Rules we have used for the last 3 years for both courses:
Kirk will decide which rules will be the same for this year. I'm guessing all?
-All lakes on the course are out of bounds.
-All cart paths on the course are in bounds.
-Discs that come to rest in a tree will be played directly below with NO stroke penalty.
-All Ball golf putting greens are Out of Bounds. Disc must be completely on the putting surface. An example will be given at the players meeting.
-All sand traps will be In Bounds without penalty.
Executive Course Special rules
-Hole #1 any disc that crosses into the driving range (line drawn between farthest left trees) Is considered out of bounds and will require a 1 stroke penalty.
-Hole #4 special Out of Bounds Any tee shot coming to rest in the swamp just off the tee will be Out of Bounds and will be a 1 stroke penalty. Re-tee from the Red tees further up the fairway.
-Any shot that crosses the left side of the cart path (path in bounds, left side out) on Holes #4 and #13 are considered out of bounds and will require a 1 stroke penalty. Play from where the disc went out of bounds.
Par 3 Course Special Rules
-Hole #2 Any Disc coming to rest in the Bi-Lo parking lot is Out of Bounds Take a 1 stroke penalty and play from where the disc went out of bounds.
-Hole #3 Any disc coming to rest in the road is Out of Bounds Take a 1 stroke penalty and play from where the disc went out of bounds. Hole #3 also has a mandatory which requires a shot left of the marked tree. A shot missing the mandatory will require a 1 stroke penalty and a re-tee until each time the mando is missed.
-Hole # 9 any disc coming to rest in the road is Out of Bounds and will require a 1 stroke penalty. Play from where the disc went out.

MTL has reminded me of one of the funniest phone calls I have dealt with in a very long time. This is from last year:
This is the kind of stupidity TD's have to deal with:
A player leaves a message on my cell phone. I call him back. Here is the conversation:
Player: "How long is the drive from Washington D.C. to Garden City SC?"
Me: "I don't (expletive) know. I have never driven from Washington to Garden City."
Player: "Is it right off from I-95?"
Me: "Not even close."
Player: "Oh, so Garden City is in the Mountains?"
Me: "No, do you know where Myrtle Beach is?"
Player: "No. How far is it from Durham?"
Me: "About 3 hours. How did you get my name and phone number and how did you find out about the tournament?"
Player: "From the PDGA website."
Me: "Oh, so you have a computer?"
Player: "Yeah, I have a computer."
Me: "So why don't you go out to the (expletive) internet and type in Garden City on (expletive) MapQuest?"
That is an actual conversation that I had with a player while I was driving to Charleston this past Friday night.

Just a few things that may help people who are thinking about travel and accommodations for the 2008 Tupelo Bay Open:
-If you escaping the cold weather from other places in the US, and want to fly to the event, know that the Myrtle Beach airport is about 4 miles from the course. A quick taxi ride will get you on the course in about 15 minutes. Many of the hotels will pick you up from the airport and take you to your room.
-The course is actually located in Garden City, SC which is about 10 miles south of Myrtle Beach. When traveling from MB go south on HWY 17 towards Charleston, SC. Garden City and Surfside hotels are all located within 2 miles of the course. Feel free to call Tupelo Bay at 1-843-215-7888 if you get lost or need other related info.
-This is one of the best times of year to score a deal on a hotel, house, or condo. There area many hotels located just a few miles from the course and as close as 1 mile. The Surfside Days Inn has been the preferred hotel the past few years and offers beach front high-rise rooms at the foot of the Surfside Pier. I will call and set up a deal for anyone wanting to stay here. I think it was $49-$59 in the past.
A few restaurants and drinking establishments (swanky night club, pub, and hotel lounge) are within crawling distance of your room.
If you are looking to come in style there is pretty much any level of room / house you could want. A room that goes for $150 per night (on season) could easily be $80 this time of year, a house that rents for $800 for the weekend on season may rent for $400 this time of year. Any of the major hotels located in Garden City or Surfside that are beachfront will be pretty empty this time of year. Although the Viking is already legendary among some of the Tupelo Bay players, there are loads of other places to stay closer to the course and much closer to the pink pony and the course. If you are looking for dirt cheap look for a hotel located in Myrtle Beach and away from the beach front.
-A Large grocery store is located directly next to the course (BI-LO). Beer runs, food, and course essentials are literally 200 from the parking lot of TB.
-Quite a few restaurants and a liquor store are located within a few hundred feet of the course.
-If you have extra time and plan on staying the week, look for low greens fees on all of the golf courses and discounts on tourist items.
-The last few years the weather has been really nice during the event weekend. Typically in the morning we are under a frost delay which means they do not want people walking on the grass while there is a light frost covering. Warming up and waiting for the frost to melt has landed the start time close to 10:00am. However after the frost lifts and the warm layers come off, the afternoon is warm and glorious (approaching shorts and tee-shirt weather). Rolling in the golf cart allows loading on an arsenal of gear to handle whatever the weather throws at us. Plentiful sunshine has been the norm over the last few years!
The CLASH AT TUPELO BAY will be the next DVD filmed for the series in the days before the event. Come watch some of the top pros battle it out for the title and also play a few practice rounds on this championship course. If you know of a business or person that may be interested in sponsoring the event or dvd project contact Kirk Yoo at the contact/registration info listed above or Billy Crump at www.clashdvd.com. (http://www.clashdvd.com.)
The local news station will be filming a segment at the event to be aired in the Myrtle Beach area as a program. This should be great exposure for the area and the sport.

