Lot's of things happening at Seneca this year. To start out - it's our sweet 16!! We've been running professional events at Seneca since 1990, but the Seneca Creek Soiree made it's debut in 1992, so this is the 16th annual.
NEW for this year - we are offering an Advanced Am division for the first time in several years (entry fee $45), but the field is limited to 28 players. Ams can also take the trophy only option and play w/the pros for the same $45 price.
ALSO NEW for this year is THE COURSE!! We are expanding the course from 18 to 27 holes, and are looking to have them playable by the end of April. So the promise I made last year (that the original layout would be no more by this year's Soiree) is coming to fruition.
We will probably be dealing with a lot of natural tees, but the scenery, variety, and difficulty Seneca is known for will all be there. In addition, we are a Marshall Street Qualifier (3 spots will be given away for the MSDGC), and we will also be giving away the MD representative spot for the USDGC.
Come join us!!! You won't be disappointed!!

Can anyone tell me a little about the course? I know they are changing and adding some holes and that in the past they have used different pin placements.
Is it open, tight, wooded, long, short, par 3's, 4's, 5's, easy, difficult, fun, dumb?
Any info would be appreciated.

Rolling, rolling, rolling, keep those discs a rolling! This course is a roller’s delight. It plays up and over and around some beautiful hills that are somewhat wooded with disc-eating cedar trees, and the low ceilings often demand rollers off the tee. With both pro and amateur cement tees on each hole, and three different pin positions on almost every hole, there’s a lot of variety at Seneca. The course is also extremely well manicured, with white ropes marking the out-of-bounds jail areas and all along the OB Seneca Creek on the signature hole #11. From the long tee to the 'C' pin position, this hole is easily a pro par four, and I would argue that from long to C, holes #1,5, and 8 also qualify as such, as well as hole#15 from long to B. Given the beautiful terrain and the landscaping of the course, I find Seneca to be simply world class and one of the top courses I’ve ever played.

Thanks for the review Jeff, hope you can join us in April :) There is a trophy only option available if you're interested.
Some things you should know about the new layout. There will probably be an overall reduction in the #of rollers required (or even available) off the tee. Several wooded holes have been added that will be tight and technical (a feature we didn't really have before), and the elevation changes we have always enjoyed are more varied than previously. We are designing for up to 3 tees per hole, and multiple pin placements. In several locations we are reusing existing pins and creating new tee areas - and those holes have the potential for 4 or even 5 pin placements. The tournament probably won't push the pins to their extreme being that no-one will have played them and it'll take forever. Several holes will basically be reversed (think 16-13 backwards) and will change significantly how all the cedar trees come into play on that part of the course. Overall the course will remain extremely challenging - and although we have very few true par 4's, the number of worthy par 3's keeps SC an excellent place to compete.
ANYWAY -PayPal is up so pre-register TODAY!! Pre-registration will cut off 10 days before the event so act fast!! It's our sweet 16 and it's gonna be a good year!

Actually, the MD spot was never promised to the soiree this year. i'm sure craig inadvertantly put it there. i have intentionally AVOIDED promising how it would be awarded since i was hoping to figure out a way to do a series as i think it awards it more fairly. if in any way craig feels mislead i am sorry. i only promised it last year. there are several reason why i prefer doing it this way, but that is for another thread. suffice it to say, the soiree will be awesome regardless, and it will also be an msdgc qualifier, which in turn could qualify you for the usdgc. so theoretically the road to rock hill still could run through MD.
if anyone wants to argue about it or berate me for using the spot as i see fit, please feel free to do it elsewhere than this thread, which should be about all the great thngs that will be happening at the soiree!

Thanks Craigger.
What a smart option offered by the PDGA, the TD, and the local club. By offering half-priced entry, they encourage participation from competitors who statistically have a low chance of placing, and increase the odds that tournaments fill to capacity and don't leave empty spots. I get all the perks and benefits of tournament participation, without the despondant 'donator' feeling. Kudos!

