Its Father Dave McC-Note Time :D
The 29th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic is rapidly approaching. As usual, the tournament will be on the third weekend in October (Oct. 21-22, 2006). Time is running out for you to reserve your spot in this incredibly popular tournament. About twenty people have already taken the Father Dave McC-Note Challenge to guarantee their place. Dont wait too long and risk missing out. Last year when the tournament was opened up for general registration, the remaining spots were claimed within 10 days.
The way the Father Dave McC-Note Challenge works is this: Send the Waterloo Club a check for $100 now. Your spot in the tournament is then guaranteed. When fees for the different divisions are set, we will deduct the following from your $100: your entry, ace pot, ring-of-fire, and mulligan fees. All the money left goes directly to the charity. In 2005, there were 53 McC-Note Challengers (over half the field). This added over $2000 to the total charitable donation!
To clarify something that has come up occasionally: this money saves your spot, not a spot. Once the tournament fills up and there is a waitlist, if you have to cancel you cant just give your spot to someone else. As with any cancellation, the spot goes to the next person on the waitlist. As the tournament gets close, the people on the waitlist eagerly await any and every cancellation. If you do have to cancel, you will receive a refund of everything except what would have gone to the charity (and that money will still be added to the donation).
Flyers for 2006 (and thus open registration) probably wont be out until sometime late in August or early September, so dont wait send in your Father Dave McC-Note now (mail to WDGC, PO Box 33531, Austin, TX, 78764 - payable to WDGC). See you at Waterloooooo! :D

Just 2 months away from Waterloo now, and we really need to make a big push to get sponsorship. We have to raise $750 cash just to cover the park rental fee. The only good part about that is the Parks Dept. "sponsors" the tournament by letting us pay that money to the Ronald McDonald House (instead of to the city).
All the info is below. If you can sponsor us, please let us know, we would really appreciate it. What we also need is for people to take sponsor letters around to local businesses and ask for support. If you can do this, please email me at
[email protected] and I'll send you a copy of the letter, all nicely formatted.
Cash sponsorship always rules! But we need lots of merchandise sponsorship too, so that we have plenty to put in our raffle, silent auction, ring-of-fire, CTPs, player's packages, random give-aways, etc.
Thanks!!! :D

Dear Sponsor,
The Waterloo Disc Golf Club is proud to announce that it is hosting the 29th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic at Waterloo Park in Austin, Texas. This historic disc golf tournament is the longest running tournament in the Southwestern U.S. and one of the oldest in the country. This year the dates are set for October 21-22, 2006. The 29th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic will again benefit the Austin Ronald McDonald House (RMH).
The RMH is a wonderful non-profit, charitable organization that provides a home away from home for families with critically ill children undergoing treatment at area hospitals. The RMH in Austin houses thirteen families at a time, and depends on contributions to take care of these families. This allows parents the chance to be very close to their children when they are needed most. RMH is located on the edge of the park, the course winds all around it, and it provides a very special kind of service. This charity is a perfect fit for the tournament.
Thanks to the support of our great sponsors, we have donated more than $41,000 in cash and supplies to RMH and Austin Parks Foundation over the last eight years. The goal for 2006 is to raise $10,000. Wont you please help by being a sponsor of this wonderful tournament? Sponsorship can be in the form of cash, merchandise, or a combination of the two. The different levels are:
For a sponsorship of $200 or more: your logo or name on the back of the official tournament shirt, on the club web site, plus on a tee-box sign. This sign will be seen by all of the competitors each time that they play the course. Your name will also be added to the Sponsor List that will be displayed at the course and distributed to the players, the general public, and the media.
For a sponsorship of $100 - $199: your name on a tee-box sign, web site, and Sponsor List.
For a sponsorship of up to $99: your name on the web site and Sponsor List.
For more information, please contact Gordon Maxim-Kelley at (512) 858-0119 (
[email protected]) or W. Ray Murray, Jr. at (972) 398-8140 (
[email protected]). Please send all sponsorship to Waterloo Disc Golf Club, PO Box 33531 Austin, TX, 78764 (checks payable to WDGC). If you wish, you can make your check payable directly to Austin Ronald McDonald House in order to get the tax benefits of a charitable donation. Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Gordon Maxim-Kelley

