Joe, Waterloo DGC is aware of the fallen tree and we're planning workdays after the Waterloo Classic.
Dan is thinking about creating a bench out of the fallen tree and making a new box in front of it instead of removing it all together.

Yep, Bart is still under construction and missing several holes.
But Joel is still throwing his weekly wednesday mini.
Speaking of... Don't forget that tonight is the Zilker mini (now on the south side), and it will be followed by a general club meeting just over at the Polo Picnic Table area - where we usually set up for Ice Bowl.
You can also purchase the 28th waterloo candy fundraiser discs and minis at both the mini and the meeting. They came out pretty nice; good picture of Father Dave at the 2000 waterloo tournament.
Hope to see you there,

Oh, and since the ace pot is starting back over, we have decided to add a little spice to it for this mini. If there is an ace, in addition to winning the $2 per person ace pot, the winner will also receive one of our very limited 28th Waterloo full color trophy discs, featuring a great photo of Father Dave. If there is more than one ace, the money will be split and there will be a CTP for the disc. The south side has lots of holes that can be aced, so come on out for a fun mini.

Thanks everyone who came out for the mini and/or meeting. We had 20 people play the mini and most stuck around for a quick club meeting, mainly about Waterloo. It went well, and I think we're pretty set for the weekend. Should be lots of fun.
There was one ace, for $38 and the Tayloe Trophy disc. It was on #5..... by me :D
My first ace at Zilker (in only 17 years of trying :o). I've already got the disc on my wall at work. Now I get to look at Dave's smiling face every day. :)

There wont be a club weekly mini or newbie night at Zilker this Thursday evening (oct 13th), instead we will be working on finalizing all the details for the Waterloo tournament this weekend. However, we will resume with the mini and newbie night on Oct 20th.
Then Oct 27th will be the final night of the year because the time change occurs a few days later and it will be getting dark too early to have it. Any unclaimed ace pot at the end of the mini on the 27th will be paid out through a CTP.
Below is some information about Waterloo, mainly for people not in the singles part of the tournament. There is also a lot more info and answers to common questions on the waterloo club site www.austindiscgolf.org. (http://www.austindiscgolf.org.) Just go to the tournament page by clicking on the tournament logo (or the direct link is http://www.austindiscgolf.org/Classic%202005.htm). Info includes parking, directions, check-in, doubles, full schedule for the weekend, fundraising stuff, CFRs, etc. Check back during the week for any additional updates.
Thanks,

This weekend (October 14-16, 2005) will be the
28th ANNUAL WATERLOO DISC GOLF CLASSIC
IN MEMORY OF DAVID TAYLOE
BENEFITING THE AUSTIN RONALD McDONALD HOUSE
HONORING THE SPIRIT OF OUR BELOVED FRIEND
Even if you arent playing in the singles part of the event on Saturday and Sunday, you can still come play Doubles on Friday, October 14th. There will be a lot of fun going on all weekend, for players and spectators, so come on down and join us for a special Austin event.
Doubles: Friday October 14th, flex start 1 pm 4:30/5:00 -ish. Open to everyone, $10 per person, bring your own partner. We will have to stop accepting teams around 4:30 5 pm, so that everyone who starts will be able to finish before dark. Results will be posted as soon as possible on Saturday. Awards for doubles will be ready by lunch on Sunday the 16th. Leave contact info when signing up if you wont be around on Sunday. Last year, we pushed over 60 teams through on Friday, so the course plays fairly quickly. Show up early for the best chance to play, dont wait until late in the afternoon and take a chance on being turned away. Cards will be limited to 2 teams to keep things flowing smoothly.
Also, we will be holding a huge raffle (over $1,000 worth of stuff, including a basket) and silent auction (lots of great stuff to bid on) all weekend. You dont have to be present to win. All proceeds go towards the fundraising.
Plus, we will be having the inaugural the inaugural Tayloe Toe Throw on Sunday October 16th, right after lunch. Dave held the world record for throwing a Frisbee with his toes, hurling a disc 137 feet. We will gather in the fairway of hole #4 to have fun trying to duplicate this feat. The event is fee and everyone is invited to participate. Im sure Daves spirit will be with us as we make fools of ourselves trying to do this. Well have some official Father Dave stuff to give away as prizes. Come join the fun!
Waterloo Park is located in downtown Austin. It is bordered by E.15th, Red River, E.12th, and Trinity. Tournament HQ is on the wooden deck near Trinity & E.13th.
Parking could be difficult on Friday and Saturday, but will be very easy on Sunday. On Friday, the state parking garages on Trinity, across the street from the park, will not be available until after 5 pm. On Saturday, they will not be available at all most of the day because of the UT football game that day (unless you pay the parking fee - $5 last year). On Sunday, all of the garages will be available for free parking. For other parking, there is a small lot in the park that will be free all 3 days (enter off of 12th Street - but it doesnt hold too many cars). There are also parking meters on Red River, 12th, 13th, and 14th streets, and some on Trinity and Brazos. You will have to pay the meters on Friday until about 5 or 6 pm, but they should be free the rest of the weekend (be sure to check the actual meter for exact times you must pay).

