ODB 'Unique' as Ever on Posthumous Album

NEW YORK (Billboard) - The album rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard was working on when he died last fall has been christened "A Son Unique" and will be released June 21.

The 13-track set is a joint venture between the new Damon Dash Music Group (DDMG) and the RZA's Wu-Tang Records, via Island Def Jam.

Dash hosted a playback of the album Tuesday night at the label's offices. While guests awaited his arrival, an as-yet-untitled documentary was aired that touched on ODB's release from prison, his subsequent signing with Roc-A-Fella and footage of him in the studio with the Neptunes' Pharrell Williams.

The documentary is set to air on BET or MTV.

As for "A Son Unique," it is packed with ODB's signature off-key wailing and bizarre lyrics. The album begins with "Lift Ya Skirt," produced by Mark Ronson and featuring Missy Elliott atop piano loops and a throbbing bass line.

Other highlights include "Back in the Air," "Stomp" and "Dirty & Grimey."

The album is loaded with guest appearances from N.O.R.E., the Clipse, M.O.P.'s Lil' Fame, Young Gunz' Young Chris, plus Wu-Tang Clan comrades Ghostface, Raekwon and Method Man. The latter two artists join Macy Gray on first single "Intoxicated," which was recently serviced to U.S. radio outlets.

On the production side, RZA handled four tracks, alongside DJ Premier, Rockwilder, Damon Elliott, the Neptunes, Dame Grease, Boola and Soul Diggaz.

While Dash admitted he was initially apprehensive about releasing the album following ODB's untimely death, he said he was very pleased with the outcome. But he expressed displeasure with the legal battle that has ensued between the rapper's mother and his widow, Icelene Jones.

The dispute became a little too close for comfort on Tuesday night, as Dash was met in the building's lobby on the way to the playback by Icelene, her children and her lawyer.

Visibly shaken by the encounter, Dash insisted his decision to press on with the release of "A Son Unique" was not driven by a desire to exploit the family or the legacy of ODB. Continued ...

As previously reported, DDMG is giving fans the opportunity to remix the non-album track "Dirty Dirty" for use as a B-side on a future single.
