I just looked at the map of the Fountain. That is a map of the short course. The differences are, hole 2 goes past the big palm to old 13 basket, by the water. Added short hole 3(not shown), by the cabana. 7 is longer and by the water(great hole). 8 and 9 are combined and longer (another great hole), and 10 is longer.

Folks,

Last year, The Memorial had 260+ players on one course. The only way it was possible to accomplish that was by going with tee times every 7 minutes (we tried 8 minute tee times on Friday, but the Pro Women finished in the twlight), teeing the Ams first because they were only playing 18 holes, and then starting the Pros on the back 6 while there were still 6 Am groups left to tee. That way, hopefully, the Pro groups would just fill in behind the last Am group.

This year, the scheduling should be a bit easier with 2 courses, depends on how many more entries we get.

Sunrise is a few minutes before 7, so we could tee off as early as 7. Sunset is around 6:25, so we'd want everyone off the course by 6:30 at the very latest, and earlier, if possible. We worked with Dan on the schedule last year, so I'm sure we'll get it worked out this year as well. There'll probably be better info on the schedule as soon as we know how many players we'll have for sure.

I am thinking about going to this. Who needs spring break when I could go here!

Problem is I would be traveling alone and can't afford to hotel by myself(obviously). If anyone has floor room in their hotel room or in their house I would be grateful if you could help me out. the cheapest airfare I could find would have me getting there wed. night and leaving monday. Please PM me if you can help me out, or know someone who could.

Thanks

thanks russ!!...

because of the ams playing shorter vista the pros started on the other side so that the baskets could be changed as the ams finished the holes and before the pros got there

you have to remember it was 3(yes 3)memorials ago when we had both courses....the last 2 were just vista..

i'm sure with both course and the daylight available...if it stays no more than 225 players or so it would work out fine...

i can't wait to check it out and yes it WILL BE nicer at vista to start on 1 than old hole a-c :D

see you there,

How will the round ratings work for those am's playing from the shorter tees? Obviously the scores can not be compared to the advanced men scores. Any input from Chuck, Russel, etc. would be greatly appreciated :D

ck34
Jan 27 2006, 11:41 AM
No problem as long the TD reports the different layouts properly in the TD report and which divisions played what layout, what round.

keldog
Jan 27 2006, 12:52 PM
so if an Am. and Pro scored the same on a round at the same place same lay-out do they get the same rating?

ck34
Jan 27 2006, 01:06 PM
Yes. It's only when two players play the same course in different rounds that they might get a different rating. The problem with tee time events like the Memorial is the weather conditions might be quite different for one division versus another who start and end so far apart in the sequence that the times they are on the course don't even overlap. But they would all get the same rating for the same score the way we do it now, assuming they played the same layout.

1. First I signed my twin brother up for this event and paid it for him, cause he lives out in the 4 corners area (NM/CO/AZ and whatever the 4th one is).

2. Then he tells me he doesn't want his first tournament to be an A tier, he wants me to play it in his place.

3. Today I signed up to play with him so we will both be advanced GM.

4. Now I'm thinking, this is gonna cost me several thousand dollars, airfair, hotels, lost time at work, and I'll probably get sunburned in Arizona.

My quesiton is, is this tournament worth spending a few thousand dollars like I said, or at least driving out there and living in my van to avoid hotel and air costs but that means living in a van and not taking a bath for 4 or 5 days.

Worth it?

Not sure what you do for a living but unless 'south of the hurricane' means your driving from Brazil, not sure how your math adds up to thousands of $. I went to Worlds in Flagstaff for a week for less than $600. Bring a cooler and eat sandwiches, buy 6-packs instead of going to bars, use faucets instead of bottled water, etc etc. If you need tips of doing it cheap, I know 'em.
So, yes, it's worth it.
Pull the trigger and have a blast playing disc golf for the weekend with you brother!

