I don't know about these guys, look at the very top of the pre-reg list, you'll find a 968 rated player, that took cash at Cross Canyon last month. How does that fly? I guess I'll tell Chad Hein he can play too.

RonSTL
Mar 17 2006, 02:14 PM
I would question this. I believe if you accept cash and are above 950 rating you cannot play AMs. Just verified about the Canyon. The only real question is that a mistake on the canyon tourny results where this person DID NOT accept cash?

The ratings break is above 954 not above 950, but 968 is certainly too high if the player accepted cash and is trying to play Advanced.

Getting a three on #2 at Hobson is a birdie in the best weather conditions.

Taking a 4 you will not lose strokes to the field. Last year in my group I took a great 3 (second shot under the basket) but everyone else went 4,5,6!

At Nat's Howler this past fall I took a gimmie four because my long putt for three hit basket low. But I did not lose a stroke for taking the 4.

I would like to break par at Hobson. I have played it three times, twice in comp once in practice, each time shooting a 54!

But last year, 54 was a hot round at Hobson, driving rain, howling wind and just above freezing rain. Let's hope that Larry applied for good weather.

The 968 rated player you are talking about is Tod Abrahamson, he is an outstanding player, but his "cash" at the canyon was actually a disc. I know this only becasue I see him seldomly and compete against him occasionally and I asked him about it. He said he would have most certainly not accepted the prize if it was cash because he plans on attending worlds this year in Tulsa. Saying all this, yes he is eligable because it was not cash and the TD for the canyon listed it as cash instaed of cash value instead of disc.

scoop
Mar 17 2006, 10:23 PM
So, he played in a sanctioned event as a Pro, and placed in the cash? Rather than accepting the cash, he accepted an alternative prize, which has a cash value equivalent to the amount of cash that he "refused"?

Sounds like he's now a Pro to me.

If he wanted to retain his "Am" status, he should have refused the disc too. I hope he didn't get a non-refundable airline ticket to BG.

ck34
Mar 17 2006, 10:35 PM
Ams entering Open should be paying the discounted Trophy Only entry fee, presuming the TD is on top of that, unless the Am is planning to turn pro if he cashes. It makes little sense to enter at the full entry fee if he's not going to turn pro if he cashes because he's not allowed to receive any prizes other than Ace fund or CTPs (and the TD should know better not to award prizes in lieu of cash to Ams in the Open division who plan to remain Ams).

bruce_brakel
Mar 17 2006, 10:47 PM
No, Chuck, that rule was deleted in the new rules and replaced with a standards document. The new standards document makes a player a pro only if they take "prize money" in a pro division or register as a pro. The new standard omitted the former rule language about taking prizes in lieu of cash having the same effect.

That player is fully eligible to play amateur if he took that disc in a 2006 tournament.

I started a thread in the rules section if anyone wants to continue this discussion.

Mar 17 2006, 11:03 PM
Well, if that's the case, it's time to shout it from the rooftops and get more of those top Ams entering Pro and accepting merch in lieu of cash if that's allowed. We had several Ams in the late 90s in Minnesota who we encouraged to play pro for merch prizes (if they cashed) before the rule was changed. Sorry I missed that little tweak in the 2006 documents as a member of the Competition Committee.

You could always play the new A tier - 2006 St. Louis Open, the May 20 and 21. We'll have a player pack valued more than your entry with an Innova disc, Gateway disc and Discraft along with a shirt minium for all AM divisions. And we also have a low entry like Bowling Green. Free beer by New Belgium Saturday and free dinner by our own Gary Suarez who is on of St. Louis' top chefs.

The'll be an ad in your player's pack with detail on the event.

The Bowling Green AMs is a great tournament, the'll be over a dozen guys from St. Louis.

So, if you don't get your fill of golf early April, come out mid May to St. Louis with 4 newly renovated awesome courses with concrete tees.

I play AM Master and I am turning pro after worlds, and this is very weak to me. You should NOT be able to accept cash or merchandise if AM in a pro tourny. I also played pro at the canyon knowing perfectly well if I cashed I would have to turn it down. Very weak arguement in my opinion.

