The oldest continuously held amateur only event enters its 25 th year.

To celebrate we have decided to present this year's Am Crosstown as an A Tier.

Details will follow.

All volunteers are welcome.

All vendors who would like to make a large impact on the finest amateurs (and soon to be pros) east of the Mississippi can contact me at amcrosstown@aol.com.

Thanks,
Craig

Expert doesn't exist. So I hear.

Although this year I can play you Grand Masters (and kick butt) we have never had a Masters division or Womens division field large enough to warrant adding other age or gender divisions.

A solution to that is to have all Am oldsters and Am women within the sound of my typing sign up (early so you aren't shut out) for the Masters and Adv Womens divisions that we do offer.
When we have lots in those divisions, we can subdivide. Like amoebae...

I am not sure I tottally understand all the divisions numbers myself. Have only heard stories of changes.

This Is Not The Official Am Crosstown Flyer!

I hope to have the flyer out very soon. I still have to nail down the location for the Friday check in.

The "mail to" address will be released with the flyer. PayPal will be available TBA.

We hope to add payout to Adv Men and Adv Women. Let hear it ladies. Road trip?

Also, I'm trying to put a Saturday night players party together (RADL volunteers Please PM me) and maybe cash doubles on Friday afternoon- if there is any interest.

The basics...

The 25 th Amateur Dogwood Crosstown Classic
PDGA A-tier and North Carolina Series event

March 8-9, 2008

Divisions offered: Advanced Men, Advanced Women, Advanced Men Masters and Intermediate Men. The field will be limited to 144.

Entry fee: All Advanced Divisions $60.00. Intermediate Men $50.00

You must be a current PDGA member to compete.
Per the PDGA, for all Super Tour (A Tier) events, only PDGA current members will be allowed to compete, regardless of division. If a player in question does not provide irrevocable proof of their membership (2008 membership card, 2008 soft card, or name on the list of current members provided by the PDGA office) then annual dues will be collected before the player is allowed to participate
Please join the PDGA early and avoid the hassle.

We will be using Zebulon Community Park in Zebulon and Cedar Hills Rotary Park in Raleigh. You will be given your course assignment at check in.

You must check in on Friday March 7 There will be no Saturday check-in. You cannot compete if you do not check in on Friday. The RADL store will be available for you to select your players pack. Arrive early for best selection.
Location To Be Determined. Don't ask. I'm working on a place near Cedar Hills.

All players under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. TBA

Mandatory players meeting on Saturday morning at 9:15 at your course.

The field will be cut after the third round and the top half of each division (up to 72 players) will play a final round in Zebulon.

Again, when all details are nailed down, the official flyer will be released an registration can begin.

You can't please them all.

So, Richard and I have decided (again) to please as many as possible.

We'll do both. Friday night check in (location TBA) and Saturday at the courses.

We would recommend Friday night (for those who can make it) because your Saturday morning will be much smoother and you can redeem your voucher then. If you want to.

Saturday check in will end before the players meeting (exact time TBA). If you check in on Saturday you can redeem your voucher Sunday afternoon in Zebulon.

I hope to nail down the Friday night check in location (near Cedar Hills). Then I can rework the flyer and get it out to the area courses/TDs and posted here.

We'll also decide who will play where. Registration will close on March 1.

Thanks,
Craig

The Econo lodge on Capital Blvd (at I-440) is offering rooms for up to four (4) people for $60.89 per night. This price is about $6 to $11 off the best rates I could find. Seems like a deal, especially for 4 people.
Details...
1 Nice third floor rooms- interior corridor entry and no one walking over your head.

Hey, I'm up in Northern Virginia, but wouldn't want to miss the 25th Anniversary tourney for Raleigh. Because of work, I don't think I can get down there for Friday checkin -- I'll probably head down around 4 a.m. Saturday morning -- but rather than get a hotel, I would prefer to crash with a local on Saturday night, if anyone has a patch of floor they'd be willing to lend out -- I'll bring my own sleeping bag, etc... I'm 29, don't smoke, and will be glad to donate a couple of bombers of excellent microbrew as thanks for a place to crash. Anytime I'm out of town, I prefer to get to know the locals rather than hiding away in a hotel room.

