Tee time will be 10:00 on Saturday and 9:00 on Sunday. Format will be the same as last year with divisional play followed by 2 teams from each division in playoffs. Tie breakers are head to head first followed by total individual wins, and thirdly holes remaining in individual wins.

The last place team from each division will play off against one another for the right to return in 2009. The loser of this match will be eliminated for 2009 and be placed back on the waiting list (likely 7-8 years). HHome Team and Team Spotsy are EXEMPT from this requirement. Should either of these teams finish last in their respective division the 5th place team will be placed in the elimination match.

Teams will consist of the following:
4 Open
2 Masters
2 Advanced (or pro with player rating beneath 955- see below*)
1 Lady

Ratings will be based on the late January update.

* Players registered with the PDGA as pros may play am at VTI up to the 955 cut-off. Players registered as ams may be of any rating. Players who have re-classified from pro to am will be subject to individual review. Players who have accepted cash in pro divisions and are rated above 955 will be ineligible regardless of reclassification.

6 of the 8 male players must be from the geographic area/course represented by the team or be grandfathered in by virtue of competing in VTI 2005.

Grandfathered Player List (only includes players without a direct tie to the teams geographic region as those players from each given region are eligible either way)
Home: Ellis, Bonday, Mullins, Zadareky, Hysell
Spotsy: Lugo, Todd, Clements, Hasnain
Seneca: DeLeonardis
UniTTy: Williams, Sheffield, Reiser, Cahill, Buono
Baltimore: Jernigan, Mela
NOVA: Sonderfan

If you have questions about players eligibility contact me.

Each teams coach seeds their own players within division. A match consists of each player on one team playing a 9 hole match against the player of their seed on the opposing team. Players gain one point for their team by winning a match and point for tying. Team with the most points wins the match.

I will also get team shirts done once again- cost will likely be roughly $6 per short sleeve t-shirt, $9 per long sleeve t-shirt, and $20 per sweatshirt They will bear your team name and an as yet undecided Hawk Hollow design. Deadline to order garments will be February 22.

Hello all,

For those who don't know me - this is Andrew Rivers and I am currently the president of the Disc Golf Club of Northern Virginia. This year for the Virginia Team Invitational, the Disc Golf Club of Northern Virginia will be having a HAWK HOLLOW BASKET CALENDAR FUNDRAISER for a new basket at the Hawk Hollow course. As I am sure many are aware, the course is maintained by John Biscoe who generously allows us to play on his land for free. This is one of the gem courses in our area but several baskets need replacing. We want to give John a new high quality basket as a small token of our appreciation for allowing us to play on his course and for running fantastic events.

To raise funds, I have created a 2008 Disc Golf Photo Calendar of pictures from our local courses. This calendar also contains local tournament dates from DE, MD, PA, VA, & WV that I have compiled thus far for the year and is a cool reminder you can place in the home or office. The calendar contains photos from Rockburn, Paw Paw, Grange, Hawk Hollow, Sherando and others (FYI - photos are from course holes and don't contain any shots of golfers). I really do think the calendar looks really nice and is worth the donation :D

The cost for the calendar will be $20 with ALL profits going directly to purchasing a new basket for the course. In addition to purchasing a calendar, I will of course be taking any other donations of any size for this effort. To order a calendar, please either PM me, email me ([email protected] sbcglobal.net) or talk to me at an event - I will be attending several Ice Bowls and events in Maryland and Virginia prior to the VTI and will have calendars on hand. Any questions, please ask via email ([email protected]) or pm. Think of the times you have played this awesome course for absolutely FREE and please contribute an amount worthy of the experience you have had there...

randyfristoe
Jan 07 2008, 07:11 PM
Oh we will be there. Just a group of us that were hoping we could get on board with your event.

would it be a horrible idea to drop the number of team members in order to allow for more teams?

johnbiscoe
Jan 08 2008, 11:31 AM
imo yes. my feeling is 9 players is the ideal number for team play as it translates nicely to groupings on 18/27 hole dg courses. it is also not my goal for this particular event to be particularly inclusive (hence the invitational part of the name).

a more likely occurence than dropping the number of players per team is establishing a qualifying process which would allow more teams POTENTIAL access. that would likely involve the battle of the blue ridge becoming the de facto va qualifying event. this, however is all hypothetical at this point and will remain so until some point later in the year.