As Bruce indicated, I believe it was an oversight in the revised 2006 Tour docs that he caught and hadn't been posted before. It will be checked next week to get the scoop. I'm pretty sure a change to allow Ams to accept merch if cashing in Open wasn't discussed on the Competition Committee. But it doesn't appear to prevent it in the 2006 docs as Bruce posted.

You would be talking about an quaranteed win in Adv versus a cashing spot in Open, or easily winning Open ?

Why would a player interested in the amount of prizes he can win play in the pro field ? The winner of the larger adv division should get more value more often winning the adv div than cashing in the open field.

Why the #[email protected]# would you still play AM if your good enough to cash in pro? I'm a believer in playing up to help your game. Last year I stayed down in MA2 because I thought I wasn't good enough. Turns out I was right, I continually get beat on by the MA1 players. BUT...my game gets better every time I play MA1. If I knew I could cash in Open I wouldn't be playing Am. I guess some of us just have different morals.

Thanks for letting me rant...

Check out the Ams playing pro thread that Bruce started.

I think that one motivating factor is this:
Let's say you're a 956-970 rated player. You probably wouldn't be good enough to cash at a NT consistently, but definately good enough to win at local events. Under this system, a player can play open, win the event, and walk away with a cash equivalent (discs) in lieu of the winnings (cash) he can't take that would eliminate his am status. So he wins even more plastic than the 953 player that won in advanced, and stockpiles plastic, and before long, we have these guys all running the am-scams for profit. It's like saying, "Oh, you want to decline the cash, so you can still be an am? OK, here's a winning lottery ticket, just go cash it in."

And the cash can't be redistributed to the REAL pros that cashed, since the BAGGER took a cash equivalent. Who else wins? The TD---profiting from the am divisions, and now, from the ams that cash in the open divisions.

My wager is that a lid gets put on this-------real soon.

Just wondering if there is a cap on the number of Men's Advanced, Women's Advanced, and Advanced Masters players?

According to the BG Web site, these three divisions are playing the traditional four courses, with all other divisions playing the alternate courses.

If that is so, then 4 courses x 18 holes = 72 holes.
4 players per card x 72 holes = 288 players
5 players per card x 72 holes = 360 players.

So, it seems that 360 would be the cap on MA1, FA1, and MM1 total players, right?

If so, then there are already 267 total players registered in these three divisions (and I'm betting Larry has more since this number hasn't been updated in several days).

Sound like you better get registered if you haven't already.

Gimmie_tha_Roc

Are these going to be two seperate events?
Or are you taking scores from the 12:00 tee time and 3:00 tee times and determining the winner that way?
Can a person play both tee times?

Rooster-They will most likely have different tee times for different pools, there are no caps for any division at BG.

Lefty-Lovers is only 18, I'm sure a doubles round wouldn't take more than 3 hours. So there would be 2 different competitions, and 2 sets of CTPs. You could play twice.

I'm not so sure that's true. Larry stated that the reason to go to the additional 4 courses was to eliminate having three flights like we did last year (three tee times per course).

As it is, if there are 360 players, two complete flights will be filled for each course (Pools A&B would occupy two courses for two rounds each day, while Pools C&D would occupy the other two courses for two rounds each day).

To add more than 360 players to the existing 4 courses would require adding an additional flight, bringing us back to the three flights that Larry said they were trying to eleminate this year.

Parkntwoputt
Mar 21 2006, 03:10 PM
I am just wondering where you got your information from?

Personally if I was Larry, I would cap advanced at 270 and leave the other course to allow for the Advanced Master and Women to play.

But I am not Larry. We might have Advanced players on all four courses at once.

DSproAVIAR
Mar 21 2006, 03:50 PM
I didn't realize Larry was trying to eliminate the different flights. I have no solid information, but BG has never been capped, and I was suspecting that it never would be. I sure hope there's no cap, I was planning on competing with 300 AM1's. If there was a cap, I would think that the tourny flyer would state this. I feel sorry for Larry when I say this (knowing the all-nighters some TDs pulled last year) but, if the flyer doesn't define a cap #, there will probably be a need to do different flights, because 550+ golfers are probably planning this trip. I don't really care tho, all I know for sure is that I'm registered.

edit: Actually I know something else for sure- The supercolor design from Dcraft for this tourny looks sweeet.

