This just in....
In conjunction with the North Texas Series event @ Bi-centennial Park @ Crowley Texas December 2nd, Terry Adams , owner of Play It Again Sports ( Hulen St. location ) has officially sponsored a long drive contest free to all participants in this event.
The payout is as follows.....
Cash Prizes
1st place- $300.00
2nd place- $150.00
3rd place- $100.00
4th place- $75.00
5th place- $50.00

I will remind you , this is available to competitors only.
Big thanks to Terry Adams and Brice Longerbone for all his efforts @ bicentennial.

Still unofficial, but I believe the Big-D contest will commence on top of the big hill on hole 2.

BRING FORTH THE BOOM.

Nov 08 2006, 12:53 PM
Big boom off of that hill, we may have issues with hitting houses!

Awesome. I hope my noodle arm can shape up in the next 4 weeks.

Nov 08 2006, 01:23 PM
Get to work, I can promise there will be a lot of competition out there!

gregbrowning
Nov 08 2006, 01:25 PM
I don't have a chance, but I'll be glad to huck a few 375-footers to give the crowd something to snicker about.

Nov 08 2006, 01:41 PM
Off of this particular hill, I am anticipating some 600 ft booms. Possibly more depending on which way the wind is blowing

gregbrowning
Nov 08 2006, 03:06 PM
I'm gonna bring a 150 class valkyrie and pray for a tailwind.

Otherwise, I'll just bring comic relief.

Nov 08 2006, 03:18 PM
On that hill a tail wind is very likely! VERY

gregbrowning
Nov 08 2006, 04:07 PM
If my first throw is terrible, I'll have to stage some sort of elaborate fall where I stumble and roll down the hill all the way to the utility pole.

24460
Nov 16 2006, 09:23 PM
We will more than likely be throwing off the top of the hill on new hole#3. (old 2). Any guesses on who the top 5 will be in the Long Drive Challenge.

Nov 17 2006, 10:30 AM
The course is coming along pretty well.... It will be in good shape whenever the tourney rolls around. I can't wait to see what the scores will be on the new format.

Nov 17 2006, 11:54 AM
that will be an interesting number!
From the whites........... -5
Reds I am thinking even!
I have yet to see the complete format, so these are merely guesses!

So when did this major improvement happen? Was out there a few months ago and was totally bummed about the layout change, really the lack of shule.

24460
Nov 19 2006, 05:53 PM
The new layout for Crowley should be installed by this coming weekend after Thanksgiving. There are several new holes that will be in wooded areas with alot of elevation changes. So with the new additional holes, the lack of shule shouldn't be an issue.

Well I played some good golf and some bad golf in those tourneys. I think I played more bad than good. Greater chance of playing better in Crowley though.

Nov 21 2006, 06:06 PM
Arguments for both sides......

Brice is a machine on his home course, big boomin arm ....

Chris has been playing real good golf as of recent, especially when the field is stacked deep, look @ the players behind him in this years events alone, J.D. Ramirez, Mike Olse, david feldberg, steve brinster, Chris Sprague, Jay Reading , Timmy Gill, Kevin McCoy, etc......

Brice has a mean putt

Chris has a mean putt

Chris has been playing open since 04, and has racked up over 4200.00 dollars in his career. Lot's o' experience.

Brice has been playing Open since 06, but is playing on his home course that he designed (mostly).......................

Here is what all this means.... Chris has established himself as a force to be delt with @ any tournament. Definately one of the better active pro's in the metroplex. Brice had a really strong am career , and is definately somebody to keep an eye on in the up coming year . He has great DFW rookie of the year potential............ Showdown @ Crowley .....

This one will be good to watch come tourney time, wish I could be there! Have fun guys, just thought I would put my .02 in .

7557' from the reds
5611' from the white
3950' from the blue.....

Nice balance of holes for the 20 hole format.....
I was expecting a little more distance from the Reds but the technicality of the new holes will make up the difference fo' sho....

Good stuff Brice!