Just a reminder that this Thursday, October 27th, is the clubs final Zilker weekly mini of the season. Sign-up starts at 5 pm and tee off is at 5:30, and we are on the south layout now. The ace pot carried over from last week starts at $22. If there are no aces this week, then there will be a CTP at the end of the round to give away the money. If we have a good turnout, there could easily be $60 - $80 up for grabs.
We also have a few more of the full color Tayloe minis for $10, and well have them available for purchase at the mini. If youd like to reserve one, just let me know.

WATERLOO DISC GOLF CLUBS
6TH ANNUAL ICE BOWL
Saturday February 4, 2006
Zilker Park Disc Golf Course (18 Hole Setup)
Signup Begins at 11:00 am
(at Polo Picnic Tables, by hole #1 of the north course)
Start at 12:30 pm
As many of you probably know, the Ice Bowl was started a number of years ago to have a day of disc golf solidarity in the gloom of winter (well, ok it isn't usually THAT gloomy around here, but you get the idea). Every year, clubs and people from around the world gather together to help fight hunger within their communities and to have a day of fun playing disc golf no matter what the weather.
The rules of the Ice Bowl are simple: 1) Under no circumstances can an Ice Bowl be postponed or cancelled; 2) No wimps or whiners allowed; 3) There are no excuses for not attending!
We will be raising money and food for the Capital Area Food Bank. The entry fee is $13 and 3 cans of food (or $15 and no food). For that $13, you will receive either an Ice Bowl Disc and Mini or an Ice Bowl T-Shirt (supplies of both are limited - first come first choice; we will also have long-sleeve shirts, but there is an extra $3 fee for them). After that, we are playing for fun!!! All proceeds will go directly to the charity.
SPECIAL PRIZE TO PERSON WHO BRINGS THE MOST POUNDS OF FOOD!!!
We will also have some CTP contests and maybe some other fun stuff. The whole idea is to have a great time while helping others out who really need it. If you have anything you would like to donate as CTP prizes, please let us know. Anything we receive, we will give away!

Just a reminder that your help is needed this Saturday, April 22nd; 9 am 1 pm.
Specific to disc golf, there will be 2 events going on during: Austins Its My Park Day.
1) The Waterloo Clubs work day at Pease Park. Items to be done include: painting the new bulletin board; prepare/cleanup a couple of alternate boxes; some brush and tree trimming (especially on #15); and trash pickup Come help clean up and improve the disc golf course and get it ready for the big Capital of Texas Open in May. Snacks and drinks available. Please bring work gloves, loppers, shovels, and rakes.
Be careful to select the Clubs project when registering as there is another project at Pease Park too by a different group (removing non-native plants and some erosion control on one of the hillsides and they are going to have a short disc golf clinic afterwards J Gotta love it!)
2) The South Austin DGAs work day at Mary Moore Searight. They are going to replace some benches, clean up the course, remove graffiti, and more. Lunch will be provided. Golf afterwards.
Projects will be going on in lots of Austins parks. You can see a full list of projects by going to the Austin Parks Foundation website: http://www.austinparks.org/ItsMyParkDay.html
Heres how you can help: go to the site above and register as a volunteer on one of the projects; then show up on the 22nd and help improve a park. Oh, and help spread the word and get other golfers and friends to come help too. Even if you dont pre-register, just show up at the park on Saturday morning and help us make a difference.
However, if you pre-register by Wednesday, there will be a shirt available for you in your size from Austin Parks Foundation, plus youll help us gauge how much drink and snack to have available.
This is an excellent opportunity to show that disc golfers care about our parks and that we want to maintain and improve them.
I also saw a park cleanup project at Bartholomew. It is not specific to disc golf, but Im sure theyd love some disc golfers to help, and cleaning up the creek is certainly something that will make the course nicer. If you go, be sure to let them know you are a golfer and that you are there because you care about the park.
Thanks,
Waterloo Disc Golf Club

