Its McC-Note Time

The 28th Waterloo Disc Golf Classic in Memory of David Tayloe - is rapidly approaching. As usual, the tournament will be on the third weekend in October (Oct. 15-16, 2005). Time is running out for you to reserve your spot in this incredibly popular tournament. Twenty-four people have already taken the McC-Note Challenge to guarantee their place. Dont wait too long and risk missing out. Last year when the tournament was opened up for general registration, the remaining spots were claimed within 10 days.

The way the McC-Note Challenge works is this: Send the Waterloo Club a check for $100 now. Your spot in the tournament is then guaranteed. When fees for the different divisions are set, we will deduct the following from your $100: your entry, ace pot, ring-of-fire, and mulligan fees. All the money left goes directly to the charity. In 2004, there were 51 McC-Note Challengers (over half the field). This added nearly $2000 to the total charitable donation!

To clarify something that has come up occasionally: this money saves your spot, not a spot. Once the tournament fills up and there is a waitlist, if you have to cancel you cant just give your spot to someone else. As with any cancellation, the spot goes to the next person on the waitlist. And believe me, as the tournament gets close, the people on the waitlist eagerly await any and every cancellation. If you do have to cancel, you will receive a refund of everything except what would have gone to the charity (and that money will still be added to the donation).

Flyers for 2005 (and thus open registration) probably wont be out until sometime in August or September, so dont wait send in your McC-Note now (mail to WDGC, PO Box 33531, Austin, TX, 78764 - payable to WDGC). See you at Waterloooooo!

will mulligans be used once again this year????

gordonmk
Aug 18 2005, 10:54 AM
Yep, we'll have mulligans again this year. $1 per mulligan ticket, you can use only 1 per round, drive only, must take the 2nd shot even if you like it less

Or maybe you'll make it the ultimate mulligan use by doing what AK did a couple of years ago: turn an OB shot into an ace. :D

The Jack Camp?! Isn't he the Advanced GRAND Master that shots open scores?!? :o
I am eligable to play that division this year but don't know if I am good enough to compete. :p I think Harry said it is mandatory to wear some type of brace to play that division. I gotta get me a new ulta lite back brace. :o:D:oJP
Waterloooo!!!!!

Aug 19 2005, 11:18 AM
One and the same Jack Camp, although I'm not sure what division he is playing this year. Maybe pro grand master (ha can take on Dale Hemmeline)? Maybe regular advanced master?

We just got 2 more McC-Noters last night at the Zilker Mini:

Dale Hemmeline
Ron Sharpe

We are now more than 1/3 full, so don't delay getting those McC-Note entries in. ;)

We'll be doing a number of things to honor David Tayloe at this year's Waterloo tournament. Starting with the name:

28th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic In Memory Of David Tayloe

A more permanent change will be the new mcc-note name:

<font color="blue"> Father Dave McC-Note Challenge </font>

plus the addition of a Tayloe Toe Throwing Contest on Sunday after lunch.

More news on other Tayloe things later.

(We'll miss you Dave, but we'll never forget you. :D)

Less than 2 months away from Waterloo now, and we really need to make a big push to get sponsorship. We have to raise $750 cash just to cover the park rental fee. The only good part about that is the Parks Dept. "sponsors" the tournament by letting us pay that money to the Ronald McDonald House (instead of to the city).

All the info is below. If you can sponsor us, please let us know, we would really appreciate it. What we also need is for people to take sponsor letters around to local businesses and ask for support. If you can do this, please email me at [email protected] and I'll send you a copy of the letter, all nicely formatted (or some even nicer sponsor brochures that we might make up).

Cash sponsorship always rules! But we need lots of merchandise sponsorship too, so that we have plenty to put in our raffle, silent auction, ring-of-fire, CTPs, player's packages, random give-aways, etc.

Thanks!!! :)

Dear Sponsor,

The Waterloo Disc Golf Club is proud to announce that it is hosting the 28th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic In Memory Of David Tayloe at Waterloo Park in Austin, Texas. This historic disc golf tournament is the longest running tournament in the Southwestern U.S. and one of the oldest in the country. The dates are set for October 14-16, 2005, and this years event will again benefit the Austin Ronald McDonald House (RMH). This years tournament also will be dedicated to the memory of David Tayloe, a longstanding supporter of RMH, the sport of disc golf, the club, and especially this tournament. Davids first Waterloo tournament was the 4th Annual, back in 1981, and he didnt miss very many of them. He passed away August 1st, 2005, and he will be sorely missed by all of us in his disc golf family.

