Starting on September 23rd and running until November 4th there will be a 10:00am mini every Saturday at Ben Geren. Entry fee is $5 bucks, $1 buck going towards WAFDA, $1 buck going towards ace pot, $3 bucks going towards payout.
WAFDA has already tossed in $25 bucks from their own account to kick off the ace pot. The mini will be singles and I will alternate from the a pins and the b pins. No mixed pin positions for the mini's they will be in either a's or b's. Myself and the slinger will be running the minis. If you have any questions feel free to ask. until then keep on throwing.

This will be a handicapped league also, trying to make it fair, particularly for newer players as well as players that have never played competitively.

We've seen alot of different ways to handicap and we're not totally set on 1 yet, we're leaning towards simplicity - draw everyone towards par 54 - if you average 2 under par you'd have a +2 handicap, if you play 3 above par your handicap will be -3.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this? I like Chuck Kennedy's method on discgolf.com or doing it by a PDGA player rating but I think it might be confusing to inexperienced players and this league is really geared towards them as far as fairness.

The scores used will be on the honor system particulary for the 1st round, we'll keep a ledger for determining the handicap as the league progresses, its only 7 weeks long.

Ideas or comments are welcomed!!

One concern that I already have, and I don't want to be overly examining the method so much as to complicate whats not really complicated but IMO if the tee's were all consistent throughout the 7 weeks it might help better track peoples handicap - remember this is designed for newer players, 500 foot holes can discourage a new player pretty quickly! Maybe move everything long for the very last round of the league or even let the players that are playing vote on what to play.

But most importantly, it's great to finally see an organized mini with WAFDA's name on it, let's have fun and play disc golf :D

i'll start out in the shorts and we can discuss how we want to run the layout with the players that show up. yes this is going to be geared towards the newcomers to the game but anyone is welcome to play. the park has been seeing quite a lot of newer players out there, some with xp some without. this will hopefully be a way to get a good gathering of the local players new to the disc golf scene. hopefully the chance to play with experienced players and see how they play will be an incentive to come out and see whats up.

In whatever position that they are in there is added cash for an ace in league play ($25 added) + whatever the pot equals :)
If you can find time come on down and play some in the league, I know that there's bigger ace pots and "action" but we'd appreciate some better advanced types helping some of our rec players.

Congratulations to Barney for DOMINATING the mini
he could of had a -2 handicap from his HOTB scores and chose to play even shooting a respectable 49 :D

Tom should of took his HOTB scores for his handicap since he hadn't played in so long - would've been +4, kept saying he could shoot 8 down :p and I was nice, gave him +6 :) and he shoots a 48 :o

That's alright, the Fort kept the second place money with Matt Spain's 51 (even handicap)

we even let the oakies take 3rd so they could get back through the tolls - Jesse Cooper with a 53 (even handicap)

everyone else was a gaggle of 54's & 55's (adjusted scores)

Big Thanks to the oakies (Coop - fer not hitting an ace), Scott and Jesse plus those wacky Northwesterner's Barney & Collin for playin plus of course our dedicated locals also!!

Thanksgiving
Skins Match
November 24th
McClure Park 1:00pm

100% Cash Pay Out
Free CTPs
Two Divisions
Players Division Entry $90

This division will consist of at least 6-8 players to a card. Cards will be chosen on a random basis. Players will draw cards to determine who plays on each card.

Poser Division Entry $20
This division will consist of at least 6-8 players to a card. Cards will be chosen on a random basis. Players will draw cards to determine who plays on each card.

This will be a single round match of 18 holes. All PDGA rules apply. All tied or capped holes will be carried over to the next hole. In the event that there are holes that have been carried through hole 18, a sudden death play off for those skins will be started on hole #1. Any player not matching the best score on a sudden death play off hole will be eliminated from the match. This will continue until a single player wins all of the carried skins. To help with the speed of play, any player that cannot win or cap the hole shall pick up and move to the next hole. The winner of any skin(s) shall have the right to choose his order of play on the next hole. He can choose to tee off in the first position or the tee off in the last position.

The Poser division may be raised to a $36 entry, if the posers from that division wish to raise it from $20.

Why $20, ain't that like $1.111111 per hole - gonna have to have a change machine and a dremel to cut pennies in pieces. Does sound like fun though - it's hard to get these cheapies round here to play for quarter skins

I'll be with family on Friday anyway, but any locals (or anyone..) wanna play some SMALL money skins after (or during) Saturday's mini?