From my understanding, there is a certain date that the T.D. has to hold 25 spots for touring players until 14 days before the event. Currently there are 176 spots filled on the website, so the people that currently register will start a waitlist and fill in those spots that touring players do not. That is my guess.... :)

Well you do play 2 rds @ Vista. You definately need to see the Fountain, and you may want to play just for fun, because it is a fun layout. They didn't get the cement tees in, so they will have to change some of the tees.

The Fountain will be maybe a par 57 or 58, Vista is a 10000 foot monster 18 par 66, similar to (but not as nice) tha LaMirada long 18 set up, but with maybe more OB. Concentrate on getting 3s on the par 4s at vista, and you'll do well.

We're at 118 days of no rain. A freak storm would be just what the doctor ordered. See ya in a couple of weeks, unless of course you get a wild hair up your a## and come see us in Vegas $$$$

I can put these online if people want me to do that. Not sure if the fountain tees I played were the ones we will be playing, I bet there are some longer tees out there......

If you look on page 8 of this thread you will find 2 good ariel photos of the courses that Chuck filled in the holes. It is pretty acurate and it might give you some idea of the layout. Also somewhere in this thread I posted all the distances for the Scottsdale course.

Seems there are a few local intermediate players that shouldn't be.

At some point you have to pay for success!

Intermediate - available to amateur players of all ages with player ratings < 915. Developing players who have played 2-3 years and are gaining consistency and experience. Throw 250-350 feet, make 5-7/10 putts from 20 feet, learning different shots. Score range: <63.

In defense to these postings, there is only one tournament rated, with only one good round in that tournament to skew the rating. On top of that in that tournament the int division did not have to play the OB rules so it really is an unfair rating. This rating system is pretty flawed without a few more rounds to get a true average to build on. I can attest to being an average at best int player who has only been playing for about 10 months now.
P.S. my last score in a tournament was 65/61 definitely not advanced level by any means :o Maybe next year

Regardless.........If the PDGA says your rating is 915 OR ABOVE then you MAY NOT Play INT...... PERIOD.........It really doesnt matter if youve played 1 event or 50. :p

If one division plays under a different set of rules than another, they need to be rated separately. It's up to the TD to report this in the event report so the ratings are done properly. What event was this and we can check?

Chuck,

I've spent the better part of the afternoon working on Memorial tee times, and I've checked with Dan G. on this one, who ran the Shelly Sharpe Memorial, which is the tournament in question. The INT division needs to be rated separately from the other divisions, as they played less OB (water only) at Vista, and played some shorter tees as well. You'll need to check with Dan for specifics.

The 2 players in question will be allowed to play Intermediate in the Memorial, as the corrections will likely move their rating below 915.

John Chapman
PDGA Competition Director

P.S. It's about 10 degrees here today in Kansas City, and going below zero tonight. BRRRR!

ck34
Feb 18 2006, 11:01 PM
The Shelley Sharpe event has separate ratings each round for two course layouts, one with sidewalk OB and one without. It shows all Ams playing the easier OB and all Pros playing the tougher OB. So, unless the Intermediates played some even shorter tees than the Advanced, the ratings were done correctly. If they did play shorter ones, then we'll need to correct those Intermediate Decemebr ratings.

Played a practice round on the frozen tundra of Badlands here in Denver. Talk about cold. In the middle of some fairways we had to tee-off around snow boarders going down the big hills in the park. At tee-off it was 2 degrees!! :p When we finished the 27 holes it was......... 1 degree!! Good thing it wasn't too windy. Just a little that caused the wind chill to be at -13.

A week ago here it was in the 50's!! Feels like I'm back living in Montana this week. Gotta love it. Can't wait to play in Arizona. Just to play in normal clothing will be nice. Look forward to watching a disc fly in normal weather. Yesterday in the cold I was lucky to get one drive over 425.

Ask and ye shall receive.

The tee times are posted now at pdga.com, and should be posted at disqman.com soon.

DISCLAIMER: These tee times are somewhat tentative. We'll be getting some adds and drops over the next few days. Your tee time may move between now and next Friday, but it shouldn't move more than 24 minutes one way or the other, and probably it'll only move 8 minutes if it moves at all. You may also get placed in a different group depending on whether or not we lose a group or have to add a group in your division.