GDL
Mar 21 2006, 04:35 PM
I think that the reason Larry added the four courses was for the lower divisions. (Intermediate, jrs) I think that advanced will be divided into 4 pools. If there are 250 players in advanced, you'd need four pools with players on every course to accommodate all the players, unless you like playing in 7somes.

250 players divided by 72 holes (four courses) = 3.47

That leaves room for spacing out foursomes, at the 250 mark. Once (if) we pass 288 players, there will be 5somes, but not any 6 somes till we pass 360 players in the division, and I don't think that'll happen. We're only at 417 total, now. And that's all divisions.

I bet there will be 4 pools, probably mostly around 60 people in each. (for advanced)

Parkntwoputt
Mar 21 2006, 04:38 PM
There is a capacity of 720 golfers.

That is putting 5-somes on everyhole.

This has to be split evenly between all Advanced and all Am's. Leaving a capacity of 360 total advanced players. Or else Adv Masters and Adv Women will have to play on the JV courses too. That is if there is enough room, the division splits may not be enough.

I will not play in a tournament that has 6-somes. That is ridiculous. I am sure Larry has taken care of it and has everything planned out, he is a good TD.

Personally, I would cap all events at 4/hole. If players cannot manage to preregister then why should they play? Plan ahead and get in, procrastinate and wait until next year. (this last paragraph is not directed in anyway towards the BG Am tournament, the Bowling Green Disc Golf Club, or any official or volunteer of the BG Am Championship).

For all those concerned I have just updated the list and we just about have as many pre-registered as we had for the tourney last year. We expected over 500 and figured with the mentioning of the first 400 getting a great players package the majority would pre-register. I sure hope most due to help with scheduling and decisions to be made.

As far as cap we don't plan to have one. We do have some things that can be done if they have to. One would be to move the Adv Masters and Adv women to the other courses to allow for more Adv. Men

As for these being JV courses they are not. They are different than the others but by no means crappy courses or I wouldn't play them at all. They are intended for your lower skill levels. That being said I don't mean to say the Adv Masters are a lower skill level just a smaller # and would be easier to move. (Not final yet)

As for player per group those that have played here before can tell you most of our courses play pretty quick even with 5'somes so that is what we plan for.

The current break down looks like this.
Adv - A, B , C (39 left to fill it)
Adv Masters and Adv Women - D ( 26 to fill it)
All others - E, F ( 20 left to fill it )

I have already made plans for a 7th pool to be used however it needs to be done. I know we have taken on a big challenge this year by not capping but figure the players would want that. We will see how it goes and may go to a cap or even pre-register only next year. Anyway the time is counting down I hope you all the safest of travels here and back.

A PMed responce would be cool and I would keep the info to myself. I just wondered since I was one of the 55 to register after 400 because of some finacial problems as of late and I was wondering what to expect and wish I had the money earlier cuz your players packs are always awesome.

Thanks again for busting your butt and running such a great event year after year.

As for these (MA2 courses) being JV courses they are not. They are different than the others but by no means crappy courses or I wouldn't play them at all. They are intended for your lower skill levels. That being said I don't mean to say the Adv Masters are a lower skill level just a smaller # and would be easier to move. (Not final yet)

I'm playing MA2, I'm going to try to arrive on Thursday/early Friday. Could you recommend which courses to play assuming i only have time for two of them?

We are at the Microtel right next to Cracker Barrell off the interstate.

No, I am not playing the organized doubles at Lovers. I really don't need the practice there. Hobson and Keriakes is where it is at. I will be at Hobson at 11am, followed by Keraikes at 3pm on Friday.

