Last year we got a deal through Orbitz where two of us paid $600 each for airfare, rental car & hotel for 8 days & 7 nights. I think I probably spent about a grand on the whole trip, but we were there all week. We stayed pretty far away from the course (20 min.) because of the deal we got. As I remeber, the host hotel is pretty expensive. Fountain Hills is a haul from Shelly Sharpe too, so staying at he host hotel doesn't really mean you don't need a rental. It was like 13 degrees when we left Cincinnati. It was sunny & 75 when we got into AZ. There's nothing like pulling the rental over to change into warm weather gear!

the old host hotel (right across the street) has been sold as closed down now...no word on if it will be open before the event as it has been closed with nothing going on for about 6 months now...still plenty of options all aroundphoenix/scottsdale for hotels...but book now/early as it is also during spring training and room rates go up and disappear pretty quick as it gets closer..
fountain course looks nothing like it was when last played 3 :( years ago...it has alot of other things on the grounds but dan should have enough space to make a course on..
3 day vegas and memorial tournaments in 8 days....
i may just have to unretire for those! :D

Yea, but we were there for 8 days. We went to the Grand Canyon, Red Rocks, played the courses in Flagstaff & played many more around Phoenix. You should be able to make it much cheaper for 4 days.

This event is a MUST PLAY for anyone looking for a great party and great competition!!! I have played the last 2 years and will do everything in my power to play this tournament every year for the rest of my disc golf career!!!
I cant wait to play the Fountain Hills course in a tournament. Played a doubles round there last year with Climo and Hammock the Monday after the tournament was over and it was a pretty sweet course. Cant wait to see what it looks like this year!!!
Looking forward to playing my last year of AM at the Memorial :D

The Fountain course has changed considerably and you may not be in the water as much. However the layout will be lengthened for the tournament and Im sure the water will come into play but perhaps not as bad as years past. If you can throw accurately then you will not have to worry about the water holes anyway. A rumor going around is that dano is going to incorporate hay bales to limit the use of rollers on some holes at vista.

What? Why? Is he going to institute height-restricting mandys to limit thumbers also?
The extra OB does a pretty decent job of putting more risk into the roller already.

I will be going to the Stars game and maybe the PINKwings game. As for my predictions, Stars of course in the first game, and Coyotes in the second game for sure! :D:D:D
Who wants to go to the Stars game? Let me know.
I've heard from Danny that he has about 50 entries or more already. My recommendation, since this usually entails airline reservations and hotels is to register as soon as you can. Danny has turned people away from this tournament every year recently.
Anyone heard about the new possible format for Vista. He may be changing it to 18 holes in the same land. MONSTER COURSE! I think he wants to hold a monthly there to check flow so if he does you can bet I'll be there to check it out!

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE NEW 3 PALMS FORMALLY INN SUITES :(
Don't stay there. They require visitors to pay for the first night in advance BEFORE seeing the room.
I checked IN and OUT of the hotel within 10 MINUTES because the room was in serious disrepair. They refused to give me a receipt or refund. Pieces of the wall and furniture were missing, holes in the carpet, the bathroom was beyond disgusting with cracks, etc. I filed a complaint July 8, 2005 with the Better Business Bureau, Arizona

>just makes more opportunitys to go OB on a sidewalk or something.... <
or something.....like yellow ROPE!!!
Yes Scottsdale will be a 18 hole par 64 or 65. Some of the hole changes will be...hole A(17) to hole C(18) (par 5) with yellow rope to the left, narrowing the first 450' up to the bottle neck. Hole 2 to hole 3 with rope to the left, mando still on the right. Hole 6 to 8, (instead of 7 to 8), same OB, omit hole 10, 12 to long 13, 14 to long 15, hole 17 to short hole 2 with rope ob to the left. Played this layout with Dano and it worked well. There may be some other changes, but Dan seemed to like it.
The Fountain does play in reverse, but with some tweaking it really is turning out to be as fun if not more so than the original course. Also the Fountain gave the final ok for t-boxes and the word I have is that they should be in by the Memorial.
Hope to see everyone. The '06 Memorial is shaping up to be one of the best with the return of the Fountain, and in my opinion, the hardest courses yet!!