Just a reminder that the club is having a meeting this Thursday, September 7th, 7 pm at Old Alligator Grill (on the corner of South Lamar and Manchaca). You dont have to be a member to attend. Discussion will include the 29th Waterloo Disc Golf Classic, Projects at Circle C and Pease Park, the possibility of a Fall League, and the clubs Ace Race.
This will also be the first opportunity to sign up for the 29th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic. Well start accepting entries at the end of the meeting.
Below are the people who have already sent in their $100 for the Father Dave McC-Note Challenge. If you think you already paid but arent on this list, please contact me right away. If you still want to reserve your spot before registration opens up, send in your check now. You can still take the Father Dave McC-Note Challenge after registration opens (so youll still be supporting the charity and still getting some kind of McC-Note goodie), there just wont be the added benefit of having your spot guaranteed.

Here is the tournament flyer the 29th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic. General registration starts today. To sign up and pay in person, come to the club meeting tonight (Thursday, Sep 7th, Old Alligator Grill, 7 pm). Otherwise, you have to register by mail and your payment must be included. We will use the postmark to determine the date of entry. Ill try to get a confirmation emailed to you shortly after I receive your entry (or call you if you dont have email).
Well try to get some entry forms to Moodys trailer at Pease Park and to the Disc Nation store on Slaughter Lane so you can pick them up, but dont try to register in person there, or by handing your entry to a club board member. You must register by mail. You can also download the form from the clubs website: www.austindiscgolf.org. (http://www.austindiscgolf.org.) Sorry, but the tournament is not up on titledisc and we arent set up to accept credit cards or paypal.
The last few years, it has only taken 7-10 days for the tournament to fill up, so dont delay! If you are not sure if you can play, the best thing to do is sign up anyway. If you have to cancel before the tournament gets here, youll get your money back except for the part that goes towards the fundraising ($4 for regular players; $29 - $64 for McC-Noters - it varies for McC-Noters depending on your division), and the money still goes toward the fundraising. Plus, if you do have to cancel, you will make someone on the waitlist very happy.
Once the tournament does fill up, it is very easy to get on the waitlist. The best ways are to send me a PM on the PDGA DISCussion Board, send me an email at
[email protected] or call me at home (512) 858-0119 (even in Austin you usually need the area code as I live in Dripping Springs and most phone companies consider that "long distance" sheesh!)
I will just need your name and phone number. It can help to know your division (for when we make up scorecards), but that won't affect whether or not you get in. We don't have set numbers of people in a division, so... for example: it won't help to be willing to play pro when you normally play advanced. If there is a spot for you, we'll get you in regardless of your division.
If you clear the waitlist before the tournament gets here, I'll contact you about it. Otherwise, the only thing you have to do is be there Saturday morning at tourney HQ when check-in closes. If anyone drops out at the last minute or hasn't checked in, we'll drop them and fill their spot with someone from the waitlist.
If you do end up on the waitlist, don't despair. Even if you are far down on the list, there is always hope. At least twice in the last few years, everyone on the list who chose to show up Saturday morning actually made it in.
So, without further delay Waterlooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I am rarely in the big city but was down there yesterday. I stopped by Waterloo Park. On hole 18 near the T they have planted two new trees. Also out about 120' on the right are two new statues. Not really in the way but could be a syk! Hole 15 looks way grown up. The creek is cleaned up to near the basket bridge area but the trees on the T side look like they have grown way tall. Tough to Tougher. It's always something! JP

I saw City workers clearing out the creek on #15 about a week and a half ago. I don't know if they are coming back but, last year they worked all the way up to Friday doubles.