Everyone of the holes on the course are birdieable, but in order to birdie the new holes in the back, you will have to have a perfect drive or else you will be looking at a bogey.

Lee,

Length does not always equate to difficulty. I've seen 200' holes that were very tough 3's and 1,100' holes that were pretty easy 4's. Most course maps don't give a true view of difficulty vs. length.

Now, back the the trash talk of Chris and Brice...

I thought of a 4 some I'd like to follow for the entertainment value out at Crowley...Chris and Brice might not see the humor here, but I know others will.... :D

Brice
Chris
Dave Rose
Kent Steel

I'd almost pay just to walk and watch this group play a tournament round together :D:D No offense intended :D

Champion tees will be established on the course at a later date.

24460
Nov 22 2006, 12:32 PM
That would only work out to my advantage there....Chris doesn't get along with Rose or Steele.....He would more than likely get frustrated and be in a pissy mood all day. Rose would probably just quit the tourney.

Tom, please re-read my first statement. :D
I am extremely familiar with this course. The length of the red's has always been the " x factor " , from what I understood , the new format was going to play a little longer. But I do understand that Brice has had to make some last minute decisions out of necessity.

I do lke the fact that the area where the kiddos' have soccer practice no longer effects the play of the course. That may be the best change so far..........

a revision has been made to holes 8 and 13.
If you look @ the map you will play hole 8 to 13's basket
Hole 13 to 8's basket. This was done to keep your plastic out of the backyards of the homes that border the course.

Go enjoy the new format, a copy of the map will help untill signage becomes available.

For all of you guys and gals that came out to Crowley this weekend, I would like to get some feedback as to what you thought of the new layout.

Other than having to start on 14, I liked it. The only thing I would suggest is some sort of directional guide on #7. I love the hole, but I haven't played it enough to know where exactly to throw. This could cause a big backup in a tournament with people walking up the hill to get a decent perspective.

Nov 27 2006, 11:08 AM
Brice, as we discussed
Hole 6 red- needs some tree clearing
Hole 9 whites and reds- something to alleviate the tree lottery aspect. A small ( visible ) fairway straight to the basket would help that, just to give people the option.
Hole 10- I really like that, tough shot from the white!
Hole 14 ( old 12 ) just a couple of trees need to vanish from the schule in front of the basket . Just to take away the tree lotto aspect of that up shot.

Besides that , everything looked great. Obviously the course plays several strokes harder, which is very nice!

I am also thinking that getting some sort of water crossings for the tournament is a MUST. Those cinder blocks would work nice!

I think this weekend is going to show you just how close some of those holes are to each other. I can see the fairways on 10 and 11 having some issues.

Having said that, I think the changes that have been made are all for the better. This course is coming along quite nice. I have a feeling you are going to start seeing more people out there.

Thanks for all the hard work BRICE!

gregbrowning
Nov 27 2006, 11:13 AM
I almost got hit from a shot on 9 while getting ready to tee off on 10. I can't say for certain, but it may have been that the group wasn't sure where the basket was.

I think most of these issues can be cleared up with tee signs.

I have not heard that many good things about the new layout from the crowd that played the mini on Sat. Hope they are not correct in their assesment.

Big E
Nov 27 2006, 11:41 AM
Hey I like the new hole 9. One problem I saw with the current layout is people throwing hole 13 cant see people coming into the fairway and people walking to hole 9 to tee off cant see you throwing till in the fair way. I also think defining a fairway on a couple of holes out there would make this a much better layout. I was wondering if the tournament might be able to put some spotters one a couple of holes it might help with some of the safety issues during the tournament, until you get a chance to address them. All in all I see great potential for the current layout with a bit of tweaking.

24460
Nov 27 2006, 05:53 PM
Thanks for all the input people.....I am going to make some more changes at the course. Basically just re-numbering the holes.

Hole 13 will become Hole 9
Hole 9 will become Hole 10
Hole 10 will become Hole11
Hole 11 will become Hole 12
Hole 12 will become Hole 13

This will eliminate the crossing of two fairways.
A new revised map will be posted on this board soon.

