You have discovered my master plan! :o Just one more title sponsor to go and I will have my fourth thread.

Maple Hill Three will be the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and will probably feature round 1 on a shorter configuration and round 2 on the open layout.

Quick Quiz:

What do Ken Climo, Steven Rico, David Feldberg, Nathan Doss, Josh Anthon, JohnE McCray, Barry Schultz, and Avery Jenkins have in common?

(Other than the fact that none have them have been in my kitchen and being much better golfers than myself.)

Clue: Cale Leiviska and Markus Kllstrm are the only two of the top 10 rated disc golfers that have done this.

Answer:

None of them have beat New England Pros in big New England a tournament. And so far none have signed up to do so. How many spots left?

Green Mountain Open is the following weekend just 3-4 (?) hours away. How is this not worth the trip? Are there 2 closer NT events?

StevenDodge
Mar 17 2008, 01:02 PM
minor correction: feldberg, avery and barry have beaten some new england pros at the MSDGC in 05 & 06, but they have not beaten Aaron Ala - the up and coming Maple Hill star who helped to land the greatest sponsorship disc golf has ever seen! Bring it on Vibram boy!

And Aaron has been in my kitchen!

The Vibram Open at Maple Hill is now a sponsor of my tournament, The Raleigh Disc Golf Championship!

Steve Dodge and I have been disussing a way to cross promote our two events since we are on the same weekend.

We agreed the best way is to sponsor each other! I'm sending him merch from my tournament and he is sending merch from his.

This is a great thing I think as neither of us wanted to have our event on the same weekend.

Thanks Steve and whichever event you decide to play that weekend, have fun!

Glad you all are making it, bring your camp gear--it's MANDO and the only way to get the full Southwick Experience.

This is where I should mentioned Blaser's special talent, but should let it unfold spontaneously during the event. Maybe the loser of pie finals gets the treatment , Maybe the least number of made putts in that contest gets it  Maybe everyone who pats Pierre gets a shot of the Blaser :o

You all should plan on heading up the road to Vermont the next weekend to complete the best two weeks of competitive disc golf in 2008!

Yeti
Jul 08 2008, 08:38 PM
The Southwick's are always at the top of the "Host of the Year" ballot which is different than TD of the year.
So, in a sense there could be two awards coming to Marshall Street which would have to bring these two brothers from other mothers back together. (At least enough to let Jason change Dodge's kids diapers again, he misses that)

Someone asked what do they get at Pyramids for their $25 camping fee, and this is the question we've been so hesitant to answer.

I'll start the answer tonight. You get to feel like you're home.

And you get to play Pyramids for free. Please sign the waiver and write Camping. It's a nice little course.

Second, if you camp, please don't flick bottle caps, drop butts on the ground, or try to burn glass in the fire. I'd like to go on record here and say that absolutely everything else is allowed. Please speculate on what is allowed please. Hot tub is open to everyone,

The DDC lights work.

Did I mention the DDC lights work?

We welcome all of you. Pyramids role is different this year. Prime Dics and Marshall Street are vying for market share, which means we have moments of absolutely hating Steve Dodge just for being clever. And being possessed by the devil.

We decided long ago not to let Steve Dodge get between us and our friends, even if Steve Dodge is the whole reason so many of our friends are visiting Leicester at the end of the July. You see how complicated it gets?

We apologize for the pretty steep $25 camping fee, and the chainsaw amputations for those caught attempting to sneak in. If, at the end of the weekend, you feel you havent received your $25 worth, please let us know.

I think what Steve Dodge is doing is stoopid. Dont say I dont know what Im talking about. My wife Kelley and I and Lick helped run the MSDGC from 2004 to 2007. We always get the years mixed up. Thats four tournaments in three years, but somehow four years worth. It only took three years to run four MSDGCs.

Then I burnt out, cause my goals were different from Steve Dodges stoopid goal of giving all the money you raised the whole year to the best players who come to your tournament. And being famous and on television, or at least cable television, but still where does it come in that the tournament directors dont pay for the whole shebang?

Just to be clear, the splitting of 1st place cash in 2005 and 2007 after tying for 1st place after regulation? Horrifying. Were built the way were built and Kelley DOES say my world is black and white. We still love all those guys, just reserve our right to have strong opinions about things.

Theres one part of that strong feeling about the splitting thing. I learned how to raise money being Dodges partner. Ive now vowed to never add cash to a payout, putting the value elsewhere always. Dont mean to come down too hard on people, but that was enough for me to put my fund-raising efforts elsewhere.