Plus Steve would get bored with me carrying him for the entire doubles round, he would be dissapointed because we would not be using any of his drives or putts. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We tried to get Steve into the SN Am Championship. Hanan Browning from Birmingham was my partner for SN Dubs. But good thing Steve did not go because he probably would have beaten the stuff out of the guys doing the payout. Especially traveling all the way from Michigan for a skill shot, or was it a DB-5?

If at all possible, please allow the Adv. Women to play the courses that have been planned on. Could we play fivesomes or have extra pools? All of the Adv. Women will probably fit on four to five cards! I know that we have all been looking forward to playing these great courses!

Well, not many of the people who beat me last year are back this year. And Bowling Green is one of my favorite places to play. As well, you thinking your sitting pretty on the A-pool may not play as agressive thinking that no one from the B-pool can do anything to beat you. Remember, pools are only based on ratings, and last year I placed high with an 867 player rating.

I have a nice cradle of players in the same boat as me playing in the B-pool. It's kinda the same mentality from entering the final round of a tourney on the second card only a few shots out of the lead. Anything goes man.

Plus, it's all fun anyways right. Every touranment is just practice for Worlds.

Parkntwoputt,

Do not sweat dubs unless you absolutely need gas money. Any course can be played, knowing, you know, big T town. The course that you can really slip on is Hobson. I have shot +6 and -1 in the old man division. Do NOT take this course lightly. Then, I absolutely love Keriakes. 40 ft. high and 20 ft. wide disc catchers are everywhere. If you play Keriakes look for the over route. Over the disc catchers. You can score very well by going over. Do not sweat it. White LONG and open(Period), Lovers more trees, kind of like Haikey w/tad more elevation and not quite as long. You can knock scores there w/accurate hyzers.

Peace and good luck at the biggest AM tourny in the Country.
Definitely see earilier post. I will be there in the old man division.

Thank Ron, this is my thrid tourny to Bowling Green in a year. I know Hobson and Keriakes pretty well.

As for an informal doubles at Keriakes, I am only half interested. I am playing Hobson first, then Keriakes. Either way I am playing both courses on Friday, doubles or not. The doubles thing is more of a social event then competition or money raising. $5 just makes it interesting. I have a hybrid so the BG round trip will only cost me $30 in gas, so I don't need gas money.

I am excited to play white with the OB. But Lovers and White don't need practice.

Thanks man.

I'd pick Hobson and Kereiakes too, but ...White is totally different with the OB. You think you know the distances to cross the walking path or stay between the walking paths, etc. That hyzer you take for hole #13 looks a lot scarier when you have to keep it between the paths...not to mention the bunkers on Hole #3! Don't underestimate the power of White!! :D;)

Do to the overwhelming number of players there isn't room to do anything at the Host Hotel. All players party stuff will be held at the Knight Of Columbus which is about 3 miles from the Host Hotel on Lovers Lane.

Current pre-registered list has all entries up till Feb 23 by online and snail mail. We are almost at 200 pre-registered so make sure and let your buddies know if they want the main players package that they need to get it in, as only the 1st 400 to pre-register get it.

This years players package will have:
Innova Starline (wraith or teebird)
Discraft full color Spectra ( I think )
Gateway Element
DGA ghost stamped Squall
Custom stamped tee-shirt
Mini
and what ever else we can get between now and then.

Should answer your question.........

See there is a difference here. There are two personas. It is just like MTL and Robert Leonard. Here we have Big_DG_Pimpin and Steve Mills

Big_DG_Pimpin is a smack talking mofo who is going to clean everyones clocks at Bowling Green, win every other A-Tier on the circut, and go uncontested at Am Worlds with a nice wrap up taking first second and third at USADGC. After that Big_DG_Pimpin might consider dabbling in the Open division, but he has some goals he would like to meet first.

Now Steve Mills is just like everyother good amateur player. On a good day, he is as good as every other pro. On a bad day, you think he just started playing. He has good rounds and bad rounds, and is actually humble. And like any other good advanced player, if he has a solid week at Am worlds, he can be in contention to win, one bad round and he is out of the finals but still a top finisher, however it is lilkely possible for Steve, like all top ams to have a bad tournament and not even cash.