Is there a reasonable path from 8 to "new new 9" without inadvertantly walking through a fairway?

Big E
Nov 27 2006, 06:01 PM
If people are directed around the back side of hole 13's basket along the houses this would eliminate the problem!

24460
Nov 27 2006, 06:01 PM
There is a well defined path that will go down the hill and behind 13 new new bucket. This is how the course was originally designed. We decided to change it to make the flow run smoother, but this layout just makes more sense. Sorry for all of the confusion.

24460
Nov 27 2006, 06:05 PM
We will also try to create some steps for the steep incline on New 9. I know that is a tuff hill to walk up.

I haven't heard many people talking about the long drive contest that is going to be held this weekend. Terry Adams from Play It Again Sports is putting up at least $675.00 of his own money to see who has the longest arm in the area. Will YOU be the winner.

I wish I didn't have such a weenie-arm drive. I'll still participate, but I highly doubt I can hang with any of the big crushers.

Has the location of the D contest been decided for certain?

It will depend on which way the wind is blowing.

Talking about the long drive contest reminded me of one question, Brice. Is there any intent to remove the old sign on #3 in front of the red tee? It seems to be an unnecessary obstacle to possible throws given where the red tee box is now located.

You just dont know the right line for that hole!
Here is a hint , squeeze between the cedar bush on the right , you will be happy with the results.

You have to throw understable to hit that hole . Put the most understable piece of plastic in your bag, find the hole , put it on a spike , throw it level , hit the hole and go birdie putt. Its not that hard to hit.

The course is now ready to go. All of the buckets are in the right positions. Trees have been cleared on 6 red and hole 15 (old 12). Cinder blocks have been placed across the creek for a nice walking path. OB lines have been marked on holes 8 and 14. All holes are well marked, so it should be easy for someone to find their way around the course.

I received a postcard in the mail today fromm Mace Man and it says that the event in Crowley is a C-Tier. I would only assume that this is true. Maceman is the only one that really knows for sure.

Doubles will be held on Friday at Crowley starting at 3:00. Does anybody dare to take on Shawn and I? We shall see.

I thought that you were going to redesign the entire course. Looks to me like 6 or 7 new holes with the same old course.

You had a great peice of land that could have hosted a great course. Instead we have one that does not make the top 5 in the metroplex.

Chris,

While I haven't seen the re-design, I am curious as to why you say Crowley is so bad. What is wrong with it? I'd just like to hear for my own curiosity. I have always like the course. I also like Veterans and Z Boaz, but I would not dare compare any of the 3 because they each have their own distinct characteristics that provide enjoyment and challenges.

Played the white tees today and shot -3.

Hole #2 from the whites no line. Hole #4 wide open hyzer. Hole #5 if you don't have a big hyzer no chance. #12 krap shot. #15 better now they moved the tees, but the red looked like a krap shot. #16, #17, #18 wide open hyzers. #19 trees are gone.

Not as bad as people were telling me, but it could have been great. Should have pulled the entire course and started over. Seems like the course was made twards the strengths of Brices game.

#8-#11 are nice holes, but they are 4 of the 7 new holes. Would have been nice to see a redesign. :(

It would only be fair. Just think....the last guy you saw wearing that shirt shot well above his rating throwing better, more consistent plastic.

Here is a quote from Scott Stokely, a super pro during the 90's and early 00's. Great minds think alike. :Dwww.scottstokely.com (http://www.scottstokely.com)

I get asked often, "Why do you throw Discraft golf discs?" In fact, I've answered that question so many times that I figured I could just give a short history here so that the next time I'm asked I can say, "Visit my website at..."

Back in 1992 I was sponsored by Innova Champion Discs. I think at that time they were doing a great job and had taken the lead in the golf disc market. I was an up and coming pro and they gave me a little support for my first few years on tour.