Its my small way of saying your ARE accountable. Dont split again.

You lost a Steve Dodge-trained fundraiser. Just add a zero with a straight face, is all you gotta do. Move the decimal point over and exaggerate your importance and figure out how much money the guy youre talking to has discretion over.

Its like learning how to ride a bicycle; you have to do it once to get it forever.

Always wanted to make courses. Steve? He just wants to make one course. No one is everyone.

<font color="blue">[borderline personal attack removed] </font> Im a little bit of Mikey Kernan at the moment.

But two and a half weeks is a lot of time. You guys could get me out of it.

Please promise not to flip bottle caps and put glass in the fire. You have to see how perfect the DDC court is. Its completely perfect, and theres no reason the light should ever go out. Jay Reading did a sound test last year.

The Frizaks and Leslie were out of control a little, but around here thats how you leave with trophies.

Me? I really dont care how good you are at disc golf. I just like fun and friendly people. We especially like GOOD people, but that takes a little longer than a weekend to figure out. Wasnt meant to sound so harsh. We already know a bunch of good people who are coming. Its easy its complicated it depends how long youre willing to talk to us.

We do love you. Just not Steve Dodge. Okay a little but suppressed.

I got a warning from a PDGA Moderator. He said no more man-hugs if I keep skirting the verbal edge of propriety. Dang.

My post did get a little out of hand. I should probably institute a no more typing if one eye is closed rule.

Turns out I'm cross-eyed. Cross-eye AND take Adderall every day as prescribed by my HMO doctor. How do you think I can type this fast?

Just to reveal everything, it appears Kelley has Lyme Disease, judging from the red rash on maybe 10 percent of her body, debilitating headache on the whole top of the head down the back of her neck, chills followed by sweats and then more chills. I say "appears" because they gave her a test today and won't know till tomorrow. But her doctor said he thinks it's Lyme.

So anyway, because I started sounding a little too weenerish for Mikey in recent posts, occasionally giving up negative thinking, he started e-mailing me again. Hate mail on the surface, with every single way I'm a jerk and clueless. And the profanity! It's the kind of e-mail that, if posted in public, would warrant the death penalty. Even alluding to it could get me put on probation in a second -- especially since I'm already on pre-probation, as suggested by the anonymous "Board Moderator" who sent me the warning.

Anyway, the stuff that Mikey writes, and the pictures he posts with special captions, not to mention the nubile lasses in bikinis? That's great stuff. I can understand, however, that when the rule is no personal attacks, you gotta accept his banishment, even if he doesn't.

MarshallStreet
Jul 09 2008, 07:20 PM
So anyway, we'll be good hosts. The official tournament festivities, such as the banquet on Saturday, will be at Maple Hill, frisbee central.

Pyramids will be frisbee sub-central. Hang back no rules no schedule here. We won't be cooking huge tournament meals, but our grill will be available to anyone, and campfires will be allowed. Plus we will be cooking a bunch of smaller meals for whoever's around. If no kegs come through from sponsors we'll provide a couple.

We'll get a big huge dumpster, and if we're good, we'll have a clearly-labelled recycling center right in front of it.

Lick isn't coming. Someone else will have to shave heads.

The MSDGC evolved into the Vibram Open, in an unstoppable way driven by an unstoppable force.

Forty grand to be awarded right next door, in just a couple weeks. There are at least five emotions associated with that strong enough to make you want to hit your head against the wall.

I can't wait to see you all again, the year hiatus was a tough pill to swallow but when you get to meet our little STUD you'll understand.

For the record Jason, if I had known how you guys felt about splits I would have never considered it...it's just what was the norm on tour while I was out and about. I ended up with the worst of it obviously.

I'm going to miss not getting to play the Pyramids as part of the tourney, it carried me both years we were there, it will always be one of my favorites.... I can't wait to see you guys and hopefully try to complete our goal of getting a skip ace off the water and under the bridge on hole 5 at the Pyramids....we were very close last time we visited. ;) by the way I think we are still undefeated on that awesome DDC court ;) OKIE hyzer is a real beeeyatch to handle in DDC :D

I'm with MJ I hope there is a MSDGC comeback, both of ewes are AWESOME!!!!

Jason and Steve, send me a PM and tell me how you take your coffee.

Green Mountain Open comes with babysitting too.

