Thought I would make a thread for us out here in Rock Hill to keep everyone back home updated.
I played with Kevin, Kelly, Courtney and Joe yesterday. I dropped a big 'ol 79 on the course - ouch. I did take a 10 and then a 4 on my first two holes and replayed them and took a 4 (my first ever 4 on hole #5) and 3 which would have put me at a 72. Kevin was shooting really well and the rest of us would have some good shots but then follow up with some stinkers. As usual OB is large and in charge.
I played with big Jim Oates this morning and shot a personal best of 68. It actually seemed very comfortable and was not that hard if you just throw nice clean shots. My first chance to meet and/or play with Jim and it was a pleasure. I knew I was going to like him when he told me Mitch Mac was one of his favorite people to be around.
I wanted to play the back nine again so I met up with Coda and Jared on hole 11. Coda was rolling and so was Jared. Coda shot a 61 with a double-circle 6 on hole 17. Jared shot a 65 - he told me he started the weekend by shooting an 85. I think this was their 6th or 7th time through the course.
The weather was great today and the wind was up and down but mostly down.
As usual, we will all be told our tee times at the players meeting this evening - which is about the quietest a group of 160 disc golfers will ever be. Everyone is hoping for nothing earlier than 10a.

Go get em' Jose!!!
Keep it in the 60's :D
jose
Oct 10 2006, 06:04 PM
That is the plan for me for sure. After 77, 76, 70 and 70 last year I would love to post 4 scores in the 60's. I think holes 13, 15 and 17 are playing a little easier than last year. The new rules with all of the island greens will probably even out some of those changes, like hole 3, 10 and 14. Also, you have to make it across the walking path on the drive on hole 12 or retee/drop zone. Overall, probably evens out the other changes. I know this sounds crazy but I am going to miss the "Clown's Mouth".

Okay today was better obvoiusly. The only real big blow up was a double circle 8 and loosing my go to Star Wraith on hole 5. I played solid golf today. The wind was blowing some even for being so early in the morning. I was disappointed with the bogeys on hole 17 and 18. I threw a good tee shot on 17 and got a bad break ( I am not complaining) but it felt good to throw a shot to the bail out on the right side and then can the putt for a 4. I had 4 OB shots today, 2 on hole 5, 1 on hole 17 and 1 on hole 18. I think that ties the fewest from last year.
Someone asked about players packs earlier, here is what I can remember:
USDGC embroidered backpack
Mini Driver - customized with your name
USDGC embroidered sweater
T-shirt - USDGC printing with your name, state and stars for each year attended on sleeve
Max - new Innova driver
mini from a local sub shop
millenium sticker
caramel popcorn
ROC iron-on - this is very cool - trying to decide where to use this one
I am sure I am forgetting something but that is real close.

Oct 12 2006, 06:48 PM
I will take anything in the 60's to hopefully gaurantee making the cut. I have not heard what the cut line is and no one seems to have an exact number. Most people on the staff have told me they think it is going to be around 150 depending on ties.
Thanks for thinking I can doooooo it. I am just going to play loose like today and hopefully take advantage of the good shots and other than that just put it in the middle of the ropes.
Distance is tonight and that will be fun to see. One of the funniest things I have seen here is Matt Orum throwing distance. He fell down three times throwing his 360 backhand for distance. The third time he held onto the disc and they got a picture of him parallel to the ground at about 2 feet with the disc pulled back like he is going to throw. It looks like he is levitating. The first two still went close to 450 feet.

On Monday night I went to a local establishment to watch MNF as I am sleeping all week in the van and do not have a TV to watch. Anyway, back to the story. I set next to 4 people at the bar and they were all in their early 20's. The guy sitting next to me was named "Thong" and they pronounced it T H O N G. He was asain as you would guess from his name but the oddest thing of all was his accent. This guy had the hickest most southern draw that I have ever heard. He was talking about getting in fights and how many deer he had already killed this dear season and how to clean a deer. It was killing me not to laugh. All 4 of them had real strong southern draws but his was the strongest. It was just bizarre.
MC - yes I am - he is running the pro shop again this year.

