Technically, if you accept cash you are no longer an AM...you can still play AM (rating under 955) but you are still considered a pro which IS contradicting.

I don't think the obelisk rules are published anywhere. If I wanted an amateur obelisk and I was a contender it might occur to me to ask before taking pro cash. I think most people who win an obelisk have the same reaction, "Me? I'm getting a what? What am I getting it for? Really?"

Dec 21 2005, 04:12 PM
Agreed.
I still think it's a bum deal though, but if I had as many points as Chad I would have inquired with the PDGA first before playing pro and accepting cash...
I can say this, I know some pros who play advanced sometimes and they NEVER get any points for playing AM but they get paid out in plastic...so basically, pros who play am get paid out but get no points    I am a little puzzled by all this.

Dec 23 2005, 02:18 PM
I know Mike Robinson has inquired with the PDGA, as most everyone knows if you email the PDGA you may or may not get a reply
Chad accepted $793 in Pro cash this season -AFTER- accumulating a butt load of points. Mike accepted a total of $80. Both of these guys were killing the entire AM field in points, maybe Chad and Mike accepted cash cuz they were not serious about the points title...a lot of people could care or less about points.

Im pretty sure they were both going after it, and didnt know that playing pro and accepting wipes out their points. Mike can probably clarify.

yeah, we both were going for the points title. We said we'd start playing open when one of us had the title wrapped up. We both thought the am points stayed after you took cash. D. Gentry said he'd get back to us on that situation after the new year. So we'll know then.

Maybe the rationale for the Rookie Season rule could be applied by analogy to the amateur season points obelisk where the player has brought it to the PDGA's attention?
In other words, 2005 is not your year of eligibility for Pro Rookie of the Year honors because you turned pro after Worlds. That's the Rookie Season Rule. The reason for the rule is so you don't have to wait four more months for going pro to avoid scruwing yourself out of a chance for a cool trophy. By the same rationale, when the PDGA knows there is this am out there who was leading the Am points thing after Worlds and went pro, he should still be eligible for the am points award, or otherwise he has to wait another four more months before turning pro.

Dec 23 2005, 11:26 PM
It all boils down to ACCEPTING the cash...I'm sure the PDGA has some sort of rule in place for these type of circumstances.

Chad isn't able to get on the board for whatever reason, but here's Dave Gentry's response to the question at hand:
Chad,
You are still eligible for end of year awards. We have a problem created by
"Pros playing Am" that we are working hard to fix. Hopefully this can be
resolved in the next week but don't worry your points will be restored.

Well I'm glad for whoever wins it then. If you were trying for it, it would be bitter to win it and then lose it because you decided to quit bagging and move up! Whoever gets it, it will always remind him of a lot of good times the year he drove all over the country playing A-tiers, meeting new people and all.

Does this mean I can accept cash in a tournament next month and for the rest of the season play Advanced to gain AM points? This makes no sense  if this is the way the PDGA handles AM points this means I can play pro and not worry about my AM points going away.
Cool, thanks for clarification.
bruce_brakel
Jan 22 2006, 02:14 PM
No, it means that if you rack up enough points this month to win the obelisk and accept cash next month, you remain eligible. Once you take pro cash, you quit accumulating am points.
Because of database programming problems the PDGA was not tracking that automatically. Pros playing in amateur divisions, like Sarah Demar playing Men's Rec, were still earning amateur points even after they took pro cash.

I'm pretty sure the 05' season is over for accumulating points, Bruce.

Quote: Pros rated < 955 may compete in select amateur divisions at PDGA events, for which they qualify.Points are not awarded to Pros playing AM.
Taken off the 2005 PDGA Tour Divisions, Ratings & Point Factors Table.
Take cash at a sanctioned event, playing Pro and your AM career is over, unless your <955, which right now you are, but you get no points.
