Highest rated round is 1117 by Brian Skinner on May 29, 2005 with a 41 on the Grange Dark Side with an SSA of 53.7. However, we have to break the records into SSA ranges because comparing an SSA 48 course to an SSA 62 course is apples and oranges. So Skinner has the record for 48-53.9 SSA courses. If Borg ends up -13, he'll top Schultz in the 54-59.9 range. At -14 he should make it to 1100. And, looking at the scores, he needs a birdie to do it on 18. A -15 would have still put him several points behind Skinner but on a course about 5 shots higher SSA.

BTW, the final hole is the dam hole where Timmy Gill did not look at his score (he said he normally doesn't), went for it, went OB and took a 5 when playing for a safe par would have won the event. Fortunately, he won the playoff over Barry.

We may see 1100+ round rating next to Borg's name shortly ...

From what I heard from various players, scores were generally improved across the board from Thursday, meaning the SSA might be as much a throw or two below Thursday's SSA. Gonna be tough to get the 1100. With no hard data whatsoever, I predict it's a 1092 round.

cgkdisc
Mar 08 2008, 09:45 PM

Could be the highest. The stats are in there but I don't have an easy way to dig. Not too many NTs that are just 54 holes where it's statistically "easier" to average higher than it would be in 72 holes or more like Worlds.

If those round ratings hold up officially, then not only will Feldberg have the top rated round in the 54-60 category but McCabe will slip into third behind Barry. Nate just missed top 5 and would be in 6th by one point. Grider and Jernigan slip to a 4th place tie at 1081.

Mar 09 2008, 01:55 AM
Chuck,

Do you take in consideration that the ratings may be a little inflated for the top pro's due to some of the holes being unreachable by many of the other divisions. It makes the course 3 to 4 shots extra for the divisions that can't clear many of the water hazards.

Take the ladies for instance.....They play a significantly longer track since they have to go the long way around on some of the holes. Could some of the ladies scoring below their ratings possibly inflate the high end ratings of the pros?

cgkdisc
Mar 09 2008, 03:10 AM
Interesting you mention this because I thought the same thing. If there's any set of courses where there are water crossings too far for many players to carry, it's these two. So in 2003 we tested the idea by comparing the SSA produced by the top 50 propagators and by 50 propagators around an 875 average. Turns out both produced the same SSA within a few tenths. I also forecasted the SSA before we had the scoring data and presented the Forecaster we had developed for the DGCD at the Summit meeting. Those forecasts came within a few tenths overall and no more than 3 tenths variance on individual hole predictions.

All we can figure is that the top players take enough OB penalties going for the water carries and other OB in comparison to the lower rated players who have to go around on some holes and play safer on average.

ninafofitre
Mar 09 2008, 03:26 AM
If you really take a good look at the Women and the Grandmasters, it's hard to say there isn't something there?

It's hard to buy the guys are playing 50+ pts over their ratings and the best women are playing below ......hmmmmm?....At those two courses if you can carry water 350ft+ and can throw a consistent 380-420ft drive those courses are very "handy".

cgkdisc
Mar 09 2008, 11:07 AM
I'm about to leave and play today but take a look at a grouping of Open players who have ratings that match the top women ratings and shot +8 or higher like the women. Looks to me like they shot about the same or even worse at first glance. I took a quick look at last year and it looks like the top women beat their rating at Memorial.

Something that nobody mentioned was that an Advanced player hit an Ace too. Hole 18 at Vista, Trey McKelvey from San Diego, nailed the chains with about 15 onlookers. Trey finished in 3rd place.

And the battle between Barry and the Borg was definitely one that was worth watching. Barry got robbed of a bird on 17 which would have made 18 that much more exciting. But Feldberg's putt on 18 was a thing of beauty.

So, I am at the Memorial right now sitting in Dukes. I just got Avery to sign up for the Fantasy Disc Golf site. So, you might not be able to beat him in real life, but now you have the chance to beat him online!

And don't forget that there is a $5 league where every week you have the chance to win a disc provided by one of our sponsors. And right now, we have VERY FEW people signed up. Those discs are going to be very easy to come by! And I am having some meetings with some great disc golf companies working on more sponsorship.

There is only 1 day left to get your picks in. Sign up at http://www.fantasydg.com. Remember, if you want to wait until after the Memorial to sign up for the Pro or Adv division, I will still take your picks you make in the free Novice league and move them to Pro or Adv league. But you have to sign up before the next NT event!

Feldberg's unofficial rating is down to 1095. Apparently, some DNF rounds got entered as 888 instead of 999 and the system calculated ratings of 413 for those players which inflated the SSA by a few tenths. Those 888 are now 999s and the unofficial ratings updated.

