Are you even going to worlds???
You better use your brain
cuz your drive must suck
teein' off on hole 1
peeps on 6 gotta duck
hit a career total of 3 putts
all 18 feet of luck
I could drive a truck
through those fairways
bigger than a great lake
you can't fake, take, or make
this ***** up for gods sake
I'm gonna rip up worlds
in 2 zero zero 4
then take your girl home
leave your seconds on the floor
sweat drippin from her pores
my jumbo marshmallow
overwhelming her smores
and the door is all
that you will be seein'
peein' in your pants
wantin' to be retrievin'
my 50 footers droppin in
from every possible angle
not runnin' circles around you
but your BOB on every rectangle

I guess you don't know the NC courses. Most of the guys do travel outside the state, but to play the challenging courses, we prefer to stay right at home. :) I have played all over the place since I often travel for work. I have yet to find an area that has the caliber of courses to rival NC. Granted, I have not been to MI....yet.

Hey pimp, let me let you in on a little secret real quick. First off i would like to say to all my NC boys how much i appreciate the props and such. But, my intentions at am worlds have nothing to do with what is said here on the board. I could not care less if i place 1st or DFL at am worlds. What i am looking forward to and i KNOW I WILL do there is have the best time of my life, playing a sport that i love and have played since i could read and write. Yes i will play my heart out and i would LOVE to place well, but it is not a main goal of mine to do so. So being that a few people think i am a favorite to win am worlds, let them think it, because it is not going to change my goal at AM worlds.

So, you like my stats, huh? Like I said I dont leave the state, I dont play many events(as you stated). As a matter of fact I run more events than I play in, but that is besides the point. The point is that NC will defeat MI at worlds, and I think it hurts your big juicy feelings :(.
Nobody tries to revolve around anyone in this state...we have too much great talent here...we help each other out and support one another, but I try to kick JJ's ***, Walt's ***, LL's ***, Schwebby's ***, and anybody else's *** that is in every tournament I play in. But I still love all those guys and many more. We ARE A FAMILY in this area.
I'm done with this thread...I'm just gonna pop-off in a month and show ya'll fools what's up.
thats what happens when u play a lot of events and have alot of bad rounds, it dropped due to winter golf but thats beside the point i can talk all i want because i acually play in tournies

ratings, as dumb as they are, are more accurate the more events you play.
and don't talk about one of the best TD's in this state like that. I am proud to say that Scott Knapp is a buddy of mine. He plays for pure love and enjoyment of the game, which is more important than any number that represents a skill level.

Sorry Westa , but haters get what they deserve. This was a simple (what I assumed friendly) trash talk between NC and MI. Then you had to call my PR out. Your right I dont have a high PR, but niether do you. And obviously (based on your comment to me) the Player rating means alot to you. But it means little to me. As a matter of fact until you said something, I didnt even know that was my player rating. But, its all good you had to respond to my comments the way you did, because the fact of the matter is, that you know Team NC will use and abuse you and your boyz from MI. Now, do I have to put a smiley face at the end of this to let remind you that this is friendly trash talk between two states, or are you gonna find out my ping pong players rating and post that on this board too.
oh wait I almost forgot.... :)

I can talk all the trash I want, because I actually RUN tournies.
Ive got a hanky for you here if you really need. I hadent realized retaliating to your original remark, that you and your NC girls would cry like this, had I known that I might have said nothing. probaly not though, man I aint sweatn over "my" MI boys, im not even technically a Michigander to be honest, but i do know some of them that are going to Worlds, and I know that they have as good as shot as any, well a COUPLE of them do anyways. I dont know that I've seen and NCers play so I cant really say, all i know is that anyone from any state can rip it up all week, just as long as its not another Texan. And no the player rating doesnt mean shizzle to me, if you ask me the ranking system needs to be revamped, all i was sayn in my original comment was that you, who hasent even played an event this year, and has a poor PR (like myself) cant talk smack unless you acually play. Good for you that youre running tournies, I plan on becoming a TD this year, and I'll even play in the events that i run. But when it all boils down, who cares?? I still have poker every Thursday, and I really dont give a rats [*****] what any of you guys say about me. ( oh bye the way heres my smily face) :)

Well it is kind of hard to qualify where there is competition.
NC has only one qualifier, and you have to finish top three in that tournament to qualify. And top three in NC is never easy.
Does anyone know when they do the rating based invites?

