It really is going to April next year?!? Well that's good news...when in April? As long as the Pecan Park Open is still on, maybe I can make both!
I wonder when the PDGA is going to put 2006 events on the schedule.
Last years GCCS finale date, April 22-23 will be the 11th Texas States - - yes Pecan is still on :)

Sep 21 2005, 09:54 PM
April 22-23 is perfect. I was worried that it might be the weekend before, which is the same weekend as the Bowling Green Open in KY.
As much as I love Texas State Championships, competing against 470+ AMs on the same weekend is more fun.
Now it looks like I'll get to play in back-to-back A tiers that month.
Yea they would not put a NT up against BG :D

I've been told that many events are moving around a little next year (A and NT). It is going to require a lot of shuffling in a schedule as tight as ours to make it all fit.
scoop
Sep 23 2005, 11:11 AM
Yea they would not put a NT up against BG :D
yeah, except most NT don't hold a candle to Bowling Green (except for the guys and gals in the Pro divisions, as the BG event is AM only). There were 460+ AM players at BG last year --- how many NTs outdrew BG (Worlds, any others...?) The MA1 Division had 267 players.
It's HUGE --- and the cool thing was playing such a big tournament in such a little town, there were disc golfers everywhere...
For Am players BG is the NT event of the year...if not in name, then in actuallity. I'm just glad I get to play in both the BG and Texas States next year.
Hey Vinnie I found a place to crash before I saw your post, but your offer is GREATLY appreciated... I was almost down to not having a place to go and if that sucker had hit as a 4+ we would NOT have wanted to be here lol

The stuff was sent around the time the 1st post was made. I am sure Ben will have it up ASAP or shoot me a check made out to HFDS (Division + Ace if you want it + non-PDGA for non member AMS).

If possible, it's better to stay south of Houston, in Pearland (the town literally across the creek from the Wilmont's #1-2-3). I have a call into one, so I should know more later. I'll post the info for it or all of them later today or tomorrow morning at the latest.

Just because we don't have the money of The Woodlands....
:)
Bass is actually in a good part of the Houston area, as the suburbs are developing new areas all around it. The area around the Dome (where we used to direct people to) is not the best, but slowly improving since the new stadium went in. Still, Pearland is much better, with newer development.
This isn't the place to discuss MacGregor, but I will say it's not what Chris says it is.

Roving bands of municipal ball golfers and cricket players roam the area, so you'd better watch out!
There is no camping in the park, but there is a campground nearby as well. I'll add that to the list to post later.

All I know is I play there every week and never have problems (or had). Blacks and Mexicans do not automatically equal a bad part of town. While the areas nearby (across UH) aren't spectacular the areas between UH and MacGregOr are fine.

Well, if you don't want to paint benches, there are certainly other things that need to be done...pretty good sized tree in #3's tee box for one. That one looks like it's gonna be a 8-man job just to drag it out of there...and there are a lot of tall vegetative obstacles in the fairway there, and all over the Clear Creek side of Wilmont.
Rita didn't seem to do too much damage to Bass, but there is a lot of loose debris laying all over the place out there.
Any sign of the mowing crew yet?

I'm sure that you'll like it Chris...all of you "long-arms" will like the changes! :D
In my humble (short-arm) opinion, all of the changes added at least 1 stroke in distance/difficulty each...with the lone exception of #3 which only favors some of us locals that know the line. :D
#14 is a solid par 5 whereas before, I used to be able to snag a 4 on it occasionally...not any more though!
The good hurricane news is that on Willy's #8, there are some large branches that have blown over and wedged themselves on trees on the steep slope down to the creek. If you overshoot the pin by just a tad, you won't necessarily get punished by being OB in the creek. You might end up with a pretty awkward stance on the steep slope, but those branches might save a penalty stroke! :D
It remains to be seen on how we're gonna deal with OB on #9 this year...there wasn't any water out there at all last weekend. Maybe we'll string it this year...I don't know...

what division did Andi Lehman play?? also how did the salazar's split the same $$ with different scores?
She didnt, she withdrew due to nobody else playing FPM, and not wanting to play FPO.
She was on the courses all weekend for her Boy Toy, Don Young caddying ;)

Boy toy? Maybe her Man Slave.
He'll too close to master age to be considered a boy.
LOL!
Guess you were just jealous. Sure you'd like to be someone's toy! :o
It is just sad that she was not given the option to play Pro Master in the same pool as the other Pro players. :( Being offered to play in the rec pool just doesn't seem right.