Yes we are offering separate divisions. A limited field size MA1 division of 28 players is being offered, and may possibly play a slightly different arrangement of holes than the pro field. The MPO / TO option players will play with the MPO division, wherever they may fall in the field. We are still working on the format, and are wrestling with the 27 holes, daylight, and the best way to get the most golf without killing anybody :)

The way I understand it is that the Half-Priced Trophy-Only entrants are for all intents and purposes Open competitors. They will be grouped by score and starting hole right alongside all other Open division competitors, just as if they had paid full price. They will receive all tournament amenities (player's pack, free lunch, etc. if that is going to be offered?) just as if they had paid full price.
The only difference is that if by some freak of nature one of these Half-Priced Trophy-Only entrants were to defy overwhelming statistical odds and place in the top 3, they would only win the trophy and nothing else. These Half-Priced Trophy-Only entrants are also exempt from cash if they were to place in the money.
The PDGA, the TD, and the local club are essentially taking the "gambling" aspect out of it by charging only enough to cover tournament expenses, and encouraging participation and a full field from those who want to play with elite golfers but aren't as competitive. Imo, it's the smartest idea in years.
the_beastmaster
Feb 27 2007, 06:41 PM
I agree. It's a great idea and I wish it was offered more in the area. At last year's Soiree I played trophy-only (although it wasn't called that, it was advertised as a reduced rate for Ams to play up) and was able to have a great time on a great course and get ratings for my rounds played. I probably would have done it this year, too, were AM1 not being offered. Thank you for offering AM1 though, as that does give me more of an incentive to come play because of A-Tier status, PDGA points, and MADC Series points. (Had AM1 not been offered, I might have opted to play up at Maple Hill in a NEFA points event.)
I am very happy to see that Jeff is going to be coming out to a PDGA event, and I'm pretty sure that directly correlates to there being a trophy-only option. Jeff, I look forward to a couple brews with you at the Dogfish Head pub.

I will upload some photos of some of the new holes (if I can figure out how) We got approval from the park to cut almost all of what we requested, so the significant work that's been done already will make this next push, really significant. Still quite a bit to do - but the holes that are ready - are all pretty sweet.
We will be playing largely natural tees at the Soiree, with only 1/2 dozen holes guaranteed to be off concrete pads.
Looks like the format we are shooting for goes something like this.
We'll get an early start on Saturday and everyone will play 27 holes. Break for lunch and the pros will set up on 18 holes for another shotgun start. The AM1 division will play a rolling start on the nine holes the pros aren't playing, and filter into their back nine, mixing through the last few groups of finishing pros. A slight delay in starting the AM1 Rnd 2 will help minimize the big end of day backups (we hope). Sunday everyone gets another shot at 27 (from a different set of tees), break for lunch and a final 9 for the top..........TBD. So we're keeping the full 72 holes of play for everybody, and showcasing the top few players at the end of the day. Wow - it's gonna be a lot of golf!!

Couple questions, since I'm confused:
MA1 will essentially play 3 rounds of 27? More golf for me, I'm down -- just wondering why.
Are the Trophy Only players with MPO (just trophy only), or are they lumped in with AM?
Thanks, Craigger. This event is going to be awesome.

Are the Trophy Only players with MPO (just trophy only), or are they lumped in with AM?
The way I understand it is that the Half-Priced Trophy-Only entrants are for all intents and purposes Open competitors. They will be grouped by score and starting hole right alongside all other Open division competitors, just as if they had paid full price. They will receive all tournament amenities (player's pack, free lunch, etc. if that is going to be offered?) just as if they had paid full price.
Craig, if this assumption isn't correct please let me know.

You are correct Jeff. The trophy only option competitors will be with the MPO division. It is a half priced option. Your money goes into the MPO purse and the winner gets a trophy. You play the same layout as the MPO division including 18 holes the second round as opposed to 9 for the MA1 division. :cool:Glad i'm playing with the big boys and not for the plastic! Here is the most current pre-reg list. Things are coming along great on the new course. New baskets have been delivered (but not yet installed). I may have a couple more to add to the list - need to check the mailbox.
Tournament format has been decided. All players will play 27 holes in the morning on Saturday. All pro divisions will play an additional 18 in the afternoon, while the MA1 division will play an additional 9 holes. Sunday everyone will play another 27 holes, and then there will be a cut to a monster final 9. So there is one advantage for the trophy only MPO players - they get to play more golf!!

as long as there are sufficient propagators (which it appears there are) they will simply rate them as separate 9 hole rounds i believe.