Richard
Dec 08 2008, 04:00 PM
Why are you done with disc golf?
MTL21676
Dec 08 2008, 04:33 PM
I've been traveling all over VA NC SC and other places for 4 years now. I've played close roughly 115 PDGA events in that time. I'm just kinda tired ot it....
I just want to do something new in life. I have already started new hobbies and new things and am enjoying them.
I'll still run my typical 2 events next year and I'll probably play a PDGA event once a month, but I will not be playing like I used to.
2009 for me will be only at events I enjoy. Basically, if I ain't playing it, there is a reason why. I'm just sick of bad events b/c I know so many of them are great and I know how easy it is to make an event work.
Richard
Dec 08 2008, 04:41 PM
Based on that explanation. Why, in you opinion, is the Tupelo tournament a bad event? Just curious.
MTL21676
Dec 08 2008, 04:47 PM
This event is not a bad one by any means. Kirk and staff did a fabulous job last year.
I just don't enjoy play disc golf on golf courses. The only reason I came last year was b/c I needed one more cash to get above 2,500 in winnings for the year and get my 09 card, which was a goal I had set for myself.
Had that goal not been set / wasn't possible to reach / had already been accomplished, I would not have attended.
I do not believe disc golf should be played on golf courses b/c I do not feel there is much of challenge when playing this style of golf. I certainly understand that most people enjoy this and I certainly understand why, its just a personal preference thing. That fact that I finished 2nd last year does not increase / decrease my enjoyment of the course. With the exception of a few holes (1, 4, 12, 17 on the executive and 3 extended on the 9 shorter holes), I found most of them very boring. I don't get excitement taking my distance disc and throwing it as far as I can. I enjoy more techinical courses and techinical shots where I can work a midrange or a slower speed driver.
I would recommened this event to anyone, however. It is a great event and is a lot of fun - just not my thing.

Fair enough. I like shorter technical courses as well. I do think that the future of this sport will be played on more courses like Tupelo. With all of the advancements in disc technology and all the younger players attracted to this sport, we will need bigger courses to contain them.
I don't remember what every hole at Tupelo looks like, but I do remember throwing my beat firebird on most of them. There are courses out there that are much longer than Tupelo.
Thanks for your comments and opinions. Your first explanation led me to assume you weren't playing because you didn't like how the tournament was ran. I thought that it went pretty well last year. With the exception of the moron riding his cart on the green. Oh and Kirk having many out of body experiences.
Anyway, the countdown has started. I'll be leaving the ATL in exactly: 69 hours and 32 mins. I think?
skaZZirf
Dec 09 2008, 10:54 AM
I love the shot variation. Just because the hole is big doesnt limit the shot choice. On varying holes you'll see rollers, big air shots, and placement lay-ups. If there was not water on every hole or a well placed basket near a green I would agree. Only one hole out there i disagree with. Hole 16 is nothing more than a deuce or die. If the basket was shifted to the right side of the green, maybe tucked into the woods, it would change everything. As it stands, the hole plays 4 minutes for a foursome, yielding a 2.3 average. Other than that, the course is perfect, IMO.
MTL21676
Dec 09 2008, 11:42 AM
I wouldn't say perfect as I think a few more holes needed a little tweaking (like 8, 11, 13, 16 and 18) but I would agree it is a great conversion course - by far the best of the 4 or 5 I've played.
bgwvdave
Dec 09 2008, 11:54 AM
I like shorter technical courses as well.
Courses don't have to be short to be Technical. while i aggree with MTL that for some people this course is not that exciting. that is kinda how i fill seeing as my longest shot tops out at 350' maybe. i prefer woods golf to these types of courses but that does not mean i don't like conversion courses as well. diversity is the spice of life.