Team Spotsy VTI Team Tryouts will be held on Sunday 24 February at 1000 at Hawk Hollow. Format will be one round of 27 holes.

Requirements for tryouts:

Member of Spotsylvania Disc Golf Club (Dues are $15 and must be paid prior to start of tryout round)
In order to raise money for the club there will be a $10 fee to participate in the tryout which also must be paid prior to start of tryout.
No payout upon completion of the tryout.

At least 6 of the 8 male players must be from the Spotsylvania / Fredericksburg area. Additionally the masters division is age protected so at least 2 of the eight players must be at least 40 years of age on or before 31 December 2008. (So this means if there are not at least two players of masters age that qualify in the top 8 positions, then the top two masters players regardless of how they finish on the day of the tryout will be on the team.)

The following players are "grandfathered" as previous members of team Spotsy: Lugo, Todd, Clements, Hasnain. Although grandfathered, if they desire to compete on team spotsy they have to qualify for one of the positions on the day of the tryout.

For those that qualify as team members, the entry fee will be $40 to compete in the VTI.

Andrew - received your phone message several weeks ago. Left a reply message. Wondering how you are doing in your fund raising and what feedback you have received from other VTI teams. Members of the Spotsy Disc Golf Club have provided some assistance to HH in regards to manual labor and materials. Our club also has $116 that has been donated / collected to support HH bridges etc. There will be 12 teams at the VTI. If each "team" donated $45 ($5 per member) thats $540. That would be enough for a basket and some money that can go towards material for the two remaining bridges that need to be built. Would be nice to have a new basket in the ground for VTI in 5 weeks. If teams own up to a donation - let's get a basket and in the ground and collect the money at the VTI! (I might even be pursuaded to begin the purchasing process and coordinating with John the placement of the sleeve etc between now and VTI - just need to know that teams will step up to the plate come 15 March with the $)

So far Jeff, the calendar project is going pretty smoothly. We have generated almost $500 in revenue which can be used to purchase baskets for the Hawk Hollow course. We still have more calendars available for purchase which I will be trying to sell at upcoming events.

Myself and Tommy Donelson have been trying to contact VTI team captains to see how we can involve other teams in this project and how to maintain interest to make this a tradition for the VTI event in the future.

At this point, a few teams have projects in the works and Team Baltimore led by Lindsay Merce and Ryan Lugo did a great food fundraiser out at the Druid Hill Ice Bowl. I heard rumors that several other teams are ready to start their own projects soon...

We are trying to contact DGA and Innova now to price out baskets and then I would love to coordinate a time to help put a sleeve in the ground. We may not be able to put some of the permanent baskets in the ground until after the donation totals come in, but at least one is a certainty now and I definitely would like to have that one in before VTI. I also sent you an email so we can get in touch about this.

Wanted to provide everyone with an update - so far the calendar sales have generated $520 towards new baskets for Hawk Hollow - my goal is $160 more to cover these two baskets. Several other teams have jumped on board with the course improvement project including Baltimore and Team Spotsy.

I ordered two custom DisCatchers from Innova - they will have a jet black band instead of yellow and will feature the Hawk Hollow "Cow Skull" logo similar to what I've cooked up in this picture.

Thanks to everyone for helping out with this and thanks to Innova for stepping up and giving me a discount price for the DisCatchers!!! 8)

Hey all,

Andrew Rivers and I have been working on getting teams on board with raising funds for new baskets at Hawk Hallow. I think that there are a few teams that we have not contacted or heard back from about this.

I think that all of the baskets currently on the course are on loan, from really awesome people. The baskets are not all in the best shape however. On the 975 hole, twine has to be added to keep your birdie four from falling out of the front of the basket.

In order to deck this incredible course out with baskets we are going to need everyones help. What we are hoping to do, is to get all the VTI teams to do some sort of fund raiser each year. It would be nice if every team raised enough money for a basket, then the course would be upgraded in just two VTIs.

