carion creatures? You mean like buzzards?

They are mean looking. I did a google search and found out that they smell, can eat 80% of their weight in one sitting, will eat each other if need be, and are basically banished to a far corner of the world. The scientists are still unsure if they can hit tight lines or putt under pressure.

Yes like buzzards. They only eat dead and decaying materials! I was watching a program on PBS, and a komodo dragon had hollowed out some poor 4 legged creature, its insides were this nasty black goo. Awesome!
Putting under pressure, probably not , hard to putt from under the basket

Too funny! To recap last Sunday at Wimberly:

Deer jumps over hood of vehicle traveling at 70mph on the way to Wimberly
Wallbanger tests his Civic to see if airbags work (they don't)
Large tree falls on the hole we just finished (phewww!)
Anthony hits deer at 70mph (well, it's Anthony so it was more like 85mph) on his way home

I can't wait to see what happens this weekend!

That deer sure was in a hurry to get in a round at Wimberly. If you had hit him, a colony of lizards on their migration to Wimberly would have slithered out of the bush to devour him.

Bummer, Bummer! :(

After all my smack talk (and admittedly, I don't do it much, but I've sure enjoyed it this time :D), I won't be able to play this weekend.

Mom went into the hospital suddenly last week and ended up having heart bypass surgery yesterday. She is still in ICU and is going to be spending a good while in recovery. Luckily, the surgery went well and she is recovering as well as can be expected at this point, but I'm going to be spending a lot of time at the hospital with my brothers looking after her.

Big apologies to my teammates, but family has to come first, and moms have to come firstest most of all.

Waterloo is just going to have to go out and win one for the Gordo :D

Good luck to everyone, and remember to keep that smack flowing!

First off our Adv players have 4 rounds on their home course on their player ratings which mean nothing. And you guys were not going to let our Adv women play because she acidently signed up FPO, why would that not be the same for this guy. And this guy has been playing open since I have been playing disc golf.

First off our Adv players have 4 rounds on their home course on their player ratings which mean nothing. And you guys were not going to let our Adv women play because she acidently signed up FPO, why would that not be the same for this guy. And this guy has been playing open since I have been playing disc golf.

And that is not pro 2, that is $38 cash at world doubles which is a major. :(

Now for a little scheduling.

We'll post a final schedule tomorrow, but here's how it looks now. Again, the schedule is subject to change.

Pools A, B, C, and F (F is the Emerging teams) will have a players' meeting at 8:00. First round at 8:30. One team from A will have a first round bye, and two teams from F will have first round byes.

Pools D and E will meet at 9:15 and tee at 10:00.

Teams in Pool A will play four 9-hole matches Saturday.

Teams in Pools B,C,D, and E will play three 12-hole matches. The five winners will advance. The other 16 Established teams will play for the final 3 spots in the Mixmaster.

During the weekend, every Emerging team will play every other Emerging team. The top two will play a 9-hole final.

In order to fit every one, we will be setting up a temporary 9 holes on the back side of Circ Hill. Most of the teams in A and F will get to play it Saturday. Other teams may get to play it Sunday. Of course everyone can play it when it's not being used.

Special thanks to Patty, Shannon, and Mitch, who kept pushing me to find a way that everyone could play more golf this weekend. With their dedication and creativity, we finally got it worked out.

More tomorrow.

Lots of fun this weekend...

I'm Jealous.

My hat's also off for you. You guys work so hard to make these teams somewhat happy.

I know what kind of work you have put into this as well as the work ahead.

Wish I was there.

I'll be doing the Frozen Turkey Turney here this weekend. My job is pretty simple,... Deal with the whining golfers and try to keep the fire barrel going with the winds we're getting.

Good luck to you John and you're outstanding staff.

At least it could be worse,....

Anchorage weather forecast:

Tonight... Partly cloudy in the evening then becoming mostly clear. Lows 5 below to 5 above. Northeast wind 10 to 20 mph. Wind chill readings 5 below to 20 below zero.

Friday... Mostly sunny. Highs 5 to 15 above. North wind 15 to 20 mph. Wind chill readings 5 below to 20 below zero in the morning.

Friday Night... Mostly clear. Lows 5 below to 5 above. Northeast wind 15 mph.

Saturday and Saturday Night... Mostly clear. Highs in the teens. Lows 5 below to 5 above. North wind 15 to 25 mph.

Sunday and Sunday Night... Mostly clear. Highs 5 to 15 above. Lows 5 below to 5 above.