Well if your state wasnt filled with sandbaggers as i said earlier it would be a little easier.
Dont think its a joke to finish in the top 3 in MI either.

Well it all depends on how many people make the Semis and Finals but both states should each have 5 in the top 72. So we should do top 8 threw friday and then bump it down to the top 5 or maybe even 3 in the semis and finals.
If that doesnt happen we will have to refigure. Or do you just want to say whoever gets into the Semis and finals with the most players and then do scores from there???
i still say top 5, but im down with doing total score. how do you propose we do total score with semis and finals involved?

Just do the scores without the semis. There should be already enough rounds to prove who is better. Besides, whoever has the most in the semis is probably going to win anyways.

Through my travels I've noticed there are just as many HICKS in MI as there are in NC. The same in every state. Just because we have a southern drawl does'nt mean we have more hicks. At least our accent matches your decription. Threre are few things funnier than a hick with a northern accent. OOOH NOOO!
As far as sanbaggers, MI and NC alike will never live down the likes of Jamie Letts and Chris Lee, two of the biggest sanbaggers of all time. They are every where.
I think it's a good idea to play in a few big open tourneys as an AM and turn down money if they cash and they should cash because it's their home course. They do it for the experience to help them out further down the road when they do step up.
It's going to be fun to to see how the worlds turns out. I love Michigan golf and the golf scene is truly one of the strongest ever. The MI parks are unbelievable. It's no wonder you have such good golfers.
I love and miss NC golf alot. We've done well considering the land we're alotted to build courses. Carlton Howerd, Alen Bever, Stan McDaniel. I think when it's over, the MI player with the lowest score will not be good enough to beat the NC golfer with the lowest score.
As far as total finishes of players will be hard to determine. I do expect more MI golfers to attend due to the location of the worlds.
Go Get Em NC Boys and Belles.

Well then Robert, explain what ratings mean. Please?
It's like showing someone a picture of you when you were younger. All pictures are of you when you are younger. Ratings are a picture of your past performance. They have nothing to do with how you will shoot tomorrow. Come on college boy, use your noodle.

We have hosted a worlds (97) Thats great, was it a combined Pro Am and Junior Worlds like the one we had in 2000??? We do USDGC (in SC, but only 30 min from Charlotte) You already said it. Thats NOT in NC
Charlotte has 2 of Climo's and most peoples favorite courses (Renny and Hornets Nest) We have the Tobaggon
We host a National Tour (Dogwood Crosstown) and 28 other PDGA events (29 next year) Thats Great We host the DGLO NT (which is one of Climo and most peoples Favorite Tournament) and 38 PDGA events this year. Plus we are home of the best AM Tournament in the World USADGC.
Based on the last ratings update, we have the top rated amatuer in the country (Justin Jernigan) Who is a SANDBAGGER but i will admit you have some very cool and skilled pros out of NC
Comparisons:
Michigans Number One Pros Rating - 1015 (Scott Martin) Has a full time job

I think he handled the pressure of the USDGC just fine.
This is all getting a little bit ridiculous. He's in HIGH SCHOOL and wants a chance at a title. He could have racked up hundreds of dollars woth of platic the past year but instead donated(while cashing nonetheless) in a state that is full of top-rated pros. What's so wrong with that? I'd also like to point out that he hasn't been talking any smack at all.

