2006 Budweiser Select Corpus Christi Open

http://www.downunderdiscgolf.com/Images/budselectmedium.jpg

Corpus Christi is located just 110 miles south of San Antonio on the beautiful Texas Coast. White sand beaches, palm trees and a great Disc Golf course awaits everyone.

This event is a PDGA B-tier and will follow all PDGA rules and regulations. A minimum of $250 will be added to the Pro purse (more dollars as more sponsors come on board). Amateurs will receive a players package of which the value will not be removed from the payout (added value).

Chilis will be promoting the event with in-store banners, table tents and gallery giveaways. Special Budweiser, Innova and Chili's items will be given away in-store at the Saturday Night Players Party. Dont miss this one.

On Sunday the Budweiser Girls will serve the beer and caddy for the Final 9.

Check out all the details including the schedule, hotel, and directions at the new Down Under Disc Golf website www.downunderdiscgolf.com (http://www.downunderdiscgolf.com) Click on International Events then follow the Bud Select logo.

The West Guth Park Course has undergone a major renovation and now has all brand new Chainstar Baskets. The course we will play will be the original 18 plus an added 3 holes.

Come to the coast and enjoy a weekend away at this great event. Aquarium excursions, fishing trips and other family activities can be arranged if you would like.

See you on the beach.

Yours in Flight,
Chris Himing

Come play and you will find out. :p

Basically I talked about it with the Bud guy and he agreed it was better using the Open wording as it will be advertised in a few liquor stores, and Chili's leading up to the event. This will allow people that know golf to associate with it a little more.

Next year when the club does the event they can call it whatever they want, but keeping sponsors happy is always a good thing.

I am looking forward to this event and seeing how much fun I can have. As always I have a few surprises in store.

Titledisc should be online later tomorrow and I am close to a hotel deal. We have averaged around 80 players for this event in years past and this year expect a few more. The field will be cut at around 90 - 100 players as we only have 21 holes to play with.

More later,
Chris

Ben told me last night it would be done by Thursday night Jerry. I have had good feedback from people for this so it will definately be a good one.

This is a good opportunity for us to make a good impression again with the Bud people. It will make things a little easier for me to go to them again for the TX10 Final. Also making sure the Third Coast Club is setup well for next years event when I am gone.

Please remember once I get a hotel deal advertised jump on it. It will not be easy to get a good cheap hotel that time of year if you wait.

More later,

The hotel deal is done. I will be putting the details together and the info on the website this afternoon.

We got extremely lucky and got a hotel on Water Street (2 back from the beach) with cooked breakfast, cafe and pool. Do not wait to book your rooms once I tell you where. All other hotels in Corpus, Portland etc all quoted over $80 and that was for a bulk rate. Summer holidays and the price goes up. Even the Crack 6 was $79!

Back later with the details.

3 rounds of 21 in the heat sounds good to most people. If you want to play more play Open.

This also allows traveling (and locals) to enjoy the Sunday afternoon a little, go to the beach or hit the road home. Not to mention the sponsors like to see a gallery of people watching the final. Things like galleries are the future of sponsorship for the sport.

I tell you what Lance...if anyone can gaurantee me and the sponsors 100 people to spectate the 4th round Sunday afternoon I will make the change. :D

aaahhhhhhhh!!! no kidding!! I totally missed that!!! good question!!! its probably a sponsor thing just like the name change!! With only the pros playing a final nine it makes for a huge gallery which looks better from a sponsors point of view!! Especially with the Bud girls caddying for the showcase ,pro only, final!!On the bright side look what time you can leave if your ready to go and not watching the final!! That is pretty sweet if your traveling out of town to play in this tourney!! :D:D:D

Beat you to it EZ :D

I could have got much more cash from Budweiser if I could have gauranteed more spectators. It is as simple as that. If we do good this year it will always help the future.

ozdisc
Jun 01 2006, 04:06 PM
Blame Billy for the odd final 9 layout last year. :D I do not believe in "extended" final holes or safari golf.

I want the people watching to be able to know the hole and compare how the pro's are playing it to the way they played it earlier in the day. The only fun change will be the last hole around or over the lake. Otherwise expect 8 regular holes in the final. Nothing worse than hearing in the gallery, "where are they throwing to?".

Already had a couple of people book the hotel...don't wait. Plenty of camping all around as well. I read you can even get permits to camp on the beach!

We already had permission to use the art for bowling green event.

I will have a Innova basket and a Innova mini basket in the raffle plus other goodies. If anyone would like to donate to the raffle I would appreciate it. The proceeds go into paying for tournament expenses like insurance (we have beer) and Am player packs, etc etc.