Save me a disc, I've got a nice Cow hat for you as well as a Turkey Turney Disc, I'll trade ya.

Peace, Disc, TEAMS!! :D

PS. SEND SOME HEAT!

How will byes be determined for each of the pools you mentioned earlier (I think it was A, B, and F)? Previous finishes?...total player rating?

johnrhouck
Nov 17 2006, 11:32 AM
Jon, those byes are not earned -- everyone gets treated the same.

They happen because there are an odd number of teams in the pool, or because there are more teams than can fit on the course. There is nothing new or unusual about this.

For example, here's how a pool with 5 teams (Pool X) might play out:

1 1 vs 5 2 vs 4 Bye: 3
2 1 vs 3 4 vs 5 Bye: 2
3 2 vs 5 3 vs 4 Bye: 1
4 1 vs 4 2 vs 3 Bye: 5
5 1 vs 2 3 vs 5 Bye: 4

For this weekend, Pool A has five teams, so they can't all play at once. For Pool F, they have 8 teams, but we can only fit 6 on the course at one time.

The only earned byes are Sunday morning, when the winners of the 5 Established pools get to sleep while the other 16 teams play the Mixmaster.

Hope you get to sleep...

Oooooooooooo Big Spring.

i remember one drunken night at San Saba a guy from Team Big Spring was trying to dump his firewood out of his truck by flooring it in reverse and then slamming the brakes to, in theory, slide all the wood out of the truck right by the fire.

seemed like a good idea at the time. :D

Advancing from the Mixmaster are...

Live Oak 90
Round Rock 2 92
Circle C and Waterlooo tie at 94

That leads to the most exciting playoff format in disc golf: sudden death 9-person alternating. Circle C prevails.

The Pool F issue was our mistake. It was a tie, and it's been corrected.

No Bass got smoke all I am saying is that you can lose all you want in the prelims and still go on to win as long as you make it passed the mixmaster. If you lose two matches as a teasm you are out. So if you lose your 1st two you are gone and if you are undefeated on saturday and then lose a match on sunday you still have a chance.

it is just like the college world series...the winner of the losers bracket plays a heads up game with the winner of the winners bracket. everything is double elimination up to that point. but the winner of the winners bracket who loses in the championship game only has one loss and a second place trophy. those are the well-established and published rules. bass just needs to step up on sundays from now on i guess...

it is just like the college world series...the winner of the losers bracket plays a heads up game with the winner of the winners bracket. everything is double elimination up to that point. but the winner of the winners bracket who loses in the championship game only has one loss and a second place trophy. those are the well-established and published rules. bass just needs to step up on sundays from now on i guess...

No I think Bass needs to go with my idea and not even play on saturday so that they are fresh on sunday.

Z-Boaz 5, Round Rock 4.

Congratulations to the new champs.

Big Spring and San Angelo Concho are playing right now in the Emerging Finals.

There should be double elimination or something. Team Bass gets knocked out again with a 3-1 record while Z-boaz loses in the prelims and wins with a 4-1.

You are an idiot Matt. We had a 3-1 record going into the match with Bass, and we won our bracket just like Bass. Don't be mad just because we layed the spank down on both your Houston teams. 9-0 says it all.

And c-ware if you would have beat the other two teams as in our bracket as bad as we did then you would of won the tie breaker. Didn't you loose to the team that we beat 9-0.

speaking of dragons, my husband, Don Q, said one of the biggest highlights of the weekend was playing with/against Vinnie. Don lost against Vinnie, of course, but completely enjoyed it. You are one of the best guys of disc golf. :)
My parents and I (and of course little Ian) went to Live Oak for the weekend. My uncle died and the funeral was somewhere close to Randolph AFB. On the way down, I just had to say as we passed through, "we're in Round Rock...home of the Dragons, Vinnie Miller, and Dell Computers." Sorry to say, my parents weren't impressed.
Then, we arrived at Live Oak too early for us check in. I happened to have booked a suite at the Clarion. So, I said "that's okay, the disc golf course is around the corner. " Unfortunately, again they weren't impressed.

oh, and John, Don and I were wondering if there has ever been any other player that has won teams four times. Don won three times with Arlington A, and now with
Z-Boaz.

Don also mentioned that there were many dogs there this weekend. All seemed well behaved. He said that although it upset some cards behind them, he was impressed by the dog that carried the big long branch.