Make sure you check your tee time on Thursday when you check in.

Here's my guess:

<table border="1"><tr><td>Division(s)</td><td>Friday</td><td>Saturday</td><td>Sunday
</td></tr><tr><td>MA1</td><td>Middle</td><td>Early</td><td>Late
</td></tr><tr><td>MM1/MG1</td><td>Early</td><td>Late</td><td>Middle

Rhett,

Sunday, we're shooting for this order (but this is NOT set in stone):

FW2
MA2
MG1
MM1
FW1
MA1

I'll try and post something about Saturday and Sunday down the line for both Pro and Am. I need to clear it with Dan first. Basically, I'm trying to avoid someone finishing their round at 6:00PM and then having to start the next morning at 7:30AM.

As far as the Friday tee assignments go, I'm responsible for those as well, so I'll take the blame or credit for those, take your pick. Will Kriewald, I figure someone who travels 2000 miles with someone shouldn't have to play with them in the first round, so I've switched you to another group. Actually, I tried to keep people from the same areas out of the same group, if possible, but there's so many Cali and Arizona people that wasn't always possible. I can definitely split up a Connecticut and a Joisey guy, though. You're still in back to back groups.

Keith,

We're playing 18 holes at Vista and Fountain as opposed to 24 holes at Vista last year. We got through last year with some even later tee times, so I think we're going to be ok here. Even though the 18 holes are longer and on the same territory as the 24 holes were, the 18 should still play faster than the 24 did.

john....you are forgetting that i KNOW the course at vista and how it plays time-wise and player-wise with all the ob's...that and the fact that players don't seem to want to tee off on a 1000 foot hole until the last person putts out in case they might hit them with their drive :p

last year there was also the fact that players STARTED across the way while the am's played the "short no ob course" in front of them....having ALL players playing ob on the course will DEFINATELY lengthen the time of playing and by having the times that late it will DEFINATELY threaten finishing before twilight i'm betting....and that's if there is no weather delays
adding 16 extra players added 32 minutes to the tee times pushing finishing times towards the darkness....

it won't personally affect me on friday and with the pro open i assume going last on sunday it may only affect me at the fountain course(which sometimes is better to play in the dark :D)

i'm just feeling sorry for those players as it sukks to have to deal with it as i and about 50 others had to do a couple of years ago

Play anyways !!!!! http://jm.g.free.fr/smileys/halm.gif

I'm bringin the rain with me...

I sure hope so! Hey, you still have my umbrella? I loaned it to you and haven't seen it since then! I think I gave it to you for worlds or something last year!

No...I gave it back to you along with your Helly Hansen jacket...Nice try though.

All of us out of state/non-local players really appreciate the information/maps of the course. One question, is the layout/map of the Fountain course that has been pointed to and posted as it will be on tournament day, or will it be different?

Wow, the sign maps are very nice! Thanks for posting the link. Very helpfull (and intimidating) for some of us, lol. OMG ... look at all that OB and WATER! Yikes! :p Are divers going to be posted at those holes for disc retrieval? HA HA!

I played Vista many years ago and when I started taking my shoes and socks off to get a disc I was told that the local police ride up and down the sidewalk and write tickets for getting in the water, no warnings. So, will there be retrieval devices or spotters with such a device to assist in getting disc back in the allotted time. Or will someone go in at different times of the day and put them in a lost and found area. Or are there local kids foaming at the mouth ready to grab as many as they can just to turn around and sell them after we head back home.
I know I've been told to bring many backups or/and cash to buy more, but I only have and can afford so many.

I don't believe you are allowed to go in at Vista and you better not go in at the Fountain (or risk severe chemical attack on your shoes and feet, and possibly get cooties). But there are those doing some plastic fishing from the shore at Vista and even some, I'm pretty sure, that execute stealth missions out in the water when the patrol isn't watching. There will be some spotters that may try to save your disc if it's just hitting near the edge or barely slipping in.