You just strap junior's car seat on the Bravo Quad Chair Lift and he just rides up and down all day. No one can get futsy having that view all day. He can just let the bathroom fodder just fly right off, the mountain bikers like moguls :o

That's funny!!!! I wish and I will try and see if I can convince CP to stay that extra week. I don't know if the coffee shop will survive nearly 2 weeks without her though. If not this year I'm sure the coffee shop will be able to run itself next year. ;)

Thanks Steve Timm, Kelley does not have Lyme. She has a good doctor who didn't give her antibiotics, and last night she sweat about a gallon of sweat with delirium tremors. And today's she's good again.

Suddenly a healthy women. The doctor said "good," and "huh?"

That's a good doctor. They didn't try to kill her by curing an undiagnosed disease. Now better. Reminds me last year when Jerel had an impacted tooth and just didn't go to the doctor and people were pleading with him, "You're going to die Jerel. Go to the doctor."

No insurance may have been the deal. Anyway, right before Jerel dies of massive facial swelling cause he'a got a serious infection in his mouth, the puss ball bursts and he's good as new almost instantly.

Anyway, about a dozen people offered exotic painkillers from various countries. Kelley doesn't need any of them anymore, so there's one more thing we have. I wanna grind 'em up into a big powdery mix right now and toss 'em in a blender with some fresh fruit and monkey brains, but, heck, we can wait a couple more weeks.

*******************

By the way should we invite Gill? Does Gill terrify me? No. He terrifies other people, though, cause he gets too close when he talks. We tell him again and again. Gill, white people need three feet.

I got my hand up for the pro Gill vote, but let's create an imaginarily diplomatic process, or at least an open forum. Gill or no Gill? That is the question.

*********************************************
Kevin McCoy awesome post. You and Courtney will always be two of our favorites, but, let's be honest, you should have been peeing your pants way more on that 30-footer before you jumped into the pond.

Large Hazelnut with cream only please.

i rudely interrupt this thread for a beg-and-grovel post....

as Daniel Marcus so wonderfully mentioned a few posts ago, anyone at the Vibram Open that can possibly stick around for one more week should do whatever they have to do to head 3 hours north to gorgeous central Vermont for the 2008 Green Mountain Open August 1 thru 3.

TD Chris Mayone has done an absolutely fantastic job rounding up sponsors, to the tune of close to $16,000.

Assistant TD's Olander, Desch, and Doyle promise that this event will be one of the best events anywhere in the U.S. in 2008. For those of you that haven't had the North Calais experience, just ask the Readings, the Brinsters, and anyone else at the Vibram Open how awesome an experience North Calais is. TOP 5 on almost everyone's disc golf course list. It is a freak of nature.

The sponsor cash will go towards give-outs unlike anything you'll find elsewhere. Long-Sleeve Dri-Fit shirts; event logo Champion Monarchs and a Thursday nite clinic, both courtesy of MVP Healthcare; a gourmet lunch at North Calais and a kick-butt players party at Sugarbush with free food and all the Magic Hat beer you care to ingest; world-class scenery; swimming holes; chairlift rides; 3 fantastic courses that will challenge you and provide hours of fun; i mean come on, this is ridiculous....

and a cash purse in the A-Tier that is way above-average.

don't miss this event !!!!!!!

For the Vibram layout, which competitors will be playing all weekend, Par has been set to a score of 59. This score is an estimated 1020-rated round based on the layout, and all +/- To-Par references in the scores are based from that number.

Sorry, but I don't agree with this. I don't understand why one would set par for a 1020-rated round. You set Gold par for 1000-rated players or Blue par for 950-rated players. SSA was 62.8 (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=7290&amp;year=2008&amp;incl udeRatings=1#Open) and the scoring average for the entire field was 67.2.

I think it says everything that only FIVE players out of the entire tournament field (which includes EIGHTEEN 1000+ rated players!) are under "par."

sandalbagger
Jul 25 2008, 10:04 PM
I hear that Jeff. The par is definitely closer to 62. A little tweaking like western, pa and the course could be the best par 66 in the world!! I agree with the 1000 rated tee system as well.

The course is absolutely amazing though.

