Guys! Guys! Guys! I just thought of a great raffle prize! I made this massive 70's collection a while back. 472 songs spanning the whole decade. One hit wonders and all. Seems fitting considering the majority are over 40 and the tournament started in '77. If you want to see the song lists, send me a PM with your e-mail address.

It would be cool if those 14 AGMs would jump up and play with those 6 GMs. A field of 20....wow!! It would pay at least 7 spots.

Thanks Kent, that sounds like a perfectly "themed" prize.
Here are the folks who are sponsoring Waterloo so far (even if only with a disc or two for the raffle/auctions). We could definitely use some more though, we want to make this a really grand tournament. We have until the end of Monday to get commitments and names/logos for the shirt ($200 or more to get on the shirt - cash, merchandise, or any combination of the two). After that, we can still take sponsors and put them on the tee signs, in the tournament program, and on the sponsor list.
Please be sure to thank our sponsors (we sure do :))

Just counting by divisions, we have at least:
1 over 60 years old
20 over 50 years
56 over 40 years
and I can think of at least 3 people over 40 not playing in age-specific divisions; so that is at least 59 people in the tournament over 40.

Gordon, is there some sort of sponsorship package available the tells the history of the tournament, growth of the tournament, money raised for the Ronnie Micky D house each year, past & present sponsors, etc. If so, I'd love to have a copy of it. Has the idea of a title sponsor ever been kicked around? Considering the charity and the amount of money raised, it probably wouldn't be too difficult for a good salesman to go out and find one. Surely, with all the "experienced" ladies and gentlemen who love this tournament, one can be found. :)
gordonmk
Oct 04 2007, 06:32 PM
Not really Kent, but that would be something really nice to have. The closest we have right now is just some of the intro text in the sponsor request letter:
"The Waterloo Disc Golf Club is proud to announce that it is hosting the 30th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic at Waterloo Park in Austin, Texas. This historic disc golf tournament is the longest running tournament in the Southwestern U.S. and one of the oldest in the country. This year ... ...This charity is a perfect fit for the tournament.
Thanks to the support of our great sponsors, we have donated more than $48,000 in cash and supplies to RMH and Austin Parks Foundation over the last nine years."
Personally, I'm not keen on the idea of a title sponsor for this particular tournament (though I'm all in favor of it for other events - title sponsors are great!). I'd hate to hear someone say "Welcome to the AT&T Waterloo Disc Golf Classic". Yuck! :(

I'm making two copies of my 472 song 70s collection. One in standard CD format, which will be about 28 discs, and one in MP3, which will be five discs. I'm hoping Gordo uses them for silent auction. That way, you can bid on the one that works for you, since not everyone has a player that will play in MP3 format. WARNING!! This collection includes 31 DISCO songs from '78-'79 that I'm putting on a seperate disc (or two). This way, you can hurl it, burn it, or give it to some lucky ex-disco queen (not you, Harry).....or sneak into the closet with your head phones. :D You'll still get a few disco songs in the '75-'77 part that are mixed in with everything from those years. Sorry for the torture. By the way, I titled the disco '78-'79 DISCO and the rock part of those years '78-'79 DISCO SUCKS

Well, I was going to work a few hours on Friday, but maybe not.
Ok, not hearing from Dan yet, but I'll plan on setting sail around 0800. That should put me in Austin around the noon hour. We'll catch a bite to eat and could be there around 1300.

Another good laugh.......I hit a nerve on the Teams thread, and I now have a new name.