As many of you can probably guess, Pease Park took a pounding from the storms last week. 70 mph winds have a way of causing a lot of damage. With COTO coming up in just 10 days, we are going to need to do a lot of work on the park.
We know that not everyone can make every work day (and we dont expect you to ), but please try to come out to one or more of our upcoming work sessions.
We have Manor this Saturday (see club workday thread or the Manor thread under Courses), Mike needs a good turnout to get the clearing finished. This is going to be an awesome course, but will definitely take some work this Saturday by the club and its volunteers to get it closer to completion.
Then on Monday Thursday next week, well be doing work each afternoon and evening at Pease. Mike Suida and/or Mitch Justice will be at the park each day directing the efforts. We have a lot of trees to clear, tee boxes to work on, and other items to get done.
----------------------------------------
Also, we are in need of additional staff people during the COTO tournament. If you can help out one day, two days, or all three, please let me or Patty Justice know (teamjustice@mail.ev1.net).
On Tuesday (May 16th) after the Pease mini, we will be having a COTO staff meeting up at Bongos BBQ (on West 24th & San Gabriel) for everyone who is volunteering that weekend. Well meet at the park and then head up there, probably around 7:45 8, depending on when the mini finishes; or just meet us up there.
----------------------------------------
Next, we have a hotel deal worked out for COTO. It is a rough time for rooms near downtown because it is prom weekend as well as State UIL competition, so we werent able to get many rooms, but we did get a good deal. Details are:
Suburban Lodge
2501 south IH35 Austin Tx 78741
512-712-9920
They were only able to block 10 rooms for us. Two of those are already taken, so, there are 8 still available.
The rate is $49.99/night
Each room has: 2 queen sized beds, a kitchenette, I-net access, & cable.
Please reference the Capital of Texas Open when reserving one of the rooms. It may be easiest to call Mitch at 512-563-6482 and get a confirmation # before you contact the hotel.
---------------------------------------
And the best for last
We have TWO beer sponsors for COTO this year! The Real Ale Brewing Company in Blanco and New Belgium Brewing will each be providing kegs for our weekend enjoyment.
Lunch will be available both days. One day will be on us, and the other will be $5 for everything. More details to come
There will be an awesome raffle that will include a San Saba basket as well as lots of other cool stuff!
Dont forget about Doubles on Friday. Flex tee off starting at 1:30 ($20.00 per team..pay at the park).
--------------------------------------------------
Entries are flyin in! Sign up TODAY on www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com) to secure your spot. The flyer is below.
We already have 2 pro women and 5 advanced women. Cmon ladies, wed love to have a huge womens turnout. Well treat you right

9 brand new double-chain discatchers and 18 new sleeves have been purchased by Waterloo Disc Golf Club for Zilker. :D
2 workdays are scheduled to get it all installed: Saturday July 15th at 9 am, and Saturday July 22nd at 9 am.
Saturday July 15th, start at 9 am:
Removal of old sleeves from the ground for all nine holes on the South Layout
Installation of 9 new sleeves in the same spots
Saturday July 22nd, start at 9 am:
Installation of new baskets on the South Layout, but only temporarily for a few days
Removal of old baskets and old sleeves on the North Layout
Removal of old sleeves for the North Layout by PARD
Installation of new sleeves
Then, on Wednesday July 26th or Thursday July 27th, late afternoon or early evening we'll move the new baskets to the North Layout and install sleeve caps on the South Layout sleeves.
We need volunteers both saturdays. If we have enough folks (and a few with trucks), we can also take some trucks over to the area near the mopac foot bridge where there is a bunch of mulch and put some out on the course.
We need wheelbarrows for mixing the concrete; mixing poles (for stirring); water buckets, shovels, - and if we do the mulching, some rakes would help too. Don't forget your work gloves.
At some point in the near future we will auction, raffle, and/or sell the old zilker baskets to help recover some of the costs. Please contact the club if you are interested in one of them.
Thanks!!! :D