However, somewhere around 1994, for some unexplained reason they changed from a really good plastic in their discs to a really hard to grip, not so durable variety. My (and most other players at that time) guess was that they were saving a lot of money with the cheaper plastic and let's face it, less than 1% of the market is the touring pro. I'm not faulting them for making a business decision that increased their profits (I believe that capitalism is what makes this country great!), but it did make things difficult for professional disc golfers.

I have very vivid memories of the Fly-Mart at the 1994 PDGA World Championships where players were paying as much as $50 for discs that were made just a year before because the new plastic would not allow players to compete well. Unfortunately for me, with the training regimen I had set up for myself I was going through discs at an amazing rate. It got very expensive very quickly!

Right around that time, Jim Kenner at Discraft released the Cyclone and X-Clone in what is now referred to as the "Cyclone Plastic." This was a revolutionary breakthrough in disc technology.

As frustrated as I was with the cheaper, less effective plastic I was using, I still finished out the year because I thought it was the right thing to do. The following spring (I always take the winter off to let my body recover), I called Discraft and told them that I was interested in trying some of their discs. A box of 50 free discs showed up at my house the next day with a note that said there was no commitment needed from me. Just try them out and see what I think.

The following day I went out with Mike Randolph and threw them around for a while. He was already sponsored by Discraft and he asked me what I thought. The first thing I said was, "I'm going to set the World Distance Record with the X-Clone" (which I did 1 month later!).

I called Jim that morning and told him that I loved the discs, wanted to be sponsored by Discraft, and was going to set a record but I had one concern. That was the recent problem of the Innova plastic becoming difficult to handle and diminishing players' competitive edge. He said, (I'm going to paraphrase here) "I will always do everything I can to ensure that the discs players learn and use today will be the same in the future. Player loyalty comes before anything else!"

The quality of Discraft discs and the plastic that they use has never wavered, so I guess Jim was telling the truth.

Now that I've been with Discraft for a while and have learned a lot of the behind the scenes politics, I can say with certainty that I will always throw Discraft discs. I have 100% confidence that Discraft will continue to help support their sponsored players and up-and-coming professional disc golfers with their consistent, effective plastic. For these and more reasons, I believe Discraft will sit on top for a very long time.

I hope this didn't sound like a commercial. I'm not sure how else to tell the story because this is exactly what happened and how I feel. I respect the competition for a lot of what they've done, but there are a lot of other things that I don't respect at all. For example, Innova diminishing the disc quality at the expense of the pro disc golfer's game. I really do believe that not only does Discraft make the best discs, but they are by far the best people because they care about their players and the sport of disc golf as a whole. They ask what players need and try to provide the highest quality plastic for the pro and the recreational player to enjoy and utilize effectively even with a more expensive plastic.

The choice for me was really no choice at all!

dannyreeves
Nov 29 2006, 06:24 PM
All club stuff aside and just based on quality of course, I go Z-Boaz, Coyote, Beaver, Vet, Bear Creek.

I don't think that Veteran's is all that great unless you play championship pads. All the holes are too boring. Not enough easy birdies and not enough very tough 3's. Most of the holes are tough birdies and easy 3's. Very few of the holes out there provide for a good diversification of scores. And there is the fact that you throw hyzer on like 12 holes out there. I have noticed at the Vet that I hardly throw Roc at all. Seems that I throw driver a lot and even when I throw a terrible drive, I am still close enough to the basket to lay up with a putter for my 3.

That is why I like Z-Boaz and the 2 in Cedar Hill. Shot selection is huge. I throw Wraiths, TL's, Predators, Rocs and putters off the box. The course forces me to do a lot of different things to score well. Not to mention the fact that my sidearm has improved about 400% because of the Coyote. There are at least 6 holes out there that the hole is set up for a sidearm shot that has to skip at the end to park the basket. Anhyzer Roc shots are much less likely to get to the basket because of low hanging branches. At Veterans, you usually have enough height to throw an anhyzer Roc and still make it work.

Not trying to bag on the Vet or anything. Just pointing out why I love Z and Cedar Hill.

