Now that MJs is over it's time to focus on the next big event in DFW. On Nov. 3rd and 4th we will be holding our 17th VPO and we will be an "A" tier again. Club members have been working very hard for a year now to make this years event as good as ever. We hope to see you there.
I want to use this first post to test my memory on past Open Champions....
'91 Craig Leyva
'92 Billy West
'93 Mike Sayer
'94 Matt Frank
'95 Mike Sayer (beating Climo by 4, his worst loss that year)
'96 Scott Stokely
'97 Scott Stokely
'98 Barry Shultz
'99 Ken Climo
'00 Barry Shultz
'01 Ron Russell
here's where I get a little fuzzy, but I believe it went
'02 Cam Todd
'03 Ron Russell
'04 Barry Shultz
'05 Barry Shultz
'06 Coda Hatfield
I hope I got them all right. I know I'm right up to '01 and I know it's odd that I would get mixed up on the more recent. Credit it to senility :D.
Women's Champions in the past include Juliana Bower (but it was Korver at that time) and Des Reading. The Queen of disc golf Elaine King has made it twice and we were very taken with her coming to our little event.

PLEASE offer at least an MA2 division. Either that or put a rating requirement on MA1. Last year was great, but there were lots of MA2 and MA3 players who wanted to play and therefore were forced into MA1. Not only were they not able to be competitive, but they were also forced to throw holes like Champ. 8 and we ended up with an 8-card+ backup on Champ. 8. I think more fun will be had by all if MA2 and MA3 are included.

We'll be playing 24 holes per round with 48 on Saturday and 24 Championships Sunday morning. I know this is a hard Sat. but there will be no final nine this year so Sunday will be alot easier. After the rounds we'll tap a keg and throw ace in the oaks again while the cards are tallied.
With the short days we will need to get the players meeting started early at 8:45 and we'll get the first round going by 9:30.
We are currently working with the city to possibly bring in three "new" holes never played before. We believe you'll enjoy them and they will hold all the challenge you want.
More to come.

We're trying to get the Parks Dept. to let us do the new holes, but because of a vandalism issue with other park users, they're not sure they want us to go back in that part of the park. If we're not able to use the new holes we will go the more familiar route of using six holes from the old front nine. We have been told that we can do a little more clearing on holes C and D than we've been allowed to do in the past.
I would also like to thank Tom Lowry and the Junior Disc Golf Foundation for their sponsorship and support.

This coming Sunday the 30th the ADGA will be holding it's annual Club Championships. This is the one time every year that members can re-up for the next year at the lowest rate possible all year. We will have a players meeting at 9:00 and be playing two rounds as quickly as possible with the club providing lunch. Before the crowning of the champs we will tap a keg and throw ace in the oaks with all aces splitting. It's basically a big party and we'd love to see as many as possible show up. The more the rowdier ;).
Re-up $10
Entry $10 optional
Ace pot $5 " "

So $30 to play the Club Championships and another $20 will get you a fun time, a shot at a free entry Open div. only, a free lunch, a few beers, a shot at the ace in the oaks money, and a very cool collectors edition of the VPO tournament discs. Plus you'll be helping support a big event here in DFW.

"I'm proud of you. At least you got a little money this tournament. Love you, Amy"
OUCH!
Let me clarify her words. In 1999 the VPO was a 3 day event, 27 holes on Fri, Sat, and Sun. I was the only ace for the 1st two days and figured since the course would be the championship course on Sunday that it would remain the only ace. Well, one of the guys that was on my card in round 1 when i threw the ace hit an ace himself on old #8 (hole E, the 230' hole along the west side of the pond.) His name is Barry Schultz. :D
I took next to last place cash that year ($120?), and had to split the ace pot with Barry. My half for the ace was $185ish. For a whopping total of $305ish. I had much higher aspirations then 2nd to last place cash, especially since i cracked the top 10 the year before. Oh well, in my wife's words, "At least you got a little money this tournament." :p

Thanks for the props, Tom and thanks for putting in the effort to get this event's registration online. I wanted to let everyone know that titledisc.com is still committed to this cause and does have the signup page ready to go. It can be found at http://www.titledisc.com/Events/VPO_07.php for your signup pleasure.
Soon, titledisc.com will be transitioning to my care and hopefully I will be able to streamline the process enough to make this sort of thing go much faster in the future. Ben has kept it up and running for a long time now. Family and personal life has kept him from being quite as quick to respond as I know he would have liked to be. Deidre and I are committed to keeping titledisc.com at the forefront of online tournament registration. Soon, we'll be asking for feedback from the DG community on what they want from the site and what can be improved. Hopefully you will all bear with us during this transition and titledisc.com will soon be back in everyone's good graces :D