The workday last Saturday at Zilker went really well! Thank you to everyone who came out and helped us dig out the old sleeves and set new sleeves on the south layout. Aaron Stair, Lou Moreno, Stephen Barkley, Luis Guerrero II, Matt Burton, Moe Overton, Scott Allen, Todd Golden, Mark McCrimmon, and me. Mark brought a bunch of snacks and drinks too, thanks Mark! Great turnout from the South Austin guys! Really good help from the PARD Zilker crew too.
This Saturday morning, July 22nd, starting at 9:00 am, well remove the baskets and sleeves from the north layout, set new sleeves there, and install the brand new baskets on the south layout. Please come out and help if you can, we need volunteers. Bring shovels (sharpshooters are especially helpful), wheelbarrows, rockbars, work gloves. Well have snacks and drinks available. If we have enough folks, we may put some mulch out on the course too.
Sometime next week (before league on Thursday), well move the new baskets from the south side back to the north side.
Thanks Bert & Dave for picking up the new baskets from Circle R and bringing them on in to the park!!! :D
----------------------------------------------------------
We have worked out a deal with Zilker where if you are coming out for the workday this Saturday, or are playing disc golf on Thursday evening, you DONT have to pay the $3 parking fee. Just mention at the gate that you are there for the workday (sat morning) or for disc golf (thurs).

I just found out today from the Zilker Parks crew that there will be a 5K race in the park tomorrow morning. They will have the roads on the north side closed off during the race.
However, they said that it should be pretty much done by the time our work is starting.
If you get there and the roads are still shut, try parking under MoPac near the western end of the course (across from basket #2 and fairway #3 on the north), at least until they open it back up.
Hope to see you there,

THE NEW BASKETS ARE IN!!! :D
They are in the South Layout right now, but just for a few days.
Thank you to everyone who came out to help on Saturday! You guys were great. :D
Dave McKinney, Bert Lirette, Tom Peirce, Del Stair, Lou Moreno, me, Joe Torrence, Rich Collins, James Colangelo, Jason Winkel, Micah Winters
There was also a group of 4 casual golfers who stayed to help for a little while before having to head elsewhere: Shane Bryant, Joel Stevens, Mark Williams, Randy Moore.
And just when we reached the "starved for lunch" stage, Micah Winters showed up with a couple of pizzas from Austin's Pizza for the crew. What great timing :D
Special thanks to Dave and Bert for getting up really early and driving out to Circle R to pick up the baskets first thing in the morning (and thank you to Patty Justice for being up and out there at work early enough to meet them :D).

Well, the ACL fest has come and gone. As expected, the parks dept is very busy cleaning up and disassembling everything from the fest, so it will be awhile before they can get the baskets back up.
So the club wants to do it sooner ourselves. However, if we are going to do it during the week, it has to be during the day when the maintenance area is open.
What we would like to do is to put it back up tomorrow (Thursday) at lunchtime or in the early afternoon. Ive got a truck and we can do it with just one truck, but a second would make things faster and easier. Also, we need another 2 or 3 people to help with the lifting/carrying.
If you can come down to Zilker tomorrow at 12:15 to help, please email me and let me know. If you cant do it at lunchtime, but can do it around 2:30, let me know that also.
If we can get enough folks to commit to being there at 12:15, then well do it then. If not, then well try for 2:30. If we dont get enough response at all to put them up during the day, then it will have to be done this weekend.
Thanks,
Gordon

For that $13, you will receive either an Ice Bowl Disc and Mini OR an Ice Bowl T-Shirt (supplies of both are limited - first come first choice; we will also have long-sleeve shirts, but there is an extra $3 fee for them). After that, we are playing for fun!!! All proceeds will go directly to the charity.
We will also have some CTP contests and maybe some other fun stuff. The whole idea is to have a great time while helping others out who really need it. If you have anything you would like to donate as CTP prizes, please let us know. Anything we receive, we will give away!