But our morning round is 27, and then that'd be a 36 hole round.
The only downside of rating a 36-hole round is it's like getting the average rating of 2 rounds, but just counts as 1 round. So, there's little chance this 36-hole round will be either really high or really low rated relative to your current rating. Considering the same is true of 27-hole rounds (less variance in potential round rating versus 18 holes), it's not much different.
md21954
Mar 28 2007, 01:51 PM
maybe they can just add 3 rinky dink holes to the am nine to make it 12 holes. isn't 12 holes the minimum to get rated?

a lot of folks find the ratings to be a significant part of what you pay for when attending a pdga event.

Now that really doesn't answer my question as the post states "monster final 9". Maybe I don't understand this because I'm not from the East. The word Monster denotes no aggregate number.
To be more clear:
How many will the final 9 hold in the Open division?
lauranovice
Apr 04 2007, 12:52 PM
agreed, however, the way we interpret it in Texas is 9 monster holes -- essentially meaning 18 holes combined to make nine loooooong holes.

i believe the texan interpretation is correct on the nature of the holes- i have no idea however how many players they will let in the final 9, years ago it was something along the lines of top third.

Here are the first pics of what you will be facing at the Soiree.
Hole 1
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p213/kakiharaichi/SenecaHole1.jpg
The basket is sitting on B pin. A pin is closer and to the left.
Hole 2
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p213/kakiharaichi/SenecaHole2-1.jpg
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p213/kakiharaichi/SenecaHole2-2.jpg
The basket is sitting on A pin. You go up and over the rise. Pretty much a straight shot. B pin is further back from A pin. There are some cool plans for this hole including making an elevated tee and making elevated baskets so you can see the basket from the tee.
Hole 3
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p213/kakiharaichi/SenecaHole3.jpg
The yellow indicates the OB creek. The basket is in B pin. A pin is closer and to the right.
Hole 4
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p213/kakiharaichi/SenecaHole4.jpg
There will be OB creek all along the left side. You can reach it with a bad kick. The basket is in A pin. B pin is further behind and to the left of A.
Hole 5
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p213/kakiharaichi/SenecaHole5.jpg
The yellow indicates the OB gully that runs through the fairway. It is about 200' to cross it. OB will then extend along the left side of the hole. The red arrow indicates what will probably be the B pin. The basket is sitting on C. A pin will most likely be the existing hole 5 A pin. This hole is a reversal of 5 (for those of you who know the course) that starts on the other side of the gully at the end of the fairway.
I plan on playing the full course with a portable tomorrow. I will try and get shots of every hole for you guys.

The original course is great, but there is some redundancy that will not be missed by most. The course did close up quite a bit from when it originally went in the ground. This gave it a reputation as a roller course. You don't HAVE to throw rollers, but it does help to reach some holes for a legit bird.
There is going to be a VERY good variety of shots on the new layout. We will finally have the tight woods holes that we never had before. There will also be some more open shots as well.
I think EVERYONE will be pleased with the changes. This course is going to kick all kinds of [censored]!

Nice map. Nice photos, too.
It appears hole 11 will become hole 14 in the redesign. I'm not sure if I read it on this thread or another board, but I recall someone mentioning that the original hole 11 would be played in "reverse" on the new layout. According to this map, the hole looks to be the original design (or, at least, close to the original design). That's cool because original 11 has always been one of my favorite disc golf holes.
You folks keep up the good work! We can't wait to see the improvements... :)

Apr 06 2007, 09:39 AM
Hole 11 will play the same direction, I have heard 2 stories on the details, one person said the long tee will be gone, the short tee will become the long tee, another shorter tee will be added and a deeper back postion will be created further along the creek. I have also heard that the deep tee will remain also thus creating a super long deep to deep setting because a longer pin position is being created.
gang4010
Apr 06 2007, 10:03 AM
Sharky has most of it right. We have already added a longer pin placement (adds about 80' to the C Pin) with the intention of adding a shorter tee pad closer to the corner for regular play. We may or may not add the tee for the Soiree. The original tees will become the long and longest option, with the A pin being abandoned and the B pin being moved back about 60'. The hole needs to change a bit due to the flow of the new course. New hole 13 plays from near the short tee of 4 to the existing #10 pins. But to get down the hill to the original 11 tees, you would have to cross over the fairway of new hole 6 - so we're routing foot traffic down the path that used to take you up between 11 & 12, which dumps you near the corner near 11 Apin. So adding a tee near the corner makes it so you don't have to walk back down the fairway. It'll still be an excellent hole (maybe even a little meaner :p)
Things are shaping up nicely, the course is planned to be set up in its new configuration next weekend.

