All I've got to say on the this issue is if you were dumb enough to NOT price shop on these discs you deserve to pay $30+ for the same discs that I got for $17 from ZONEDRIVEN and ebay's frisbeerancher. If your not buying from that guy, your paying to much!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, I love this disc for sidearm. It won't replace my Wraiths and Teerexs but its a welcome addition to my bag.
Were talking about Champion (CFR) Destroyers. NOT STAR....

Well from what Suzette told me at Innova Disc Golf was the money raised went to the event/club for the SoCal area.
So there was a just cause for selling them at $100 plus youre helping out a club.
Not mention they average range now is $100 to $400 on eBay.
So they could have been more but they kept it at $100. Seems fair. You can buy it to throw it. I do have a usmaster cfr that I throw. The 3 rare hot stamps are collector items so they're made to be on the wall in my opinion.
Everything I sell through eBay has a starting price of $.01 penny.
I never gouge anyone; the market and demand is out there which drives the price.
I'm not stupid I'm out to make a buck just like anyone else.
Peace....

Sep 29 2007, 08:40 PM
From my understanding most of the "top pros" don't throw brand new releases for some time after their release.
In my opinion this is probably because they, the good players, like to really get to know their plastic before they use it.

I talked to Dave, Kenny, and Avery about throwing the Destroyer they all said they were to unpredictable at this point. Dave said they were to flippy. But I also watched a player from Japan Manabu Kajiyama throw it for 400 + over and over.

I threw the Star version over the weekend while getting ready for the qualifier, I thought it was a little flippy for me but I did like the flight characteristics of the disc.
I was told that the Pro Destroyer is the disc to get. I got some this week and will try them out and let you know. Please keep in mind that I throw with high speed so the disc is a lot less stable for me, so it would be a little more stable for players that throw with less speed.
I will let you know about the Pro version soon.

As long as all 18 pieces are exactly the same size. :DI've actually had a ROLLER at the 1997 VPO hit a tree, split in two, and the larger half came to rest 10 feet UP IN THE TREE out of bounds! Go figure!

The DevilHawk is an incredable disc! It will hold a hyzer in the worst of winds, ani in a total calm, fly straight as an arrow, can be used as a roller, driver, midrange and putter. I have pretty much emptied my bag and filled it with DevilHawks! Now I carry 17 DevilHawks for driving and mid-ranges and two for putters.
Of course with each drive landing in the basket, I don't really use my midrange and putter DevilHawks, but better safe than sorry. I have 5 first runs DevilHawks for sell right now, check out e-bay and they will not last. The second runs seem to be a bit more flippy than the first runs, they still always land in the basket, but first runs are always better.

WOW!
They are Control City Baby!
Low speed shots are very predictable and easy to control...
They are domey but they are mildly overstable as well....
I also had several shots skip straight yesterday....I don't know if that was the disc, or just hitting twigs the right way....
I did not have to crush a flat drive....so I can't speak for the long-range-D...but it feels incredible in your hand...

ZoneDriven has Tupelo Bay Open Champion and Pro Destroyers.
If you haven't thrown a Pro, and you like the Destroyer, it's a MUST! I've only played a couple rounds since USDGC, and I have been throwing that disc farther than anything I have ever thrown It pops like no other disc.
I have yet to throw the Champion, but the Pro is the king disc in my bag now.

The Pro is much more stable than the Star for me. The Star was quite flippy but had alot of glide at the end. The Pro was much more stable and had alot of glide at the end, but with lower spin it will have a killer stall at the end of the glide.
What I like the most is that I don't have to throw this disc as hard as other drivers, and I will get more distance out of it. Now that I'm officially Masters age, this is a good thing for me!

Anyone else notice their Star Destroyer going from overstable to flippy after a few tree hits? Two weeks ago my Star Destroyer was the perfect stable/overstable partner to my flippy max D drivers. Now it is one of my flippy max D drivers...It goes a long way now but I can't say as if I'm impressed with the durability. A driver should not change that quickly imo, I don't care how fast it is or how far it goes.

Try a Champ Destroyer. They go every bit as far, if not further, andnow they are only about $20 instead of $500.

I have seen that happen with several of the star destroyers. I have both and the champion is a little more stable at first but when the star ones get beat they are very flippy. It may be hard to believe but I have a star one that is 172 and it flies like a valkyrie of the same weight. Still goes a mile but I definitely prefer my champion one.