He's such a creative fellow isn't he.I think the simplistic approach to his numbers displays his inner self in a spaghetti type way.His association with the Bacon also displays his probable favorite thing when the munchies invade his stomache.Or is this simply a way of telling us we like pigs?hmmm?

The potential new beginner/child friendly 9 hole course is flagged and staked, check it out (by the bmx track) and let people know what you think, it makes for a fun "object" course right now, allows alot of "upshot" practice from the tee :DHopefully this will give young children and newer players a fun place to start out, alot of beginners are discovering Tilles, which is cool, but Tilles has some obvious overcrowding issues, at least this might provide an option....

The alternate pins for this layout is gonna be awesome, alot of water hazard, more trees and some "mando" fun, It'll be awesome to see a 27 hole tourney layout if all goes well.

The proposal is in the Parks Dept. hands, their next meeting is April 9th, depends on what they say, also depends on some fund raising efforts which should be doable based on the last time we raised funds for the tee-pads and signs...

we'll see :)

Wow!!!....Handicaps are cool but sounds complicated. Especially for us Okies. :(......I've got baggers left and right at my mini's..... I thought about having a rule that says if you finish first or second by 5 or more strokes above the general group that you should automatically get moved up to the next division. Or if you finish within 5 strokes of the winner of the next higher division that you should automatically get bumped up also. Stealing plastic from true novs is BS. :p

I think at Chandler I'm going to give bags of sand as trophies for the guys who win by 7 or more strokes above the group average and then award a super cool trophy to the true nov winner. You can always find em. They're usually about 4 or 5 spots back from the "Not-so Novice" guys.

I like the idea .

Hey Ditch, how's uncle Benny doing? :o.

evandmckee
Mar 16 2007, 12:35 PM
I somehow wound up with Uncle Benny :o

Actually I think it belongs to Brian but of course Pitch ditched the mini before all the cards got in (he played the full round, just didn't have time to wait on us slow pokes) anyway, we wound up trading tags a few days later..

I think Uncle Benny has to be the coolest tag, there's like 10 of them snot yellow tags and 90 of them black tags but only 1 tag has 3 digits :D

I'll almost hate losing it when I come up there and whoop up on ya'll ;)

back to the handicap thing, it is a pain to keep track of but the sad thing is that we average between 4 to 10 people per mini usually always with some true beginners, chitty golfers like me and real good players also in the mix, I wish we had enough to just do divisions but we don't, if we did, it'd be easy to spot the baggers and move em' up, besides with the handicap way it keeps the payout larger and it's very surprising at how the same players don't win all the time, it's pretty spread around, keeps em' coming back when everyone is level and has a chance at winning,....

much more about hanging and learning with fellow golfers than true competition and rewards improvement more than anything else :)

I wish I truly understood the pdga ratings better, right now I'm utilizing a method that Chuck Kennedy utilized before Ratings that is basically the ball golfers way modified a lil for DG

I don't know how many, never ran it like this before, might be more money for grabs in the handicaps, we'll see.......everyone might just want to play the handicaps

I know that there are enough people that are regularly there to compete straight up but we often times have a few newer players that might be intimidated shooting against people that shoot 5-7 down, that's why we handicap :)

Saturday August 18th, Ben Geren, 10:30 am tee-off, don't have to pay to play but if you want in the prizes or ace pot it'll cost $5

Rain or Shine

I'm not changing anyones handicap from the last mini, we played as long as could be then and everything's mostly as short as can be now,

plan is to move 1 basket before and 1 basket after the mini every week to provide some change in the course

Ace Pot's $204 and everythings mostly as short as can be!!