How early will this puppy fill up?
Deano...
We urge everyone to have their entries in by the end of January. We hold 24 tour spots for up to 14 days before the event, but that can fill up by the 1st week of feb.. Last year the tour spots that we had to hold were gone by 21 days before the event. This year it will be a little better with the Fountain course being used. We should be able to take on another 100 players or so than last year. We still will have to cut off registration within 2 weeks of the event so that we can organize tee times and have the answer to the most asked question by the last week before the event, "when are tee times going to be posted?". We already have around 90 people signed up, with about 8 being Tour Players.
Russel
just wanted to see whos in so far, as i know from the past Dano will probably tweak the format two or three times.I can only hope that the one thing that won't change, is that the ams will get to play the fountain twice.Couldn't make it last year due to getting married so close to the tournament, as you can guess all are resources were going to pay for the wedding. This year i'll be bringing my wife with me and she is really looking forward to going as well as i'am,see you there.

Jan 04 2006, 06:45 PM
Sorry to hear about the wedding.....just kidding...congrats. Dan will not be changing the schedule at this point. The Fountain is secure, so that problem will not be there this year to force any changes. The only thing that we will tweak now will be some holes and tees and that's it. We are really prepared this year compared to most, and I think we will take it up another level once again.

Try 400 total players. That's the number Dan is thinking. I can't imagine 200 total pros, but it could exceed that. Last year the Masters had about 35 players. I wouldn't be surprised to see a masters field around 50-60 players this year. Maybe around 20 grands. Open around 120-130.

I end up missing late awards every year. The only reasonable flight from Phoenix to Portland leaves at 8:30, unless I want to waste another half day (at least) or work on Monday. I usually have to leave at 7PM, just as they're about to start.

Flyin,
Comment wasn't directed towards you, just givin Rhett some s**t. Anyways , last year we only had 1 course, so we did have people teeing late. This year, if we stick to 200 people per field, then we should be able to finish no later than 2pm. Of course the ams will have a 20 min drive back to Dukes from the Fountain. If we run 200 people at 7min. intervals, starting at 7:30, we can get done in about 5 to 5 1/2 hours. So that's around 1pm, give or take 15 min. No final 9, so I think this year we should be finished with the ceremony earlier than last year. Official tee times won't probably be posted until we close registration 1 to 2 weeks before the event.
rshelt
Jan 12 2006, 09:14 PM
Flyin,
I sat down and figured 200 people @ 7 minute intervals, starting at 7:30. The last group would be teeing off at 1:12. It will take about 2 hours to play the fountain. It will take the pros about 4 hours to play a rd. @ Vista. If there are 200 pros, Dano will start the ams (at the fountain on sunday) at 8am, because the pros(at Vista) will not be finished until after 5pm. Dan says not to expect the awards to start before 7:30-8pm. It really does depend on how many are playing. Like I said before, I can easily imagine 200 ams. 200 pros, that waits to be seen. 30 less pros, and the awards can start up to an hour earlier.

Is there a format for Ams, as far as the order of divisions teeing off, Adv 1st, then Int, or do the old guys get to get up earliest, or is that yet to be determined? I'd like to check out some of the top pros before or after my round also. I'll be playing Am Adv Mstr and Murphey's Law states that I'll be playing at the same time as the top Open cards that I want to see. Any chance of knowing that ahead of time?

In the past they have rotated the divisions start times so no one ends up having to start early EVERY day..ie Friday, Open Men then Masters then Grands then Women..

On Saturday we played a monthly-like, tourney on the new 18 hole layout at Vista. Perfect conditions, 70 and very light wind all day. We played 1 round of singles, and 1 of doubles. Par is definately going to be 66. There was one 64 and scores as high as 123 for some AMs. Worst in open was around 79. I think we'll see some rounds in the upper 50s, if there is no wind. I struggled to a 70, and really thought a low 60s round was there for my level. This course is by far the best the Scottsdale course has ever been. No complaints, even from the am women, who played from most of the pro tees. I love the Fountain, but this course is better. Better playing, but not better looking. The Fountain will always be a "prettier" course.

Russell,
Any idea of the divisional order of tee-offs for each day? Especially Sunday.
Are you guys alternating who goes first or sticking with the same thing?
You know I'm going to give you my opinion......:)
While alternating the tee-times per division between morning and afternoon sounds good and seems fair on the surface, I think keeping the same order is better. What happens is that some people end up with a late tee-time and a round that goes really late and then end up with a really early tee-time the next day. I personally much prefer the same general time each day, even if it's early, versus getting a really late finish, a later dinner, and a sunrise start the next day.
So do you know the divisional order for each day? :) TIA.

