adds mucho stress to those who put the event on. In the end the format is up to Kirk. 3 rounds of 18 obviously is the choice of most. Adding the par 3 course has advantages and disadvantages to course flow and scoring. So if people just want to play the REAL deal Tupelo Bay executive course and skip the par 3 thats fine with me. Again its Kirks choice.

Over the last few years the price negoatied with Tupelo Bay was pretty much all-inclusive from Sat. morning until we were done on Sunday. I am fairly confident that will hold true and will allow players to use or play on the par 3 courses as they wish for practice or after rounds. If we wanted, we could most likely hold a distance event on the lighted driving range at night. The putt putt course is typically shut down for this time of year and I not sure what it would take to get the use of that, but I will check.

Anyways, just a few thoughts! Glad to see so many people continue to see the value of this event, and I would encourage anyone who has not attended, to book their disc golf vacation soon! See you at the beach! Thanks again to Kirk Yoo for pulling this together and watch for more details as they are worked out.

The Dunes Village Resort has a great special going on right now through Jan 1st on rooms. 2 br. 2 bath full kitchen ocean view for $99. per night. Single rooms with kitchen for as low as $39. Oh yea, they also have 2 indoor water parks. I've stayed here before. This is a nice resort. Just booked the room, bringing the fam. Never played the course but I've heard great things about this tournament.

To steep for me. Looks like a nice place though. Anybody know of some other places close to the course. Something cheaper than this, but better than the Viking?

The resort is around 52nd ave. I'm not sure where the course is. I received the offer on the room by email and booked it that way for 99 per night 2br 4qu. I get special offers all the time from them. If you go directly to there website, you will not get the discounted rate. However, you can try calling. If anyone is interested, send me an email and i'll email you back the offer. I just did the same for my brother and it worked for him. [email protected]

Thanks for getting the info up Kirk.

1 round of 36 on Saturday? We aren't breaking it up into two rounds?

This thing needs to fill!

Captain
Oct 31 2008, 11:19 AM
In order for us to get 2 rounds in before dark we decided that we would play 1 round of 36 with no "formal" break.

However, you will (as a group) be allowed to take an informal break at the club house. You will be able to do this as you reach either holes 1 or 10 depending on what the entire group agrees to doing. You are encouraged to buy lunch from the club house. They are supposed to have the grill going.

Because you will be allowed to take an informal break groups will be allowed to play through. Please keep in mind that if you do take a break you will need to keep it as short as possible so that you do not hold up the entire field at the end of the day.

You will also be allowed to have beer while you are on your break. Beer will be limited to the club house and patio area only. Beer will not be allowed on the course or in your cart at any time. If you are seen with any alcohol on the course or in your cart you will be immediately DQ'ed. Please do not be the first person to be disqualified by me.

How are you going to fit 96 players onto 18 holes on Saturday. Are we going to have some six-somes? I think that may actually work with the informal berak, but I wasn't sure if that was your intent.

Captain
Oct 31 2008, 11:55 AM
The only way we will have six somes is if there is an odd number of groups.

I doubt it will be an issue as this event has never come close to filling. The average number of entries for this event has been 62.

If it does fill you can rest assured that I have a plan.

Kirk,

Each group is assigned 2 carts, so a foursome has 2 carts (2 seaters, no seats on the back), If we have 5 somes I would assume 3 carts to that group, so in that case your wife would be able to ride, in a foursome not really. Last year they did have extra carts available for a nominal fee.

I'm sorry I haven't kept up with the questions out here.

Jay,

If the field fills there will be no additional carts for spectators. If we don't fill the field any carts not assigned to groups will be available for rental from the Pro Shop.

Not that I don't want your wife there but I am hoping we fill the field.

Sjur,

Yes this is a PDGA sanctioned event. It will be a B-tier. I am awaiting an answer from the SC State Coordinator but I believe at this point it is just a formality as there are no conflicting events that I am aware of at this time.

Everyone else,

We are working very hard to get a film crew there to produce another Clash video. If anyone knows of any company that would be willing to sponsor and be advertised on the video please let me know. We are looking for 4 companies to sponsor $250 each. If we can get these sponsors at least one week before the event we will have another Clash video filmed at the Tupelo Golf Center.

This is incorrect, there will be a Clash regardless. This was just a misunderstanding between Billy and Kirk. There is no sponsorship opportunity for this Clash Video.

There is sponsorship opportunity for internet coverage of the Tupelo Bay event.......just like the US dubbs coverage that was posted on [email protected]

Kirk, thanks for pulling the event together! Confused or not the 2008 Tupelo Bay Open owes its current existence to you! Your time and effort are most appreciated!

Anything involved with the Clash DVD and related exposure is a great way for sponsors to get their name into the disc golf market. Just got off the phone with Mr. Crump and Im excited to see the Clash Family make their way to the Tupelo Bay Open. The Clash DVD series / website coverage are cutting edge disc golf promotion and a proud representation of the game. The additional coverage that Billy and his Team would like to provide for the event is the play by play action of the event itself. As I understand it, the actual Clash video will be shot in the days before the actual TBO. BUT the added coverage (which could be sponsored by you or your company) would be marketed as an internet coverage / sponsorship deal. Throw down $250 bucks and get you company onboard or lay down the entire $1000 and cover the project yourself. Lay down $1000-$5000 and you can pretty much own the marketing plan.

Any suggestions to course design changes are welcome. The course has always played golf putting greens out of bounds and sand traps in bounds. All cart paths, path and beyond, or 3 fairways over is still in bounds unless determined unplayable. Only 2 holes have o.b. due to the fact that they either play towards an offsite development or thick swamp area. Got an idea you think would be better? Lets hear it?

When I designed this course I wanted to create a course that people would find fun to play and could be creative to find a shot that works for their game.
Peckham was the 1st person (lefty) who I saw throw hole #7 tee shot across the lake to the #4 fairway for the backdoor route. Nice!
Anyways Im sure I will come up with a few more tweaks for the 2008 event. I hope to be setting the course up on the Tuesday before (12/9) and ready to play the back nine under the lights Tuesday night.
Ohio, Oregon, and then Surfside, SC in the coming weeks. Its on!!!!!

The only hole I think might be better is 16 on the right side of the green near the woods. but that's more of a lefty shot. It's a little boring in it's current position.

I know there are a lot more than 15 players that want to play this event.

Please, please, please preregister. It makes my job a lot easier if you do. Also, if this event fills we will actually have more sponsorship money added to the purse. Tupelo Bay has committed additional funds to us if we fill the field.
