Does anyone know if the side games will be on a certain time schedule or if its just when you show up. I am hoping to get two rounds worth of practice in on Sunday but still want to play the side games that I signed up for.
Will we just be able to show up and play our side games and then just go elsewhere to play?
My son, Paul Nesbitt, is looking for a Junior <19 doubles partner. Also, we only have (1) car, so he is going to need a ride to the courses for the "Z" pool all week. We are willing to help out with gas.
See ya in Kazoo!

Hey Dave,
my son Chris is playing the z pool also, as a 16 and under. My wife will have a vehicle so we could help out with the rides. He is going to be playing mixed doubles though and already has a partner. We're staying at the Value Inn and I have no idea where that is or if your staying anywhere close but as long as you have him at the hotel, we're more than willing to get him there on time. Give me a call to confirm. (928)369-5574

Not being from there can you GIVE us an alternate route to use?
Remember - we are going to be driving with regular rush hour and school kids traffic on Monday thru Friday, so a little help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Based on MapQuest, this looks like the easy way to adjust for 35th being closed:
Coming from the west on I-94, exit 80 Sprinkle Road north to M96. Take right and go to 33rd.
To Robert Morris: Take left and follow the remaining instructions.
To Ft. Custer: Continue on M96 following instructions.
Coming from east on I-94, exit 88 onto E. Michigan Av. going west. Go to M96.
To Ft. Custer: Take right on M96 and follow directions
To Robert Morris: Continue onto M96 going west to 33rd. Take right and follow directions.

In the email I recieved from Karolyn Garlock it states that Am mixed doubles will be at Meyer Broadway - both the permanent and temp courses will be played. The Pro Mixed doubles will be playing Oshtemo twice.

Craig, I'm not local, but I played a hot round Sunday at Robert Morris (54) and when I looked back at a couple of ratings of rounds there from a year or two ago using the archived events stats, that would have been around 1,000 - and I understand it is a little tougher right now than before, even.
I have no knowledge regarding a 1,000-rated round on other courses in K'zoo.

Without looking up past scores, here are my guesses on 1000
Robert Morris - 53
Meyer Broadway - 53
Kimball Pines (a few holes are different now so this one is more of a guess) - 54
Three Rivers Temp (basing this on a friends' report of the course) - 52
Timber Ridge - 60 or 61

The women partners are tough to come by but there are more ams than pros coming. Usually they have their partners figured out and those that don't have lots of good choices. If you get there Friday, make it known at check-in that you're looking for a partner. Sometimes the match making can happen that way.

The field events are Sunday (Putting, Distance preliminaries, Mini, SkillShot by EDGE) at Timber Ridge from 9am to 4pm and we suggest that you arrive early. Please note that all SkillShot competitors must begin their rounds no later than 3:30pm. 2008 Competition Manual
B. All players within a division for the first round should be
grouped via two methods:
(1) Random grouping; players within a division may be
randomly grouped for the first round and grouped by
cumulative score for each round there after.
(2) Player Rating grouping; players within a division may
use player rating to set first round groups. Highest
rated player starting on the lowest number hole, the
second highest rated player starting on the following
hole, etc. This process would continue until all
starting holes have been filled.
Now, which one takes precedence over another is up to debate. :)
dthrow
Aug 07 2008, 11:09 AM
I would think since the competition manual offers the second option, it would be up to the TD on which method to follow. Either would be fine, but it should be one or the other, not who the td wants to put together.

Maybe everyone who is complaining should run a tourney and see how hard it is. It's easy to complain... but harder to step-up and DO the work.
Keith Johnson has been the TD of more PDGA events than you have even played - including Am Worlds Miami.
Which just goes to prove it must be random because they wouldn't purposely put Keith in that pool! Come on Keith, you can rise to the top!