Is the mulligan that popular or can we foresake it so that our round ratings count??
It looks this might fill with McCnote anyway so there will not be much made by the "donation" to the mulligan fund.
I would much rather have my round ratings count
Wha cha think?
harry
Sep 13 2006, 10:45 AM
Mulligans have always been a part of Waterloooooooo and I doubt they will go away this year. Waterlooooooooo is about charity and fun
suemac
Sep 13 2006, 10:55 AM
Michael, relex and have fun at Waterloo. Think about what you said. It's not all about ratings, and if everyone else was using their "fun" mullie, how could you have any scores to compare with for a rated round.
If you are playing for a rating, this isn't the event for you. BTW, are you interested in Teams this year????

seeker
Sep 13 2006, 12:53 PM
I'm already in.
Competitive? I just don't understand the rationale of paying for the PDGA sanction and then throwing away the round ratings which the mulligans effectively do. If everyone has mulligans, relative scores work most likely work out the same anyway.
Either more $$ could go to charity if Waterloo was non-sanctioned or players should get the benefit of sanctioned (rated) rounds.
I understand that mulligans bring in more contributions for those that don't do the McC challenge but it looks like that may not be the case this year since the tourney may fill with all meeting the challenge.
seewhere
Sep 13 2006, 01:17 PM
honestly this tournament should not be sanctioned as it is a fund raiser / benefit tournament and the more $$ for the charity the better and by having it sanctioned what does the player really get? nothing ...
exactly

Y'all ease up on Seeker, he's got a right to ask those questions and he's done it nicely.
Regarding the mulligans: yes, it does make ratings not possible (which wasn't an issue back when we started them - there were no ratings). However, they are part of the fun of the event. We keep it a C-tier on purpose, because it isn't supposed to be a huge competive deal. Heck, I wouldn't even dream of selling mulligans for a B-tier tournament. It is supposed to be a fun, casual, laid back event, but still a tournament; so yes, scores count and are important. They just aren't the only thing that's important.
Sanctioning: it is part of the tradition of Waterloo. It has long, long been a sanctioned pdga tournament. Points can still be earned, just not ratings. And the biggest benefit of being sanctioned? The liability insurance offered by the pdga. Without that insurance, there is no tournament because the city wouldn't allow us to rent the park.
So pdga sanctioning benefits? You betcha: to the players, the club, and the charity. It is a lot more work and expense for the club having it sanctioned, but it is worth it.
As far as mulligans in the future? I'm always open to feedback, especially when it is not screamed at me. More and more I'm hearing that some players would rather not have mulligans and instead have a little more of their entry fee go towards the charity to make up that money.
Others still say they like the fun aspect of the mulligans and/or they don't care about ratings. I think there are a number of people who play Waterloo as their only tournament (or one of the very few) and so they really aren't concerned about them.
If you'd like to express your opinion, talk to me at the tournament (nicely please :D), or send me an PM or email:
[email protected]
Maybe it is a change we will make for next year, but we will definitely be having them this year.
Thanks for listening :D

Hello Wonderful Women Disc Golfers on the DISCussion Board!
The 29th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic is coming up Oct 21-22, 2006. Id love for you all to come play in this years tournament.
However, it is filling up very, very quickly.
If you can play, or even think you might want to play, please fill it out the entry form (a couple of pages back on this thread - or download it from www.austindiscgolf.org (http://www.austindiscgolf.org)) and mail it in with your payment right away. Postmark determines date of entry so please dont delay. Mail it in right away
At Waterloo, well always go that extra distance for our ladies. You will get a larger players package, there will be CTPs for women only, and there will be added payout to all womens divisions. The course is friendly to players of all skill levels, and the tournament is one of the funnest around.
Plus, well even make it easier to register now and cancel later without pain. Send in your entry now, and if you do have to cancel for any reason well waive any cancellation fee and send you a full refund. (plus youll make someone on the waitlist very happy J ). No risk, lots of reward.
We already have 2 pro women (Shannon N & Dee), 2 advanced women (Susan & Laura H). and 1 rec woman (Lynn). I think Jennifers is on the way.
Please encourage any women disc golfers you know to register.
I hope to see you there. If you have any questions at all, feel free to email me or call me at home in the evenings (512) 858-0119.
Thanks!
Gordon