I think switching it up is nice. I mean how late can a round really go. You play will 5 then have a 7 am tee time. Whats wrong with that. Dinner takes a could hours then a couple hours to chill then 8 hours up sleep and up at 7 am ready to go again. Plus it gives the ams a chance to watch the pros when the am play in the early AM because there is no way I would wake up early just to go watch the pros play before my tee time.
Speaking of Tee Times. Rhett are you even bringing the family out to The Memorial this year??? I heard you were staying home this year.

What about Blue level players like Women and GM Pros? I think the hole balance looks like it could be a little better in terms of having maybe two more twoable holes for everyone in the mix let alone Blue level players. Regular 18 is one of the outstanding par 3 holes on the regular course. And regular 1 is fine too.
If the usual 18 pin is being used for the 1 to 18 hole, the water is too close for fairness when throwing at that pin from the opposite direction. If the pin is moving to a different spot with water at least 25 feet behind it, that would be much better.
cbdiscpimp
Jan 24 2006, 06:42 PM
I agree with chuck. Leave original 1 and original 18 alone. They are great risk reward 2s and I think 2 of the best holes on the original layout.
Just my opinion. See you guys in a month and 4 days :D:D:D

If you did regular 18 and regular 1, you would end up with an extra hole. However, instead of the new holes 16 thru 18 shown on the map, you could play regular 14, then hole 15 tee to the 17 pin which transitions easily to regular 18 for the finish. That 15 to 17 par 5 hole would be pretty cool and prevent losing hardly any length. The pin could even be set longer than regular 17 if desired. There would be better scoring spread and balance with regular 1 and 18. I think the transitions would even be somewhat better.

All Am divisions will play the same course at the Fountain as the pros. At Vista, there will be a short tee on hole 6(dam hole). Other changes are, instead of hole 11 being reg. hole 6 to hole 8, they will play from hole 6 to hole 7, then they will play from regular hole 9s tee for hole 12. I tried to talk Dan into letting all ams play the same courses, but he brought up a good point. Not all ams can thrown over the water on those holes, and on 6 to 7, he doesn't want to create any backups at the narrow end. We know that we will hear some whinning, but if he doesn't hear it one way, he'll hear it another. The rest of the course is still pretty tuff, and all ams are playing all of the OBs.

Chuck, First off, we're done with the course design. This is how it will be for the tourney. 2nd, hole 1 to 18 is not to the short 18 position. It's to long 18 by the tree near the water, but to the side, not behind the basket. It's like old hole 1, but about 75' longer, easy for an arm like the Pimp, but more risk cause you have to throw harder, bringing water more into play if you take the outside hyzer route.
Hole 17 to 2, is really not to hole 2. There will be a temp basket closer to the volleyball court near the cabana. Ending there means you just walk about 75' and your off the course. 16 to 17 still would mean that you have to walk through 2-3s fairway to get to 18, like we have done for years, only this time 3s basket also will be a temp that pushes hole 3 about 50' further north. Hole 17 to 2s temp basket is a great hole, and we agreed that it will be better than hole 18 was. Remember that there will be an OB line between 2-3(hole9) and 17-2(18) fairways, which makes 2 great USDGC type holes. Play for good position and risk OB. Play down the center and mess with the trees that have never come into play until this course.

The course is still unbalanced without enough great par 3 holes and two excellent ones were removed for what appear to be more long open par 4 or 5 holes that are similar all over the course. The relative sameness of the terrain demands design creativity and 1 and 18 worked. The fact that several holes have USDGC OB doesn't necessarily make them cooler, just more punitive. Holes 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 18 are relatively the same. Holes 13 and 17 are just plain old par 3s.

Does everything have to be 2able? Why not be happy with a 3 as a birdie? There are 8 par 4s that are 3able by blue level players. There are also 4 par 3s under 400', with 2 being under 360'. (4 par 3s around 425') The par 5s are tough and probably will average over 5 even with the pros. Remember we are trying to make a "championship" course, not one that caters to lower levels. I think that most of the "Blue Level" players respect that thought also. Top open players will always refer to the par 54, but blue level players should look at actual par, which this year will be on the score cards. I'd be shocked, but not surprised, if anyone shoots 54 or better.