Worlds first round groups are not random, they are seeded, so to speak. Obviously, its a bit different this year, but in the past it worked out like this.
The defending champion was ranked number 1.
Then from there on, it was based on ratings.
The number 1 ranked guy was on hole 1 with the 72nd ranked guy in the pool and the middle two in the pool.
The number 2 ranked guy was on hole 2 w/ the 71st ranked guy etc etc etc
I enjoyed it like that. Most of the top players will play with each other by the end of the week.
Most first round groupings I see are not random and worlds is no different, however, it is CLEARLY the best way I've seen to do a leaderboard.

It looks like this is pretty much the case with this year's tee times as the highest rated players are playing with the lowest rated players. So if a Rec player wanted to get in a round with Climo, Schultz, Feldberg, or Doss, he need only register for Worlds? Sounds like a pretty good deal (for the Rec player).

Say hello to Larry LaBond, the godfather of local disc golf
Thursday, August 07, 2008
BY JOHN LIBERTY
[email protected]
388-8579
KALAMAZOO -- You could make the argument that the 2008 PDGA Professional & Amateur World Disc Golf Championships wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Larry LaBond.
And you would be right.
When talking about attracting the event here, tournament director LaBond points to the help of the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek visitors bureaus. But long before they put their considerable weight behind the event, which is expected to bring in 1,000 players from around the world, there was LaBond.
``Everything we have around here we can thank Larry for, disc golf wise,'' said former local professional Todd Branch, one of the first players to tour full time. ``He puts a lot of time and energy into the Kalamazoo disc golf scene, that's for sure.''
Branch said it's accurate to call LaBond the godfather of local disc golf.
From a course standpoint, LaBond's fingerprints are everywhere. When he moved here from Washington, D.C., to attend Western Michigan University in fall 1990, there were no courses. People used targets, shooting discs at trees or other objects in places like graveyards or a make-shift course on the Kalamazoo College campus, LaBond said. In 1992, he started work on Cold Brook Park. Three years later it opened.
Since then, a number of courses have popped up in and around Kalamazoo and the sport has grown, thanks in large part to LaBond.
A recent example is Victory Park in Albion, which opened last fall. The city and Albion College, where LaBond has taught disc golf since 2006, paid for the course. The city installed and maintains it. It will be one of the four courses used by pros at next week's championships.
LaBond, 36, said organizing the tournament has been more work than he anticipated. As the director of the world championships, he can't compete. Instead, he chose to assure the tournament, which could be the largest of its kind in terms of payout and participation, runs smoothly.
``I'd love to play it, it would be a lot easier than running it,'' LaBond joked.
He said he most likely wouldn't front a bid to bring the tourney back, although he'd support another effort.
Plus that way, he could throw on the courses he built.

Apparently Nikko aced hole#10 at Victory Park in practice.
From Greg Hosfeld's blog: http://www.onegranddiscgolftour.com/
We got a late start on our way to Albions Victory Park (#908) This is a pristine park with a river slowly meandering through. Complete with a dam waterfall and some ponds that come into play in the middle of the track.
When we reached hole 10, Nikko anhyzered his putter exactly 327 over the river and directly into the chains for a very smooooth ace! The mower, who had been stopping to allow us to drive (even the mowers observe the rules of etiquette!) drove up and congratulated Nikko, saying hed never seen anyone ace the hole. Chances are he wont again for a while.
There are some big shots on this course but most of the holes are birdie-able according to par. Theres a 990 footer but also a little finesse 167 footer over the stream for balance. Victory park should see some good score movement during next weeks disc golf marathon.
Shown here is Nikko at the basket with two guys on the tee to the left

thats a tough shot I'd only try in casual play. I'm a big fan of spiking an Innova Ram over the island onto the green. bending a putter over the expanse of water is studly. :D

Just "rode" Timber Ridge. On the front of an ATV. I bet it was the fastest round played there ever! (until Mike Randolph gets here)
That cat can certainly play some speed golf! He's probably jogging in from Colorado, just for the fun of it.
Can't wait for the spectacle to begin. Too bad I'll miss most of it watching the Ams all play the same hole...