Here are some announcements / extra information / reminders about Ice Bowl:
Signup Begins at 11:00 am (at Polo Picnic Tables, by hole #1 of the north course)
Choice of shirts / discs will be first come first served
Start at 12:30 pm
entry fee is $13 and 3 cans of food (or $15 and no food);
all players will receive an ice bowl shirt (short sleeve) or an ice bowl dx disc&mini; upgrades to long sleeve shirts or higher-end discs are available for a few extra dollars, but quantities are limited
There will be time for the folks to play the Pease Mini that morning, but youll need to come directly to Zilker as soon as your round is over. Ask Dave Moody (or whoever is running it) to call me and let me know that you are on the way. That way we can speed up your registration & hole assignment.
We could use some extra volunteers to help get the course set up, take registrations, make scorecards, etc, plus some stuff at the end of the round. If you can help, please let me know (by PM or by email to gordon@ventbird.com). It is easy for volunteers to play too (in fact, most will play), so you wont have to sacrifice taking part in the event just to help. We need folks there around 9 am to help get everything set up.
After the round, we will have a CTP game for a bunch of donated prizes, so bring some extra bucks.
Speaking of prizes, we could really use some donations. We dont go out seeking big sponsorships for Ice Bowl. Instead, we ask that golfers try and bring something small to give away. Could be a disc or a shirt or a towel, or even non-disc golf stuff. We want to make up some nice prize packages for our CTP games, and it would be great to have something to give to 1st place in each division if we can.
Thanks and see you soon!

Just a reminder that this Saturday, April 14th, is Austin Parks Foundations Its My Park Day. There are projects all over the city (almost 50 in all) where volunteers will be working to improve our citys parks. There are 3 especially that we want to emphasize.
All projects are from 9 am 1 pm
Lots more info, including a full list of projects at: http://www.austinparks.org/itsmypark.html
I spoke with the Parks Foundation folks on Wednesday evening, and it seems that the projects at Bartholomew and Searight have pretty good volunteer commitments already (that was great to hear). A few more folks at each would be great, but the real need for volunteers is at Pease! Be sure to let the organizers know that you are part of the disc golf community.
Pease Park: Bring your shovel or rake and get ready to move mountains of mulch! We will be helping build up the soil at the north end of Pease Park, encouraging grass to grow and reducing soil erosion by providing a thick covering of mulch. Volunteers should bring work gloves, and if you've got them, rakes, shovels, buckets and wheelbarrows. Contact: davidkirby5@hotmail.com
Mary Moore Searight: Join South Austin Disc Association for an overhaul of Mary Moore Searight park and disc golf course. Work will include mulching, rock and erosion work, installing rubberized mats under picnic tables, repairing signs, picking up litter, and more. This event is for all ages. A barbecue lunch and refreshments will be served. Contact: aarontherock@sbcglobal.net
Bartholomew: Several projects will be going on during It's My Park Day. We will clean the Upper Tanehill Creek as it winds through the park, install new play equipment, clean and paint the picnic venues, and clean the children's play area. Contact: roohut@grandecom.net
Last year, they had some nice goodies for the volunteers. Im sure they will do something similar this year. Also, the organizers at each project should have some snacks and water available. So please come on out and help make all our parks a little nicer. If you want to help out, but not necessarily at one of the places/projects, check the APF project page for a full list of what is going on (the link is at the top of this postl).
Have a great weekend!

Work Evenings
Pease Park Disc Golf Course
Friday May 4th & Monday May 7th
Friday May 4th, 4 pm dark
Monday May 7th, 5 pm dark
We will focus on digging out the old tee boxes to get ready to install crushed limestone tee boxes (kind of like road base not at all like the old crushed granite material).
This is going to be a lot of work, so we really need a lot of disc golfers to come out and help. These new boxes should be a huge improvement over the old ones. Meet at the parking lot by the practice basket (on Parkway, just north of W.24th/Windsor Rd.)
If you can, please bring shovels, rock bars, and work gloves

The weather doesnt look like it is going to be too cooperative this week, so well really need to get work done when we can. Weve got a lot of teebox digging to do.
If you have any free time later in the week, well also be working on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday evening (starting at 5-6 pm ish each evening), and then a big workday on Saturday May 12th. Start time 8:00 am.

We will have one more work evening at Pease tonight (Wednesday May 9th). Mitch will be down there pretty soon (probably by 4 pm at the latest) and well work until we are fully prepared for Saturday or until it gets dark.
Well be finishing up getting the new tee boxes dug out and ready for the limestone, and if possible well move the rest of that mulch (and maybe re-paint the benches).
Please go down and help out if you can.
And then
BIG WORKDAY SATURDAY MAY 12TH

This means we WILL be starting up Spring Waterleague this Thursday, April 24th. Kind of short notice, so please help us spread the word. Plus, it is a 10-week league and only your 5 best scores will count so there will be plenty of time to join the league on the 2nd week, or even the later weeks.