For some reason it's tough to find a wide variety of Innova replacement discs for sale at the DISCRAFT Memorial. So, if that's what you throw, even more important to bring backups.

Thanks for the map folks! Am having some printing issues w/them getting them all on one page, but heck, I appreciate the effort!! :D:D

My how things have changed... when I was a kid in the 70's we used to swim in those lakes (at Vista) and retrieve softballs the neighbor kids would hit to us. The water was much cleaner back then... before the great flood of '72 that created the entire wash from north scottsdale all the way into tempe. All those darn freeways now really screw me up too every time I go back there!

2 fun things to do on your free time - go to the Greyhound Race Track - either on Washington or Van Buren. The greyhounds race around a track chasing a fake rabbit...that they can't catch... poor things...

and then there's the Golden Eagle Restaurant at the top of the tallest building downtown Phoenix. The building used to be called the Valley National Bank building but that's probably changed too. But I'm sure the restaurant is still up there. Having cocktails while the sun goes down over the Valley is really something cool to witness. :D:D

it's actually in a shopping center that borders the course on the one end(original part)of the course with a balcony that overlooks hole 8 in the memorial configuration(original short hole 12)...and with tee times there is always a crowd of disc golfers to cheer, jeer,or heckle people on the teepad....

pretty much if you see ANY baskets and you see ANY people with discs when you are at vista,i would be willing to bet you a million dollars they can show you where duke's is!

Vista:

If there is no flooding, and no one has stirred up the mud, you will be able to get any disc within reach of a retriever. In between rounds, I would think that the local rakers would be out and would rake the major water holes. There will probably be "recon retreivers" who wade in the pond to get them out of the middle. This is illegal, and is at a minimum a ticket, yet they do their work at night.

Fountain:

Unless you are within 3 feet good luck :(. Rakers don't work either.

Feb 26 2006, 10:51 PM
They are still very playable, most of them are at least 100' ft wide or so, and they dont start to get narrow until you get closer to the basket, so your first throws are generally pretty safe still. Diffenently a challenge but still fun! :D
As far as retrieving, you are probably 50/50 depending on which lake you go out on, and how far out, some of them are prettty shallow for a while...

Three Points:

1) As posted earlier, I still have a space available in my hotel room for at least one person. Right now there are three guys (myself included). Anyone is welcome :D

2) My friend Mike is playing advanced, and as such, has an early tee time on Friday. I was thinking about caddying for him, and him for me later in the afternoon as I'm playing intermediate. This would give us both a bit of extra energy, plus the chance to play the course with another set of eyes and opinions. Any rules against this?

3) Obviously the collar rule is in effect for the pros. Is it in effect for the ams as well?

It won't be yellow rope. The OB line will be painted lines with flags so you can see from the tee. We will be re-painting these lines all weekend because of the traffic and the dry grass. The lines are painted now for play. The fairways look pretty narrow, but most still use drivers and rollers off the tee.

All baskets at the fountain are going to be upgraded to chainstars by wednesday. All the old baskets are there now for play.

it just makes it more difficult for other td's who are following the rules

It's not what I believe to be true... It is a fact that the ratings were done incorrectly.
Fact 3 holes were shorter than advanced
Fact we did not play 1 one hole in the first round due to a flag football game, so the score for that round is at least 3 strokes lower. (If I read the ratings correctly it is roughly 5-10 points per stroke??) So that is 15-30 depending on the SSA either way it puts the rating below 915, then if they do adjust for the three holes, even if it is only 1 or 2 strokes, that is still at least 5-10 points per round lower, so that is at least the 15 for the one less hole, and at least 5 points for at least one stroke SSA lower per round for int course, so it is at least 20 points lower, which would fall in line with an average int player rating finishing 4th in int or last in advanced
Now just an observation, if we did play the same course, I was second to last in advanced anyways and I was 4th in intermediate, :( so it is not like I am sandbagging or even close to advanced level so I am a little defensive to being forced into a division that is truly full of sandbagging pros :p