Even better would be if anyone from the Raleigh team competing in the VTI has some space. I'll be on the NoVA team as one of the ams competing at the VTI and would be glad to get to know a few raleigh folks before you venture up this way for the tourney. I'd also love to get your pointers on the raleigh courses -- I've played disc golf in other parts of NC, but never Raleigh area, which is sad. I used to live in Durham, but that was before I knew what a disc was... back in the old, ignorant days before disc golf became a regular part of life.

Anyway, let me know if you think you've got some space for the Saturday night of the tournament. Thanks much.

All,
When I was first was contacted by the representative of this property a did a quick search for reviews of this motel. The search showed reviews that were fair to good. I have since been informed that the majority of reviews tend to be poor.

From the rep.: "The property has a long history of drug dealers and prostitutes. I did not know this until after a drug raid recently
after reading a police report

Although I am very disappointed the owners have not fixed up the property-in their defense I don't believe they knew the extent of the problems when they took over the property. I was hired to bring in a better class of clients.
In the hotels defense they have hired an off duty cop for the weekends to try and keep a lid on things."

I cannot recommend this property at this time. If you have reservations here you should be able to cancel them. I you choose to stay here I hope that you have a good experience.
I apologize if this causes any disruption to your travel plans.

I will be searching for several moderately priced motels that will allow easy access to the highways that lead to both Zebulon and Cedar Hills.

If you have any recommendations please post them here.

Thanks,
Craig

Like Chuck said. (He's like the NSA. You never see them, they just pop up.)

If Hack, Craig D. and Crow out of Fayet-Nam show up you might have to work for the win.

Can you hear Rocky... "ARRRGgggg"!!!!!

What happened to your rating to lower it so much, your much better than 922. Real bad tnmt somewhere.

More like just a bad couple of years :D

I used to think I played "smart" disc golf.... and tried to minimize the screwups. Of course taking a triple circle 10 on hole 9 at Buckhorn in 2006 proved that theory wrong. And I'm still kicking myself for the double circle 8 on hole 18 from the shorts in the first round this year. Going from 5 under standing on 17's tee to 1 over standing on hole 1's tee SUCKED.

No doubt. I seem to remember Byron usually shows up for the Crosstown and has won Adv Master 3 of the last 4 years. With a 962 rating, he's definitely got game for a fellow old guy. He & Craig both kicked my butt in 2006 when I last played the Crosstown. I guess the Adv Master field might be Bagger-iffic this year.....

Craig, watch out for the NC discgolf THIEF that has been taking discs. I don't know the details from Buckhorn, but I do know the painful details from Richlands. If you have golfers registered that have been to both Buckhorn and Richlands, and they come to your tournament, WATCH THEM, because someone is a total loser and needs to be "weeded" out. For the time being, I hope the TDs can bring light prior to the events for people to secure their plastic and watch out for suspicious bag browsing...

He played 927 golf at buckhorn which is not going to cut it in the "new" advanced division. but i understand where you are coming from. i found it funny that someone who won this event 2 years ago then played pro all last year and is now coming back to an am event and had the nerve to talk about hoping the competition was going to be better. now that made me lol

Wave, I remember when this started, players said they will stay where they were, really. Advance would not mve down, and Intermediate would stay the same. It mostly has, it's those that have no rating that upsets the balance. I can tell when I play well by the numbers, how do they tell. If i shoot 30 points above my rating for 4 rounds, I should at least get a date with Lindsey Lohan , right?. If a 930ish unrated player shoots poorly, and still wins, he should move up. Bagger plays 2 tournaments, I play oh 16ish, and he has more 900+ rated rounds than I. Where's my sign, and Icontinue to smile. Yeah baby, because of the comoradie

Jeremy broke his foot pretty severely last year. he dropped a huge peice of rubber ((from what i was told it weighed several hundred pounds (he works in a warehouse)) on his foot breaking several bones. so he was unable to play for a long time and is still trying to get back to the level of golf he was at last year about this same time. Jeremy is a Great guy and i do not think he is trying to take advantage of the system what so ever. (not that i think you where making that insinuation tyson)

Didnt know that about Bond :o(thanks for the answer), definelty the most encouraging player I have ever played with. Always takes the time to ask how you played. The only reason I said why is he not pro, are the videos I have seen of him threading needles at last year's VTI.

As far as anyone in the tourney taking advantage of the system, it will take high rated rounds to win this tourney regardless of if they are rated 900 to 970.

I welcome that challenge and just want to do better then last year's performance :D. Plus see good golf from others in my groups.