KXAN (channel 36) is running a story this evening (mon.nov 2nd) on Pease Park and the changes in store for the park and the disc golf course, and some of the controversies. The main story will be on their 5 pm broadcast (supposedly about half-way through, but who really knows what time it will actually air), and maybe, possibly shorter versions at 6pm and 10pm.
If you watch, be kind even after all these years interviews still make me very nervous; and who knows what kind of sound bites will get pulled out of the full interview. But hey, I made a couple of putts :)
As a reminder
on this Wednesday evening (nov 4th) is a City of Austin meeting about Pease Park and the impact future city work will have on the course, as well as possible permanent changes to the course. Here is the email we received from the city about it. I believe the location listed is the activity center near W. 29th and N. Lamar (across W. 29th from the bike shop). It would be great to have a big turnout from the golfers to show that we really do care about our course at Pease, so please try to attend if you can.

Here is more info on the November 14th Trees for Pease workday. It is very important that we get as many disc golfers out there helping as possible!
The planting starts at 9:30 am
Meet by the big picnic table area at the south end of the park (by the playground). When you check in with the organizers, please mention you are a disc golfer (and heck, wear a disc golf shirt so the other volunteers will know too).
They recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting dirty, bring gloves and if you have a wheelbarrow that you can bring, it would be greatly appreciated.
You can register as a volunteer by clicking here: https://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1205/t/4029/l/eng/p/salsa/event/common/public/?event_KEY=54712
If you want to get there a little early, they will also have Veterans Day ceremonies and tree planting from 8:30 to 9 am.
After the work, there will be live music and refreshments from noon - 3:00 pm (music by Will Sexton and the Wine and Nuts; refreshments courtesy of Blue Star Cafeteria, Uncle Billy's Brew&Que, and Austin Java).
Come on out and celebrate Pease, Love, and Rock & Roll! (their slogan, not ours :))
If you can't make it but would like to donate funds to the project, you can send a check to Austin Parks Foundation (payable to APF), just put in the memo line "Trees for Pease" project, and also mention that you are a disc golfer. Because it is payable to APF you can get a tax deduction for making a charitable contribution. APF, 816 Congress Ave, Suite 1680, Austin, TX, 78701. You can also donate online by going to the Member Page of the APF website and making a gift to the Pease Park Fund - http://www.austinparks.org/member.html The APF has figured that it takes about $150 per tree to plant it and keep it irrigated.
The Waterloo Club is donating $300 to the project, and we are working hard to get a lot of volunteers there to help that day. We hope you can join us in this worthy effort to improve Pease Park.
Thanks,
Waterloo Disc Golf Club

We just got word from Stephanie Allen at South Austin Disc Association of changes to the Searight construction plan, and the sudden scheduling of a work day this weekend.
Stephanie sent:
Good afternoon all
Due to a change in plans, this weekend all 18 baskets will be pulled so that the City can work on the entire course at once (rather than keeping 9 holes open at a time). The course will be back up and running once all work is completed.
In light of this, we are holding our first big work day this Saturday, January 9th. Starting at 8:00 a.m., we'll be:
--Pulling baskets, benches and trash cans
--Spreading mulch on the back nine
--Cleaning off the new tee pads on the back nine
--General trash pick up
We'll have a breakfast burritos in the morning - first come, first serve. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! If you have a rake to help with the mulch-spreading, please bring it along.
The amount of hours we spend will depend on how many folks come out to help, so please put on your warmest jacket, earmuffs and scarves and come on out!
Thanks in advance and see you out there!

SEARIGHT DISC GOLF COURSE IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!!!!!
WOOHOO!!!
I received this just a little while ago from SADA...
No, this is not an early April Fool's joke - as of an hour ago, all baskets were assembled and installed.
SEARIGHT DISC GOLF COURSE IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!!!!!
I want to thank John Paul from the City and the volunteers that took time out on their Wednesday workday to get these baskets up in record time today: Mike "Meteor Mike" Schulgen, Bert Benavides, Miguel Guerrero, Jeremy "Smoke" Sanchez, Kenny G, and I'm sure a handful of others. Thanks guys!
In addition, I must thank the numerous volunteers that have come out all the workdays to make this happen, with notable thanks to Scott Allen, James Gonzales, Aaron Stair, Del Stair, and Tom Peirce for coming out for all the workdays, assisting with the necessary equipment and tools, and working hand in hand with City workers to make the workdays smooth-sailing and productive.
They certainly are not alone - there are many, many more people that gave their sweat and blood for this project - you all know who you are and you are oh-so appreciated!
Lastly, thanks to Mike Olse, Gene Faulk, Rosie Weaver, and the other City and APF team members that worked closely with SADA throughout the renovations. Thanks to Waterloo and DiscNation for continuing to support the project financially, but just as important, for inspiring more folks to come out for the workdays.
SADA will continue to work with the City and the Austin Parks Foundation to maintain the park and help with repairs. The club is working on holding a benefit tournament in the next month or so, so please keep that in mind so you can help us continue to pay this forward, for this park and all the other disc golf parks in the City.
Thank you everyone!!!!! See you on the course!