How fast are your guys' Pros breaking in? I have a Star that I've had for 2 monthes that is just now starting to turn more before it comes back. I usually only throw these in the open with an occasional limb hit. never hit a tree dead on.

Go Champion Destroyer !!!!! They are Awesome. I highly recommend them !!!!!
A beat Star will flip some.
A New Pro is a bit more overstable than a Star , but a Star version may fly farther because it flatens out first before hyzering back.
Try ALL Three. Each one has it's own unique flight characteristics.
It really depends on what type of shot you are looking for and what line you need the disc to hold at !!!!!
I hope that is not to specific , but true !!!
Atleast here in Southern California.

Review...
Champion Destroyers - Super fast but seems less stable that Star.
Star Destroyers - Agree they are a farther disc because the flatten out far then hyzer...
Pro Destroyers - Love them!! Super Stable version of the Destroyer I think. I feel more confident in throwing hard with this disc knowing it will stable out in the end.
My Lefty view......laters...

R the Champs more domey than the star?? How does the Pro dome wise compare to the both?? How can anyone complain about a Star Destroyer even if they do start to flip after awhile they are further and more stable the wraith.

Nov 13 2007, 10:35 PM
I think the Star has less dome that the Champion and the Pro has the MOST dome of any of them.
I'm not the only one that thinks that. My buddy Moose is a big gun thrower standing at 6' 8" tall...
He actually was the one who brought it up to me. We went out and played about 6 holes just throwing the champion, star and pro destroyer. the pro destroyer was the most stable.
Plus throw after throw it was consistently stable.

I really dig the Destroyer, and it is the only disc that I would carry in different plastics all the time....
The Pro, Star, and Champ all fly with different characteristics.....
Star for Teebird like flight pattern.
Champ for a more overstable solution.
And the Pro can do it all in different conditions....that is if you have them beat in right...
As good as the pro feels in my hand, there is something about that STAR that keeps callin me back...
I just played a tournament in Jasper Akransas, the course is called Horseshoe Canyon. As the name implies, it is a huge beautiful canyon....and when I needed the long stuff, I found myself looking for my Star rather than my pro....
But I guess that is all subjective B.S. for everyone else....

In addition to your great descriptions I wanted to add that that the first Star Destroyer I got was orange 175 "proto" stamped and the plastic had a taffy-like texture. The texture is soft to the touch with a matte finish and was nicely flexible. This disc became understable pretty quickly and now requires some hyzer to fly straight.
I was thumbing through a stack of Star Destroyers about a week ago and I found one highlighter red at 170 grams with a "proto" star stamp also but the texture of this star plastic was slightly different. It had a shiny finish and was even more flexible. I would describe this as more of a gummy star plastic. I have found the second, lighter star destroyer to be slightly straighter at high speed (more stable) and really just fun to throw because of how flexible it is - but that's just my preference. just thought i'd share that not all star plastic is created equal

I have a champion and star destroyer at max weight, they fly almost identical. Are the pro destroyers more understable? I keep seeing people say they are more stable, are you saying it has less of a fade?
gokayaksteven
Nov 28 2007, 11:23 AM
that should be correct, as stable implies straight. Unfortunately, most people use "more stable" to mean more overstable. not to get too technical, but a teebird is actually "more stable" than a firebird. a teebird is also more stable than a leopard.

My observations are the star are more overstable as my my 168 flys consistently farther and has less of a fade. And my 175 has a big low speed fade. I have only gotten to throw my pro destroyers today and there didnt seem to be much difference between them forehand( to me they went really straight really fast!) But back hand the 175 i had to throw with anhyzer and the 168 i had to throw with hyzer.

I have three Champion Destroyers from which I've removed the stamps for dying. If anyone would like one custom dyed, let me know. One is clear and two are pale pink. The pink ones could have an orange base rather than a pink base if you're averse to pink. I can go a lot lower than $25 unless someone reminds me that I agreed not to. I don't recall ever seeing a minimum permitted price on Champion Destroyers other than the minimum permitted price on Champion discs generally.

just spent 4 rounds at johns island, sc w/ some destroyers. my domey pros were definately less HSS than my stars. maybe a little less low speed overstable as well. the pros were noticeably more domey than the stars, but the stars still had a nice, consistent dome. pros definately more grippy and rippable, and flew like a new dx wraith. all discs were new 168-170. it was mildly breezy. i was getting about 450 at best.

I am starting to get a little sick of the Gateway shills all over this site. I got a Blurr directly from Dave Mac. It flies like it has a big hole in it. Possibly the least glide (without being overstable) of any disc I've ever thrown. Now stop it. I would gladly trade it for a bag of Doritos.