Vinnie this is not a charity event. However the raffle that I am doing will benefit the event. A lot of extra effort and money is going into making sure Budweiser and Chili's are happy so future years will be good for everyone.

The local club was given some Innova baskets and they are going to donate them to some local schools that Jay and Des have already visited. If anyone has any used discs that they can also donate to the schools that would be appreciated.

As for the payout...

The Pro payout will be approx 35-40% of the field as all of my events. We are adding at least $250 to Open Pro.

The Am payout will be the same as my Texas 10's (without the charity and bonuses removed). Definatley not like some very flat recent events. The Am players pack WILL NOT be taken out of the players payout.

Nothing hidden or an issue here. It will be a fun event with good player perks.

See you all soon,
Chris

The guys involved (Erron, Mike, Billy and Ryan) have been emailed with the details and I am waiting to hear back from them.

Efrain not everything is about financial gain. The club is owed a decent sized sponsorship (their money, not mine), plus a cut on the raffle.

As for non-financial gain I help bring exposure and a good size event to their town without too much hard work. Now before you jump on me for that...the guys there have done a great job getting all new baskets in the ground and in a short time hopefully cement boxes and tee signs.

The logistics are up to me to pull together. The club does not have to worry about anything other than having the course look nice. That is a big job in itself I know.

Mike has been helping me try to get some more local sponsors and as we all know that is the key to being profitable and having a little extra special deal at the event.

To anyone that has ever run a large event knows there is a lot of costs. There are also profits to be made if done right.

I could have always not spent hours and hours getting Budweiser on board with cash and product support, not bothered about getting Chili's to do lunch both days, not paid the insurance costs because of having beer, not had free value added player packs, not had a shuttle between holes with free drinks, spent hours calling every hotel in the area begging to get a good rate, had free water everywhere etc etc. I TRY to do all these little extra things to make the event that little bit more special so people will enjoy themselves.

As for the millions of dollars I make doing all this....I am off to the mall to spend some of it now :D

I really hope the local guys want to watch and learn what is involved at this event. I am hoping that with the job we expect to do to please the new corporate sponsors then next year the ground work is done for the club to take over and make it thier own and make even more money. The proposal I did for both Budweiser and Chili's is not just a one year deal, it involves lots more. Sometimes things take time and setup costs but the rewards do come. Next year and beyond the club will get that. There are other events I will not name that did not take advantage of certain things and may very likely pay the price for it all next year. The 3rd Coast Club is getting back on track and I fully expect them to host a great event next year.

Have to run out for a while I have some of my millions to spend.

If I haven't said it enough already...great job on the course guys. Hope to see you soon.

Thanks
Chris

People only get defensive when they have something to hide. As you can see from my answer (now and always) that is not a problem. I prefer to give detailed answers to questions so more people know where I am coming from regardless of what is asked. Or would you prefer yes or no responses?

As for Payout I answered before to Vinnie and you I believe...

Pro's...a minimum of $250 added to Open Pro
Am's...about the same percentage and deepness as all my other events.
Am Player Packs...not taken out of payout (added value)

As I discussed with the guys in Corpus we are doing what we can to help the club make some money. A few ideas are floating around.

So it looks like at least 12 pros, probably more like 15!!!

I still dont know if I am playing advanced or master. It would be nice to play up but I want to give Ryan some competition in advanced. I would hate to pay pro entry fee and then not accept cash, doesnt make a lot of sense............

I am going to worlds and cash is an issue. My last am worlds though, so I will be going master sometime in the next six months to a year, I have always said when my rating hit 950 I would move up, but I am close enough................

Spoke with the city and they are mowing the week of the tourney and spraying for mosquitoes the day after, YEAH!!!

There are about five tee boxes that could use rakes during the rounds. Just to keep them from getting rutted. I have three.

Here is a sort of current paid players list. There is about 15 people to add from memory. Not that many spots left.

Nice added cash going to the MPM at this moment. Steve Hemmeline is going to cash well in MPO as Erron and Trey are both going to Am Worlds. Maybe I should play and make some money. If no more Open Pro's sign up then the MPM's will get the Final 9 if they want it.

http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6094#Open

I will say it many times before the week is out but a huge thanks to all the CC guys that have been working on making the course look good for this weekend. I will make sure everyone there has a good time.

I have lots to do this week before I make the trip but am really looking forward to a nice weekend on the coast.

We are working on a players party just a short walk from the tournament hotel. More details later.

Back later.

Thanks
Chris

Thanks for the entry Vinnie.

As I said before the added money will be split pro-rata bewteen all Pro divisions. The more in a division the more added money, that is only fair. I will show you the list on Friday afternoon if you need to switch. You may not be the only one either.

I am sure the final 9 will be open pros but just wanted people to know up front in case.

Regardless of who is what division it will be fun