Just remember that we're an "A" tier event so your points and ratings will be more valuable here. The field will be strong with Nolan and Coda alone. Who knows who else will be showing up. Hope it's you!!! :D

maybe par 4's or even 5's?
cgflesner
Oct 21 2007, 10:45 PM
just two good shots. I don't think a 600' hole favors somebody who can boom it. Not many people can reach a 600' hole, def not in the Am division.
gregbrowning
Oct 22 2007, 12:39 AM
According to my best visual estimate from Google Earth, the longest of the three is just a smidge under 1000'. This one requires an accurate tee shot. Par 4 at least, probably closer to a legit 5.
The shortest is right at 600' and is open. Tough par 3 or fairly birdie-able 4.
The other hole is about 650' as the crow flies, but not even Coda could throw the direct route. The best play is to a landing area at around 480' with another 200-215' to the basket. The tee to landing area distance could vary depending on tee placement.
I know as a rank amateur I am not the best judge for par on these, but I will throw these holes this week to get an idea of how they play without baskets in place. At the very worst, at least we will be playing things differently than before.

Chapionship "c" is unplayable because of all the mesquite trees that have grown up. We're looking at Champ.#5 and #11. Possibly one or two new champ. holes.
arlskipshot1
Oct 22 2007, 07:18 PM
The area in question is at the front of the park where there are very few obstacles to bring in to play, so we were thinking of going long and bringing in some of the area where the original holes #5 and #6 were. By going over there we will be able to use some sidewalk, trees, and flowerbeds to toughen it up. These holes would only be used Sun. morning for the championship course. We think it will be interesting. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have filled the Amatuer fields. As of this morning, Sun. 10/28, all Am. enties will go on a waiting list. I'm saving approx. 15-18 spots for additional pros. I have to do this to give us a chance at retaining our A tier status. This is much harder to do these days if you have a Pro/Am event on one course. There may be some spots open up if we don't get enough pros to fill their field. If so anyone on the waiting list that's at the park Sat. morning will get them. Sorry about that. Hope you all got in that really wanted to. Thanks, Skip

discgolfdog
Oct 29 2007, 12:47 PM
It's our belief the VPO has been too easy the last couple years. We didn't want to do the safari holes this year because of complaints last year. So, there are some short pin positions you will not play. All advanced and pro divisions will play the championship tees on Sunday. That means you will get to throw champ.#2 (drive goes from Dalworthington Gardens into Arlington, hopefully). You will also get to throw off the mountain on champ. #8 along with a couple new twists on Sunday. The old course #5 inland green will be used Sunday! Plus #7 from the old course.

baldguy
Oct 29 2007, 03:59 PM
of course you could always move up, Bagger ;).
I think it's a very good thing for Clay and Skip to offer MA2 and to have them playing from the short pads. Last year we had a huge backup (1.5 hrs +) on Champ. 8 because so many of the Rec/Int level players could not clear the trees on their teeshot. This is not to say that none of them could... I played Int. last year and took a 3 on Champ 8 :D... but giving the shorter throwers a way to play from the shorter pads will save a lot of time, to be sure.
discgolfdog
Oct 29 2007, 04:38 PM
We can't afford big backups this year. The temp. holes from the old course should provide plenty of toughness for the int. field without long backups. (I hope)

Flesh, Donald and Pepper are in. Mace has talked with Barry and was assured he was coming in. Des and Jay have said they will be here. Ron Convers has said he plans to be here, but something may get in the way. He's waiting to confirm once he hears.
This is the first time Skip and I have run a big event. We will probably make a few mistakes. We will learn from those mistakes. Luckily we have Brian and his experience to help us.

Still after running the FHF with him I know we'll be a great team. Noone has ever been more dedicated to helping the ADGA and the VPO than Claydog has been this past year.