WOW offering a pro to play with recs? yuck.
ching_lizard
Oct 24 2005, 05:01 PM
Andi was given an option to play as the only FPM entry, but she was assigned to a card of Intermediate division players - not Rec. division. These are the players comparable to Andi's PDGA player rating. The PDGA states that Pro players can move down to the amateur division where their player rating allows them. This was what was offered and she chose to opt out of based on her rating of 879.
The days of offering 1-person divisions are probably at an end. It is a shame that there aren't more female master players, or female players in general. It sure would be great to see full fields (or even a full card) of female players out there.
Nelle 18131
Oct 24 2005, 05:07 PM
The rule states:
Professional and Amateur players should not be grouped together, and all players from different divisions shall be segregated from each other during play as much as practicable.
Could she have been grouped with the Pro Masters?
She can move down by choice, but cant be forced to move down because there is not anyone else in the division right?

i'd like to give a huge round of applause to Gimp, the staff, and the Houston player community for continuing the impressive tradition of standard-setting events on the three courses that define texas disc golf.
factor in the beautiful weather, then throw in a very generous helping of fat payout in both Pro and Am divisions, and the players who didnt/couldnt make it really missed a winner in this one.
thanks Houston! as always, you did yourself proud!

I concur 100% with Pats' observations. The event was a complete success! The comp in Adv. Masters was epic! Those that choose not to make it missed out on a great Texas tournament. Really didnt want to quote myself but I would like to see some clarification to this. Not causing trouble, just asking some questions.
Why wasnt she put into the Pro pool if she was playing Pro Master? The 2 Open women were put into a Pro pool werent they? What exactly was the difference?
Yes, the player in question could have been grouped with either the Pro Women or the Pro Masters by rule.
An exception was being made to accomodate her 1 person division at the discretion of the tournament staff, as has been done in past TX States, in spite of the tournament's desires in '05 and in spite of rule 804.08A which does not require a TD to open a division of less than 4 players. With PDGA's new policy of allowing small division pro players like the FPM to play in alternative amateur divisions (in this case MM1 or MA2), the tournament staff felt that the best place for this division to play for the sake of the event was with the Intermediate Men due to similar player ratings of the divisions. The player was informed that she would still receive her Pro points and would be paid in a fair and appropriate manner for a 1 person division.
When informed of these accomodations, the player asked to withdraw from the event, and this request was granted and her entry fee fully refunded.

With PDGA's new policy of allowing small division pro players like the FPM to play in alternative amateur divisions (in this case MM1 or MA2), the tournament staff felt that the best place for this division to play for the sake of the event was with the Intermediate Men due to similar player ratings of the divisions.
Actually it does if she doesn't have enough people in the division it shouldn't be offered anyways. Also if she doesn't have the guts to play up with the other ladies then she doesn't deserve to be on the same card. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Could she have been grouped with the Pro Masters?
She can move down by choice, but cant be forced to move down because there is not anyone else in the division right? [/quot
Professional and Amateur players should not be grouped together, and all players from different divisions shall be segregated from each other during play as much as practicable. She cannot be forced to move down but she can be forced to chosse to play FPO, MPO, MPM, MA1,MM1, or MM2 or just not play. Why shoul she pay $80m to play by herself and 1in $110?