Big_Nic - I did start okay. I keep getting a 5 on hole 4 and that is not that hard of a hole. The 5 on hole 5 was great. I will play it the exact same way tomorrow. Two sidearms, one big hyzer an upshot and hopefully make the putt again.
The bad bounces and bad shots started on hole 7 where I threw it OB on 5 of the six following holes. My scorecard looked like I was making a chain of circles. I saved a par on hole 7 and 9 with the OB stroke.

I just noticed Joe and I were having the same problem today with a lack of birdies. Then I see Joe got his first birdie on hole 18. Wow that is a tough birdie for a lefty. The drive is actually very lefty friendly but the upshot could not be more difficult for a lefty. That is awesome.

I am not sure if it is related, but when I ran my Spyware Program last night I had 888 hits. I usually have about 15.
The vast majority had a disc golf related file name and I think it was possibly tied to my surfing the USDGC site.
Not saying for sure, but you might run a scan. They were all listed as Severe Threats....

Just a couple of things about my trip to Rock Hill this year.
2351 = total miles driven
1076 = miles to get to Rock Hill
15 hours and 38 minutes = time to get to Rock Hill from Tulsa
$209.86 = total spent on gas
$254.00 = total spent on things other than gas
$230.00 = entry fee
$693.86 = total expense
So, it looks like I would have had to taken 46th place to get $680 at 2 over par to break even.
Having detailed all of this, the trip is well woth it. It is a great event with a tough course that you get to challenge yourself on just about every shot.
It was so much fun going to the player party and seeing Coda get in and win the putting contest. The ironic thing is that he was the 3rd person to get into the final of the 6. So he had to go first when they cut it down to the final 3. He put in 18. JJ started real hot and it looked like JJ was going to catch Coda but then he cooled off. The rest is history.

Had a great time. We started early off with each of us getting 2 of the 48oz margaritas :Dfrom accross the road, then proceeded to go to the liquor store for the "big bottle".
The yellow rope was still coming into play later that day. It reached up and grabbed Kelldog's foot as he was trying to cross. 1 drink lost to the yellow rope. :D1 drink penalty ;)
We didn't play anywhere on Sunday like last year. Was nice to see you again, take care.

Oct 16 2006, 04:31 PM
Billy_Ho - Coda did throw for distance but he did not make it into the final 6 qualifiers. Same for Jared and Robbie. I really think those guys could have made it into the finals if they would have warmed up and tested the wind they were throwing into. I will say this, Avery appears to be a step above everyone else. He really has his 360 down to a nice motion. He was the top qualifier and was by far the top in the finals - he would have been hard to beat.
Seewhere - thanks and it is a well worth it type trip, I hope you get to make it out there. I am already looking ahead to next year trying to figure out where I might have the best chance to qualify.

Here is something funny for you guys; Kevin McCoy was testing out the innove MINI driver at Winthrop and managed to get a 5 on hole 13 which is 888 feet and a PAR 5!
To give you a comparison of how tough of a hole it is the biggest score for the tournament on hole 13 was a 14, keep in mind that is using actual discs. My boy Steve Mills carded a 13 on that hole in round 2.

Yup, I got hooked up a couple days ago.
Mitch Mac was the original Okie Rep but had to back out due to his Mother, not sure what's going on but I hope she is okay. Kev then offered the spot to big gun, Drew Etheridge who I thought would compete well out there. He declined as well. Sooooo, with the USDGC 3 weeks away Kevin asked me. I quickly said yes and began looking for ways to make it happen. It's either a bus ride or jumping in the car with Kev, CP and Ryne. The bus ride is only $130 round trip versus $415 for an airline round trip.
It's such an amazing tournament I wish everyone could experience it at least once. Hopefully I will do better than my 166th place finish back in 2005.