The RMH is a wonderful non-profit, charitable organization that provides a home away from home for families with critically ill children undergoing treatment at area hospitals. The RMH in Austin houses thirteen families at a time, and depends on contributions to take care of these families. This allows parents the chance to be very close to their children when they are needed most. RMH is located on the edge of the park, the course winds all around it, and it provides a very special kind of service. This charity is a perfect fit for the tournament.

Thanks in part to our great sponsors, we have donated more than $33,000 in cash and supplies to RMH and Austin Parks Foundation over the last seven years. The goal for 2005 is to raise $10,000. Wont you please help by being a sponsor of this wonderful tournament? Sponsorship can be in the form of cash, merchandise, or a combination of the two. The different levels are:

For a sponsorship of $200 or more : your logo or name on the back of the official tournament shirt, on the club web site, plus on a tee-box sign. This sign will be seen by all of the competitors each time that they play the course. Your name will also be added to the Sponsor List that will be displayed at the course and distributed to the players, the general public, and the media.
For a sponsorship of $100 - $199 : your name on a tee-box sign, web site, and Sponsor List.
For a sponsorship of up to $99 : your name on the web site and Sponsor List.
For more information, please contact Gordon Maxim-Kelley at (512) 858-0119 ([email protected]) or W. Ray Murray, Jr. at (972) 398-8140 ([email protected]). Please send all sponsorship to Waterloo Disc Golf Club, PO Box 33531 Austin, TX, 78764 (checks payable to Waterloo Disc Golf Club). If you wish, you can make your check payable directly to Austin Ronald McDonald House in order to get the tax benefits of a charitable donation. Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Gordon Maxim-Kelley

Susan: there isn't really an official cut off date for being a Father Dave McC-Note Challenger. Usually, even after we put out the flyer several more people sign up as challengers (even though the main benefit of saving a spot is gone).

But the "saving a spot" benefit ends when the flyer is released - probably late this month or in early Sept - so everyone should get their c-notes in right away. Don't risk missing out on this year's tournament.

Waterloo Registration is Open!

The tournament flyer is below. You can also download it from the clubs website: www.austindiscgolf.org (http://www.austindiscgolf.org), or email me at [email protected] and ask for an email copy.

If you are in Austin, you can also pick them up from Moodys trailer at Pease, or Armandos setup at Searight (they will get them tonight or tomorrow).

To register, you need to mail in your form (the part with the division info, money info, and waiver) along with your check or money order. Postmark will determine the date of entry. Please sign & date the waiver at the bottom, it will speed up checking everyone in that weekend.

The only way to register in person is at our weekly Thursday minis at Zilker, or at the Ace Race on Saturday Sep. 10th at Pease (if spaces are still available at that point).

Sorry, but the tournament is not up on titledisc and we cant accept credit cards or paypal.

Once the tournament is full, we will start a waitlist. If someone withdraws, we will contact the next person on the waitlist.

See you soon at Waterlooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Looks like there's another football game scheduled that same weekend (Colorado @ UT)...maybe next year I'll get to play (I love disc golf, but I love college football more).

Cool thing is that our tailgate spot is right next to the tennis courts on Red River...so I can watch some of my friends throw a couple of holes.

gordonmk
Sep 02 2005, 11:20 AM
The touranment will fill up very quickly, and it is capped at 90 players, regardless of divisions. My best advice if you are thinking about playing it is: sign up immediately, and then later if you have to cancel, do so and we'll refund all but the part of your entry that goes to the fundraising. That will then make someone on the waitlist very happy. :D

gordonmk
Sep 02 2005, 11:25 AM
Josh: you need to get rid of that brother. He's causing you nothing but heartache & grief! And all for his selfish reasons of wanting to be happy, sheesh :D

Sorry you won't be able to play, but if the wedding is in town and you have some free time at other parts of the weekend, we'd love to have your help staffing. This tournament takes a lot of people to do really well, especially out on the course keeping things flowing.

