Wow, just noticed Chad Hein took a HUGE lead in the AM points race, that dude plays more tournament golf than me and that's hard to do...good job Chad.

Player ratings suck, atleast the points system does not have major flaws in it...the only thing us AMS can really brag about is where we finish among our peers; which equals out to points rankings.

How can points then be a true indication of who's the best player? Let's exclude BG and their might be minimal merit to this argument. Otherwise, we are still JVers.

Atleast we can control the outcome of how many points we get versus trusting a "pro" to shoot good or bad in order to determine your player rating...big flaws in the rating system but it's the closest thing we have to a handicap.

bruce_brakel
Jul 13 2005, 12:35 AM
It's not a joke at all. It is just a different game with different strategies.

Skip Bowling Green or tank there and you can forget about it. If you want to win Am Masters, you better not actually play Am Masters! That is the only reason why I beat Framo and Rat Man. They were playing for easy wins and I was playing for an obelisk.

And don't play any fun events with great payouts for ams. Play all the A-tiers with the huge multiplier and no lower divisions [and similar B-tiers if they do that where you live] so that you can get points off all the ints and recs who have to play up to play the Big Event in their neck of the woods. It will seem like great payouts if you're an advanced player because you have so many playing up and donating to your payout. If you are an am woman contender you might want to re-think playing in the women's divisions at tournaments that have a decent men's rec division.

I don't regret the money I spent to win an obelisk. It was fun. I used to have two trophies that were really special and after last year I now will have four.

My goal was to hit 970 by the end of the year. Who knows if thats going to happen though. Im thinking mid 950s or 960 for this next update though because I have alot of CRAP rounds from over 12 months ago that will be going BYE BYE!!! Then next update I will have DGLO where I averaged 995. cbdiscpimp
Jul 14 2005, 05:21 PM
Not all rounds will be factored. If your round is a certain number of points below your rating then it will be dropped. Standard deviation of 2.5 I think Chuck said. The ammount of points will very from golfer to golfer but more consistant golfers will have less rounds dropped then streaky golfers from what I understand. I think my 860 will be dropped since it is 80 points below my current rating and hopefully around 100 points lower then what I want my new rating to be :D

ANHYZER
Jul 14 2005, 05:32 PM
How do you figure the standard deviation?

CAMBAGGER
Jul 14 2005, 05:47 PM
So time has no factor in the rounds that will be dropped? The lowest rounds are dropped off or not applicable to this coming ratings update? How many rounds are dropped off, all that are so far below your rating?

dave_marchant
Jul 14 2005, 05:49 PM
Easiest way is to use a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (it is a somewhat complicated formula to compute long hand). Here is my take on how things are computed:

Enter all your round ratings to be averaged in a column (I will use 30 scores for this example).
to figure your raw average, in a cell off to the side type: =average(a1:a30)
to calculate standard deviation, in another cell off to the side type: =stdev(a1:a30)

To figure out which rounds will get dropped, type this:
= average(a1:a30) - 2.5 * stdev(a1:a30)

Then manually delete any scores in the list that fall below the result just calculated.
Then duplicate the most recent 8 ratings.
Type: = average (a1:a38)
The resulting number in the cell where you calculated the raw average will now show you your rating (or at least extremely close to it).

CAMBAGGER
Jul 14 2005, 05:52 PM

CAMBAGGER

exactly! So, if I'm rated 949, will all my sub 900 rounds be eliminated?

ck34
Jul 14 2005, 06:01 PM
That's the proper Excel technique. However, you should operate as if none of your rounds will be dropped since 2.5 SD means only 1 in 50 rounds will be dropped. Being more consistent doesn't necessarily mean fewer rounds will be dropped. It just means your range of rated rounds will be narrower and your SD smaller than others (don't want to spread that around :D).

To get the correct set of data, you need to include all rounds back to 12 months before the date of your most recent round included in the ratings. We now only go back farther than 12 months if you have fewer than 8 rounds in the last 12 months.

Thanks, I found a website that calculates it for you too- Standard Dev. Calculator (http://www.physics.csbsju.edu/stats/cstats_NROW_form.html)

Mean = 948.