Tournament Check-In:
Waterloo Park is located in downtown Austin. It is bordered by E.15th, Red River, E.12th, and Trinity. Tournament HQ is on the wooden deck near Trinity & E.13th.
This is VERY IMPORTANT! Everyone registered for the main tournament must check-in either Friday October 19th between 1 pm and dark, or Saturday morning October 20th between 7:30 am 8:30 am. Anyone not checked in by 8:30 am on Saturday will be dropped from the tournament and the spot will be filled by someone on the waitlist. The tournament is too popular, too fun, and usually has too big a waitlist to let a spot go unclaimed. If you are on the waitlist, you must be at tourney HQ at 8:30 am. If your name is called and you arent there, we go to the next person on the list.
Please try to check in on Friday, as it will make Saturday morning go much more smoothly if we dont have as many people to run through the process.
Everyone playing the main tournament will receive a great players package, with NO money being taken from the entry fees to cover the costs.
Flashback Singles:
Friday October 19th, flex start 1 pm 4:30/5:00 -ish. Open to everyone, $10 per person. We will have to stop accepting players around 4:30 5 pm, so that everyone who starts will be able to finish before dark.
Weve set up an object course, as close to the original Waterloo Course from 30 years ago as we can; you must use the commemorative Ultrastar youll receive as part of signing up for Flashback Singles and/or other Frisbees (no disc golf discs allowed).
Results will be posted as soon as possible on Saturday. Awards for Flashback Singles will be ready by lunch on Sunday the 22nd. Leave contact info when signing up if you wont be around on Sunday.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Directions and Parking for Waterloo:
If you are coming from IH-35, head towards downtown. Take the E.15th Street exit. Go west (turn left if you are driving north, right if you are driving south). The next traffic light is Red River, you will see the park on your left (the Erwin Special Events Center is on your right).
If you are headed for the parking garage, go two more blocks and turn left on San Jacinto. San Jacinto is a One-Way street going south. Go two blocks and turn left on E. 13th, the entrance to the garage is immediately on your left. You can also enter this same garage from Trinity, right across from the deck (Trinity is a One-Way street going north). Be sure to read parking info below - we don't want anyone getting ticketed or towed.
Parking should not be too difficult this weekend. On Friday, the state parking garages on Trinity, across the street from the park, will not be available until after 5 pm. On Saturday and Sunday all of the garages will be available for free parking. For other parking, there is a small lot in the park that will be free all 3 days (enter off of 12th Street - but it doesnt hold too many cars). There are also parking meters on Red River, 12th, 13th, and 14th streets, and some on Trinity and Brazos. You will have to pay the meters on Friday until about 5 or 6 pm, but they should be free the rest of the weekend (be sure to check the actual meter for exact times you must pay).
Charity Fundraising:
We will be doing something new this year with our Silent Auction. Instead of just one auction, we are going to have two! We will have one auction on Saturday and second, completely separate, auction on Sunday. On Saturday morning, well put out a bunch of items. They will be on display on the deck, and there will be a bid sheet by each item. Bidding will close at the end of the day on Saturday so when your second round is over, be sure to hang around, make some final bids, and collect your winnings. Well do the same thing on Sunday with a whole new set of items, and well close Sundays auction at the beginning of the awards ceremony. The silent auctions will have all sorts of great things from the small, to the large, to the really cool collectible.
Giant Raffle: Typically our raffle has over $1,000 worth of prizes, and tickets are only $1.
Raffle tickets will drawn during the 4th round on Sunday afternoon, so you can buy them all the way up until the start of that round. Winning numbers will be posted by the end of the round, and you can collect your prizes anytime after that. You do not need to be present to win a raffle prize. If you arent going to be there Sunday afternoon, just put your name and phone number on the back of the ticket and we will contact you after the tournament.
Proceeds from the raffle and auction go to fundraising, so bring lots of extra cash and your check book.
We will have a free lunch for all players on Sunday October 21st, right after the morning round. It will be served in the courtyard of our charity, the Austin Ronald McDonald House. We will have a tip jar out, collecting donations. There is no suggested donation, we just ask that you give what you can, if you can. Please remember to thank the cook and helpers too.
We also will have a box at Tournament HQ all weekend to collect canned, boxed, or packaged foods, household items and every-day necessities such as toiletries, etc. These items will be used by the families that stay at the house. We will have a big box for collection, so please go through your pantry and bring out some stuff.
The Ring-of-Fire will be held Saturday afternoon, immediately before the 2nd round (about 2:30). It is $2 to play, and all proceeds go to the fundraising. You can sign up at check-in, or all the way up to the time we start it. Ring-of-Fire is a series of putting games, and it is really fun to play. It is also fun to watch, so even if you arent playing, stick around to see it.
Mulligans: Before the tournament or before any of the rounds, you may purchase mulligans for $1 each (you may not purchase them during a round). You will receive one ticket for each mulligan purchased. Take these tickets with you on the rounds. You may buy as many as you want (sorry, tournament players only), but you can only use 1 mulligan per round. Mulligans can only be used on drives, not on upshots or putts. When you want to use your mulligan, you must declare it to the whole group immediately after your drive. You then take out one of your tickets, tear it in half, and re-drive before anyone else in the group drives (be sure to keep the half of the ticket that has the number on it we will give away some prizes later). You must take this second shot no matter what, even if it is worse than the first.
McHouse Concrete Challenge: Double R Disc Golf Club hosts this fun and challenging event. It is held on Hole #5 during the 4th round only (Sundays 2nd round). Double R will pay out 5-1 if you can make your disc come to rest on the concrete picnic table. The basket will be on top of the table, but anywhere on the concrete will win you 5 times what you bet. Give them $1 and win $5. Give them $20 and win $100. Good Luck!
Miscellaneous:
The Tayloe Toe Throw contest will be on Sunday afternoon, right before the 4th round (about 1:30). It is free to everyone who wants to play, and well have some prizes for the longest throws. Great to watch as well; very silly, very fun!
When can you play the course if you arent in the tournament?
For those folks that aren't in the singles, and really want a chance to play the regular course with baskets, there are the usual lunch breaks on Saturday & Sunday when the players will be off the course. If we have any juniors, they will be playing the course then, but that is usually only a card or two. Ring-of-Fire and the Tayloe Toe Toss might affect a few of the holes, but not many.
Here is the waitlist for Waterloo this weekend

If you are on the waitlist, the only thing you have to do is be there Saturday morning at tourney HQ when check-in closes at 8:30 am. Tournament HQ is at the wooden deck near Trinity & E. 13th Street. If anyone drops out at the last minute or hasn't checked in, we'll drop them and fill their spot with someone from the waitlist.
If you are on the waitlist, don't despair. Even if you are far down on the list, there is always hope. At least twice in the last few years, everyone on the list who chose to show up Saturday morning actually made it in.
If you are NOT on the list but want to be added, email me before 5 pm this afternoon, or call me at home before 10 pm tonight (512-858-0119), or come down to the park on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
Thanks!

I had a great time at Waterloo! This will definately become a tradition for me. Thanks to all the staff. I've never seen so many spotters and it REALLY helped speed play along. My favorite hole was 15 ... such a fun throw. Plus it was right near crack alley! The best part about the tourney was meeting all the cool people. Hopefully I'll see some of you at VPO.