Rooster: maybe next year we'll luck out and it will be an "away" game on our weekend. In the meantime, we'll all say hi as we go by your tent. And maybe you can help us keep the other tailgaters on the west side of the sidewalk that cuts through that area. :D

We'll probably adjust the course on saturday the same way we did last year, so if between the sidewalk and the creek is clear of tents and partyers, we should be fine.

Hook 'Em!!!! :D

Oh... a couple of corrections:

1) Roger Allen is actually an Assistant TD, not Ray Murray. It is my fault, I had Roger playing and Ray staffing, but it is going to be the other way around. Sorry Ray & Roger! :o

Roger's contact info is [email protected], (512) 899-2063

2) I didn't realize that Armando was not selling stuff out at Searight anymore. We did tack some extra entry forms up on the bulletin board, but I don't know how long those will last and he won't be there to hand out more.
-----------------------------------

Shannon Fosdick's McC-Note has been received! Thanks Shannon :D

C'mon Ladies, please sign up quickly!

There are already 10 women who either have entered or have said that their entries on the way.

Waterloo is always a very women friendly event. You will receive extra stuff in your players package, there is a CTP each round for women only, and there will be extra payout added to your awards.

-----------------------------

Also, another correction to the original flyer - it is the <font color="red"> Tayloe Toe Throw </font> contest on Sunday after lunch (not tow throwing - whatever the heck that is :o)

Sep 06 2005, 02:30 PM
gordo, I sent my entry in last Friday.

Sep 06 2005, 02:50 PM
I left my entry for Lou at Moody's trailer durring the Pease mini Saturday. I did McCnote + $5 non-current pdga fee, hence the odd amount.

gordonmk
Sep 06 2005, 08:30 PM
I haven't heard anything from Lou yet Joel, but I'll ask him. As a general rule, that is a pretty risky way to try and enter this tournament. It isn't like COTO where there are plenty of spots and it is just a matter of eventually getting us the info. They are handing the flyers out down there as a favor to us and as a service to the players, but that is not a place to register for the tournament.

By the time Lou gets the registration on Saturday, the tournament might already be full. Waterloo fills up so fast, that without a postmark, or without receiving it directly at one of our events (like a mini or the ace race), it can easily be missed or not received in time.

To be safer, you might want to go ahead and put a check in the mail tonight or tomorrow, that way it has tomorrow's date on it instead of sat.the 10th.

Thanks,
Gordon

gordonmk
Sep 06 2005, 10:10 PM
Sorry Joel, I just re-read what I wrote and I didn't mean to sound so harsh :o

It is just that if everyone starts trying to give their entries to Moody, Suida, Mitch, Lou, Rob, Dan, etc instead of mailing them in, it can get very difficult to keep up with who sent what and when.

The last thing I want to have to do is tell someone who thinks they've gotten their entry in on time that they are actually on the waitlist.

I also don't want to make these guys trapped in the middle between having to collect entries, get them documented and turned in, and then maybe catching hell if they don't get them turned in and the players find themselves not in the tournament.

If you were aware that leaving it for Lou meant that it wouldn't get to him until the 10th and that is when it would be considered "received", then everything is cool. However, if you were expecting it to be considered paid last Saturday, then the best thing to do to is to go ahead and re-enter tomorrow (and then we'll refund you back what you left with Moody).

We're really just trying to keep it fair and give everyone the same chance, whether in town or not, down at the courses a lot or not, to play Waterloo.

Thanks for understanding man :),
Gordon

Sep 07 2005, 12:11 AM
I hear you Gordo. No worries, okay?

I was told Lou was on the course, and the entry would get to him after the round, which it did, because he called me and left a message that I overpaid. I guess he didn't see that I wasn't current on my PDGA membership. I tried to return his call but haven't been able to get a hold of him. I might have the wrong number.

I made an incorrect assumption that the word would get to you and I would get on the list.

It is all my bad, but I hope it gets to you in time to make the show. I used every last bit of influence I have at home and at work to weasel out of my responsibilities for the weekend.

A word to all who might make the same mistake, mail them early and avoid the wrath of Gordon. :D

Thanks Lou & Joel.