First of all Robert, I'm talking about the PRO MASTERS division NOT OPEN, which at least gets to play their way into a pool this year.
IT IS DEFINATELY NOT RANDOM in PRO MASTERS when only TWO players are rated UNDER 950 in the pool with 1 being named DAVE NEZBITT (who I like, and a 920 guy from SURPRISE! - MICHIGAN - Home state of worlds). Does someone want to try and explain the REAL REASON - because Random it ain't, signup time it ain't, PDGA # it aint, Ratings it ain't, being named Johnson it ain't - (Pete Johnson proves that), and I'll say it again there IS NO BONAFIDE REASON!
Thanks Discette and Biscoe, for pointing out the obvious.
You could have even said I've run more tournaments in the last 8 months(5)than he's played, but that would have been mean. :D
I just wish that it wasn't the reason I believe it is! :p

Well, just let it all go. There is nothing much that can be done at this point. Being mad is not going to get anything done.
YOU GET TO PLAY WORLDS!
There are plenty of people that wish that they could make the trip & take the time off to play.
So, just try relax & enjoy it!

IT IS DEFINATELY NOT RANDOM in PRO MASTERS when only TWO players are rated UNDER 950 in the pool
Since you brought up rating, I'm curious why you think at 943 you should've been in the almost exclusively >950 D pool. I think you raise an interesting question about how the pools were drawn and I think you deserve an answer (which I don't have unfortunately), but it seems like the 11 guys rated >950 in the E pool might have more reason to scratch their heads than you do when it's clear that ratings played a big part in the pool selection.
For what it's worth, that "920 guy from SURPRISE! - MICHIGAN" has the second lowest PDGA number of the entire Masters field. I reckon he deserves as much special consideration as anyone else.
I just wish that it wasn't the reason I believe it is! :p
Care to elaborate?

Scoot_er ,
I am also staying at the Comfort Inn in Battlecreek but I don't have anyone to share the room/expenses with. I am the only Am GM from St Louis so I can't help you with a ride to the Pro courses but do you know of anyone looking to share a room?
I don't mind giving up my room if someone can put me up.

Looking at the pro masters pools it looks like they were divided up by rating with exceptions being made for people who wanted to ride together. Next year pick a high rated player and put in that you want to be in their pool and that might bump you up to the top pool.
Am masters on the other hand is hard to figure out what they did. 28 of the top 29 rated are in the main pool and then it looks random after that. Unfortunately for a friend of mine he just missed the cut of top 29 and got randommed into the smaller pool. I wish they would of either done totally random or by rating. Either of those methods would of likely put a lot of good players in his pool rather than now where he is one of the best in the small pool.
I am a TD I like doing random. I once for the first round of a tournament had to random pick someone from pro men to play with the 2 pro women. I picked Scott Martin out of the stack, who was the best player in MI at the time and probably 1 of the top 5 to 10 players in the world. He never said a word or complained and went on to win the tournament. I thought that was very professional and classy of him and I appreciated it a lot.

The pools have been set, it gives all a chance to play, and each player has a chance to move up, pending on how well you play. At the start, if one is not happy, This is where you pull up your Drawers, and deal with it. Have fun, and bag a little. Since I can't make it this year. I take this opportunity to call everyone a Bagger, and next year Ill bag with ya.
Good Luck to all

Same here except you are talking about PRO men with Pro Women, NOT pro Masters with AM Juniors - just a LITTLE different, and also the biggest stage in the world, NOT a local event - I mix players when cards overlap at my events also, BUT I ASK the players if they mind playing with ams, jrs, etc.
I never done the car pooling thing, but I think Next year, I'll say i'm car pooling with Kenny, Dave, and Avery. :D

Now, I have not played all of the courses over there but, the only one that I can think of that does charge is Fort Custer as it inside of a state park.
EDIT: Robert Morris & Coldbrook according to the book Disc Golf Michigan charge an fee. I am not sure if they have an arrangement with Worlds or not.
I am sure someone more local can confirm or deny this.