Just a reminder that tomorrow evening, Wednesday June 23rd, there is a very important Public Meeting about the future of Bartholomew Park. Disc golfers NEED to attend this meeting to voice support for keeping a disc golf course in Bartholomew.
The situation is not as dire as at Pease. They have not threatened to pull the course out. HOWEVER, if disc golf is not seen as a need or desire of the park users and residents, then it is likely it wont remain a feature of the park.
We need you to show up at this meeting and say that disc golf is an appropriate activity and a desired activity for the park.
It would be especially helpful for disc golfers who live in one of the neighborhoods near the park to show up and voice your support (or if you have friends who live near there, bring them).

Waterloo Disc Golf Club is partnering with the Austin Parks & Recreation Department to make some long overdue, much needed improvements to the disc golf course at Zilker Park.
These include major improvements such as concrete tee pads on the south 9 holes and limestone benches on all the holes (similar to Circle C & Searight). These also include minor improvements like the trails/paths, and likely further down the road a ways tee signs for the whole course.
The Waterloo Club has already committed $1500 of club funds to the project and weve raised another $500 from individuals. Well also be having some volunteer events for working on the course that will be announced once they are scheduled. The city will be providing a lot of the labor and a lot of the equipment and supplies, plus some funding as well.
What the club needs now are some additional funds for the project. The more money we can raise, the more work we can do and the quicker we can do it.
To donate in person, come by the Thursday evening Zilker League this Thursday (Oct. 28th) or the Thursday after that (Nov 4th) we are playing twice around the south side, so just look for Gordon or Phil Haik; or you can do it at the Clubs Monthly Mini in November (date & course TBA).
You can also donate in person at Disc Nation, and Disc Nation will MATCH every donation that is made in their store. They did the same thing for the Searight renovations and it made a big difference. Thanks Damon! Thanks Disc Nation!!!
You can also mail a check or money order to the club: WDGC, PO Box 33531, Austin, TX, 78764 (payable to WDGC or Waterloo Disc Golf Club).
Thank you very much for your help and support as we continue to try and bring our existing courses up to excellent condition!

Heads Up Texas Disc Golfers, your help is needed, and quickly!
The City recently announced that they will be closing Pease Park Disc Golf Course by the end of the year. This announcement comes months after telling the community that the course would remain open until there was another course opened (possibly at Roy Guerrero Park) so that the other area courses are not drastically overused, drastically exaggerating environmental impact at every other area course. This was a complete lie. There will be no course at Roy G for many months, if ever. City officials strung us along, just to shut us up and announce their real intentions while the citizens were not paying attention. They did this on a Friday afternoon at 4:45 pm right before the short Thanksgiving week. Here is a link to the KXAN story on Friday
http://www.kxan.com/dpp/news/local/disc-golf-almost-done-at-pease-park-
The City also promised that they would work towards (or at least consider) reinstating some aspect of the course at Pease once the storm-water work is completed. Given that this information came from City officials, it is unclear what will be the final result, especially with their recent track record of inconsistent stories.
So, if you are interested in having future disc golf recreation in Austin, or are interested in simply having city officials which tell the truth and follow ethical protocol standards, PLEASE make yourselves heard. There is no chance that they will ever show the community respect if folks simply accept this as the way government works.

To widen the scope of your responses, here are the email addresses of the Mayor and Council, many of their aides, the Parks Dept. Director and 2 of the Assistant Directors, and the Austin Parks Board. ALL of these people need to hear about this from you, and they need to hear about it often. The groups opposed to Pease are getting to these influential members often and vocally, the disc golf community now needs to do the same.
The city is, at best, breaking their word about keeping the course open until a new course is completely installed and operating. This was a publicly stated commitment.