We lost one Father Dave McC-Note Challenger, but we gained 6 more. Mark Penniman signed up at last year's tournament, but it turns out he is travelling and won't be back in time. The six new ones are:

Richard McCaine
Robert Schroeder, Sr.
Robbie Schroeder
Daniel Schroeder
John Godfrey
Dave Moody

This gives us a total of 40 who are playing and 2 who cancelled. Plus I know of a few more out there that are on the way. We may yet hit 50 :D

Entries are coming in fast! If you think you might want to play, go ahead and mail in your registration form and entry fee. We use postmarks to determine date of entry, so it is better to mail it today than wait and try and register in person.

It is very low risk to enter. If you don't make it in on time, we won't cash your check and we'll put you on the waitlist. If you do make it in and then have to cancel later, you'll receive close to a full refund. We'll only keep the part that goes to the fundraising (and we'll still put that towards fundraising, not just keep it for ourselves :D)

Don't delay, or you might miss out on a great tournament.

We are only one month away from the 28th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic In Memory of David Tayloe at Waterloo Park in Austin, Texas, October 14-16, 2005. Many of you knew David and remember what a great person he was. Waterloo was one of his absolute favorite tournaments, and this year we will be doing a lot to honor and remember his spirit, including the inaugural Tayloe Toe Toss, a chance for all of us to look ridiculous trying to throw a Frisbee with our feet. Im sure that David will be looking down on us and laughing his head off. Also, hopefully everyone will wear tie dye on Sunday. I bet that a lot of the players and staff have tie dyed clothes that Dave himself did.

We really need your help making this a great tournament, so we are putting out a call for sponsorship. Also, we need people to try and round up sponsorship from local businesses / golfers. Just to start with, we have a $750 park rental fee. For those who dont know, Waterloo Park is one of the few parks that the City of Austin rents out for various concerts and events. We only have this one time per year that we can rent the park and set up a temporary disc golf course. We also have great players packages and trophies (and we hate to take money out of entry fees to cover those). Plus lots of other expenses like a free lunch for players on Sunday, plus food and drink all weekend for the large staff that it takes to coordinate all this.

Over the past seven years, we have raised over $33,000 from the annual Waterloo tournament. Most of it went directly to the charity: Austin Ronald McDonald House (other money went to Austin Parks Foundation and course improvements here in Austin). Our goal this year is to raise over $10,000. Dave was always a big supporter of this tournament, the Ronald McDonald House, and disc golf in general.

If you would like to sponsor with cash, or if you are approaching others for cash, you (they) can make the check payable directly to the Austin Ronald McDonald House, that way you can gain the taxable benefit of a charitable donation, while supporting the tournament at the same time.

We also need lots of merchandise sponsorship. We have a huge raffle and silent auction each year, and these both raise a lot of money, so we need lots of cool stuff to put in them. We also need items for CTPs (we usually have 12, including 4 just for the women, and we try to make each one worth at least $40 - $50), the Ring-of-Fire, and of course the Tayloe Toe Toss.

Goodies for the players packages are always very welcome too. We will need items for about 110 people.

Our official request letter is below, and is also available as an attached file that I can email to you so you can take it around. If you are able to help go out and ask for sponsorship, please contact me because we also have some excellent sponsorship request brochures that look really sharp! We can send you these to help in the search.

<font color="red"> One deadline to be aware of</font> : in order to get a sponsor on the back of the tournament shirt, well need their commitment (along with their logo or how they want their name to appear) by the end of <font color="red"> Wednesday September 28th </font> .

We can get them in the program if we have the info by Monday October 10th.

We can make tee signs and get them on the web site up until the last minute.

The Waterloo Disc Golf Club sponsors lots of events each year here in Texas, but this is the time of year when we really need to ask you for your support. This is a great tournament, for a great cause, and in memory of a wonderful, generous person Father Dave.

Thank you for your help, and please dont hesitate to contact us.

For a sponsorship of $200 or more: your logo or name on the back of the official tournament shirt, on the club web site, plus on a tee-box sign. This sign will be seen by all of the competitors each time that they play the course. Your name will also be added to the Sponsor List that will be displayed at the course and distributed to the players, the general public, and the media.

For a sponsorship of $100 - $199: your name on a tee-box sign, web site, and Sponsor List.

For a sponsorship of up to $99: your name on the web site and Sponsor List.