Andrew won 13 and under putting. David won 19 and under putting. David won 13 and under distance with a throw (downhill of 791 ft. (I think) That was one of the longest several throws of the day by anyone. Dawn Geist won her putting competition and got 2nd in Mixed doubles with Jeremy Koling. That's 5 world titles for team Scientific Disc Golf !!!

Jay Reading won the Pro Men's putting contest on stage in front of hundreds of cheering fans. It was a game to 21 (win by 2) with the three winners of the three "pools" of putters, one of whom was Jay.
A made putt was 2 points, a metal hit was 1 point, two made putts was 5 points (each player had two putts per round).
It was close to the end, but Jay decided after his second putt to bring the crowd into it and urged noise and cheering as he putted, which brought the energy levels up very high for his win.
What was impressive was that the crowd sensed that the other two players wanted quiet for their putts and for the most part gave it to them.
It was a nice opening ceremony at the players meeting tonight.

Have any Idea when the distance results will be posted, and why didn't they do distance on flat ground so comparisons could be made. I threw a disc off a bridge in West Virginia that went about 1400 ft down a canyon, doesn't mean I can throw far. It was fun to watch though.
Go Team Scientific Disc Golf, Stop by the Fly Mart tonight and meet Team Scientific Disc Golf, and see what they have to offer you and your club.

Field events are being processed this morning for payouts and should be up late today. Worlds rarely does distance on open, level ground. It's really called "Long Drive" not distance. One reason is that finding a venue to handle true distance isn't easy and it's possible the wind won't cooperate from the right direction. Several of the top players at all age levels typically don't participate so they don't tweak something that affects their chances to win Worlds. So Long Drive is normally what is done at Worlds which typically measures throws that are more like golf shots than true distance 360 turnarounds on flat level ground.

We've spoken with most course TDs and it sounds like everyone has gotten off to a stellar start this morning!
Weather is brisk at around the mid 60's and clear skies.
We are going to try and post the MPO rounds periodically as scores come in. The entire MPO division will be seeded into pools based on their opening round scores this morning.
All else is going swimmingly.
Distance results are being tabulated now and should be going up pretty soon.

It is David, no doubt a good answer and makes sense.
Though I will say that that isn't always the case with AmWorlds. I've noticed, frequently, the U16 group as a "true" juniors group sees more talented players as a lot of the guys that could be 16-18 but are more talented tend to just play Advanced.
Just an observation from my past few years of watching results. And it could be completely inaccurate for this year's competition (and looks that way, sick solid round from the U19 leader).

One thing that happens a lot with the older Jr's is their parents stop "sponsoring" them so they don't have all day to practice anymore. This occurs in other events "sports beside disc golf" also. I have heard where Jr's are not allowed to participate with the adults because they would win every time since they get time to practice. Getting a job, car, significant other, etc... generally means less time for recreation. If one is lucky enough to be totally "sponsored" and have good coaching available they should very blessed and thankful for an opportunity very few ever ever get to have.
One of my fantasy's if I ever win enough in PowerBall is to sponsor a person for a full year 100% everything. They get to pick their sport that they have some talent in and enjoy. One would measure how much they improve over that year. We all know someone that would be super at this or that they just don't have the support system to get them to the next level. Just looking a NASCAR, you can not tell me have the last name, Earnhart, Petty, didn't put them way ahead of the game.

With 1 hole to go, Schultz and Orum can match McDaniel's 46 (1047-rated) at Coldbrook yesterday.
They are both sitting at 46 right now, so a birdie would get them to 48, not 46.
If a 46 was rated 1047, I would expect to see some 45's and 44's from the lower cards.

Maybe the fact they are using volunteers to run ten different courses instead of just one could have a little something to do with it.

If a 46 was rated 1047, I would expect to see some 45's and 44's from the lower cards.