Friday night I called one of my guys on the waiting list and told him he and his two friends were in if they showed up Sat. morning which they did. In signing up for Intermediates the first guy says he's not going to pay for the ace pot cause he'd just be donating so just put him in the ace in the oaks and pays his $50 ( 40 to play, 5 non member PDGA fee, and 5 ace in the oaks ). The next one says me too same thing and pays $50. The third guy says he doesn't want to sign up for the oaks and he'd pay me Sun. if he decided to and gave me $45 to which I say " so you're not in the ace pot or ace oaks" and he's says "yeah". Second round is no more than 4 holes played and the kid hits the first ace of his life and everyone starts celebrating and telling him he won $1250. I saw him and high fived him and started walking away when I remember he's not in the ace pot and remind him to which he argues along with his friend that he was in. I wasn't near my books but I was pretty sure I was right so I go back to HQ and sure enough he wasn't in. Needless to say he blames me and won't be back tomorrow to finish. I know what he said at sign ups and I know I'm right, but it was still a confrontation I didn't need and I do feel for the guy. I even gave him on of our special full color discs, but I think the embarrassment he would have to deal with was too much for him and he quit.
Moral of story ... don't doubt your abilities and get in the ace pot. :p

Same thing happened to me at an A-tier, the Gator Country Classic in Gainesville, FL in 2005. I didn't pay the $5 ace pot either. I was the first to hit an ace in the tourney. My first ace ever. Everyone was going crazy for me, then I told them I wasn't in the pot. The TD gave me a disc and rose at the closing events. Everyone was laughing pretty hard.
I lived in NC at the time and returned to the tourney the following year and people still remembered me as the guy that did not get in the ace pot. LOL. Tough lesson learned.
3 other guys hit the next day so we would have split $480 four ways. Still not a bad payout.

I don't know all the scores off hand, but I can tell you that on the 24 hole Championship layout, Coda had the best round, which was 72.
Par on this layout would probably be 77.
In addition to the usual 6 temp holes, they also played championship tees on 2, 5, 8, and 17. We had alternates set up for some holes as well. They went 11's tee to 12's short pin - about 840'. Next hole was from the tree on 13's fairway to Old 5 in the northeast corner of the park - about 650'. Then a modified version of Old 7 - 380'. Then a new tee for 14 which played about 620'.
I really hope everyone enjoyed the alternates. The goal was to make things fun and different and ratchet up the difficulty level for the final round since we were not doing a final 9.

Skip, Clay, Mace - Great job on the event and nice to meet all of you. I had a blast! Also the course is awesome. Veterans has been moved up to the top of the list of my favorite courses. I really liked all the long holes, you simply just don't see those on too many courses.
And aces in the oaks, it was surreal to hear all the Ohhhhhs echoing through the woods, even if I did have 2 that hit and didn't stick

the ratings number shown for round three is not correct. the results were submitted as if all divisions played the same course. i'd expect about aq 20 point jump when its fixed.

Yeti
Nov 05 2007, 08:34 PM
Round 3 at The Vet was the toughest layout played in the five years I have played here. I think that course played at a conservative Par 79 on the 24 hole layout. Currently a 79 would yield a 985 rating and I think that is rated low by about 15 points, imagine that.
Par 4's
-Hole 2
-Hole 8
-Hole 11 (11 and 12 were combined)
-Hole 12 (temp hole near planters)
-Hole 14 (temp tee to 14's basket)
-Hole 17 or 18 (Both holes could be Par 4's, but think one or the other may avg. a tough Par 3)
-Hole D
That equals seven Par 4's and a Par of 79. I say that is conservative even because:
-Hole 1 (Tough Par 3)
-Hole 5 (Longer tee made for tougher Par 3)
-Hole 8 (Could be a Par 5, Coda's only three on the lead card looked and felt like an Eagle)
-Hole 17 and 18 (Both could be Par 4's)
Keep working on this Chuck, it is interesting watching the various manipulations change the ratings.
Anyone that watched Coda catch fire and shoot that 72 would most definitely say it was better than a 1030

Nov 05 2007, 08:51 PM
I agree Mr. Yeti. I cant see anyone much better then a 72 on that course. The way it is now you would have to shoot a 67 to get a 1060 rated round. I cant even fathom a 67 on that course!
I think the tougher course is a good thing, as long as you dont add another final 9 in there like last year. That would be my only thing.

It wasn't like it was all about length, there was a variety of holes that tested all of your shots, long bomb, tight and technical, up hill, down hill, in the woods, hyzer, anhyzer, rollers, and the shot I don't have the overhand. I know one thing, I'm starting work on the thumber and pancake this week. I probably left a good 3 shots per round out there because I didn't really have that in my bag.