For more information, please contact Gordon Maxim-Kelley at (512) 858-0119 ([email protected]) or W. Ray Murray, Jr. at (972) 398-8140 ([email protected]). Please send all sponsorship to Waterloo Disc Golf Club, PO Box 33531 Austin, TX, 78764 (checks payable to WDGC). If you wish, you can make your check payable directly to Austin Ronald McDonald House in order to get the tax benefits of a charitable donation. Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Gordon Maxim-Kelley

Sep 17 2005, 08:16 PM
With what has already arrived, Waterloo is definitely full. If you have already sent your entry, just be patient and I'll let you know as soon as I can whether you are in or on the waitlist.

If you haven't sent it yet, then hang onto it and just let me know that you want to be on the waitlist. The best ways are to send me a PM, send me an email at [email protected] or call me at home (512) 858-0119 (even in Austin you usually need the area code as I live in Dripping Springs and most phone companies consider that "long distance" - sheesh )

I just need your name and phone number. It can help to know your division (for when we make up scorecards), but that won't affect whether or not you get in. We don't have set numbers of people in a division, so... for example: it won't help to be willing to play pro when you normally play advanced. If there is a spot for you, we'll get you in regardless of your division.

If you clear the waitlist before the tournament gets here, I'll contact you about it. Otherwise, the only thing you have to do is be there Saturday morning at tourney HQ when check-in closes. If anyone drops out at the last minute or hasn't checked in, we'll drop them and fill their spot with someone from the waitlist.

If you are on the waitlist, don't despair. Even if you are far down on the list, there is always hope. At least twice in the last few years, everyone on the list who chose to show up Saturday morning actually made it in.

Thanks!

Waterlooooooooooooooo

Wow, less than 2 weeks to Waterloo!

The Zilker course is back in following the ACL fest, and it is now on the south side of the park road. For some reason, the city painted the baskets bright yellow. ???

The clubs weekly minis at Zilker are starting back up, the next one will be this Thursday, October 6th, same times (sign up starts at 5 pm, tee off at 5:30). There will be a club meeting following the mini, see below for more info.

Since the ace pot is starting back over, we have decided to add a little spice to it for this mini. If there is an ace, in addition to winning the $2 per person ace pot, the winner will also receive one of our very limited 28th Waterloo full color trophy discs, featuring a great photo of Father Dave. If there is more than one ace, the money will be split and there will be a CTP for the disc. The south side has lots of holes that can be aced, so come on out for a fun mini.

28th Waterloo CFR discs and minis will be available for sale, see last email item for more info.

------------------------------------------------------

This is very short notice, but the club will be holding a General Club Meeting this Thursday (Oct 6th) right after the Zilker mini. We will meet at the Polo Picnic Table area (where we set up for Ice Bowl each year; by the parking lot for the north side of the course), starting about 7:30 7:45 pm, depending on when the mini ends.

We will be focusing mainly on Waterloo, but also talking about the ongoing work at Manor and Searight, work days at Circle C and Zilker later this fall/winter, and maybe preparing the latest newsletter. Everyone is welcome to attend.

28th Waterloo CFR discs and minis will be available for sale, see last email item for more info (special price for people who attend the meeting).

-------------------------------------------------------

The 28th Waterloo Candy Fundraising Discs and Minis from Innova have arrived! They are the full <font color="red"> INNcolor glow orcs </font> and <font color="green"> INNcolor minis </font> , both featuring a great photo of Father Dave from the 2000 Waterloo tournament. The prices on these are higher than usual for fundraiser discs around here, but the extra proceeds will all go towards the fundraising. Dave was a big supporter of the Austin Ronald McDonald House, and if we sell all of these fundraisers, well be able to significantly increase this years donation.

Prices are:

$40 INNcolor Glow Orc
$10 INNcolor Mini

We think that these will be very popular this year, and we want to be able to get them to everyone who wants them, so we are limiting purchases for now to 1 disc and 1 mini per person.

These will be available for purchase at the Thursday mini.

They will also be available at the Thursday meeting AND if you come to the meeting, you can get $5 off the disc&mini price ($45 for the combo - disc & mini - instead of $50).