Sorry I could not be there. It sounds like there was a bunch of fun and great golf. So, now that teams is at Wimberley instead of San Saba, there's no rain??? I'll never forget the year EVERYONE got stuck in the mud leaving San Saba. :(

BTW, Z-Boaz guys, you need to be quiet and be gracious winners without giving everyone else a hard time. As the winners, you should expect others to give you a hard time. Just take it as a gracious winner with class would. Congrats and enjoy the win.

I'm not sure how the ties were broken this year, but in past years John would use head to head against the ties using the point differential. A 4-3 give the winner team 4 points and none for the loser since the last three holes were conceded, a 1 up give the winners 1 etc. for all nine matches or 18 if threeway tie. So how badly you beat your opponent matters for tie-breakers :o, You barely sqeek the win of 9 and lose horribly on 6 and tie 3 in head to head you probably lose the tie-breaker

Matt, shut up.

The format is fair. It is known in advance how to win the whole thing. Saying a team should rely on winning the MixMaster is completely assinine. Win the pool, and then keep playing on Sunday.

spartan
Nov 20 2006, 11:20 AM
No Bass got smoke all I am saying is that you can lose all you want in the prelims and still go on to win as long as you make it passed the mixmaster. If you lose two matches as a teasm you are out. So if you lose your 1st two you are gone and if you are undefeated on saturday and then lose a match on sunday you still have a chance.

Houck and staff dont let this event die. So many great memories are made and new relationship kindled. Next year will be bigger than the nextSo John you need more courses.
Congratulation to the ChampsThey played with integrity and were a great representative of their home course.
I am very proud to be a part of you boys from ROUND ROCK, by far the proudest team and the most supportive group outside of real family.
Some highlights for me were playing with true gentlemen, watching James carrying Ians bag up the hill like a true donkey (pack mule),having some very stimulating conversations with T.D.s from around the state about the future of Texas Disc Golf, watching Waterloos firework show and hanging with some of the greatest guys one can call friend.

Nov 20 2006, 12:42 PM
As far as the discussion about not needing to play on Saturday, I have to greatly disagree.

Getting out of the mix-master isn't easy at all. If you do make it out, you might gain an advantage for your next match because you are all warmed up and in gear whereas someone who won their pool the day before may not be (unless they have prepped and warmed up like they should :o). Then again, you have to get up much earlier and if you go deep into the playoffs, fatigue can become a factor.

I think the format is great, and should stay as it is. Everybody has a chance to win their pool, and for those that don't, everyone still has a chance to make it to the playoffs, where sudden death prevails.

Long Live Texas Teams! :D

To john and team (the most interesting collection of hair-do's this side of the flock of seagulls)

Thank you very much for such an enjoyable weekend. You worked out a deal to have a warm sun and no wind, everything ran smoothly (only getting behind when the masters had to take bathroom breaks and after-lunch naps), the courses looked great and we won. All in all it was well worth the time, effort and money. I have never played in a match play event before and i was very much looking forward to this weekend. My expectations were exceeded by you and your staff. Thank you very much.

Interesting. The options we were given by Houck were:
1. Play for 3rd.
2. Not play and consider it a tie. (Which happened last year as well I heard.)

Not that it matters, but given those options we decided to go home.

Thanks, everybody, for a great weekend.

I want to specially thank the whole CP crew: Phillip, Thomas, Nathaniel, Zach, Patty, Mitch, and Shannon. From cleaning the courses and getting the tees upgraded... to staying in contact with all the captains and answering questions... to creating the logo and counting the shirts... to helping revise and finalize the rules and procedures and schedules... to making scorecards and pool sheets... what a great job. As hard as it is to put this one together, I think we all agree it's the most fun to run.

Thanks to the San Marcos guys for their help getting it all together, too.

And thanks to the players for leaving the property in good shape, for your great spirit, and for being able to play hard and maintain sportsmanship. It makes it worthwhile for us to see soo many people having so much fun. You restore my faith in the goodness of disc golfers.

All in all, I think this must have been the smoothest TTC ever. Considering that it was also the biggest, that's saying something.

Congrats to the Big Spring boys. The competition in the Emerging division was amazing. Captain Cam, start negotiating with the Brooks family now, so we can see you in the Establsihed division next year.

Has anyone ever won four times? Good question -- we'll have to look into that. My question today is: has anyone ever gone 8-0 in one weekend? I don't think so... until yesterday.

Well done, Z Boaz. Your pool you won by just a nose, but you took down Bass with body blows. Once upon the path you chose, your fire from within arose. Now everyone in Texas knows, against this team you dare not doze. Sorry that this rap is prose, but sometimes that's the way it goes.