Glad to have Bond back competing.

Also Historically this is a "baggin" event alot like worlds and Bowling Green. winning the crosstown in N.C. is an extremely prestigious accomplishment so you see alot of people who qualify under the PDGA standards but don't neccesarily play am play this tournament to win the title.

look at 2006 for example Scotty Faison (had not played in a long time) Glen Warfel and Matt Buono where all playing pro at that time but they played down to get that big win.

Last year i think compared to recent years was the best example of a true Am tourney. and look at the top 5. all of them outside of myself have all become really competitive pro's. now this year with the PDGA restructuring the rating requirment we have the most competitive field maybe ever. i personally love the field this year. the more competition the better is how i look at it. but we do have by my count 6 pro's and one defending champion from 2 years ago coming back and already talking smack to ams :D should be a blast and is still anybody's game.

that is just my take on it. and i love it!

So if anyone has lost any discs at Trophy Lakes or most likely Hampton Park take a look. It might all be on the up and up, however, he has sold alot of discs and is selling at least 30 more right now that are all used and that is alot of discs to be selling that are all his. Hope all is good and these are not discs that were found and not returned. Go to ebay and type in "discraft lot of 10" and take a look to see if you recognize any if it is not on the up and up.

Dropped a check in the mail today. Watch out for old guys with low player ratings /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

On another note.... Sidney Lowe may have set a new low for coaching today at the end of the NCSU game against Dook. So you're down 1 point and the other team has the ball and the game clock only has 4 more seconds than the shot clock. In a best case scenario, Dook misses and NCSU gets the rebound with 4 seconds left on the clock... now having to go 90 feet to score. I bet any other decent division 1 coach would have fouled somebody on the other team, because even if they make them both... you now have 20 seconds (or more) left to go down and get the bucket to tie. I bet Herb is laughing at that one and I'm sure the sports radio shows will be having a field day with that on Monday.

RD

No doubt Robbie, I was just shocked. Obviously you have to foul and extend the game in that situation unless you can force a quick turnover. Very hard to believe a coach at this level could make that kind of mistake. Of course the missed foul shots and untimely turnover didn't help either. Man that was going to be a nice gift for the Heels but I guess we'll have to get it done in Cameron now! That Herb song is huckin filarious though. :D

Whats up Raleigh Disc Golfers. I am making the trip up to play in the tournament next week and was wondering if someone can tell me if there is a place to camp out up there. Also if someone has a GPS and can post the coordinates for the Zebulon course that would be much appreciated. I am coming up from Spartanburg, SC and have never been to Raleigh so I am coming up on the 7th and playing the courses. Any chance of them running doubles on that Friday?

Finally got registered. Can't wait. But would love to know a little more about the courses since I won't be able to get down there until Saturday morning -- do any locals want to give a quick review/description of the courses. I've looked at the course tours online, and those definitely help, but somehow I get more out of a good description from someone who knows a course well than I do out of a lot of pictures.

Thank you in advance. Really looking forward to my first A-tier and getting to meet some of the North Carolina disc golfers.

I figured I'd post this before Rocky's "bagger" chants start. I just noticed my name on the registration in the Advanced Masters division. Since my rating is under 935 I could actually play here with my fellow old guys..... but I did sign up for Advanced and that's where I intend to play. See you youngsters at Zebulon on Saturday.

we had some pretty nasty storms come through last night in north raleigh.

Being only 2 miles from Cedar Hills and knowing that a tree got uprooted on my street, I know that Cedar Hills had at least some limbs come down.

I hope there is no significant trees down and no baskets damaged if there is.

I am pretty stoked about coming up and playing in the tournament this weekend. I was wondering if any of the locals would happen to have a little bit of floor space that I could crash on for the weekend. I can be emailed at chadk3878@yahoo.com or give me a buzz at 864-237-4711. I did not see it on the flyer but is there going to be any type of players party? If not....can someone give me some suggestions of a good sports bar to watch some college basketball that would be close by.

Yeah that was a nasty storm last night. A tree fell down on hole three the dogwood by the corner of the baseball fence you that tree with the rock stuck in it. It'a gone cleaned it up today still some twigs leftover but man that tree just made that hole a lot easier. Now you can bomb a hyzer shot over the baseball field just don't hit the scoreboard. But man I've been out there doing what I can but that storm just took all of my hard work and made a mess.