Standard Deviation = 27.7

So it looks like 890 and below would be dropped for me. Which means no rounds will be dropped.

z Vaughn z
Jul 14 2005, 06:45 PM
What many people will find is that by this Standard Deviation formula, not many rounds will be dropped at all.
What I find is that the 8 recent rounds being double weighted pretty much balances out the old un-dropped crappy ratings. It appears we are running around in circles trying to find a good ratings formula.

I think that we should consider double weighting all the tournament rounds since the past update, and dropping 10% or 15% from the "old" rounds but keeping all of the recent rounds. That way you get a chance to drop some of the dead weight from 10-12 months ago, but still take advantage of recent play. I believe this would cause I more accurate player rating.

z Vaughn z
Jul 14 2005, 06:46 PM
Maybe only applying the Standard Deviation principle in the most recent double weighted rounds.

z Vaughn z
Jul 14 2005, 06:51 PM
I have figured out my rating using the past ratings criteria, and have come up with a rating anywhere from 935 (using the old un-weighted way) and 950 using last updates system.

The new SD 2.5 system fell along the same lines as the old un-weighted system.

I think across the board, the ratings will go down this update.

ck34
Jul 14 2005, 06:56 PM
All of this running around is an attempt to reduce the issue of lower rated players generating lower SSA values than higher rated players on the same course. More higher rated players had a full 15% dropped than lower rated players in the earlier system because we didn't start dropping rounds until propagators had 11 rounds. That and the fact that lower rated propagators were more likely under rated due to the time lag in the ratings updating lead to the perceived SSA differential. Double weighting and using fewer older rounds will help reduce time lag.

Those doing the calculations for their rounds have to take into account the SSA adjustment for round ratings in 2005. If you are using unofficial round ratings in your estimates, you should probably add about 8 points to those rounds because the online calculator hasn't been updated with the new formulas yet. You will see higher rated rounds this year with the new system which will offset the loss of points due to using almost all of your rounds.

Yeah but what if I entered my rounds in column b? :D

Points are easy to understand...you get points for the people you BEAT, it's that simple...I'm glad the PDGA is keeping track of them so I can beat atleast ONE person from Iowa :o

Ratings SUCK but it's better than nothing.

bruce_brakel
Jul 15 2005, 10:15 PM
Yeah, if you miss any A tiers near you and don't go to BG, its a joke. I've not placed lower than 5th all year (Mostly B tiers, and GDChallange), and I've won 4 tournies (2 B and 2 C) but I am no where close to winning even my own state's point race b/c we have a few guys that go everywhere...I place better, but they play more...in conclusion, as somewhat flawed as ratings are, they are a better indicator than points!

If you are not willing to make the sacrifice to play in "certain" tournaments than you don't have a chance to score big points. That's great you do good in the tournaments you compete in, but ratings are not a true definition of a persons skill....nice try on justifying your low point total though :D

Ratings are a better definition of your game than points are. Pretty simple.

Post count is probably the best definition but we don't have that anymore.

Funny how those sweet Iowans had to play 3 and 5 more tournaments then me and Conners did to get that many points. Its also funny how I have SPANKED them at 3 out of the 4 A Tier we have all played and the one I didnt I missed 15 20 footers and had a 2 stroke penalty for playing the course out of order. The one of the A Tiers your Iowan boy won was an A Tier I didnt get to attend becaues my travel plans got messed up. Dont worry though. I will still win points :D

Whatever man, a lot of people can say that they would be on top if they went to all the good "A" Tiers...look at Eddie_OG if he went to a couple more A tiers he would be up there with Hein.

Personally, I started this season with the goal of leading Oklahoma in AM points -AND- traveling the country as much as my schedule permits to gain more tournament experience.

I'm moving up to Pro soon, getting points up there is a lot tougher than getting them in Advanced so I'll enjoy grabbing more points for the next couple months.

Turning down cash as a practice for Am Worlds stinks of bagging. :( Maybe that's why he's set as the third rated player at Am Worlds.)