Since raising $340(cost of a delivered powder black Discatcher), is a large burden to bear we are asking for teams to just make an effort. There are twelve teams, so if all of you raise is $28.33, you have done your part to help pay for one basket. This can be accomplished by a game of pass the hat amongst the players on your team, with everyone kicking in $3.14.

Eighteen years later we will have a killer course with killer baskets and we can all sit back and tell everyone we know what we did and how people should continuously buy us beer.

Team NOVA is already on pace to bring 2 baskets to the VTI. I know that its late in the game and the VTI is right around the corner. I am not asking you compete against them in the money race, I am asking that you be part of it. If you need help with coming up with ways to raise money for your team you can email me and we figure out what would work best for you.

Thanks,

Tommy Donelson

thanks chuck (and krupicka!).

i will post what i know of the teams tomorrow when i have a better connection. this looks like far and away the most competitive vti so far. last years finalists have both lost some players and most of last years also-rans are much stronger. i think this year we will see at least one virginia team in the playoffs again. (hasn't occurred since vince's masterful coaching job at vti uno.)

bayville, nova, hhome, blue ridge, calvert, pade, spotsy, baltimore all appear improved.

unitty has been strong each year whether they can spell or not.

charlotte promises to be a strong addition. their ams will be a strength from heresay.

With the overlap between Am and Pro anymore, it might make more sense to have player slots filled by anyone, man or woman of any age, in playing positions based on ratings ranges. Would probably be more fair. Just require that among the whole team that there be at least one woman and one geezer and one or two over age 40.

johnbiscoe
Feb 18 2008, 08:52 PM
that was how i did it the first year. all divisions were open to both players whoce age/gender/cashing status fit the division and to other players below a rating cap. the second year women had to be women.

this is the fifth year and this year masters have to be masters-aged. i have retained last years cutoff of 955 for pros playing am because imo the new pdga cutoff is way too high.

I hope Team Spotsy has put in some serious work and nice bridges at the Hollow to stay exempt from the POM.

If you haven't been to HH in awhile, three bridges are in place (holes 7, 9, between 11 & 12). Two more need to be added (holes 10, 14). I think Biscoe has come up with a plan and rumor has it that there will be a work day on 8 March - of course Biscoe will correct me if I am wrong. The current bridges will not disappoint, and I am sure when the two remaining ones are builit, they will not disappoint either.

Additionally, last year Team Spotsy did not have to use their exemption, however, this year it will be difficult....

What if some nice guy who doesn't EVER get to play the VTI even though he stays at the TD'S house enough to be considered for the HHome team donates the cost of a basket?

Tell me who to make the check out to and where to send it, and I personally challenge anyone who's ever played the HOLLOW, or had John's great cooking(for FREE), to kick in 20 bucks and the course would be paid for in no time.

20 bucks for the priviledge of playing one of the GREATEST disc golf courses in the country that could have permanent baskets if everyone kicked in just 20 bucks!

rumor has it that team baltimore (aka mid-atlantic rebels) is looking like myers, hatfield, pfeiffer, lugo, zink, seven, watson, dressel, lindsay. a very competitive team indeed. could i be off by one or two?

i get to be an alternate this year. whoo hoo, will be bouncing between HH and the grange that weekend anyway.

the above are to the best of my knowledge... some may not be in the correct order, team spotsy tryouts are this weekend so that team is purely speculation.

I cried when my name wasn't on that list. Honestly it is a relief. I have another doctor's appointment today. I plan on playing at Loriella but i'm in constant pain. I think I have some bone-on-bone contact.

If you don't believe him, just check out the 1030 he shot at the Cracked Plastic when the temp was minus ten and the winds were howling at 35 mph. Plus he was on team Peaches n Cream at the DITCH, Michigan's team tourney, in September and stomped down nearly all the other one-seeds. Sugar and I will be rolling into town Thursday morning, it looks like, and hopefully camping at the Grange, weather and Trepasso permitting. See y'all in a few weeks.