This is the second year in a row someone has incurred damages due to the firework hooligans, and that is pretty uncool.
Just because those hooligans yelled waterloo's name (last year they used Round Rock's 'yell' to redirect the blame) doesn't mean it was actually Waterloo
So, you guys need to be 'thanking' the hooligans, not Waterloo or WaterToo. Everyone wants Teams to keep growing & and everyone wants to have fun, but there should still be respect for the Ranch (& its owner)& for the other golfers/campers who choose not to engage in hooliganistic activities. Last year it was holes getting burned into tents, this year a vehicle was damaged, when will it stop? When someone gets hurt? When the Ranch is burned to the ground? If you all love this place as much as you say you do, you'll have more respect for it in the future (that way, it will be here in the future.)

A quick word on tie-breakers. We hate to use them, but sometimes we have no choice -- some teams sinmply refuse to win outright.

By the way, have you ever seen the NFL's tie-breakers? We posted exactly how we broke the tie in Pool C Saturday night. It was with the Pool C results -- I'm sorry if it wasn't easy enough to find.

There were three teams at 2-1. So yes, Round Rock 2 would say "how can Z Boaz win if we beat them?" Well, if we declared RR2 the winners, then it would be Moffitt 2 saying "But we beat RR2!"

So, when three teams are tied, we use margin of victory. Here's how it went:

Tie-breaker
RR2 beat Z Boaz by 1
Z Boaz beat Moffitt by 5
Moffitt beat RR2 by 2

That gave us a point differential of:

Z Boaz +4
RR2 -2
Moffitt -3

So Z Boaz advanced.

As for the big picture, Saturday is the regular season. Sunday is the playoffs, starting with the wildcard round.

As always, we love to hear constructive input and better solutions. Yesterday, we instituted the "Jowers Principle" for the finals, using a coin flip to decide which team goes on top of the card.

And we'll try to get a port-a-potty up on the hill for the female golfers next year.

And a quick word on fireworks. I really appreciate the Dragon representatives (Blair and Smitty, if I recall correctly) coming up Friday night to ask if they could set off some fireworks. When I said that Patty had already posted the "no fireworks" rule, they kindly agreed, and everyone went home feeling listened to and respected.

I'm sorry to hear that others didn't behave with the same kind of decorum.

thanks for the clarification John. I was glad to see that it was not holes one or holes with a "C" as almost everyone I asked had no idea how to score the C as in which box and what does C really mean. example RR2 Pro 1 gets a birdie and Zboaz Pro1 has a drop in 3 but he already cannot win the hole so is that scored 2 for RR and 3 For Zboaz or since Zboaz did not putt out since he aready lost the hole means he Conceded?

Wow what an event!! I had an absolute blast and I know that all the members of my team did as well! The weather was perfect. Thanks to John and all the Circle R staff!! Especially to Farmer Phil! (Only Phillip will know what this reference means). To Z-Boaz: My hat is off to you! You took down my team with authority and we had been rolling until that point. I enjoyed the match that I played against Chris F. I had a chance to push the match on the last hole but the combination of a power line and a solid putt by Chris had other plans. a. it was joke and should of only been played by the emerging teams

I'm glad we didn't have to play it, but kudos to the staff for the idea.

The back nine or "Back Fifty" as it was referred to, was decent considering it was designed over the past couple of weeks. Everything was cleary marked and a map on the back of the score card was nice. You could even drive and park your car next to the barn by hole one. It lacked length overall, and there were a lot of thumbers (I think I threw 5 thumbers of the box during our Quarterfinal match). There was quite a bit of space not being used which made wonder how sweet this portion of Wimberley could become. What are the chances that this course (maybe not the exact layout, but something similar) could become permanent? With the record turnout for teams this year, why not incoporate an extra nine (or eighteen) permantly at Wimberley? Just a thought....

And the thanking continues...

Thanks to Waterloo for letting us use their baskets.

Thanks to Liam Sweeney, who came out to help all day Saturday. Even though he had never been to a disc golf tournament before -- even though he's never played disc golf -- he was a huge help. I think we made a convert. See you on the course, Liam.

Thanks to Matt Millholland for signing up with the tee box crew.

Thanks to Texx Brushwood for spotting on 18.

And thanks, as always, to my wonderful queen Divya for all her love and support (and for making scorecards, course listings, and organizing this weekend). She's going to be a huge asset to the disc golf world in the coming years.

Thanks again to all the players who made the weekend so much fun for their teammates, their opponents, and the staff.

Its in the top 30, but I wouldn't get a hard on over it.