Now just an observation, if we did play the same course, I was second to last in advanced anyways and I was 4th in intermediate, :( so it is not like I am sandbagging or even close to advanced level so I am a little defensive to being forced into a division that is truly full of sandbagging pros :p

you forget i was at that event also...i know what was going on...

i'm not saying that it not wrong what happened, but it should be corrected BEFORE the tournament so that so are shown corrected ratings before tee time

i also know how you feel about better players in your division...
i can't even hideout in the masters division as out of 61 players 30(yes 30)have ratings that are 990 or higher...with 12 being rated OVER 1000

there is less or close tothe same number of 990 and higher guys in the open division which has 100 players in it!

but i'll just play my game and we'll see what happens at the end of the three rounds

see you there

Just my opinion, but it seems that there should be a minimum amount of tournaments before your rating should be enforced, like 3 or something, the rating is similar to a handicap system which would also need a couple of scores to make accurate.

Anyway, if they force the int division to move up, then all the players 955+ according to guide would have to move from advanced to pro, there are at least 5 of them. Being an average int player as of right now I would not look forward to paying out that much money to play against pros and have to battle from being on the bottom card, does not sound like a good time to me

I have to agree that I don't want to play with sandbagging pros either. However when I am on my home course I do play advanced and I do get beat by some int. players that is just how it goes. I hope that I play well enough to play with some of the higher rated inter. players.

Confucius say "only way to improve oneself is to learn from those around you."

1 more day of work, can't wait to get on the road and go play a practice round @ fountain tomorrow.

by the way i in no way meant to stir the pot I just wasn't sure what was going on. Lets have some fun and go throw.

I thought SoCal was going to form like VOLTRON? I was going to be the left foot. Now how am I supposed to kick it?

Yellow Lion: Piloted by Hunk. Forms the left leg of Voltron. The Yellow Lion sits in the middle of the desert in a cave.

Gomez will be whoever the chick was, if I remember there was a chick, there always is a chick, and it would definitely be Gomez.

FYI - One of our party has dropped out so it looks like there will be at least one opening for the first person on their waiting list. However, I can't remember if he was signed up for pro or masters dudes but he's definitely NOT an am.

NC has some playas going out to AZ
Good luck to Mike Hofmann and Adam Olsen in the Open division and Carlton Howard, Larry Leonard, and Kirk Yoo in the Masters Division
They should rep NC well.

If these players win, then argue that it isnt fair, but dont argue something that hasnt happened yet, do your best and beat them, then this will prove you were right or wrong

Yeah baby the Fountain is back, Vista may not have yellow rope, but it has pink flags and blue spray paint. Anybody shooting in the 50's will have a smoke'n round for these 18 holes. Top doubles round was a 56, not the most talented field with most pros choosing to sit doubles out. But Dukes has like 300 disc golfers in and around. It's a mecca...Kind of miss my buddies from NC, but "Discraft" Larry is trying to make up for it. Peace out, from the valley of the sun, <small gotta get sunblock> :D

Are they going to have scoring updates each day? Sorry if this has already been discussed. Keep an eye out for Will Schusterick playing in Int.

With the staff and marshals that are there, I would expect regular updates all day long as the groups come in. All scores have to be posted each day because tee times need to be assigned for the next day

I think that 58 looks awful hot with a preliminary 1060 rating. I think there are a few par 4s and 5s out there that should be reflected in the par for the course being entered as more than 54 in the online software so the over/under looks reasonable.

Before Keith gets back on here, looks like he was right. I talked with Brian Donahue waiting near the tee after he took an hour to play just the first three holes in Climo's group. They had a four group backup on the 1000' hole #4 with two mandos. Looks like they'll need the flashlights for the old guys teeing off now.

Someone let me know when the Mills v Barry card comes in. I got trillion to one odds riding on Mills if he beats Barry first round. I only put up a penny, but that's still 10 billion if Mills wins and the other side of the bet doesn't welch.