You can't easily compare 18 versus 24 hole rounds. The extra 6 holes narrows the scoring and ratings range. Take a look at the ratings in R1 at Pro Worlds on Granite (Randolph was on Blueberry in B pool). SSA was 57 and the R3 at VPO is the equivalent at 76 for 24 holes.
www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6277&year=2007&incl ude_ratings=1#Open (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6277&year=2007&incl ude_ratings=1#Open)

So 4 throws on VPO is equal to 3 throws on Granite and each are worth about 25 rating points on those layouts. Essentially, when you have beaten a player by three on 18 holes, you need to beat him by another throw if you play 6 more holes to maintain the same rating. You can see how a score of 54 and 72 rate about the same with 54 being 3 less than the SSA and 72 being 4 less than the SSA.

As much as some of you would like to make ratings relevant..the fact is they are far too fallible to take seriously.
Unfortunately, Mitch Mac had taken offense that things hadn't gone as smooth to start the morning as we would have hoped and he was also concerned that we would be finishing the second round in the dark, which luckily we didn't. After he had been expressing his concern for several holes, one of the guys on his card told him to clam up and play golf to which he decided he had more important things to do and left. I personally was upset that my ineptitude had contributed to his leaving. I have some good memories of times I've spent with MM and I do care that he got upset.

Ratings are anything but accurate. If I shoot a good round and nobody else does than I have a good rating. If I shoot a good round and everybody else does that I have a krapy rating. Ratings should be based on how you play the course not how every body elese does.

Urban myth. Some say that but we have thousands of rounds that don't bear that out. Any 2-5% variance in round ratings is no different than your typical variance in scores simply due to changing luck when sometimes you have one, two or three cut thrus, bounce outs, or rollaways.

All I know is my 6 down the first round got me on the leader card and was 1000 rated. My three down the second round was 989 rated on a course that played atleast 4 strokes harder. But ever body on the top two cards except for me and Chris shot 6 down or better. And because Coda beat the snot out of the course and everybody else on the top two cards did well it raised the 1000 rated round score.
I am not bitter about any of this. Just giving my opinion. I know you guys try your best and do a great job at it! I thank you for that!

Ratings are the only way that we can seperate the groups with some sort of precision...While I don't always agree with the rating I shot, I would say that overall, they do a pretty good job of keeping the fields straight.
If you look at the consistant winners in large tourneys, it is no fluke that the 1000 rated players are almost always on top.

I don't mind the questions but I can't answer them or correct the ratings when you're looking at unofficial ratings and don't know which divisions played what layout. Some TDs haven't learned how to get the layouts correct or they don't take the effort to do so. The third round at VPO was initially uploaded with everyone playing the same layout. So I fixed that when someone mentioned it. R1 and R2 still have everyone on the same layout. Was that the case? If not, then maybe some of those numbers will change in the official ratings. Or, tell me now and I'll tweak them.
The one thing that's changed this year is that everyone who plays the same layout at different times will get the same rating for the same score when the official ratings are done unless the TD specifically indicates the wind was significantly different between rounds on the TD report. However, the online software that does the unofficial ratings hasn't been reprogrammed to do that. So, you'll see slight variances between rounds on the same course where the same score will be rated different in each round.

I believe everyone played the same holes on the first day. The second day you have already corrected...So we are good! You are doing a great job Chuck. Thanks for your hard work.

All I know is my 6 down the first round got me on the leader card and was 1000 rated. My three down the second round was 989 rated on a course that played atleast 4 strokes harder.
For what it's worth, this sounds pretty accurate, except for the 4 strokes harder part. In reality it was probably 1.5 - 2 strokes harder (one on hole 13 and one split between holes 8 and 18 for a total of two strokes, give or take). If the SSA for round one was 66 (giving you a 1000 rating for that round), then round two should have been about 68... which makes your 69 about 10 points off of SSA... so about 990. factor in that it probably wasn't an even 2.0 stroke difference... and 989 makes perfect sense.
I personally think ratings are a great motivator for players to participate in PDGA-sanctioned events. Are they worth all the fuss they receive? Maybe not so much.

Your score is one of the most personal things you produce in this sport. Ratings are just a slightly fancier multiple of those numbers. It's no wonder that players usually want to think they've shot better than they really have, and likewise, don't always wish to face the truth of that personal info when they haven't. Pretty much human nature at work here. For some, ratings are a little too much of a public barometer of success or failure as a person when it's really just a simple reflection of your disc golf skill in the recent past and a reasonable estimate of your next performance. For other players, your "courtesy rating" during a round might be much more important...