My son Nicholas and I had the rare oppurtunity to caddy the final round for Valarie Jenkins and for Carrie Berlogar. Valarie was a real sweetheart as she chatted up Nick the whole round and still stayed completely focused on the task at hand, to finish up strong with her first big win of the year. Burl is a true professional as she worked her way around the course, never giving up hope even to the very end. I really admired Des Reading, as she was playing with obviously terrible pain from a hip injury. She never complained once and was still playing at the top of her game and was pleasant to be around. Liz Lopez was quite the surprise for me, as I've heard and read about her several times, but never had the chance to meet her or see her play. She was so steady and focused, she made it look as if she's been playing this game forever. Good job to you Liz and keep it up as we'll be watching., and good job to all the ladies. From the looks of it it should be

Hoj Nybo

was this played off for or does it go to Kyle for being on top for the best last round?

I wish I had good footage of the incredible putt Dave made on 16, but instead I'll share with you the two heartbreakers on 17. Dave had a one stroke lead at this point and had he made this putt he was assured of keeping that lead going into 18.

Feldberg's putt on 17 (http://www.youtube.com/v/7r2cJRH--gU)

Then with opportunity knocking, all Barry had to do was make this putt to tie it up going into hole 18.

Barry's putt on 17 (http://www.youtube.com/v/vj7YxfbdtCU)

Dave's did look off on the video and Barry just needs to find out how to make 20ft putts.

ah yes... good call

in which case it looks more like this (depending on if anyone declined at the event... does that happen?!)

Dan Ginnelly - masters
Mike Milne - masters
Tom Embree - masters
Robbie Bratten - open
Paul McBeth - open

I know that Nikko got a spot....he rode back with me from Arizona and had the entry envelope in his hand. Perhaps someone did decline.

Ginnelly likely had a TD exemption.

If you were not happy with the way the first round was setup regardless of what people say about competitive advantage, I would highly recommend contacting the Competition Committee instead of letting it brew up inside. Bringing your disgust in the rules change to someones attention may make you feel better. Try this Link (http://www.pdga.com/contact.php?PHPSESSID=906855a177bc9e808958dd88010d e9bb) and email Cris Bellinger or anyone on the competition committee and be patient, they will get back to you, at least that has been my experience.

I was curious if any of the ams who played the tournament had any thoughts on the no-payout format. I noticed that there were 141 ams last year and 145 this year, so the no-payout format did not seem to impact attendance.

I personally loved the no payout...but that might be because I never had any aspriations of driving the 34 hours and then being able to compete for a win. Not that I could've won it anyway.

The no payout may not be the best option for all tournaments though. Part of the draw for the Memorial was the fact that it was the Memorial and the chance to play on those courses.

I don't have information about the Memorial, but the Wintertime Open has adopted a low/no payout format the past three or four years. The Am side of the event still sells out every year. Basically all Ams pay $25.00 (If PDGA and So Cal current) and receive a basic player package of disc, t-shirt, mini and raffle ticket. The top winners receive a trophy and maybe a disc or two plus more raffle tickets. There is a lot of merchandise in the raffle and all players have a chance to win, but the winners get more chances.

Again, this event sells out year after year (it actually over sells). Part of it could be the event is in February and is one of the first B-Tier events of the year. Part of it could be many players want So Cal Points. Maybe some players want to play at historic Oak Grove. Wintertime Open has been going on for 30 years. It was a very successful event before the format change and has continued to be successful since.

Hope this helps.

I live in the phoenix area and did not play this year because of the high price of entry, no pay out and having to take 3 days off of work instead of two.

I have played 4 times and have never finished lower then 4th in adv masters. If you dont expect to cash then the players pack would be great .. I on the other hand did not like what was in the players pack and my payouts in the past where pretty nice.
I would be happy with no payout if the entry fee was $20.00 or less. I really dont need a player pack filled with stuff I dont use. I truly missed playing and I will most likely play next year if they lower the entry fee, or go back to a payout format.

The vast majority of players loved the players packages and no payout format. Based on the success this year I don't see any reason to change from that. People don't seem to understand that the same amount of merchandise is being distributed, however it is going out to 100% of the Am field and not just 40%.

I am sorry I don't know the answer, I have never been to the Wintertime Am awards. I would imagine about an hour? Rizbee could tell you.

They only play one round on Sunday with a Final 9, so everyone gets to hit the road early even if it takes a while for the awards.

Hey, my buddy Keith played the tourney and took second. They rewarded him a big [censored] basket trophy that was sweet! Believer me you want one. He also shattered the PDGA ratings record in the Ams division by more than 20 points with a 1039 rated round. Now I want to know why no one has written anything about it in the magazine or rewarded the guy for a record breaking round in over 7 years ( that's all that is tracked online but by the looks of it its gotta be the highest ever) Go check it out if you're curious about it. Keith is to humble to say anything but I think he should get recognition for it. Maybe an end of the year inclusion for highest ratings...

Over all though the dude freakin' loved the courses and no payout. The set up he said was like no tourney we have seen in Texas and that's saying a lot if you ask me. Unless you're selling your discs back, you don't really need to play a tourney to get plastic because you are not going to cash half the time anyhow.

peace out

You mean the highest rated am round at the memorial right? I know there other am rounds higher than 1039, like a guy at BG this year had a 1047.

I would guess that the highest am round ever would be Jeb Bryant rnd#6 AM worlds 06 (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=5513&year=2008&incl ude_ratings=1#Advanced)