On the forums, Big_DG_Pimpin likes to speak for Steve and talk up his skills. Just ignore Big_DG_Pimpin. He is a bafoon.

Let's set this MI record straight---
Andrew Pola, although he may be a good golfer, has only 1 rated tourny. As do most of MI's top rated golfers. The best accurately-rated AM in MI right now is Benny Calhoun.
And I know, you'd expect things to change when you speak to him face to face, but Mills is about the same person as you hear now. Actually the only real change in person is that he's much louder. If he wanted to accurately relay his personality, he would use 16-18 pt type, ALL CAPS, and bold on every statement he makes.

I freely admit that many, many, many disc golfers are better than I am at the sport of disc golf. Yet, that simple fact does not diminish my absolute enjoyment of the sport in the least.

There are countless other things in my life that give me equal or more enjoyment. Few, if any, of those things have a ratings system. And I take disc golf less seriously than almost all of those other things.

A true professional is genuinely humble or has learned to hide his ego about his teaching and playing ability. A true professional does not talk incessantly about all the world-class players they have worked with. They do not name-drop, nor do they go on about whom they have beaten as a player. Rather they focus on their progress. This is not to suggest that a true professional doesnt have an ego. There is a distinction between a strong ego (good thing) and a big ego (not such a good thing).

We have (10) teams pre-registered (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=S&Product_Code=9100-LLDET&Category_Code=9100) and I know of 3 or 4 teams from Florida that have yet to register, bring the total to around (15) teams. With the amount of smack talk and shots across the bow, I figured we see some of these folks registered.

The 3:00pm Tee Time has the most entries so far but I know some teams had talked about playing both the Noon and 3:00pm rounds. Also, we will have "rolling" tee times for both rounds (12 Noon-1pm & 3:00pm-4:00pm) to accomodate players that are arriving in town for the weekend.

So far, the CryZtal Buzzz is the hot item being picked for the players packages with the "Ice" Z Wasp right behind it.

It's all fun. If Mills wants to pump up all this pressure for him to do well then that is just fine. As for me, I know I have the potential to do well again this year, and actually even better, so yes it is a possibility for me to make the finals. Will I? Who knows? I wish I could predict the outcomes of Disc Golf tournaments. Heck you can not even base the outcome off the first round. I have won tournaments coming from the last card during the second round, and I have finished on the last card after only being a few shots off the lead during the second round.

Anything can happen. And as for me, I enjoy giving Mills a hard time for all the smack he talks.

I am looking forward to this event. I will be starting off in the B-pool, so since my PDGA assigned arbitary number says I will not place in the top 1/3, then there is no pressure on me. Because Erron Salazar is now expected to win because his PDGA assigned arbitary number is the highest.

Best of luck everybody, and make the best statistic win!

Hobson #13 has been moved long and will be played just as the Pro's will play it. We will use long #10 as well.

Preston Miller - we are working to get this course playable, will know more after this weekend. If it isn't playable then we will use Bassil Griffin Park twice for those pools having to play here.

What happened? That third round looked pretty rough for the top card?

Parkntwoputt
Mar 27 2006, 11:00 AM
Yeah my strategy going into the 3rd round was very simple. I was 8 shots behind first, and 4 ahead of third. So I just wanted to play solid, smart, and maintain. I wasn't trying anything risky to catch up to 1st. Obviously that did not happen.

3rd and 4th round were on the same course.

3rd was long, 4th was "shorter"

#8 featured a 1167ft hole winding 50ft fairway between a pine grove and thick shule. The fairway was as narrow as 20ft for the last 150ft to the pin. 6 was PAR! On the lead card, in respective of 1st thru 4th at the time, the scores were 7,7,6,9! It took us 25 minutes to play that one hole.

Birdies were very hard to get out there.

My putt was off on Sunday, combined with all birdie putts were outside 50ft, and all par putts were inside 10ft. Redstone Arsenal (3rd/4th rounds) is very unforgiving. My buddy who played his second tournament ever sandbagged MA2 in his first PDGA event ever and finished 2nd. He beat me on 3 out of 4 courses and would have finished 2nd in Advanced. Needless to say this was his last MA2 tournament. And yes, MA2 and MA1 played the same configuration. Just check his round ratings (Jeremy Drake).