What a thread drift!!! :D

Nov 29 2006, 06:42 PM
What the hell is bear creek doing on that list ?
I understand your point about the vet, but it's the VET.
You know it intimately, those that do not probably find it very challenging . If i were to step outside the box and look in my list would probably be ...

Z-boaz
coyote
lake lewisville
beaver
veterans

cgflesner
Nov 29 2006, 06:47 PM
z-boaz from the longs has a good score spread, but the shorts are worse than the Vet.

And the birdies at the vet are not that hard in the long pins, and the Vet changes up the pins and they give the people who paid into the ace pot a chance to hit it instead of only playing extremely hard ace holes like we have to do at z-boaz.

Yeah I have had 2 47's but that is my first 46. Kinda crazy it has taken me this long to do that. Seems like I rarely blow up and shoot over par out there but shoot a decent -2 to -5 almost every time I play it. Oh yeah and I made $100 off this guy shooting that -8. :D

Lake Park gets on my list too because it's always playable (never muddy), usually has some wind, and is very well-maintained. It has a group of local golfers who care a lot about the course. it's on my top 5 for sure.

Crawford has some of the best elevation changes and variety of holes in all of Texas, not to mention DFW. Too bad it's in the 'hood where I don't even feel comfortable parking my car. If it was in a different part of town, it would be on my list too.

The Cedar Hill courses combine for the #1 spot on my list. There's no better place in DFW to spend an entire day of disc golf. 36 great holes on a beautiful piece of land. Trash can bees don't sting.

Alex Clark Memorial makes the list above the Vet because it's a more pleasant course to play. Like Lake Park, it's well maintained and the long tees provide some really nice shots. Most holes are still a somewhat-easy 2, but some become pretty tough. Nice tee signs, teepads, lots of shade... it's only real negative are the hordes of casual players who haven't a clue about etiquitte, nor are they willing to learn.

1.) Cedar Hill
2.) Audubon
3.) Z Boaz
4.) Lake Park
5.) Alex Clark Memorial (McKinney) - Long Tees

The Vet and Crowley are certainly enjoyable courses, but for me they're not worth the drive on a regular basis (I live in Corinth).

Anyway, drifting back... See y'all on saturday. looks like this will have to be my last MA2 tournament so that I can play the long tees in Tyler (which would make the list if it was here in town) :)

I received a postcard in the mail today fromm Mace Man and it says that the event in Crowley is a C-Tier. I would only assume that this is true. Maceman is the only one that really knows for sure.

Anybody know why it's not on the PDGA calendar yet?

Nov 30 2006, 11:29 AM
The PDGA is much like the government, it takes mucho time to get stuff available for the public .......

Nov 30 2006, 03:34 PM
Just to let you guys know, the location for the Big D is still undecided. Basically , it will depend which way the wind is blowing . You will drive with a tailwind. Period!

South wind- top of the hill
North wind - Probably over by the bridge!

The Tazmanian Devil Michael Douglass can chunk a disc a long way with that Happy Gilmore throw he does. There alot of big arms in the area.....you only get 5 throws though and you have to land in the fairway. Could be anybodys long drive.

I have what may appear as bad news, the PDGA is not going to allow sanctioning for this event. This is my fault entirely, and I apologize.

I did say "it may appear as bad news" but in reality your payout will not have the player fee as well as the sanctioning taken out. So you will see more of your entry fee in your payout, in exchange for points that are nearly meaningless.

Let me remind you that this "Little un-sectioned Mace Man Event" will have an ace pot that is already over $1400 as well as a $700 long drive contest. So don't let the fact that you aren't going to get points keep you away.

I want to clarify something else, if you are in the long drive contest you will need to provide your own drivers. I don't see throwing your own discs as an un-fair advantage as much as throwing something you don't know as an un-fair dis-advantage. Besides all that, Play It Again is putting up cash for you to win, do they need to provide discs as well?

You can still sign up on-line here. (http://www.maceman.com/cgi-bin/agora.cgi?product=Registration)

The snow is on the melt, see you at the park for doubles.
