Gordon, the Waterloo Great Grand Wazoo, can you reiterate the parking on Friday and the weekend. Are we gonna have to pay to park Sat.? What time is the Horns game?
Waterlooo!!!! :cool:JP

Oct 11 2005, 12:02 PM
The Horns vs Colorado game is at 2:30. Which means that the tailgaters will have taken up all available parking around the park by 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. You're best bet is going to be to pay to park in one of the nearby Parking Garages (or park your car near the park the night before and have someone drive you to the course in the morning and drop you off)

Much great waterloo tournament info can be found at the club's website on the tournament page. The link is: http://www.austindiscgolf.org/Classic%202005.htm

Info includes parking, directions, check-in, doubles, full schedule for the weekend (well it will later today), fundraising stuff, CFRs, etc.

Oct 11 2005, 12:24 PM
And here is the Schedule that I just sent to Wade for posting on the website:

SCHEDULE

FRIDAY 10/14/05

1:00 pm Dark: Mandatory Player Check-In For Singles
1:00 pm 4:30/5:00 pm: Friday Doubles: Flex Tee-Off, $10 per person (bring your own partner)
(how late we tee off the last group depends on how fast the rounds are going)
Following Doubles: Tayloe Players Party at Schulzs Beer Garden (E.17th & San Jacinto)

SATURDAY 10/15/05

7:30 am 8:30 am: Final Chance For Player Check-In For Singles
8:30 am: Fill No-Show Spots From Waitlist
9:00 am: Players Meeting
10:00 am: Tee-Off 1st Round
Lunch Break: 1 - 2 hours (food available for sale)
Immediately following
Lunch : Ring-of-Fire
TBA: Tee-Off 2nd Round (right after Ring-of-Fire)

There is a U.T. football game that starts at 2:30 pm this afternoon and will probably end around 5:30 pm. The crowds walking through the course before and after the game are inevitable and may cause delays in play. The course will be slightly altered on Saturday only, and we will work around this problem as best we can. Your patience is greatly appreciated!

SUNDAY 10/16/05

9:00 am: Tee-Off 3rd Round
Lunch Break: 1 hours, Free Lunch for all players & staff, served in courtyard of RMH (donations to the charity gratefully accepted)
Immediately following
Lunch : Inaugural Tayloe Toe Throw
TBA: Tee-Off 4th Round (right after the Tayloe Toe Throw)
TBA: Awards

A Closest-To-the-Pin contest will be held immediately following the 4th Round. If there have been no aces during the tournament, it will be for the unclaimed Ace Pot. If there have been one or more aces, then the CTP contest will be for prizes.

Awards Ceremony will be on the deck as soon as we have the final results.

Anyone need a doubles partner to play open friday afternoon?

J A B
Oct 11 2005, 06:54 PM
According to my P.M. from Ware, I will be responsible for placing and picking up my basket each day, and moving it between rounds (hole#1 medium and long on Sunday).

Not a problem, Hole #1 will have it's basket at 9:00am Friday. My question is: Will all doubles teams start at hole #1?

My wife has plans for me to take her out to dinner Friday as I will be golfing the rest of the weekend. Will I be able to pick up basket #1 by 6:00pm Friday? I wouldn't want to pull the basket before everyone had a chance to play out. But, I also do not want to sleep in the garage all weekend either. :o

gordonmk
Oct 11 2005, 07:01 PM
Yes Allen, all teams will start on #1, so you can pick your basket up by 6pm. I believe your options (for storage of the basket until saturday) after that are: lock it up under the deck in the storage area, give it to Chris for him to take away on the trailer, or take it home yourself and bring it back in the morning.

Thanks for the volunteer effort!!!

gordonmk

Sorry, but I'm a firm believer in the 2 meter rule (although I have no intention of getting into the big debate here).

Also, I can think of only one hole on the course, #3 off the deck, that really forces people to throw mainly into the canopy.

I'm sorry Pat that you didn't realize there were mulligans. We've been doing them for so many years that I thought everyone pretty much knew about them by now (plus the option to purchase them was on the registration form :D).

If you did want to withdraw (and I know you have said you don't), you would still get most of your money back - all except the $4 that goes to the fundraising - so it would be a painless withdrawal.

But I'm glad you are still going to come down and play. It is a great tournament and I think you'll really enjoy it.