According to the newest registration update, NC has 18 players, and MI has 19. I say we go with the top 15.
NC avg. rating - 925.6
MI avg. rating - 927.6
Looks like a good battle shaping up. It should be fun.
Since NC and MI are both being arrogant about being the best state out 50, I thought I would see how everyone stacks up. Below is the average rating(rounded) by states with atleast 10 registered players.
(# of players)
MI - 928 (19)
NC - 926 (18)
IL - 924 (21)
MN - 916 (10)
CA - 913 (24)
IA - 908 (34)
TX - 908 (12)
Looks like we have the right to be alittle arrogant :)
OR(8) at 942 and IN(6) at 930 are the 2 highest averages but both have less than 10.

Yo, Jody, I got an Orc that you lost at Richlands its in my truck, and if you ever see Bert Williams, tell him I got a monster that belongs to him too.
JJ is not a sandbagger!
His story is: He has been playing since he was a little boy, his family has a private course on their property. As he grew up, he did not play tournaments and was'nt involved in the scene until last year when he took 21st place at th USDGC which was his SECOND PDGA event EVER! He has never had a chance to play in the Am Worlds. So he decided to play advanced through the 2004 year until the Worlds, and mabey till the end of the season depending on his goals.
A "sandbagger" is someone who stays amature for a long time while dominating the division. This is his first full year as an advanced tourney player so its not his fault he's good. He should not have to go pro just becouse he got good fast. Everyone is entitled to 1 full year of domination. If he were to place well at the worlds an remain amature then he would be a sandbagger next year, but he is'nt going to so quit trying to put a false title on him.
Who else do you think are Sandbaggers in NC? Give me some names and I'll defend them too, because most of the time the Ams move up in NC when it's the right time.

Sidearms / S Curves - #1 Helix - thank god it has a flight path picture on it so you learn what an S curve looks like.
Midrange - Probably the stratus - for all those big arms
Putter - Rubber Putter - after all those airballs, thank god it floats!

Connors, I don't understand why you think someone who has played in amateur for just a year should move up to pro before he gets a chance to play in Am Worlds. If this player that everyone's talking about wins Am Worlds or places well (or even if he doesn't), it sounds like he's moving up to pro anyway, so your problem with him is completely made up in your mind.
Finally, this arbitrary rule of yours, everyone above 980 in Am is a bagger, doesn't make sense. Are you saying no one in Am is allowed to be good? Even for a short time?

Whatever Paul,
You neeed to read up more...I have given JJ his props. N.C. has been hyping this guy up for months, and Robert has virtually guaranteed a win out of him.
I'm not sure what it's like where you come from but in Oklahoma we call out baggers, even if he's 16!
The system we currently have does not push players into moving up. Tell me how some players get away with playing novice/intermediate there whole lives, BECAUSE NO ONE CALLS THEM OUT? Sandbagging will always be an issue in golf, hopefully one day the PDGA can develop a better system...(BTW: I love the PDGA, they are doing great)
Jernigan could have made some good $$$ this summer playing pro :o:o:o most ams would not have been able to do that. Like I have stated before, I don't have a problem having a favorite to win worlds. But it's hard to ignore a bagger when you see one, atleast for me.
gnduke
Jul 27 2004, 12:03 PM
If a player can't get above the ratings requirements for Novice or AM their entire life, they are welcome to compete there. It is unlikely that they will be dominating those divisions unless everyone else is playing above their ratings. In which case all those other players that are complaining should move back down where they belong or quit complaining.
And I don't believe that anyone should be forced to go PRO with less than a full year's experience and one opportunity to go to Worlds.