While I love seeing a ROC pure a tight woods gap, what I really love is seeing a big arm bomb, full flight crush, landing in a tight fairway and setting up for Roc(350ft) upshot over water. If this event was a $10 payout, I would still aTTend.

lol thats kinda what i was trying to say. that courses like this for players like you are different than for games like mine. 350' for me is not a Roc it is a S'd out driver with all i have. and who knows where it is going to land. where you have shot selection i throw as hard as i can 3 to 4 times and hope to have a putt.

Just like golf eveolved, disc golf continues to evolve. This type of course is about as TV Friendly as they get. If we want to get covered on TV, this is the type of golf that will attract viewers. Imagine how long you'd watch a par 3 tournament in golf. It just doesn't create much drama.
What I am surprised by, but not really, is that MTL did not think any of the mound placement holes were appealing. I think that's one of the best parts of this course. Holes 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, and 15 are all on mounds. that makes the putting game so much more important. It also makes skilled drives that much more impressive. Not only are you throwing a distance, but you have to take into account the lay of the land, a golf green that is OB, and going long even a little or short basically means it is a layup. I have watched a lot of rounds fall apart when discs were not close... and some that fell apart when they were real close. the mound holes put an emphasis on putting and strategy.
3 days.

I think that viewing discs in the air is the main appeal to TV audiences. So the longer the holes and the trickier the greens, the more entertainment for the viewing audience. While woods offer better skill tests, they do not translate to TV.
Executive course conversions really set up nice for video.

And what I'm not surprised by is you not reading what I said. Where did I mention 3, 5, 6 or 15 as bad holes? I said 8, 11, 13, 16 and 18.
Of the ones I said, the only one you mentioned as a response (which really wasn't a I respponse b/c couldn't have been responding to me b/c only 1/5 of the holes you felt I didn't like I mentioned) was 11. I didn't see many 2's on this last year b/c it was a good tug to get there. I thought this would be a bit better with a closer tee to increase score seperation and take out the "big arm" factor of this hole. The pin placement on this hole was great!

Marshall street videos are the best video's made. and why does a course in the woods have to be par 3's you live close to charlotte right?

The course is in superior condition. Most of the swamp areas have been trimmed close. I would expect this layout to play a stroke or 3 tougher than in years past.

Call 16 the logical position... Skazzirf Sjur suggested the exact same placement as I did. I think it'll improve the course.
See you Friday. Avery is excited.

1, 13 16 and 18 are good changes.
I think 11 was long enough and lengthening it is only to make it have worse score separation and make more of a big arm hole.
But overall, good changes!

11 is certainly a tricky hole. I may have birdied it a few times when it was in the valley. on the hump, it was always much harder. I may have gotten it once last year, but not during the tournament, I think.
that's a good one to have just past the green... so the green becomes more of an obstacle, and the hills as a stopping point would put you pretty far away from the basket.
But I accept Pat's changes. The course was excellent the first time I played it.

Words of advice to those playing... with Schweb going to 'hang out' and not playing this year dont get suckered into trying to hang with him all night... you can't hang with him on nights when he has to play in the morning then you def. can't when he's not and you are! :)

I don't have the D to play this one, but, am spanking myself for not taking the cupcake down so she can air it out a little. Now after seeing Billy's video of this, the beatings will soon commence. Looks like a family vacation next year, untill then, I must sit back and watch the video.
How much fun would it be to watch this one. Some cannons registered. My lead card prediction, Jeremy-Avery-Barry-Henry
I am still a pretty good Rec player :)

Awesome time. Four years I've never missed this one. More pros need to play this course. One of the best courses ever from a strategy and aesthetic standpoint.
This place could easily host an A tier or NT. Everything you could want they have or is within a short drive. Plenty of parking. A golf friendly media scene. Lots of lodging in a variety of price ranges. Golf carts. Sets up great for video coverage.
Thanks pat and kirk and stick and mike for letting us finish the season on the grand strand once more.

Thanks to Kirk and crew. I hope that this thing fills up next year. For those of you that didn't make it, you're a bunch of fools. There's no better way to end the disc golf year. This tournament was a blast, I'll be back as long as you have it.
Things run a lot better when Kirk doesn't have to scream. Thankfully there weren't many bozo's giving him a reason to.

I had an amazing week in the Grand Strand and always look forward to the 2nd weekend in December at Tupelo Bay. Avery was a true Champion who had all of the shots that this challenging course had to offer. See you at the beach next year?

Kirk, I wanted to say thanks again for the opportunity to play with Avery. I recently decided to start playing Open events. I truly hope that the player's I play with in the future have at least half of the class that Avery has. I was truly expecting to get the cold shoulder. I didn't think a top Pro would be happy playing with a rump like me. He's one of the nicest people I've ever had the joy of playing with. I hope that other up and coming pro's model there character after Avery. It's safe to see that he would be a perfect role model.
So thanks again Kirk and thank you Avery for the great time at Tupelo Bay.