Did I say everything should be twoable? I said the balance was off and suggested two more in the mix would be better. Not just for Blue but for everybody. We've had quite a spirited discussion on long course hole balance on the Course Eval topic area and in the Course Designers group.
I'm also not suggesting that the Gold holes be dumbed down to suit the Blue players. Place some alternate tees where appropriate so that some of the par 4 holes don't become unlikely birdie 3s and routine 4s. But place at lengths where a 3 can be gotten with two good throws and a putt, not two Gold level drives.
Some Blue level players can hang out there if they can throw rollers on a competition courses suited for that. But with USDGC markings, I suspect that option may be too risky to potentially reach those full length Gold 4s without airshots. It's not just the Pro Women and GMs but the bulk of the Ams who are Blue level.

Because now it's almost a full circle! They built a little picknic area and play area in the southwest corner of the park. If you walk to old hole 15s basket there is now a war memorial (and no #15 :() If you walk to the bailout tree for weenie arms on old 15 you will find 1s tee box going to old 14. Hole 2 is one of the best holes I've ever played. You walk about 75' from 1s basket and tee off from 75'in front of the 2 trees in the middle of old 14, all the way(about750') to old 13, on the edge of the hill near the one lone palm. It is definately one of the top 2 holes of the tourney, with 6 to 8 @ Vista being really close. You continue the rest of the way around, same direction as the regular course, except you don't double back to play old 9-15. Make sense? It will, and you will like IF they fix the tee boxes.

Chuck, All 8 4s are not Gold level, in fact they are all 3able by blue level, that's why I stated that. they are all around 650-750'. Danny and I even argued that 1 or 2 of the par 4s should be 3s. Two good 325' drives(something that even you can do) should get most near the baskets. I'll agree that hole 18 was a better 3 than 13 or 17, but it didn't work with hole 17 to 2, which is worth losing hole 18 for. Hole 1 (if you would read) is the same, just longer. Blue level had trouble 2ing Hole1 before, and now it's more a risk for the gold level. You want to change some because you thnk it looks boring, or as you say, too many holes that are the same, but when you actully look at it, it is about as diversified as it could be, and still be a tough course for top players. Think about it, 8 par 4s ranging from 650-750, With at least 5 being blue level, 4 blue level 3s , 2 being a little basic, but relieving to those needing an easy 2, 4 gold level 3s, and 2 gold 5s. If you read earlier I posted that we played a monthly and the ams played and everyone loved it, and usually there are all kinds of complaints.

I don't think Dan is starting anyone before 8am, on any course. The women who played this weekend, (6 of them, only 1 being pro) started at 10am and finished 1:30pm. Start 200 people at 8am, with 7 min. intervals, that starts them around 2ish(maybe a little earlier). It won't be dark until around 6:30ish. Remember we're only running 200 max per course. Last 2 years we had 260+ for 1 course. You do the math, and stop worrying so much... :D

Jan 24 2006, 09:58 PM
From a course design standpoint, max length for a Blue par 4 in the open is 600 feet. Optimum design range is 525-575 for best scoring spread. It's not whether a three is possible but whether 2-4 out of 10 players consistently three the hole on average to get a good scoring spread. However, if there's trouble, then the scoring can be spread by OB penalties, but that's harder to do fairly and the length range shouldn't necessarily be any longer.
Open holes in the 600-700 range is the design zone for Gold par 4s with a good scoring spread. Over 700 and you're again in a range that just favors long arms with not enough 3s to go around.

Some courses have to be blue, and some gold, this one we would like to be more gold. In a blue design, par 4s are no longer than 600'. In a gold design they are 850'. My idea of Gold design is the USDGC, on this type of wide open course. Blue design, is last years Memorial for the AMs, and you saw how much they liked that. In my opinion, championship courses should not be made with the blue level in mind, that works best for a recreational course. For most players that come here, they want a gold course. I would hate to change a course for the few, and hurt the majority.
Adding old hole 18, or 1 to 2 easier birdies sure wouldn't suddenly change this course into a better course, and that's what we were initially talking about. Also I'm guessing at the distances. 1 to 3 of the par 4s could be 600' or less.

Dual tees are easy to do where needed. Beat the Gold players to a pulp. Certain shorter tees will be just as brutal for Blue but with the same "fun factor" as Gold.

