Lightning does not sponsor anyone. Before Justin Bunnell was sponsored by Gateway he called up the Lightning representative and said he was interested in being sponsored and they turned him down right away saying they don't sponsor anyone. They would probably turn down Barry Schultz and Ken Climo simply because they have no clue who they are! :p

That can't be it Keith, or Skinner would never make it :)
I actually played less this year than any of the past 5 (only 12 events), but traveled more (NY, WV, VA, NC, SC, MA, PA, MD, &the Bahamas) 8 states and another country aint bad for 12 events :)

I actually tried to get on the team a few years back, but probably asked in a way (or at a time) that was outside their bounds. I told them if they'd pay all my entry fees, I'd donate all my winnings by buying baskets for courses around the country, but they didn't bite. I just wrote Dave and asked if there was a place for me on the team - we'll see what he says.

Why do you have to be over 1000 rating to be considered a "touring player"? That's BS!

I live in Nebraska and hit 25 tournies in '06 from Adair, Oregon to Rock Hill, South Carolina. I call that touring. Why doesn't the PDGA send you something to put on ur bag if you hit 25 tournies a year?

Here are the qualifications for 2006 Tour Card:
www.pdga.com/documents/td/2006tourinfo.php (http://www.pdga.com/documents/td/2006tourinfo.php)

Playing 25+ events works as long as you won at least $2000.

UHHH....`cause he hasn't done anything...Ian is not the best golfer in Austin I don't know what you been smokin while you've been couped up in your house but you tend forget about the 1000+ rated golfers in the area...True he <font color="red">WAS </font> on his way to being <font color="red"> ONE </font>of the best in the area. Who knows where his DG career is headed now, maybe down the tubes like his skating ability.

Ok Jeff is being kind of harsh but I am not taking anything away from him just saying that nobody shot good at Oktoberfest. BTW I don't think Ian is the best Player in Austin. He is up there but by saying that you are taking a lot of credit away from Joel, Alex, Mike, Vinnie, and a few the other local guys.

This is Ian Hovey. I'm not gonna sit on this board and talk smack about things they know nothing about, and also ruin my previous spnsorship oppurtunities by acting like my friend but at the same time going behind my back and runing their mouth when I might threaten them. (MATT)
So I've made some mistakes and I'm coming out of it. My disc golf career IS!!! going somewhere. This is only the beginning. Im extremely sorry I made those mistakes. My game is NOT going down the tubes, and neither is my skating. I can only get better at this point. I'm not looking for sponsorship. I get the feeling I might never get sponsored and Im okay with that. But I'm going to prove to myself that I can make it in this great sport that helped put me on this earth.

Thanks to all those who still support and see potential in me. I really appreciate it.

Ian what did I say that was so bad? I said that to say you were the best player in Austin was not an accurate statement right? I mean there are a lot of good players in that town and I think that saying you are the best is taking away from them. I also said that "he is the best player in Texas for his age group" may not be very accurate as well. Then I stated that you won a B-tier with 1000 rated golf and that I wish I had gone since the Open players didn't play so hoTT.

I just don't understand what is so wrong with that?

No saying that he is better than 6 other 1000+ guys in the area when he is 991 in my opinion is not a fair statement and I said so. I never said he won the event because everyone else played bad because I know he didn't play his best as well.

I really like Ian but I also like many other Austin Pros and to say he is better then them IMHO isn't fair especially since he's only played 1 pro event where some of those pros signed up. I also wasn't too fond of Joe saying he was the best player for his age in the state due to the fact we are the same age and he hasn't ever beaten me.

but all divisions played the same layouts.

Also another thing people often forget about is weather / wind.

Let's say you get to a hole that you ussualy just get a three on. It is really windy and you are thinking man it would suck to be hole X right now.

Well, the division up from you could be on hole X and then when you get there, the weather has calmed and you get a better score than most of the field.

This is also why it's important to keep divisions together in sanctioned play and also starting on consecutive holes.

cornhuskers9495
Feb 07 2007, 03:01 PM
That's why @ the dgc, if you are teeing in the moring, its hard to move up because its windier and colder. When the lead cards tee, its usually warmer and the wind subsides.

whats BMI?

In order to be considered for the team a player must have endorsements from team members who will vouch for a player's character and sportsmanship on and off the course. Player ratings, being active in promoting disc golf on the local level as well as how much you tour are some of the other factors that are considered.

Matt,

MTL just PM'd me about this, so I guess the word is out....

Yes, we talked to Jonathan Poole a couple days ago. Obviously David is not as high a rated player as others on the team but they hope he can continue to reach out to the younger crowd, and that he continues to improve. The distance records and World' Championships didn't hurt of course. They were also impressed with the reviews they have received from others regarding his good sportsmanship - so many thanks to you and all the others who have spoken highly of him.

Needless to say he is quite honored and I'm a very proud Dad though I try not to be pushy that way. I realize there are higher rated players out there, so I have not trumpeted it too loudly, and besides it's his honor mainly not mine, and he's too young to be surfing and posting on message boards. (It's enough for him to keep practicing and not get wrapped up in who said what about whom etc. or writing something he later wishes he wouldn't have written himself)

To say the least, David is very stoked about all of this. He's really practicing hard and hoping to get to the level of his new teamates as soon as possible. For me, as it always has been, I'm just happy to have a sport so conducive to spending great times with my son. Thanks everyone! (especially Dave Gilstrap and Billy Crump who put a lot of good words in for David)

Congratulations both Dave and Dave Jr., this is a wonderful thing for the sport of disc golf! Big props to Innova for recognizing the potential and specific growth interest young David brings to both their company and the sport. I'm sure his competitive nature and pure sportsmanship will reward both Innova and the sport for many years to come! Hats off!

I agree - Innova has picked up some class acts this year with Craig Gangloff and Alan Beaver and this signing of 11 year old PHENOM Dave Jr. is great as well.

I'm glad to see companies sponsering players for things other than a rating!

Congrats Dave and Good work Innova. Things like this make me want to not throw my Buzzzs, but they are just so freaking awesome - lol

Oh yeah, Congrats Craig and Beav! I truly appreciate the putting lessons Craiger, as well as from Crump. Now if I can just get Schwebby to help me master the thumber, and Markus to assist me with the bombs! :D

Congrats to Wiggins Jr. The first PDGA I ever played was Mooky's Cup 3 yrs ago and Wiggins Jr. and his dad were in my group. I thought he was caddying for his dad, until he threw of the first tee. Both Wiggins were a class act that day. Congrats!

Congrats little Dave!

I took third in my first PDGA tourney, and Dave beat me by 10. I also got to ride down to Sanford with both Daves last year. Jr. spent time in every seat in that van, bouncing all over the place. Good kid, good family.

Who knew they had chocolate gum and it could turn your round around that quick after you start chewing it.

Congrats little wiggins. It is always a pleasure to play with you. Still wish you were playing intermediate just so I could go home at night and say I did not lose to an 11 year old today. But you are a good kid and keep up the good work on the course. Congrats to Papa Wiggins as well for raising such a fine young gentleman and golfer.