I had a blast at States. Thanks to everyone that volunteered and helped run this awesome tourney. I'll never miss another one. Wish I'd brought my game with me this time, but had a freakin blast anyway! Can't wait till next year. The Wilmont lived up to what I've heard about it. I'll have to go work on my 700' plus drives for next year!!!!!haha :D

The TD can offer a division with less tyhan four players and he did so because they are the #1 and #3 players in there division. Andi on the otherhand is a local and didn't travel many many miles to the event. Think about it why would Gimp decline a Division to two ladies who traveled 1000+ miles to get to the event and who came with the expectations of winning $$$ not prizes since they are both sponsored?

Gimp has always said that all divisions will be offered with more than 4 people right? So what is the big deal that he didn't offer this one person division especially an age protected division? Ok what would he do if 1 MPM signed up? He would make them move up or play AM(if they could)

so why was there a 2 person division? nothing against anybody in houston but we need to treat all players with the same R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Let me make sure I am getting this straight:
She was offered a one-woman division, so she would've been playing in the FPM division had she opted to compete.
She was assured a cash payout commensurate with a 1-person division.
She was going to be mixed into the MA2 division by score if she played, but she was not going to be competing in the MA2 division. She was going to be a one-woman FPM division.
If these are all correct, I don't see what the problem is. Her rating matches up well with the MA2 division and she could have competed against similarly skilled golfers all weekend while being guarranteed a 1st-place finish in FPM and a cash payout. She also had the option to step up to FPO and expand that division size to 3 while being guarrenteed to play on the card with the other FPO players. She chose to do neither.
What is the problem here? Everything sounds extgremely kosher, including the player in question's decision to not play.

Well they weren't in an age protected division. Gimp did thids once when there were 3 pros. So would it be cool to not let three touring pros play if there were the only ones to show and couldn't play in another DIV?

First of all, great tournament Gimp and staff. Very well run, lots of water on the courses, tons of merch to be had. The fly mart was cool and I hope it's an idea that takes off. I got some great stuff! The courses were in great shape with fairways mowed and greens defined. I probably would have moved some of the tee boxes out of the ditches, but I'm partial to concrete :) A+, first class guys and gals!
As to Nelle's question, she makes a good point. Andi's a Pro Master and was asked to play with Int Men? Des and Courtney are pro and played with MPM's the first round? Well Judah by accident since he signed up wrong. Andi's been a rock for Houston for years, I'm sad she decided not to play.

It seems that it would depend on who it was in Houston, if it was Brad Hammock, I bet he could play wherever he wanted. If it was Joe Schmo, I think he would be stuck with the recs.
I am only asking why this happened. If it happened to Andi, it could happen to any of us. You should think about it to Matt, because it could happen to you as well.
Everybody matters in disc golf, no matter what the rating, age or sex. Thats why there are rules in place to protect the player and the TD. The rules should apply to everyone, no matter where you live or your rating or your accomplishments.

Your right the rules should be the same and until now Andi was given an exemption but it didn't happen this time so tough. In his events he usually has two or three granmasters that must play masters so why shouldn't she have to play FPO? Also Neal Dambra has had to play MPO in the past few events(besides states) because of the low turnout so it seems fair that she should deal with these inconvieniences too.

Danielle - it happens in the Men's divisions all of the time...not enough MPMs so the ones there are asked if they want to play MPO or withdraw. This isn't all that unusual. I know that at a recent sanctioned event I had to make a choice about moving up to MPM versus moving down to MA3. I opted to move up that time.
It was stated to me that Andi said that she would not compete against Des. That was her choice. She was offered a fair and equitable compromise. She opted out of that.
If you decide to offer someone a 1-person division (for the 5th year in a row), that seems like it is a very generous thing for a TD to do and deserves acknowledgement. For that player to then be "picky" about where they get grouped with seems a little on the ungrateful side.
Andi is somewhat used to having to play in divisions where there are an odd amount of people and it fits in well with card assignments. This was the case here and it seems sensible to group her with comparable skill level players. It simply makes sense all of the way around. That is one of the reasons why she won't compete in a field with Des...she's not in the same skill level.
Please don't berate the TD and staff or criticize their generous attempt to accomodate this one player. Every attempt is made to ensure that all players have one of the best tournament experiences possible at Texas States. The rationale behind the grouping is solid and certainly in keeping with the affected player's own philosophy about why she won't compete in the FPO division against any of the touring women.
So you see Danielle? It's all up-front, it all makes logical sense and the player was accomodated with her request to withdraw and given a full refund.