So are the Ams going to play this layout as well? (on Saturday) Or do we have to play some shortened Amateurized version of the course again?
I hope we get to play this layout as well. I dont see why hey would set it up with rope and the like and then not have us play it. I also know that I cant wait to play Fountain Hills this year :D:D:D
Usually the Ams play the same course WITHOUT all the added OBs....... I guess they have NO SKILLS /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Id guess that is done so there are NOT any 120's and MAJOR DELAYS for the "Pimples" group :D

how long is the biggest pump over the water that would be a consideration. 350'? 400'?
Vista: Hole 5 375' short 430' in the long
Fountain: 2 holes 100-150, but 1 you have to cross 225' of land, then 100' of water

Let's see.....2:00 PM tee off....wide open course plays in about 3.5 hours (10 to 1:30)....add 1 hour for backups and stuff, because 7 minute intervals is agressive....that make 6:30 PM, or finishing in the dark. :)
Anything else I can help you with? :D
There will be no 1 hour backups for a couple of reasons. 1; we will have shorter tees on some of the longer holes(like every year) for am2 men & women, adv. women, master&GM women. Advanced men will play the course the same as pros, except for holes 4(6 to 8), 5 (old 9), and 17(dam hole), like I said yesterday. All AM div. will play all OB. Also we will have spotters waving on the groups on the par 4s and 5s. We will make it clear to the players about not waiting until groups have holed out on 600' holes. You know you can contact Dan directly with your concerns, but of course he'll tell you if you don't like it, don't come, which I thought that's what you said earlier in the thread :D.
Now you're thinking yesterday Russel said that 6 to 7 was hole 11, well Dano told me today that we will be starting like every year on regular hole one and ending on the long 7 holes to the south.

I'm just remembering a couple of years ago when there was that hobo-camp sized backup on the ultra-cool combo-hole with the mandy. Where that little girl got whammed in the head by an OB drive into the schoolyard.
I was never so glad to have a zero-dark-thirty tee time as I was that round. We were able to blow through that hole in nothing flat.

well if i remember right(and you know i do)we started the last year across the road for the pros as everyone played one course....
this year with both courses it doesn't really matter either way...
when you get a chance could you please answer the fountain question i asked earlier....thanks, keith

That was in the group ahead of me.. Wierd stuff, moving the hole in the middle of the round. And making everyone who had already played it...REPLAY IT...... :p
I had a guy in my group turn a 7 into a 3......
Play PRO, Rhett. Then you wont have those "slow play" back up issues
:D

We did start on the back 7 last year, and it was a huge help when it came to the mando/girl-got-hit-in-the-head hole. I hate starting a round, only to be sitting 3 holes later for what seems like forever. Stretch us out over the first 7, and it won't be an issue.
Can't nobody do it like 311!

I thought we started on both, depending on if you were a late start or early. I could be wrong. All the past Memorials seem to merge into one sometimes. Anyways Dan says this year everybody on hole 1, just like when the last time we had 2 courses. People have to look back to when we had 2 courses to compare, and not assume(Rhett) that we will have the same problems we had the last 2 years with only 1 course. Some would not like starting on that 1st back hole anyways, now that's it's 1017' long, with a narrowed fairway.
Here are the distances for Vista, done by Micheal Gaffney:
hole 1...365' water on rt. sidewalk far left
2...624' mandy on rt.(must go lt. of) ob line to left
3...670' mandy on lt. (must go rt. of) ob far left
4...981' mandy on 1st tree to the lt. ob lt. on 2nd &3rd throws
5...384' almost completely over water. ob sidewalk 30' behind. There will be a long position also at about 425'
6...327' ob sidewalk behind
7...440' sidewalk to lt., water on rt.
8...570' ob line lt. fence ob on rt.
9...693' sidewalk lt. fence rt.
10..380'
11..720' ob line lt. apts. on rt.
12..1017' ob line lt. ob line rt.
13..355' ob water in frt. & rt. side. sidewalk 35' behind
14..429' ob water on lt.
15..663' ob far lt.
16..669' ob line rt. sidewalk lt.
17..363' ob water and gunite. must carry 330'-340' over water
18..558' sidewalk lt. street on rt.

Keith, sorry for not responding to you yesterday about the fountain. There is 1 zag, and that's from hole 2 to 3. We needed to have a hole between long 2 and reg. 3, so Dan put a doinker inbetween. Then you play regular 3. After that you walk over to old hole 1 by the corner of the parking lot, and play a shortened version of the original. The rest you should be able to figure out by the map.