I could have swore I responded to this yesterday, but maybe I forgot to hit the post button.

Tiger was the second biggest bagger of all time. He won three US Amateur Championships in three consecutive years before turning pro. He is one of the few amateurs to qualify for more than one US Open.

One of the worlds' least known big baggers was Jack Sikma, who played for the Seattle Super Sonics for several years in the 70s and 80s. He turned down several full ride athletic scholarship offers from NCAA Div 1 schools because he wanted to go to college to get an education. So he went to my alma mater which does not even have athletic scholarships and IWU dominated the NAIA during Sikma's years.

The money a pro can make playing this game is pathetic. No one needs an excuse for not going pro in this game. No one has an obligation to go pro so you can win against weaker competition.

Well put...If people want to get this sport close to that of other more known sports, people should shut up with that bagger talk. Amatuers are going to start getting better, and better. There will be a day with countless 970 rated Ams competing at Worlds.
Ball Golf gives exemptions to Ams to compete in certain events and Majors. Often times, these Ams beat the majority of the Pro field. A player has the right to decide when they want to go pro...and until a pro can make big coin, you are going to see more guys staying Am as long as possible.

Hein prob has the points title wrapped up...would be mighty hard to come back from 2000 points...I'm sure he is hitting up all the A tiers on the east coast.

I knew I should have hit up Des Moines and Michiana.

I played a Trophy only in Open but that was just because I liked the 2 guys that were playing Open and wanted to play on their card.

So Techinically NO but for all intensive and competition purposes Yes.

I cant wait to get out there and see the course and see how I do against the BIG DOGS!!!

Wish me luck :D

What up Matt,

Yeah, BG is key for Amateur points...I might play a couple more A tiers just to try and stay in the top 5. I'm missing 2 tournament due to my wedding so it might be tough.

I have been playing like sheit lately, I changed my putting style to more of a straddle stance and it's not working...I've missed the payout by one spot in my last 2 tournaments so I'm going back to my old school style.

I've got to get my game back where it should be for USDGC.

Me too sucks because I was going to accept. It just seems that i am not charging the course and I am playing to not mess up like in KC and it just doesn't worl for me I have to ATTACK the course. Well I am going to keep up with the points thing now so good luck. <<<with the wedding too. :D:D

I see the ;), but I'll defend Eddie (and all rising stars in NC). Check out the scores from Sneeky Pete (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=4716&year=2005&includeRatings=1#Open) this last weekend.

There is lots of good comp in the Ams in NC - Eddie won against other players who were playing 966 golf! You typically need to shoot 975 golf in NC to win in the Adv division.

Last place cash (15 golfers of 35 were paid) in Open was 1005 rated golf. That was Barry Schultz!

Holla at the my fellow Iowa boys...Mr. Chad Hein along with MDR right behind him. Looks like one of the Iowa boys could possibly take home the points title...but...we'll just have to wait and see. You know...Iowa can turns out some pretty good dg'ers too. :D

Hein probably has it wrapped up, unless Robinson hits up some of the few big tournaments that are left on the schedule....Okie Open could help MDR's cause for the title. :D I would like to stay in the top 5 if at all possible, but i'm missing 2 tournaments due to the USDGC. Ogburn just won a large tournament so I guess he will be passing me up soon.

Ive caught another snag in the quest for the points race and will only be able to attend a couple more tournaments this year and not the SuperTour I had hoped for. I hope I can stay in the top 3 but if OG tears it up at Fall Finale like he did at Sneaky Pete he may pass up everyone

Oh well atleast I have another shot at getting it next year :D

WRONG. We have a TD down here stripped of his PDGA TD priviledges (and official's status) due to not turning in reports for his 3 events last year. But don't let facts get in your way.

So what your telling me is third times the charm. So if this TD doesnt turn in one event he or she still has a couple more times to screw up untill something happens???

tbender
Oct 05 2005, 11:09 AM
All 3 events happened over a 2-week period - Sat, following Sat & Sun, so he was OK at the time he ran #2 and #3. The year before he was late in getting reports/money in, but it got in. The total turnout was small, as the delay in 03 hurt him.