And as Ray said...

Waterloooooooooooooooo :)

all basket volunteers come find me and I will have a tag for you to hang on your basket that has "Hole # , your name, what pin placement the basket needs to be in for each round". Except Friday all holes are in the short (boo) :Dpositions. than follow the hole placement on the card hanging on your basket. thanks again. we will most likely lock all baskets under the deck both nights. that way I can start placing them out early. we might have a trailer to help pick them up and get them back to the deck each day.

thank you all very much for the help and support of your baskets. Like Gordon said this tourney would not be possible without BASKETS...

did some course grooming last night. the creek is flowing and the city has cut and trimmed the bulk of the growth along the banks encouraging discs that may have been hung up in weeds to take a swim. mt waterloo is pretty overgrown (was) and has a bit of a utility work hole near the box but should be playable.
all and all the park looks better than it has in a long time and should play very well.

Saturday is going to be rough on parking and leaving for lunch will be just asking to park far away from the course when you get back (because of the UT game).

However, we've got you covered! :D

We'll have a fajita plate lunch for sale that day, so you don't have to worry about going anywhere. Doc will be grilling up a bunch of tasty fajita meat so plan on sticking around.

And on Sunday, we'll have our usual FREE LUNCH for players - burgers and hot dogs over in the courtyard of the Ronald McDonald House.

We will have a tip jar out, collecting donations for the charity. There is no suggested donation, we just ask that you give what you can, if you can.

We also will have a big box at Tournament HQ all weekend to collect donations of canned, boxed, or packaged foods, household items and every-day necessities such as toiletries, etc.

Just a quick note on the doubles (and I'll have much more to post later) :D

I did find that missing doubles scorecard last night. Some of the scoring problems - that then led to payout problems came because....

Our staff person did add up the score semi-incorrectly (he/she put down 13, which was correct, but then also wrote 49, which was not correct. (13 under somehow equaling 49 ).

HOWEVER, that person shouldn't have had to put a score down at all. The players should have done that. Instead it appears that the players just wrote in their 2s and 3s and then turned it in without a total number written. Shame On You!

We'll work on a few things to try and make doubles go a little better next year. :D

I'd be happy for them to count. All everyone has to do is convince the pdga that one little mulligan per round doesn't really affect things that much. :D

since virtually everyone had the mullies available to them, it seems a defensible argument that everyone played under the same conditions and on the same course.

the mulligans are a mental aspect of the round, equivalent to some of the contrived OBs and "clowns mouth" mandos that are accepted without a second thought at other sanctioned events.

i believe the argument for counting the rounds is at least equal in validity to the argument against.

Oct 19 2005, 06:06 PM
The Toe Throw Competition was quite entertaing and I'm sure Tayloe was looking down at us and laughing. I'm guessing that close to 30 people competed. The longest throw was 76'8" by Ryan (the staff guy who's last name I always forget).
The shortest throw about negative 10 feet. All the competitors had to wear tye-dyed, pointed birthday party hats while throwing.

and the first round was mixed divsions, thereby violating the sanctioning agreement anywayz! :D

Wow, way to make me look up some rules there Sandalman :D

However, I don't think the mixed divisions during the first round really is breaking the sancioning agreement. There doesn't seem to be anything specific about it in the agreement itself, and in the rule book under Grouping & Sectioning, it says that Pros and Ams SHOULD not be grouped together. It doesn't say Shall, Must, Will, etc ("absolute" words used elsewhere in the rules), but Should (suggested - even strongly suggested).

It may be against the preferred method, but it seems to me like it is still allowed.

And just to be more picky :D even under the Should suggestion, it only says pros and ams, not each division, so it seems like you could use the preferred method and still have mixed divisions as long as the pro divsions are mixed together separately from the am divisions.

I bet someone out there could direct us towards a thread on the rules section that addresses this?

Oct 20 2005, 11:30 AM
yeah no kidding!! what is the use of pdga sanctioning if the rounds do not count?? and points are pretty much meaningless for the majority!!

There are two points: the main one is liability insurance. The city won't allow the tournament without it. The second is tradition. Park Pete in winter was rarely, if ever, sanctioned back then, but the Classic almost always was.