Gordon is right in that Waterloo is a favorite among many golfers with some being a lot of old guys that only play Waterloo or a couple of tournaments a year. I sure hope they move parking over to 4th like they did for ACL fest. If they use the state parking garages by the park it is going to be a nightmare for us.
Maybe everyone should contact the parks dept and capital metro and tell them HOW WONDERFUL IT WORKED FOR ACL using the Republic Square location for pick up and drop off, and HOW CONVENIENT AND FAST IT WAS, and WE HOPE YOU USE THAT AREA AGAIN FOR THE STONES CONCERT. :D

How's Mount Waterloo looking these days? Last time I played was '02 or '03 and the limbs over the teebox were hanging kind of low. Anyone got a favorite hole. Let me think... aw heck, I don't know. They're all sweet. :)
J A B
Sep 26 2006, 08:07 AM
I'll let you know later this morning about Mt Waterloo. I'm off to run thru some Waterloo object golf and park people.
Mt Waterloo is always a fun shot but, my favorite is hole #2: botom of the deck, up the sidewalk, with three pin placements.
The first time I saw this hole I shanked over the sidewalk wall and into some bushes. The player teeing next just balasts his drive stright into the sidewalk, twenty feet off the tee. It just skips, and skips and skips up to the pin. Kind of like bowling, shuffle board, and disc golf all in one. (all sports you can drink while playing, except D.G. tournaments)
harry
Sep 26 2006, 08:49 AM
How can you have a favorite hole @ Waterloo? It's kinda like asking "What year was your favorite Waterloo?" All the holes have their moments and ability to be your favorite or least liked, kinda like the years
WATERLOOOOOOOO000000000000oooooooooooooooooooo
J A B
Sep 26 2006, 12:36 PM
The park looks good, all the holes are very playable with the exception being Mt Waterloo. While it is playable, it was not playable by me, alone with no one to spot. :o
The tee on Mt Waterloo is going to be very tricky, a mesquite tree on the right of the tee area has branched out closing off alot of the opening. Down in the creek, on the left, a willow tree that has snaged many an errant shot has pass on but, the large pecan on the corner is still in fine shape.
There has been alot of trimming of some medium size shrubs, trimmed to the ground, which I guess opens up the trees for people to enjoy the shade, but makes some holes less difficult, (long #1). The hollys behind #4's basket are gone, a hard, skipping upshot will not be stopped. Hole 15 sets up great for the thumber, one shot that I just don't have.
Counting down the days, and yes Harry I should have said "a hole I enjoy throwing" instead of my "favorite hole", at Waterloo they're all good'ens.

Also, last call for sponsors to get on the shirt. We need to have your commitment and name/logo by monday morning in order to have time to get you on the shirt.
After that, we can still put you on a tee sign, on the web site, in the program, etc. So don't be shy, we could still use a lot more sponsorship. :D

Oh, and our full color fundraiser discs for Waterloo are in. They will be for sale at the Zilker mini tomorrow night for $20 and they look great! We will also have them out at Oktoberfest.
A picture is on the club's website, but I'm afraid I don't know how to post it here . Could someone else please do this? Lou? C-Ware? help!

Oh... this is not the actual disc, but it is the color stamp that is on the discs. They are Elite Z Supercolor Buzzes.

Years back Father Dave, SteveO, and others had a beaded necklace with a lobster on it. Within the card whoever got a birdie had to wear the lobster. The lobster has since been lost so I am bringing some "Birdie Beads". Harry you ready to wear them! I plan to have them on a lot! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