There will definately be some stiff comp at the D competition, I wonder what it will take to win.
Guys i have to break in here and defend my own. First i want to say I have met some great golfers from Michigan, Texas, etc.
I have known JJ for 3/4 's of his life, I can remember him at age six or seven parking shots and draining putts, and watching him grow as a golfer and a person. I always knew if he wanted to be a great golfer he would be(so i beat him while I could). I hope those who post on this board get to play with him so you can find out how great of a person JJ is. JJ will not talk smack, will support the group that he is playing with no matter how bad a round he is having( and yes once in a blue moon he has them) and is just plain courteous. I have seen people have a pre-concieved idea of JJ and then play with him and realize they are totally wrong. It's funny but i believe everyone else (from this area)wants JJ to win more than he does. He has stated time and time again he just wants to play well and have fun and he will.
As for the sandbaggin idea. Why is it when someone starts to play consistantly well there called a sandbagger. Was tiger woods a sandbagger playin in pga events in college? I want to play with all the sandbaggers because the competition improves my game. Lets face it a lot(not all) of golfers want people to move up so their chances of winning are improved. Let me finish by saying I hope everyone plays well in Iowa and return safely to their homes. I pulling for JJ not to make NC look good or to say "I told you so" but because he deserves it.
.

Jul 28 2004, 12:10 AM
JJ is doing the right thing by playing in pro events and declining. I noticed Todd Branch's sandbagger award in the mag for David Shaw. Anyone that wins 9 tournaments and is still playing Adv. the next year is taking advantage of the system. A good way to spot a real bagger is if they win the same tournament out of town 2 years in a row over good competition.
cbdiscpimp
Jul 28 2004, 12:44 AM
I hope i get to play with him also. I just like talking smack. I have no pre concieved thought about who JJ is as a person. Hes a great golfer and all great am golfers get called SANDBAGGERS. Hell i have been at PRO tournies where they call the WINNER a SANDBAGGER. Its just a term that basically says would you please move up and stop kicking my [*****]. I hope everyone plays their best down there and i hope everyone has fun. Im PUMPED to be off work and golfing for 10 days and i cant wait to meet all the guys ive been talking smack to and see if they really are as good as they say they are. See you all in Iowa and GOOD LUCK
I feel the same way. I think it will just be fun to meet some of the guys, and just be away from the daily grind for a week. Hell, maybe I can make a few putts and cash, but if I don't, I'm sure it will still be a blast. Having said that, I'm not much of a talker, but I still want Team NC to whoop dat *****. :D

Good answer. Just let your game do the talking in Iowa. Please continue to not get sucked into this trash talk.
J
Some friends of mine have a "Beat the Christmas Rush" party every year in October and they always have t-shirts made up with some variation of the "The Grinch That Stole Christmas" on the shirts. With all the smack talking on the MI vs NC thread, I though some of you might like to see the shirt they did in 1993....

There's only one team in North Carolina..... and that's the University of North Carolina Tarheels.
I dont think Chris Webber will EVER live that down, on the lighter side, the Pistons DID win it all this year, howd your NC team do again???

yeah and Rasheed was exactly waht yall needed to win it all.
Pretty sure he went to UNC.
I don't know why people still bring up that time out thing - remember, Michigan bought thier fab 5 - those games and banners have been erased from College Sports history

I didn't realize how sensative you NC boys are. Am I mistaken or is this a smack talk thread? I guess I am used to talkin smack with Tejas they seem to have thicker hides.
Lets be clear though he won 4 and came in second 4 times last year. Plus the PDGA says he won $298 last year as a pro so I really don't see how he is still an am. Im sure he is a nice guy and personaly I would like to play a casual round before hand with any of you NC ams. Since I am a lowly 954 pro maby we could play some $5.00 hot rounds on friday or saturday. Lets have fun which is what I thought this thread was about.

I was happy to see the Pistons win it this year....... and I believe the "Tarheel connection" (Larry Brown & Rasheed Wallace)..... helped bring home the gold.
Guess that's an example of NC & MI working together
We don't mind the sandbagger part so much.

So are the Am Masters part of this discussion? -- for many of us Michigan Am Masters, this tournament is the only 1 where we play in the Am Master division. Most of us compete in the Am1 otherwise and we often do quite well competing against the young guys with the big arms.