If she wanted to play with them she should've played in the upper division. Would Gimp let a guy in a 1 person MA1 div play on the MPO card?

Nice Tournament Gimp. I played the absolute worst disc golf I could. I want Andi Lehman to know that I enjoyed her company on the second round on the Wilmont she was a lady and Don and Doug were true gentleman. I'm sorry they had to observe such a train wreck of a round. I also hope that some other players will observe the scores I had and had the fortitude to finish on Sunday(DNF is silly). Which was by far the most fun of the three rounds Thanks Jeff and Brannon. Nice rounds G. Bring it back to Ingleside.
Thanks too to Jay Tee V town and Kevin "the Longhorn" Willis. Thanks Rick (FlyingHigh) for the space.

Oct 25 2005, 01:21 PM
Yes Andi cares, and I actually spoke to her for the first time about it this morning.
The reason I am voicing it is because I am a female disc golfer. We have to deal with one person divisions all the time and I wanted to know why she would have been put with the ams. I also wanted to know why a female pro player opted out of a tournament in her hometown. Everyone knows that we need more women playing, I knew something must have really discouraged her.
I asked a simple question and realized when no one wanted to answer, there was more to it. This could have happened to any of us so I wanted some rules clarification in case it happened in the future.
When the explaination came it was clear the PDGA rules were not followed.

sounds like a tricky situation for all involved. but it sounds like both the TD and the player were completely within their rights to make the decisions they made. i really dont understand the controversy, especially since she was offered the 1 person division with a guaranteed payout. is the real issue that she wanted to play on the same card as Des?
i wasnt trying to start anything before but here's one that i know will get noticed: it is just plain downright SILLY to payout small (1-3) person divisions, especially divisions protected by gender or age, at more than 100%. one of the most asinine things i see at tourneys is a pro womens field with two players who are rated like 800 or something get paid out at 125%. maybe not related to the current topic, but i just felt like ranting

Bottom line Texas States did not follow PDGA rules on grouping and classification when it came to Andi Lehman playing.
Not true. The very first paragraph in Grouping and Sectioning, 804.06, state that Pros and Ams be segregated as much as "practicable." Practicable allows the TD leeway in creating groups especially when (s)he has already made an exception to allow a division of fewer than 4 players.
The other important note is that the whole section 804 in the rulebook is superseded by the published Tour Guidelines as applicable. Section 804 is not part of our core rules of the game itself, just like the PGA in ball golf has special tournament rules and qualifications that go beyond the core Rules of Golf published by the USGA. Now that pros can play in am divisions, we use ratings to establish divisions and we have ratings events like the Mid-Nationals, not only do players have more flexibility, but so do TDs. It's impractical and expensive to update the rulebook and distribute it every year. So it's up to the players and TDs to pay attention to the Tour Guidelines published each year to understand any revisions or updates to how 804 rules might be handled that year.
Regardless, in this situation, 804 as written was followed along with application of some of the newer grouping options that were part of the 2005 Tour Guidelines. Andi has been around a long time and is used to the older policy which typically grouped all women together regardless of skill level which was done before ratings, divisions based on ratings and pros being allowed to play am. But things have changed, hopefully for the better for all of those players who used to have to play in one person divisions who now have the option to compete with those of similar skill in larger divisions.

Thanks Chuck, its almost clear now.
The part I dont understand is why she was going to be put with the ams when the other two person division was not.