Now, if someone wants to do all the insurance foot-work and pony up the money to get us a fat liability policy, we could look at not sanctioning the event. It would certainly mean a lot less work for me and the club. No fees to collect, no checking active status and collecting $5 plus names and addresses, no report to fill out, no stats to submit, and on and on. I'd be curious to know if players really care if this one is sanctioned, especially if there aren't ratings coming out of it.

I think that points matter just as much (or just as little - depending on your point of view) as they ever did. Although I do agree that ratings have become very important to many players.

The whole mulligan thing was started long before ratings came about. Yes, we could raise the entry fee and donate the extra money in the mulligan's place. Heck, we could probably raise the entry a lot more and still fill up. But the mulligans are more about fun and fundraising. This isn't supposed to be a big serious tournament. It is supposed to be a very fun disc golf family gathering that does a lot of good things for the players and the charity. All about the Karma :D

I can't believe I forgot to give you your discs the whole weekend :o Guess I'll have to send them up to you after all. I'll try to do that next week.

Not complaining, but Pat is correct.

804.06.A. could be read as non binding, but the Rules Q&A is a bit more explicit.

804.06 GROUPING & SECTIONING
A. Professional and Amateur players should not be grouped together, and all players from different divisions shall be segregated from each other during play as much as practicable.

Rule Question: Mixing divisions
Question: Can a TD put players from different divisions in the same group?

Response: Only if absolutely necessary. A TD must strive to place players into groups with players from the same division insofar as is possible. That is especially true with regard to the border between pro and am divisions. Pros should play with pros, and ams should play with ams.

A TD may need to mix divisions in order to fill a group, because divisions are rarely evenly divisible by the group size. That is fine. (For example, there may be three senior grandmasters and two women masters at a tournament with groups of five; they may be placed within the same group.)

Exceptions to the grouping constraints may also be obtained by the TD by petitioning the Competition Director.

Yours Sincerely,
The PDGA Rules Committee

I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, especially for this event, just that if you are planning to do it you should include it in the waiver request used for the mulligans and advertise it on the flyers.

Oct 20 2005, 01:29 PM
Thanks for the clarification Gary. I don't think I've seen that rules Q&A before, can you please let me know where it is?

It would certainly be easier on staff not to have mixed cards that first round. But maybe not as much fun for the players? I think people like it, but it would be interesting to hear their feedback.

sandalman
Oct 20 2005, 01:39 PM
this issue has come up on lots of tourney threads before, and there are generally two primary feelings.

1. the local players like mixed divisions because they play with the same people every round pretty much, and mixed divisions allow (force) them to play with new faces.

2. the travelling and/or "competitive" players prefer to play within their division because they're playing against their competition rather than some unrelated factor.

another common complaint about mixing is some high-and-mighty person whining about having to play with the worst player in the entire field, yada yada yada... i doubt anyone at waterloo would play that card though.

another interesting note: pdga player surveys show that ratings are the single most cited reason for joining/belonging to the pdga.

yeah i know all that. i had a blast at waterloo. but that doesnt mean i cant also want the ratings to count.

absolutely!! As much as some people dislike ratings they are an essential element in the competitive structure of the pdga!! Just think where we would be without them ! Not only do they measure where each player is in respect to the rest of the players , they also are a reasonable guage for each individuals progression in cometitive play!!! Waterloo is definately a blast to participate in , I have played waterloo every year since I started competing!! However this is a pdga sanctioned event and there are many factors to consider when there is a sanctioned agreement!! LONG LIVE WATERLOO!!! :D

i love the format, one of the things that keeps me from playing more tourneys are having to play with the same 6 players over and over in adv masters. i should consider moving when there are only 5-6 people registered in the division.
mixed division cards for the first round allows you to see different faces and makes it more interesting. moody does that alot in his tourneys for the first round, have not heard complaints there.

so does states, at least they did last year. both shouldnt - they're only three rounds as it is.

I think it should be kept here since the event is already an X-tier and it is traditionally done, just that it should be officially requested and advertised.

I cannot compete to place high in my division, but I still play. I personally did not renew my PDGA fees due to all the rules, regulations, and BS. :p I understand that the PDGA is needed to promote and regulate the sport. Waterloo is and has been a fun charity event. If the politics get much worse there may not be a Waterloo tournament.
I play for fun and enjoy the mixed 1st round and the mulligans. I meet new people and enjoy the various styles of play.
Lets keep Waterloo a fun fundraiser. Thanks again Waterloo Disc Golf club in all their efforts to make this a big fun disc golf tournament. :DJP

We might have had a few problems recording doubles scores. Team Justice's score was added at the park but I forgot to record it on the spreadsheet. Here's the corrected doubles results for the Advanced division.

