Chuck, are players subject to play in their respective divisions the following weekend after a ratings update? In other words is their a grace period after ratings updates?
ck34
Apr 06 2006, 08:32 PM
No grace period. That's why we update between Sunday-Tuesday. The TD gets an email from the PDGA with current members and their ratings on Thursday right before the event so they have the latest info.
When did that change?
and How can a tourney with assigned pools that are filling abide by a players new rating that comes out 4 days before the event?
ck34
Apr 06 2006, 09:38 PM
It's been that way for at least five years now. And you wonder why we don't update ratings more often. This is a primary reason.
ck34
Apr 06 2006, 09:46 PM
Correction. Apparently they added a grace period of two weeks for players who are preregistered for an event. It's on page 7 of the 2006 Tour Standards. So, as long as you are preregistered, you lock in your division for the two weekends following the update which would be April 22nd and April 29th regardless of the ratings update posted by the 18th.
Five years? You mean like ever since the ratings were put fully into place?
I don't buy that I am making this up out of thin air, sorry, i am young and keep my braincells in tact. If i could find the posts where you yourself have talked about the grace period I would but I am not going to search through every post you have made for years to find it.
Added in 06...lol It may have been added to the official doc. in 06 but that has been the case since as long as i can remember and I base this mostly on what YOU have said.
You okay Chuck?? /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Apr 06 2006, 09:53 PM
If there were a grace period for all that time, there wouldn't be a strong reason for us to bust it and only post ratings updates between Sunday-Tuesday, and yet we do. If anything, the grace period at least helps TDs get preregistrations so that's fine.

Does this work for AMs $$ too?
Scenario:
I play Pro in an event on, say, the first weekend of May. I take cash but have already preregistered in the AM division for a tournament two weeks later. Am I still allowed to play AM in the next event, or do I have to play Pro?
ck34
Apr 07 2006, 11:55 AM
The grace period is for ratings changes not anything else. Of course, if your rating is 957 when you play pro and cash and then your rating drops to 954, you could play Am after the ratings update. Likewise, let's say you were 953 when you played Pro and cashed and then your rating jumped to 958. If you were preregistered in Am for an event within two weeks of the ratings update, you could still play Am under the grace period rule.

Well, I never intend to blow up.
I tried a hacks version of figuring my rating based on the unofficial results of the 3 tourneys this year that are going into the ratings.
With no bump factor what so ever, I will likely drop this turn around, depending on my proper understanding of the double weighting rule. I calculated 931-934.

My question with Bowling Green is if they will be able to get the pools right. What a huge daunting task.
If they do not get the pools right you can basically throw away all the round ratings.
CHUCK, How is the same scores from last and this year at BG (188 before finals be 30 points different this year
1st Barry Schultz 2006 Bowling Green total before finals 188 = 1055 golf
1st Justin Bunnell 2005 Bowling Green total before finals 183 = 1037
2nd Puli Mon 2005 Bowling Green total before finals 188 = 1025 golf
05' Bunnell 183 = 1037
06' Barry 188 = 1055
05' Puli Mon 188 = 1025
06' Phil Arthur 197 =1022
The ratings are ridiculously hig this year. 9 strokes worse in score is the same ratings from last year.
WOW! That next ratings report I should expect to see Barry around 1070?????....

I don't have access to change the online unofficial calcs. I've mentioned before that it needs to be fixed. Official ratings will be lower than what you see. Wasn't the weather better at BG this year than last for the Pros also?

Apr 12 2006, 06:26 PM
If it was better then it should go DOWN even more because that would mean JB beat them last year in BAD weather.
I wasn't there this year, it was just amazing that Barry and myself both finished 188 before finals and his rating was 30 points higher....I guess i don't understand the official/non-official ratings thing.
JB's 183 last years should have been >1050 golf

Yeah because soon 1017 will barely put you above the 1015 Intermediate cutoff line. At least you will be able to play ADV again Kevin. :D
Chuck keep the current rating system for the MA1 and bring back the 2005 rating system for the PROS...maybe we can trick a few of those MA1's :D

Brian Skinner threw an unbelievable round of 41 at the Virginia Open the end of last May that was rated 1101. Unfortunately, it wasn't calculated correctly because the Ams played a different course than the pros. Roger is in the process of correcting that rating while doing this April update. Skinner's rating went up. Everyone who can guess the new record round rating for Skinner will get the early scoop on their new April rating. One guess per person.

ck34
Apr 14 2006, 08:23 PM
Rounds only get dropped if you have newer rated rounds more than 12 months after the ones you want dropped. They don't drop just because the clock moves, only if you "move."
scottfaison
Apr 14 2006, 08:31 PM
OK..so my last rated rounds before this last update were in 2004. I have played 8 rated rounds in 2006. So the old should pass away and my new rating will be based on the last 8 rounds with the last 2 (25%) will be double wighted?
I am new to this whole rating discussion but have been working with numbers all week so why not try to decipher one more Rosetta Stone... :)
ck34
Apr 14 2006, 08:42 PM
Correct. Since you didn't play in 2005 and you now have at least 8 rounds in the most recent 12 months, only your new 8 will be involved in your new rating with the most recent 2 rounds double weighted.