Next year Team Ultimate Fuego

Congratulations to Zboaz, see you guys next year and bring your vaseline.

....Is it to soon for trash talk?

Yeah is the McKinney course in your "Top 30?" lol

I would put Z in my top 5 in the state. Definetly the best course North of Waco without a doubt (until KeOhana is done /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)

The McKinney course is a little weak, I play here because I live here, but with J.D., Giggler, and Nolan. It has the best local talent.

Don't know about Giggler but it is not Nolan's or JD's home course.

It's the closest 18 holer to JD and maybe Nolan now

What makes a course the home course
Closest or most often played ;)

Never thought about that. I lived on the greebelt course, but considered Lake Lewisville my home course because I played there most often.

I know Nolan moved up here recnetly. It's just a little ironic that the shortest course has these players.

Wow! What a busy day at work I'm having.

wow...top 30?
a) are you retarded?
b)name 29 better courses
c)are you retarded?

Im not retarded, just mentally unstable.
Zbaoz is one of my favorite courses. I just wish it was closer.
It's funny how everyone thinks their home course is the best.

The mighty - Z is my home course, and yes it is one of the best.............

Look @ the bios of the Innova team, count how many times world class disc golfers list the Z as one of their favorites......

Hard to argue with that...........

Only course that comes close to the Z , in a reasonable drive is the " BEAST "

Only problem with the " BEAST " ........ Their local scene sucks. Any time I have ever been to Waco, the only disc golfers I see are ALWAYS on the west side of the river. SISSIES! Big props to the Beast, that is one hell of a course, too bad nobody is there to apprecaite that!

Home course is not defined by the closest to your house. It is the course you play the most frequently.

I think that the Coyote course is Cedar Hill is 2nd best course in our area. Even though it is probably 6 strokes easier than Z-Boaz longs, it is still a great course, with pretty much every shot in the game needed to stay in the fairway.

I think the pair of courses at Cedar Hill provide a much broader challenge than the Coyote alone. I've only played there a couple of times, but the place knocked my socks off with the scenery and the challenges presented by the two courses.

I have to disagree, though, about the Coyote requiring "every shot in the bag" or whatever--from what I remember, throwing a Roc/putter nice and straight down the pipe worked on a bunch of holes. One way of putting it might be: if your drives deflect and go off the trail, you will need every trick shot in your bag to get your par putts. If you want to throw some drivers, you will want to play the Beaver, too. Regardless, definitely play Cedar Hill! The place is just plain awesome.

Happy Turkey-day everyone!

I don't think that z-boaz is one of the best in the state. Don't get me wrong it is a fun course, but the score spread is not there. Most holes if you mess your drive up leaves you with an easy three, and if you have a good drive you have a 20-40' birde putt.

I would have to put Circle C, The Beast, Tom Bass, Circle R, and Moody's ahead of Z-Boaz even though z-boaz is my home course.

Coyote has forced me to work on my sidearm a lot. Most course has 1 or 2 holes that call for a sidearm off the tee but that is it. I throw it 6 times off the tee on the Coyote.

My point is, that course is making me a much better golfer by forcing me to learn more shots. Moreso than any other courses in the metroplex.

once you play Wilco you will probably add it to the list -new course in Williamson County (very similar to rolling meadows (circle R));however I would put zboaz ahead of Tom Bass.

Z Boaz... Cedar Hill...Lake Lewisville... take heart, DFW golfers -- you'll soon have another fine course to debate.

Stay tuned for details. I can tell you that this one will be one of my top 10 favorites in Texas.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Sounds like another great thank for the DFW golfers to be thankful for - can't wait to hear more John

John are you refering to the completion of Eagle Ranch, or is there going to be an additional course in Funky Town. Personally I would like to see both!

Eagle Ranch has a lot of potential, but I do not think that the Neighborhood comitte will allow you to utalize all that property . It is quite a shame! Every time I go there all I can do is stare @ the ball golf course. There is a lot of really neat elevation . Too bad the country club owns it!

Matt, shut up.

The format is fair. It is known in advance how to win the whole thing. Saying a team should rely on winning the MixMaster is completely assinine. Win the pool, and then keep playing on Sunday.

Double this and I call Bass my home. Even more so, Z-Boaz delivered when they had to. It's sort of like the Yankees used to be. Do just enough to get to the playoffs then crank it up a notch. I'd call what Z-Boaz did smart golf!

We did not have to come out of the mix master so I don't know what you guys are talking about.

We lost our first match by 1 point with a couple of players giving up a lead in the last couple of holes.