Now...I didn't out right bash the Destroyer. I just stated that a Blurr was much better for me. For you, the Destroyer might be better than a Blurr. To each his own on what they want to throw. And people are allowed to formulate their own opinion of a disc and compare it to what they want. If you don't like my opinion, so be it.

Jan 01 2008, 09:50 PM
When field testing a disc, don't you usually throw it next to something else? I am pretty sure that is how most people do field testing. And in my testing...the blurr was the winner. The other disc's that I tested againts it were a Wraith and a Surge.
Now, would it have made a difference if I had listed out only Innova and Discraft disc instead of a Gateway one? I bet it would have. If you say it wouldn't have then, you better go back and reprimand the people that were talking about Discraft earlier in this thread too.

nothing wrong w/ comparing discs from differing brands to one another. your post only said the blurr was better. tell us how. give us that comparison. it was just in the "tone" of the post, and i have seen this sort of gateway hijack to many times in the past [not from you]. i love gateway. just tired of the tactless gateway hijack attempts. no biggie, and no offense.
discchucker
Jan 01 2008, 11:23 PM
My apologies then. I didn't mean anything by it. The "tone" of the post was meant to be more of a true comparison. As for the comparison...the Blurr had similar speed and stability, but the one thing that I found that made it stand out more was that it is easier to grip in the hand. The distances for all four of the disc's were within 5 to 15 ft of each other. The Blurr was the longest, followed by the Destroyer, then the Surge and the Wraith was last.

I was lucky enough to run into Joe "TwisteD FlyeR" Rotan as he was driving back to OK from OR on NY'sEve. He gave me a Pro and Champion TF Destroyer. After a little field testing, I'd have to say that the Pro is less overstable than the Champ or the *. The Pro stayed in the air the longest for my rubber arm, too. The champ was longer than my * also. The star D is a first run os pig. I like the lighter CH and Pro better. They don't tear my 50-year-old arm off like the star does in the colder weather. Thanks again Joe for the unexpected equipment. Great seeing you and Danielle.

I have tried many Star Destroyers since they were released. I throw pretty much all my drivers @ 175g, so this was the weight of the first few Destroyers I bought. I was impressed somewhat, but it did not really make my bag. I got some flukey long throws with them, but I was still getting better average D and control with my Rogues and Wraithes. A couple of weeks ago I was at the store and I found a Destroyer that just felt great. It was only 172g, but I bought it anyway. This thing just bombs. It stays in the air much longer than the heavier ones, and it is definetely the longest disc I have thrown in neutral conditions. I also don't have to hurl it as hard to get the benefits. Like I said, I usually prefer max weight and I have tried lighter variants of my other molds and did not like them. The Destroyer is different. Anyone else with similar findings?

I've noticed the same thing. When I bought a scale I weighed my 175s and most were over 175G. There definitely is a point of diminishing return for disc weight. Too heavy or too light- no good. But 169-172G seems just right.

I have found this to be the case as well. Most all discs in my bag are close or at full weight but the 175 Star Destroyer was a little unweildy for me. I just couldn't get the revolutions on it that it so badly needed. I later found a gummier 170 that is also very flat in profile and it made me fall in love with the mold. I can throw it forehand further than any other disc and just love the way it feels. I also don't have to kill myself trying to throw it and enjoy watching how far it flies on a hyzer line with minimal effort.

Wow, here I was wondering If I was the only one that seemed to have noticed this. My Destroyer collection includes 3 stars, 175,172,169, and 2 Pros, 175,168. In order of stability, and this is the weird part, they are as follows (from over to under) 175 Pro,172 Star, 168 Pro, 175 Star, 169 Star. I have not weighed them myself, and I have some suspicions. I definitely crush the lighter ones farther backhand, but forehand the heavier ones suit me better. I think that the 175 Star must be mismarked, it appears to be about the same profile as the other Stars, but it will flip. The pros are domey, and I think will beat in to be very long. I carry the 175 Pro and the 169 Star presently, but I like them all. I would say that this mold benefits the most from weight differential of all my drivers, because like the prevailing theme here, all my other distance stuff is max weight. KP

Okay, that is certainly possible, I would still like to weigh'em. I guess I would have been thrown off if I had gotten the 169 and 175 at the same time, without benefit of throwing the others. I would have thought had that happened, that there was no difference at all in the different weights. My dad has a proto stamp 175 Star that is about as stable as my 172 Star.