Just a reminder that tonight is an important public input meeting about the proposed disc golf course at the Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Park; Monday evening, November 29th
6:00 7:30 pm
Ruiz Branch Library
1600 Grove Road, 78741
And tomorrow night is the monthly Austin Parks Board meeting;
Tuesday evening, November 30th
6 pm at City Hall
301 W. 2nd Street
Boards and Commissions Room (Rm. 1101)
The opponents of this new course have marshaled their defenses and are putting a lot of pressure on the city council, parks department, and austin parks board; the same as the opponents of the Pease course have done.
We need good turnouts at both meetings and good pressure on these same institutions though emails and phone calls in order to balance out the negative information.
For the Parks Board meeting on Tuesday, the official agenda lists the disc golf part at a briefing by the city on the proposed disc golf course at the Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Park. I believe the public can also speak out about this project at this time because it is on the agenda. But in addition to that, they have a Public Comment period at the beginning of the meeting for people to speak about items not on the agenda. This is where we can talk about Pease.
Having a lot of supporters there both voicing concern for Pease as well as the need for Roy G. is important from a public input standpoint. If we dont speak up for what we want, well never get it.
Thanks!

Yes, closing date is either 12/31/2010 or 1/1/2011. I assume that the city won't work on new years and will take off early on new year's eve. So, the baskets will probably be gone at the crack of dawn on the 31st. :)

Closing Pease Park is a real sad news. This was my first disc golf park I ever played in Austin (back in 1992 I believe).
I will be driving from Tulsa to Austin tomorrow, hopefully the baskets will be there for one more round.

With all the frustrating events surrounding disc golf here in Austin lately, it is nice to finally have some good news.
The improvements to the Zilker course have begun!!!
The large limestone benches have already been installed on all 18 holes, and the new concrete tee boxes on the south side have been framed up and should be done pretty soon.
Fresh mulch will be put out this Saturday morning (9 am 1 pm) during the clubs workday, and more work is still ahead with stuff like paths, erosion controls, and other Circle C / Searight type features.
Later in the year, we hope to put in new tee signs. This will mark the first time there have been signs at the Zilker course since the late 80s or early 90s.
The work is being done through a partnership between the club and the Austin Parks & Rec. Dept. The has committed over $2000 to this project and the more we can raise, the sooner we can get it all done. The city is spending a lot on this course as well, through materials, equipment, and labor.
If you would like to make a donation to the project, you can mail it to the club at WDGC, PO Box 33531, Austin, TX, 78746 or you can donate in person at the Disc Nation store at 1218 W. Slaughter Lane (and if you do, they will match that donation dollar for dollar thanks Disc Nation!). You can also do it in person at the clubs Ice Bowl at Zilker on February 5th or at any of the clubs other minis and events.
If we end up with more than we need for Zilker, well spend the rest on Bartholomew :D
Thanks!

This story ran on KXAN (channel 36 / NBC affiliate) Saturday evening March 26th; an update on the Colorado River Park situation. Please watch it, comment on it, share it, etc.
It has been suggested that the more folks who click on it and the more people comment, the more current and relevant it will be/stay, keeping it more in view and hopefully encouraging the other media outlets to pick up on the story and run one themselves. It might also encourage KXAN to do more follow-ups.

The start time of the Waterloo Clubs weekly at Bartholomew is changing.
Beginning this Saturday, May 7th, the mini will start at 10 am.
It had been an afternoon mini, but summer is rapidly approaching so Phil is changing it to a morning mini. Should make for a much nicer round.
Thanks,

The city is going to start doing Master Planning work for Pease Park this year, maybe even starting as early as June, but we dont have any definite dates/locations yet. As soon as we do we will pass those along. We will need, NEED, big attendance and input at these city meetings to really push for disc golf going back into Pease once the creek work is done.
In the meantime though, one of the Pease improvement groups, Pease Park Conservancy, is having a Meet & Greet to talk about the master planning process. They want neighbors and park users to give their input on what they want to see in the Pease Master Plan. The groups website is: http://www.peasepark.org/ and they have a facebook page too http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pease-Park-Conservancy/111926615556330
This is a great event for disc golfers to show up to and voice our desire as park users, neighbors, and city residents, for disc golf to be included in the parks future.
Not in a confrontational way, but in a constructive, involved, This is what we want; this is what we think is important; this is why way.
We want and need to show that disc golf is still a desired and appropriate activity at Pease.

There is still a shred of hope that something might someday return. Maybe fewer holes. But given the mentality of a city whose biggest issue seems to be banning plastic bags, I hold little hope that rationality or accommodation is likely.