You know what... that's a great idea. I was just checking out the updated points stats for both of our states. I was looking to see how many from each state, and from each division, were on the front page in points. Looks like we both have quite a few players on tour. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Here are the results:
<html>
<table border>
<tr><td>State</td><td>MA1</td><td>FW1</td><td>MPO</td><td>FPO</td><td>MPM</td><td>MM1</td><td>Total</td></tr>
<tr><td>NC</td><td>11</td><td>4</td><td>6</td><td>4</td><td>3</td><td>4</td><td>32</td></tr>
<tr><td>MI</td><td>12</td><td>2</td><td>3</td><td>2</td><td>4</td><td>7</td><td>30</td></tr>
</table>
</html>
Pretty close huh? I say since we are trying to find the best OVERALL disc golf state... in addition to taking the top 8 adv scores, we also take the top players from each state in every other "major" division. By "major" I mean basically the divisions I listed in the table. I believe this will be a more accurate test to see which state is truely DOMINANT . That is, unless MI is scaaaaaared!
NC says BRING IT! :D
OK, ya' all know the rules. keep your guard up at all times, no head butting or biteing. now touch gloves and good luck.
LET'S GET IT ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A little competition is always healthy, I say, but I do have a little issue with residency. I think the Am side is fine, most if not all of us have been from our respective states for a while. The pro side, however, is murkier.
On the NC side, we have Cam Todd and Lesli Herndon, who I thought were from GA and AL - how long have they lived in NC?
On the MI side, 1 of our best pros (Dave Feldberg) moved to OR recently for school but his game was born and raised right here in MI. For that matter, Ron Russell built his game right here in MI, stays here during the warmer months when not touring, and still plays in our state finals every year even though it is a B tier. These guys have been part of the MI disc golf scene for years even if their residency is listed elsewhere.

I'm sure I speak for the rest of NC when I say we don't need Cam and Lesli. They've lived here for less than a year. I'm sure they moved here because NC DG rocks! You can have Feldberg and Russell if you're gonna b itch about it. We ain't scared! Its still gonna be ugly for ya! I knew someone would complain about the pros. This is why we'll only take the top score in the other divisions. The am side is going to be the majority of the score anyway. Satisfied? :D Anyone else? NC or MI speak up!

cbdiscpimp

Usually buy in for about 10 bucks and play tournament style. Depending on how many players there are you usually pay the top 2 or three spots. Last cash usually gets there money back. All we play is No Limit Texas Hold em.

Sorry Jake. Let's stick to the major divisions. We don't want to rub it in TOO bad. I mean we can also do legends (which NC wins EVERY year) and Grandmasters with Alan Beaver. It's already going to be ugly. :p
your right it will be ugly for you guys in iowa.
Other states are welcomed to join if they think they can hang. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Okies are not scared bro, it's just that we don't have as many golfers attending...we already lost arguably the best advanced AM in the nation to the Open division, and he's not even showing up to play Pro. Like other states some of our best are not attending -HOWEVER- I think there are some OKIES that will place higher in certain divisions over team MI and NC
I can pretty much guarantee the AM distance champ will come from Tulsa...willing to take bets on that? anyone, anyone?

We are just letting you guys do all the talking.
i wont make any guarantees where they come from except the distance winner will be over 500'
thats fine we will be getting all the birdies also
The D is just gonna depend on who is on that day. VERY few people can throw 500 consistently. I'm sure there will be some guys that can throw 500, but whether or not they do it that day remains to be seen. I'm sure the winner will be close though.

Distance is fluky. Depends on the winds. Maybe my leftiness will be an advantage. Thing is, there's not a lot of folk in the distance thing, and I would be surprised if ANYONE throws 500. I saw Zak Walker? (AZ) throwing 500 sidearm at Am Nats last year, that was sick. I have a good arm and hope I get a few good shots off.
This is my first worlds, what is the format for distance? How many throws? what kind of time constraints?

Whatever the format, time shouldn't be a factor. You have more than enough time to throw each and every one of your tries.

usually 5 or 6 throws, but they could always change the format to fit their needs.