I 3-ed the one after old 11 that took two perfect shots with the avenger ss clear of the stream and a never routine shortish putt. Pat Pitts had the low score with a 93 or 94, Paul came in at 97 then myself and Tom kim at 101. Others shot into the 110's... :DI got a few more pics I will post when I get a chance (by monday). hearing who the browns draft during lunch....
The NFL draft starts at 12 noon and the Browns draft third, which means they will pick around 12:30-12:45 PM. The first round at Seneca starts at 10 AM and will be 27 holes on a course that is brand new to everyone. You're optimistic if you think you'll be done with the first round by 1 PM; it will probably be more like 1:30.

Why do you have an MPM Division?
gang4010
Apr 11 2007, 08:25 AM
That is somthing to take in consider that the AM's are losing a round of ratings. Something like that.
I think I've figured out a way to get the Ams rounds rated - but it might be a little funky - or it might work out fine. Instead of having the Ams play a round of 27, and then 9 in the afternoon. The Ams could play 2- 18 hole rounds on Saturday - and a 27 on Sunday, While the pros would play 27 - 18 - 27. This might make scoring a little easier - as all the cards wouldn't come in all at once. Any thoughts?
ck34
Apr 11 2007, 08:31 AM
That will work also. But just adding the 27 and 9 hole rounds into one 36 hole round as you originally planned also works from a ratings standpoint.

Why do you have an MPM Division?
Uh...Because people play Masters?
I am printing up a bunch of maps today. They will either be in a box on the sign board, or just stapled to it. The map is pretty good. We have tried our best to make trails that are easily identifiable. The course should be pretty easy to follow after we do the change over this weekend. I am working on next tee arrows that will be attached to the pole under the cage, similar to what Codorus has. I am also working on temporary tee signs.
Can't wait for this weekend! I am so excited it is hard to concentrate on work. Guess that is why I am on here posting. :D

Why offer any divisions right? Because this is the Tier we signed up to run.
The Tier level of the event has almost nothing to do with choosing what divisions a TD offers. It limits you as to divisions you can offer if you choose to offer them.
IMO, your arguments about pure and true competition ring very hollow if you do not at least experiment in tournaments to practice what you preach. Even more so since your region has several 1000+ rated masters players.

Maybe you haven't noticed, but Craig runs a tournament every February, the Seneca Faux Leap, and every November, the Seneca Creek Screamer, for the last several years which are ratings-based or some other alternate format. He surely experiments with tournament formats and practices what he preaches.
The traditional PDGA-sanctioned A-tier event that the club has run for more than a decade is not the place to experiment.

2 18s and a 27 sounds good to me, Craiger. So there's one Am's support. I would rather not have to play a 9 hole round personally, plus we then get 3 rated rounds instead of 2. Also, who is the monster final 9 for? Everyone? A certain cut of all divisions? Top 4 in MPO and FPO only? Thanks.
Happy birthday, Schwebby. Looking forward to seeing you up north in a couple weeks. Team Trunk needs some Dogfish Head...

I see Mr. LaGrassa has responded for me -and correctly also. Yes - I reserve my divisional experiments for the unsanctioned tourneys I run. The one big PDGA event we have each year - honors traditional PDGA divisions. If that makes me a hypocrite - oh well. My practice of playing only in the Open Division is in my mind what keeps my attitude towards true competition intact. I learned long ago that I can't force others to do what I would necessarily like. So I use unsanctioned events to expose people to alternative ideas, and leave the PDGA events as they are.
dave_marchant
Apr 11 2007, 01:32 PM
Fair enough. I had a general inkling that you ran more events than just this A-Tier. I did not do any legwork in trying to figure out the details of your non-sanctioned events.
IMO, you playing in MPO does not keep your attitude intact. If you were a 975 rated player, that might keep it intact since you would have very little chance of cashing at a level to make any money at an A-Tier.
But, whatever. I do not want to polute your thread any more than I have with this topic. Big kudos for you for running this event (and your others). IMO, doing anything (even if you do not consider it your ideal format) is doing the DG community a world of good. I do all the admin stuff (pre-reg, scoring, reports, etc) for 5-6 PDGA events per year and lots of other unsanctioned club events, so I am well aware of what goes into pulling them off.