T14 Stephen / Roberto Gomez 47
T14 Joe Torrence / Ed Morgan 47
T14 Ed Coffey / Marcus Lujan 47

Also, we had 2 women's teams:

Adv Women: Laura Hovey & Susan Macaluso shot at 56; $18

Rec Women: Lynn Chaumont & Kristen Carlton shot a 67; $18

That makes 77 doubles teams on friday - amazing! :D

BTW, I will be looking to ride down there with someone to cut gas expences and room expences. i would like to either get floor space or split a room with someone.

i can leave anytime. i will work it out.

if i have to drive down there myself, i would like some floor space somewhere to help pay for the gas. (it would cost me about $75 to $90 in gas based on prices right now)

i would like to keep travel expences as low as possible, I would rather spend my money on the tournament and auctions.

Aug 18 2006, 01:14 PM
Hey Bryan and "El Chili",
If you send "The Great Gordo" an e-mail he might tell you how to get in.
Send to [email protected] and ask.
Be sure to mention "The Mac-C Note Challenge".
Or try this:
The way the McC-Note Challenge works is this: Send the Waterloo Club a check for $100 now and include your P.D.G.A. # and division. Your spot in the tournament is then guaranteed. When fees for the different divisions are set, we will deduct the following from your $100: your entry, ace pot, ring-of-fire, and mulligan fees. All the money left goes directly to the charity. In 2004, there were 51 McC-Note Challengers (over half the field). This added nearly $2000 to the total charitable donation!

To clarify something that has come up occasionally: this money saves your spot, not a spot. Once the tournament fills up and there is a waitlist, if you have to cancel you cant just give your spot to someone else. As with any cancellation, the spot goes to the next person on the waitlist. And believe me, as the tournament gets close, the people on the waitlist eagerly await any and every cancellation. If you do have to cancel, you will receive a refund of everything except what would have gone to the charity (and that money will still be added to the donation).

Flyers for 2006 (and thus open registration) probably wont be out until sometime in August or September, so dont wait send in your McC-Note now (mail to WDGC, PO Box 33531, Austin, TX, 78764 - payable to WDGC). See you at Waterloooooo!

Bryan: sorry no pay pal or titledisc; only the old fashioned way.

El Chile: yes, I'll be around the office next week. Give me a call and drop on by.

Registration will probably open in late August or early September, so watch the board and your email carefully if you aren't Father Dave McC-Noting.

Full Father Dave McC-Note info is below (same thing that starts off the new thread).

---------------------------------------------------

Its Father Dave McC-Note Time

The 29th Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic is rapidly approaching. As usual, the tournament will be on the third weekend in October (Oct. 21-22, 2006). Time is running out for you to reserve your spot in this incredibly popular tournament. About twenty people have already taken the Father Dave McC-Note Challenge to guarantee their place. Dont wait too long and risk missing out. Last year when the tournament was opened up for general registration, the remaining spots were claimed within 10 days.

The way the Father Dave McC-Note Challenge works is this: Send the Waterloo Club a check for $100 now. Your spot in the tournament is then guaranteed. When fees for the different divisions are set, we will deduct the following from your $100: your entry, ace pot, ring-of-fire, and mulligan fees. All the money left goes directly to the charity. In 2005, there were 53 McC-Note Challengers (over half the field). This added over $2000 to the total charitable donation!

To clarify something that has come up occasionally: this money saves your spot, not a spot. Once the tournament fills up and there is a waitlist, if you have to cancel you cant just give your spot to someone else. As with any cancellation, the spot goes to the next person on the waitlist. As the tournament gets close, the people on the waitlist eagerly await any and every cancellation. If you do have to cancel, you will receive a refund of everything except what would have gone to the charity (and that money will still be added to the donation).

Flyers for 2006 (and thus open registration) probably wont be out until sometime late in August or early September, so dont wait send in your Father Dave McC-Note now (mail to WDGC, PO Box 33531, Austin, TX, 78764 - payable to WDGC). See you at Waterloooooo!