Unfortunately he cannot afford to go to Bowling Green Am's. He also has soccer practice as he is the starting goalie for the UAB Soccer Team. Disc Golf is secondary to him, we are trying to change that.

Parkntwoputt
Mar 27 2006, 12:37 PM
Round 1 - UAH Par is really 59. Course record is 50.
Windy ~15mph and cold, tee off was 37 degrees

Round 2 - Brahan Springs, par 54.
Tight and wooded, winds picked up near 20mph
Temperature reached high of 45 degrees

Round 3 - Redstone Long par 58 (did not change on TD report)
light winds, sunny and warm. Just a brutal course.

Round 4 - Redstone short par 54
Ideal conditions, 55 degrees.

UAH is very comparable with White Park in Bowling Green. Long, usually very windy, but there is two holes throwing long over water, four that envolve a creek, lots of OB pavement. And heavy thick shule on 5 of the holes.

It really was a good warmup event for Bowling Green.

Friday, rain n howling wind = +15 @ hobson/keriakes
Saturday, sunshine = -3 @ lovers/white

The weather sure spanked me.

Who cares what the weather is like. The good golfers will prevail no matter what the conditions are. Cant wait to get down there wednesday and start preparing for the tournament. See all you guys soon :D:D:D

I care about weather. Playing in 65 and sunny sounds alot more fun than playing in rain and cold. I guess I'm just crazy like that /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif And from my past experience, bad weather often just bunches up the amateur ranks.

Hey all-played bg last year for the first time and had a great time (Kereiakes was my favorite). Still playing in AM II though...but we have four different courses to shoot this year . I am going to have time on Friday to play probably two of the new ones...any recommendations as to where my time would be best spent preparing, would be appreciated! Aren't they-Griffin, Miller, Edmonson, & Franklin? Thanks! Bernie-Michigan

Sorry to hear that Billy. I can sympathize, though. At a tournament this weekend, during the first round I broke a bone in my throwing hand (on the top of the hand, just below the pinkie finger) when I smacked a tee sign on my follow through.

I was able to finish the next three rounds, but my hand is swollen and throbbing.

DO NOT USE WEATHER CHANNEL. Always use the local forcasters predictions. They live there and know what to look for easier and more predictably.

You are laying out standards for True Professionals to people that have an aversion to becoming professional. This is an Am Thread.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you this weekend.

I want to play some cards, count me in.

No way. Where is the Blowing? 10mph on Saturday? 7 on Sunday WTF!? And I retract my prediction. There will be 10 Michiganders in the final 9. 15 is just not realistic, it's true.

And I think if this Tstorm on Friday comes true, I might have to skip doubles. Me and my partner will still win, but we'll be playing a different game. (http://www.winjaz.net/16huntington/600%20Cup%20Beirut%20Game%2011%5B1%5D.9.2002%20009 .jpg)

Well, ****, only 1/6th of the entire ADV field is from Michigan (40 of the 240 so far, and 74 in all divisions out of 475 players of the entire tournament).

Hell, even Kentucky...the freakin' host state...only has 26 ADV players (50 overall).

Somebody remember to turn out the lights when ya'll hit the state line on your way South.

I just updated the list of pre-registered with everything we have to date. The online is closed so if you signed up that way and don't see your name you will need to contact titledisc.com and see why they haven't sent your info on to me. As for snail mail I wouldn't recommend sending any more that way because if we don't have it by Friday then you will be required to pay again.

For those wondering there is still room left for registration on Friday night. Those wondering about pools and courses you will play, that info will be given at the players meeting Sat. morning. The reason for that is due to numbers coming in on Friday we may have to move divisions or even pools to different courses.

Those car pooling let us know on Friday night when you check-n and try to check-n together so we can make sure and get you all in the same pool. We will do what we can to help you.

Time is counting down - see you all this weekend.