Steve, can you please note the pars which you've listed on your tournament website here:

http://www.maplehillopen.com/courses.html

which are based primary on scoring averages from the 2007 MSDGC:

Hole#1: Par 4
Hole#2: Par 3
Hole#3: Par 4
Hole#4: Par 3
Hole#5: Par 3
Hole#6: Par 4
Hole#7: Par 3
Hole#8: Par 3
<u>Hole#9: Par 4</u>
out: par 31

Hole#10: Par 4
Hole#11: Par 4
Hole#12: Par 5
Hole#13: Par 3
Hole#14: Par 3
Hole#15: Par 3
Hole#16: Par 4
Hole#17: Par 4
<u>Hole#18: Par 4 </u>
in: par 34

total: par 65

So if you've listed the course as par 65 on your tournament website, why are you now calling it par 59?!?

My top 5 are the following:

Highbridge Gold, Highbridge, WI
The Woodshed &amp; Whipping Post, Paw Paw, WV (both courses)
Warwick Town Park, Warwick, NY
Moraine State Park, Portersville, PA
Maple Hill, Leicester, MA

Knob Hill and Patapsco are both fantastic world class courses, but don't make my top 20.

ultimately it doesnt really matter... have a wide open hole thats only 200' and call it a par 5 if you want... it doesnt affect the scoring average and everyone is still playing the same hole.

I actually think its funny because I can see some Pros complaining since they might not be under par and are used to always beeing waaaaay under par.

cgkdisc
Jul 26 2008, 01:36 AM
It actually does matter on a hole by hole basis specifically when a round is based on tee times because you can tell how well a player is playing relative to others who have played a different number of holes. That is if you're looking at live scoring. No live scoring then par has marginal value as an end of round measuring stick. At that point round ratings have more interest and those are independent of par.

Jul 26 2008, 01:37 AM
here are some interesting holes from today though...

Hole 6 ... Par 3 (avg 4.08), no deuces, 14 pars, 25 bogies, 10 double bogies &amp; 3 triple or higher

Hole 12... Par 4 (avg 4.6), no deuces, 25 pars, 23 bogies, 4 double

17 also produces not deuces... the scoring spread looks terrible as well ... (par3, avg 3.56) with about 1/2 getting par and 1/2 bogie

cgkdisc
Jul 26 2008, 01:47 AM
For what it's worth, these were my notes to Steve last August based on the scoring info he provided. I think this is close to the same course being played but perhaps with some tweaks:

Hole 11 has a poor distribution with 78% 4s. Looks like it might be easier to make this hole easier and produce more birdie 3s. Hole 13 comes in with an adjusted average of 2.38 making it a little too easy for gold level. Not sure what your pars are but the stats indicate these holes would be par 4s: 1, 6, 7, 9, 11, 17 &amp; 18. Hole 12 would be a par 5. Hole 3 is a tweener hole that maybe could be tweaked easier or harder to make it a more solid par 4 or just a tough par 3 depending on what you wanted there. The SSA comes out to <font color="red"> 62.8 (sound familiar?)</font> so a total par of 63 or 64 fits nicely with the hole stats.

Hole#6 has OB running the entire right-hand side of the hole which is why the scoring average is artificially inflated. It's 435' long, but severely downhill. This hole has been deuced several times and I actually agree with Steve designating it a par 3 for the tournament.

Hole#12 plays 750 feet, first through a tunnel in the woods, then taking a hard dogleg right before finishing uphill for the final 250 feet. I've never heard of a single score of 3 here, and it really should be a pro par 5 which is what it was labeled last year. (It also produced a scoring average of 4.90 last year (http://livescoring.marshallstreetdiscgolf.com/roundstats.asp?rid=4))

Hole#17 is one that is clearly a pro par four. The hole plays 650 feet with a 90 degree dogleg after the drive! Really, with a forced placement shot because of the dogleg, this is the textbook definition of a pro par four hole.

FYI... on that note... here's a breakdown from the top 50 scorers for today...

http://08vo.primediscs.com/roundstats.asp?rid=1

Looking at these scoring averages, here is my revised breakdown for the current layout:

Hole#1: Par 4
Hole#2: Par 3
Hole#3: Par 3
Hole#4: Par 3
Hole#5: Par 3
Hole#6: Par 3
Hole#7: Par 3
Hole#8: Par 3
<u>Hole#9: Par 4</u>
out: par 29

Hole#10: Par 3
Hole#11: Par 4
Hole#12: Par 5
Hole#13: Par 3
Hole#14: Par 3
Hole#15: Par 3
Hole#16: Par 4
Hole#17: Par 4
<u>Hole#18: Par 4 </u>
in: par 33

total: par 62

Since SSA was 62.8, this would make a lot more sense. You'd also have 20 golfers under par at the top of the Open division which intuitively seems a lot more reasonable.