Chuck... out of curiosity... when a tournament is officially entered into the system and the "Unofficial Ratings" become "Official" do they tend to rise or fall?
Just curious because I've been calculating mine out all year so far (prognosticating a nine point jump if they all stay the same, lol) and I'm wondering which direction I'll be off in.

Once the online formula gets corrected (downward) they will be close but will always potentially be unreliable based on several TDs either not understanding how to set course layouts for each division or not taking the time to do it for the unofficial online calculations. At this point, if all of your online ratings were done properly and your calculations are correct, you are still probably 5-6 points too high due to the 2005 factor boost still being in there.

It is baffling why anyone cares about ratings. The ratings system is has a different formula every update (boosts, corections, etc...) and there are most likely a lot of scoring problems such as the Skinner round. I also believe there isn't nearly enough data (rounds) for PDGA players to handicap their play. Ratings are a cool novelty, but they are about as accurate as the old Player Degree Rating. I don't care what Skinner's rating is going to be, I don't care what my rating is going to be, I don't care what MTL's rating is going to be. Maybe it's just me. Let's go play some golf.

I will have no ratings under 900, not because of Standard Deviation, but because I haven't shot an 800 round in a year. I predict I am going up at least 4 points, possibly 6.
And I predict I'm gonna STILL be ahead of MTL.
I have a sub-900 round of 842 that is staying I beleive :( Badly wrapped 4 week old broken ankle that round(i should get simpathy points on that round :) ) i could barely walk after about 7 holes....shot 90 points better the second round with no wrap at all....helps to play with circulation and not being nearly in tears after each throw, or step for that matter...lol. Still my rating should go up more then 20 points, I am thinking to about 935. Am I close Chuck? + or - ?? :D

I am statistics obsessive. If there is a way to get a statistic I want to calculate it out, figure out its meaning, and examine it inside and out. That's what I do. Thats why I love baseball and basketball so much. I wish there were more statistics I could muck around with in Disc Golf.

Everyone's personal 12 months counts back from the date of their most recent round. If your most recent round was the Memorial, that's what counts, not March 30th. Count back 365 days before the actual dates of the Memorial and you'll see why mid-March 2005 events are still in there.

With three rounds at one event, the best round gets double weighted. Double weighting starts at three rounds. Then, one more round gets double weighted at 7, 11, 15, etc.

The number on the card does not dictate how I am playing. My blow up rounds were terrible enough to off set the good rounds I have been having. Take away the rounds were I felt were completely off base, and I would have increased to 945. But since we cannot do that, oh well.
All that matters is the order of finish in the tournament at hand. I have stopped worrying about what my rating means a couple of months ago. Now I just focus on what lies ahead of me.

Got my rating up two more points to 996, just 4 to go. Unfortunately, I up and moved to Boulder colorado, the land where it's **** near impossible to get 1000+ rated tournament rounds because of the severe lack of propagators. I guess I'll never hit that elusive 1000 mark.

Apr 19 2006, 05:01 PM
Pretend I'm 3 years old...what's a propagator?
bruce_brakel
Apr 19 2006, 05:27 PM
A propagator is a PDGA member rated over 800 with enough recent rounds that they can be used to generate ratings for other players. Chuck could tell you how many rounds they have to have and how many propagators you have to have.
A shortage of propagators would have no bearing on the difficulty of getting a 1000 rated round any more than it would on the difficulty of getting ratings generally. Either you have enough gators and every member gets a rating or you don't and no one gets a rating. Either way you have to shoot a 1000 rated round relative to the average score and average rating of the propagaors.
ck34
Apr 19 2006, 05:51 PM
A propagator is a current PDGA member who has a rating over 799 based on at least 8 rounds. At least 5 must play a round in order for everyone to get a rating that round. That's why it's important for TDs to take this into consideration when they have lower divisions play different layouts if they want to make sure these players will get ratings.

Yes, I think it's true . . . you MUST be the worst 963 rated golfer in the world! :p

Everything processed and passed to Roger EXCEPT the monster BG Am event. We have to wait for Dave to get back from Japan to do all of the virtual pools required to get that in the mix. Still on track for June 27.

My rating will only go from a 908 to about a 913. It really sucks that my 1st ever sanctioned tourney last year bombed my rating. I have only 2 rounds below my rating in the last 8 months. My round rating average over the last 6 months has been about a 935.
I'm not complaining about the system, I just think I am a much better player than my rating. I have improved exponentially this year.