I understand Conners but lets take a look at this.
$130 for a bus trip that is scheduled to take 1 day, 12 hours, 25 minutes of pure hell and no telling how many transfers, pee stops and other things associated with it, Like the people you will be living with for 1 day, 12 hours, 25 minutes. :o
Airline $415, considerably a lot more money but you would b there in 4 hours. That would leave you an extra 32 hours and 25 minutes to not be sitting on a bus next to a guy druling on your shoulder and asking for a cigg. :DAir fare would only be $103.75 per hour. It'll cost you at least 20 hours in counseling when you get back at $200 an hour just to help get rid of the nightmares of the 1 day, 12 hour, 25 minute bus ride.
I think if I were you I'd take the ride with Kev and family. At least when Ryne druels, it won't smell like MD20/20 and he won't bum any ciggs either, Ryne and the bus guy might both smell like [censored] once and a while but they'll change Ryne, the guy on the bus won't even care. :D

Well, when you guys get there this year use this board to let us know what is going on in Rock Hill. The main USDGC board will get so big so fast that I will not even try to keep up with it.
I know when it is USDGC week I will get the itch real bad. After going the last two years, I decided early in 2007 to not make any big disc golf trips. This is by far the best event/tourney that I have ever played in. You really feel like being a professional disc golfer means something when you play in this event.
It will be interesting to see what Kelly Watson and Dave Wise have to say since it will be their first trip to USDGC.

That is right I remember looking at the scores with Watson at the host hotel that night. I actually think the course sets up nicely for a lefty.
Hole 1 - straight
Hole 2 - lefty hyzer away from the road on drive and upshot
Hole 3 - lefty hyzer away from OB
Hole 4 - lefty from the tee box all the way for a good position ot the green
Hole 5 - three lefty hyzers keep you away from the water ( lost more disc and took more OB strokes on that hole last year than I did in all my events combined in 2006).
Hole 6 - not lefty friendly
Hole 7 - straight
Hole 8 - lefty hyzer away from the fence and lefty upshot to basket
Hole 9 - not lefty friendly
Hole 10 - - straight then approach a big island green
Hole 11 - lefty hyzer off of tee box and then a good lefty shot to the hole
Hole 12 - even lefty and righty
Hole 13 - fairly even but I think being righty makes it a little easier.
Hole 14 - lefty hyzer can attack the basket easier
Hole 15 - ??? - is the clown's mouth back?
Hole 16 - straight but I would prefer to have a small lefty hyzer at the end of the flight.
Hole 17 - I threw side-arm last year so I definately think lefty if better but it is tough no matter what or how you throw it - Good Luck.
Hole 18 - good to be lefty off of tee box but very tough lefty upshot to basket.
Wow - you can tell I have some extra time at work today.
Dave you will do great. Although, being lefty or righty has nothing to do with the most important part of your game - PUTTING!

The rope is eveywhere. I suggest making it your friend early in the week. Enjoy your practice rounds because they might be the most fun you have on the course all week. You will play with people you have heard of and people you have never heard of before in your life, enjoy it. I played a practice round with Big Jim Oates last year and shot par on the course and that was probably the most fun I had playing the course in Rock Hill. The year before I met a guy from Vermont and we were both struggling on the course but just seemed to find a lot of cool things to talk about during the round and that was fun.
I think all of the players from Oklahoma and Arkansas should make the cut and get to play 4 rounds. I was real close to the cut line in 2005 and in 2006 not so close but I was still watching intently to make sure I was playing a 4th round.
Oh yeah, definately get into the handicapping game. I won some money last year with my second round score. You pay for that in the trailer each day before your round or you can pay for all 4 rounds at once prior to your first round.

Well the first day of practice was s very hunbling experience. the maps of the OB don't do the course justice.
The first round I had 20 OBs, with half of them no more than 3ft OB :o To shoot a 96. :(
The second round was better but not by much. At least I wasn't the person in our group to posted a triple digit 100! :o
I'm having a blast, but I have got to keep it in the ropes better than today.
Watson and Ganzel played good today, some where in the mid 70;s but it was Oklahoma windy today.

Thats no lie! Today was much better. It was slow due to all of the people trying to qualify and there were lots of them.
When we left, the score needed to get one of the last five spots was a 64. :o
Today I had a 36 on the front and felt good, then the back reared its ugly head and I took 8 OBs on the back. I was laying 2 with a perfectly place upshot on 888 and proceeded to mis the island twice
for a double circle 9. :mad:I finsihed with an 86. Still not good but heading in the right direction. I really thought I was going to be in the mid to low 70s but maybe tomorrow. ;)
I am quickly learning to hate the yellow rope. :D
Its been so dry here that some shots have an ugly skip and that makes it even harder to stay clean.