Kudos to the Cedar Farm Golf Club and anyone else involved in building the new disc golf course at Seneca Creek State Park. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to play the new 27-hole layout. The redesign is much more diverse than the original 18-hole course established in 1990. Overall, the mix of righty/lefty holes is fairly balanced and no golfer will find a lack of shot variety on the new layout. It was obvious to me that a TON of volunteer labor has already been put into the project and knowing the Seneca club, this will be an ongoing project for the next couple of years. When it's all said and done, this course is going to be fantastic!

Hard to tell at this point. I have only played the entire 27 once long to (mostly) long with practice baskets the week before we put the baskets in the ground.
An 84 and 83 were shot by Ian Liddell (981) and Gary Hall (not rated but I hear he is an excelent playa AND he bagged the new courses first ace with a sidearm flick shot) respectively. They were playing mixed tees. The pins are mixed right now too.
I am not sure what Craiger has in store for the rounds as far as tees and pins go. I would say a hoTT round from long to long would be in the 70's. Decent round would be low 80's.
Mr Pee Pee time up there and his partner shot a 47 last night at doubles. We only played 18 from the reds. Holes 1-9 and holes 19-27. Ross Pancaost (972) and Tom Kim (988) shot a 47 as well. The next closest were two teams at 52.
I, like Will, need to play some more to get a better feel. We have only had the course in the ground for 6 days now. ;)

i hear some young killa named erik smith will be there. i dont know him personally, but i hear he'll tear up the woods and his prowess is immaculate. anyway theres also like 10 1000 raters that will put on a good show. though the lower of the 1000 rated, i have my money on a gentleman by the name of John Jizzle G Gregory the John. or JG

Here are the other 18 minus hole 11. I forgot that one. :oFor those that know the old course, it is old hole 2. It is played the same, just becomes hole 11. Most are taken from the red tees. Some are from the white.
Hole 10

For those that know the old course, this is old hole 1. It plays the same, just becomes hole 10.

Hole 14
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p213/kakiharaichi/SenecaHole14.jpg
For those that know the old course, this is old hole 11. It plays the same, just becomes 14. OB carries the whole left side of the fairway. The old long tee becomes the blue (LOOOOONG) tee, the old short tee becomes the white tee and this picture is of the red tee. The old C pin becomes B and about 60'-70' past old C is the new C. This will be a beast long to long. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 630'-640'.
Hole 15
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p213/kakiharaichi/SenecaHole15.jpg
You can see that the OB creek bends in front of the white tee here and carries the whole left side of the fairway. This is one of my favorites so far and fast becoming others as well. Of course, hole 2 will always be MY hole. :DI think I will have to adopt that one.
Hole 16

I will be there to play practice rounds on Thursday and Friday morning. Coming in from Michigan, I have never been out east to play. Should be a fun tournament as Bowling Green certainly was last week.

There is deffinatly a fairway there Leon. That shot is from the red tee and you have two gaps you can hit on either side of the tree directly in front of the tee. It is tight, but the fairway is there. THROW STRAIGHT! :D

Correct you are Alan. It is tight, you have to throw it straight and then get it to fade just before the cedar. No problem. I only took a 5 on it yesterday. :D
Looks like it may be a little sloppy next weekend. I am investing in some cleats today. ;)

You should see it from the white tees, that tight gap is a ways down from that tee.

wow thanks to all who put in the time to get up pics of all those holes. the course looks phenomenal!! my only question now is how many holes do you think that having a roller off the tee will seriously help your odds?? trying to figure out how much i need to practice my roller during this week ;)

if your roller sucks, I wouldn't suggest throwing it on any holes............if it's decent then you could benefit on about 5+ holes.
i've played 4 rounds from the longs and my best score was an 83.........I felt pretty good about it that one (the pins were mixed).