Here is a link to the clubs website where you can see a picture of the disc (although it looks a lot better in person than in that photo brighter, more green; especially on the minis). Well try to get a better picture of the disc up soon. http://www.austindiscgolf.org

Chris,

I can bring my DisCatcher that we've used many times at Waterloo. Another Sponsor: Waterloo Records :D

There is still time to be a sponsor of Waterloo and to get your name/logo on a tee sign, in the tournament program, and on the website. Cash is always wonderful (can be made payable to Austin Ronald McDonald House in order to get the charitable donation tax benefit). But we also need more items for the raffle, silent auction, CTPs, Ring-of-Fire, and the Tayloe Toe Throw.

$100 gets you listed all three places - and it can be cash, merchandise, gift certificates, or a combination. Lesser amounts still gets you on the program (if we get your committment before next Tuesday afternoon) and on the website.

For a full list of our sponsor names/logos, check out the sponsor page on the club's website: http://www.austindiscgolf.org/Classic%202005.htm

Please be sure to patronize and/or thank these businesses, clubs, and individuals who are doing so much to support a wonderful tournament.

Thanks! :)

Doubles:

Friday October 14th, flex start 1 pm 4:30/5:00 -ish. Open to everyone, $10 per person, bring your own partner. We will have to stop accepting teams around 4:30 5 pm, so that everyone who starts will be able to finish before dark. Results will be posted as soon as possible on Saturday. Awards for doubles will be ready by lunch on Sunday the 16th. Leave contact info when signing up if you wont be around on Sunday. Last year, we pushed over 60 teams through on Friday, so the course plays fairly quickly. Show up early for the best chance to play, dont wait until late in the afternoon and take a chance on being turned away. Cards will be limited to 2 teams to keep things flowing smoothly.

Gordo, is the course open for practice (non-doubles) on friday?

gordonmk
Oct 06 2005, 07:21 PM
Not really. We'll have too many doubles teams going through to accomodate casual players too. If people really want to play the course, they need to play doubles.

However, the last doubles teams will start about 4:30 - 5:00, and after that (as they make their way through the course) it will be open behind them. At least until the people who brought those baskets start taking them down :D

Also, it will be open during the lunch break each day. Saturday could be tough because of the game crowd, but Sunday should be wide open. We'll only have our Juniors (if we have any) out playing their official rounds at lunch.

Tournament Check-In and Waitlist:

Waterloo Park is located in downtown Austin. It is bordered by E.15th, Red River, E.12th, and Trinity. Tournament HQ is on the wooden deck near Trinity & E.13th.

This is <font color="red"> VERY IMPORTANT </font> ! Everyone registered for the main tournament must check-in either Friday October 14th between 1 pm and dark, or Saturday morning October 15th between 7:30 am 8:30 am. Anyone not checked in by 8:30 am on Saturday will be dropped from the tournament and the spot will be filled by someone on the waitlist. The tournament is too popular, too fun, and has too big a waitlist to let a spot go unclaimed. If you are on the waitlist, you must be at tourney HQ at 8:30 am. If your name is called and you arent there, we go to the next person on the list.

Please try to check in on Friday, as it will make Saturday morning go much more smoothly if we dont have as many people to run through the process.

Everyone playing the main tournament will receive a players package.

MULLIGANS FOR CHARITY

This is a great, fun idea that we have borrowed from the Octoberfriz. Here is how it works: before the tournament or before any of the rounds, you may purchase mulligans for $1 each (you may not purchase them during a round). You will receive one ticket for each mulligan purchased. Take these tickets with you on the rounds. You may buy as many as you want (sorry, tournament players only), but you can only use 1 mulligan per round. Mulligans can only be used on drives, not on upshots or putts. When you want to use your mulligan, you must declare it to the whole group immediately after your drive. You then take out one of your tickets, tear it in half, and re-drive before anyone else in the group drives (be sure to keep the half of the ticket that has the number on it we will give away some prizes later). You must take this second shot no matter what, even if it is worse than the first. When scores are marked for that hole, the scorekeeper needs to put an M in the upper corner of the box. At the end of the tournament, one ticket from all the mulligans sold will be drawn to receive a Full Size Ching Skill Shot Basket. A few others tickets will be drawn to receive some smaller prizes. Be sure to save your used, and possibly unused, tickets in case your number is drawn. Do not turn your tickets in with the scores.

Here's a picture of one of the fundraiser Glo Orcs. They're even sweeter in person.