SOMEONE'S GONNA HIT THAT ACE

Aug 17 2007, 03:05 PM
that would be awesome, I'd just be grumbling if I didn't get to see it :D

As long as you pay, it's open to Anyone, complete, if hit you gotta pay WAFDA dues out of it to become a member if your not already ($20 per year)

there's gonna be alot of opportunities this weekend, I think 12 of the holes will be definitely aceable for about anyone that can throw 220ish feet

3 aces were hit last Sunday on this layout during HOTB

Cole started out his handicap at 57. That's good thinking. Can I start at 57 as well?

evandmckee
Oct 02 2007, 04:20 PM
Cole played scratch (no handicap),

biggest problem I'm having with the handicap system now is people that show up many months after establishing a "real handicap" and had improved during that time (alot) as the winner of last week shows.........

gotta figure out a time table for how long a handicap is good for, been pretty much honor system for new players and they're usually scared to say they're gonna shoot 15 big and say even, then they get creamed and don't understand that next time they'd be very likely to win as new players get better faster

bagging doesn't happen often though, I guess everyone gets 1 chance to bag..........

perhaps we just need more players to establish divisions

fixing to start an advertising campaign for all of our mini's, we'll see what happens, guess competitive golf isn't for everyone but there are alot of very good rec players here in the Fort that simply don't think they're good enough to compete when they really are, especially thru divisions or handicaps

Yo slinger how's the hand cap thing work if your a first timer?

evandmckee
Jan 24 2008, 08:49 PM
Whatever you shoot ya get 80.4% of the strokes to par

example: you play your round and shoot 5 big

80.4% of 5 is 4.02 so your adjusted round would be 54.98

the 80.4% thing eliminates ties (almost) and makes you have to shoot a little better if your shooting over par

if you're shooting under par you don't really have to shoot perfect to still have a chance either

it's amazing that players with 10-12 stroke differences can all come within 2 or 3 strokes usually

Could somebody give me directions to the fort smith courses coming from fayetteville?

From the PDGA Course Directory....

Ben Geren (http://www.pdga.com/course/courses_by_city.php?id=2002)

Tilles (http://www.pdga.com/course/courses_by_city.php?id=29)

Alma (http://www.pdga.com/course/courses_by_city.php?id=1838)

does that work, or do you need more detailed?

ChrisEads
Jul 30 2008, 06:43 PM
Get off on exit 20 or 21 from fayetteville just look for the sign to fort smith and then take exit 7 to fort smith and then take exit 11 or zero street once on the exit ramp turn left onto zero you will then follow on zero until you get to ben garen park on your right hand side take the second entrance into the park and follow the signs to the disc golf park but really you will want to stay left the whole way into the park and then once you get past the baseball fields you should start to see baskets on your left and right and once you see those keep going until you see a small parking lot on your left pull in there and you will be looking at either hole 1 or hole 10 depending on which way you park but you can figure it out from there.

Well us wafda guys have decided to remove all baskets and tee signs until the day of HOTB so that way only we shale know where the pin placements are. And if any out of towners would like i would gladly show you the wrong positions so that way it makes it even easier on us.

keep in mind that there are 2 pin positions for each hole, locations are on the tee signs

also keep in mind that we have secret landing zones and routes that foreigners must wear blindfolds up to game day while the locals shoot those routes, if you saw them, you could never be allowed to leave again :)

Is it just me or does it seem that James and Matt hitting ACE money always happens when their coming off a break from playing regularly at mini's !!!! ;) :D

And does that mean I should take a break from playing mini's or maybe I should just practice more !!!!

evandmckee
Aug 31 2009, 06:27 PM
I think the 2 aces must be weather related ;)

if it is from taking a break from mini's I sure need to get out there!!

the last ace I had was in probably the only non-competitive casual round I played in about a year

I think there is still a reserve ace pot at BG??

Actually I'll be at the SNPC this week-end and working late everyday to take Friday off, so the reserve will probably be hit also before I can get out there :(

Evan, I was just thumbing around the TDSA and I noticed the Mystic Moose/ Slim Shady all ctp event !!!!! Do you think that is something that maybe Ben Geren could do as an event instead of a mini ?????

I sort of understand the concept, are all the ctp's payed out in $$$$$ ??

This might be interesting to spice up our mini's for a change of pace !!!! :)

What ya think !!!! ;)

DoughDuff
Sep 21 2009, 04:46 PM
The concept is simple...you are basically playing a mini, but there is also a $$$$ amount for ctp on each hole which is paid out in cash reguardless of division. I think it's awesome that you are running local events but you should have been on the mountain yesterday...Good work...are you playing this weekend in Joplin

yes, cash ctp's

yes, I'd love to see something like this, make it happen Roger :)

on a simpler basis, I'd like to see just a cash ctp hole with our mini's, optional like the ace pot, TDSA keeps 20% of their CTP pots, something to consider, throw it out there at some mini's and see if some players bite, I'm all about spice :D