Do not let the course break you down. If you can always just think about the next shot and not the 30 OB's that have taken place in the past you will be fine. One shot at a time - it is too easy to feel overwhelmed by the whole course.
When is the mandatory meeting? You will be smilling when you get popped with your first star!

From the picture it seems like I would actually try to throw wide right and low and get a little hop at the end...
It seems like on the USDGC Dvds I have seen this hole was open on the top? That is no ceiling....
Is that right?

Almost forgot, I guess Taylor Sears drove straight through to get here yesterday about 8:30am, took an hour nap, then off to qualify.
Hole 1, he takes a double bogey and starts over, then goes out and only goes ob one time and just misses the qualifying with a stellar 67. Very impressive for not seeing the course and posting that score. VERY IMPRESSIVE! :D
So close, just three stokes off of being in a playoff this morning. :( :(
Man, that is a solid effort and great dedication...

Well I finally proved to myself I can do it. I managed to reduce my OBs down to 3 total today to shoot a one under 67. :D
Highlights:
Hole 1 - bogey
hole 2 - birdie (70ft jump putt)
hole 3- par
hole 4- par
hole 5 (1053ft) - par 5 and made it across the lake in 3. :D
hole 6- bogey cicle 4
hole 7 - birdie
hole 8 - par
hole 9 - birdie
hole 10- par
hole 11- par
hole 12 - birdie
hole 13 (the dreaded 888) - par circle 5 :D
hole 14 - par
hole 14 - par
hole 15- par
hole 16 - par
hole 17 - par
hole 18 - bogey circle 5.
Much better than the pervious rounds. Just had to keep tightening it up to stay in the ropes. But tomorrow it could turn around just as quick and be an 87. A few inches can take a good round and turn it to crap quick with all the yellow rope.
And just for your info about 17......... I think this can be one of the deadliest holes out here. even the finals of the playoffs this morning ended there with one player throwing out twice and the other only once. Its EVIL I tell you! But I have found my line on it. ;)

You'd have to give 3 to 1 on that bet. the round I had at 67 caused some mouth dropping in our group. kev thought I got it by throwing two drives on every hole. :D
and I think out of the rest of our group, Coda and Kev are the only others that have broke par. :o
Maybe it was a fluke but I can say I shot the gold course under par. :D

Thanks guys, I have no complaints today other than maybe a double bogey on 15. I didn't do that bad on it at practice. I was real happy to have a birdie putt on 888 but a drop in par is good any day!
It all started a little rough, I was real nervous on hole one and got a three and thought great, thats over. then off to hole two where I proceed to take a circle 6. :( That ended up being the only ob I took for the day. Then, I bogey one of my favorites and after three, I'm three over, then after 5, I'm four over.
I just settled down and thought about the way we play at home and grinded it out. I was very happy with the round.
Now I'm waiting to see if I cashed in the handicap side bets, I get -9 strokes. :o:D
Now its off for a couple of drinks, dinner and back to the room. ;)

Ouch! This course is real quick to remind you what it can do to a decent round. :o
My round look like a repeat of yesterday, actually maybe better. Then I have two birdie and two par putts bounce off the chains. I was even through nine, then the rain started, came down pretty good for about 5 holes. Hole 10 gave me a double circle 7, it can happen. :o I cruise through to hole 15, sitting 4 over, with 2 birdie holes to go. BAM! 15, 16, 17 & 18, I pick up a quick 8 strokes before I knew what happened. Thats how it can be here.
Tomorrow needs to be better as I'm just inside the cut line.
But I can say I cashed at the USDGC, I won the handicapping side bets yesterday. :D
The rest of the crew did much better today, with all of them improving their score. :D All of them played well.
I was the exception today, but I was probably playing above my game yesterday. if I can just get that elusive 68 tomorrow, I'm all but gauranteed to play on Saturday.
Can't wait to get another shot at this course. ;)
