NC takes out MI in distance, and has already claimed a world title.

Steve Mills, aka cbdiscpimp, was the last qualifier for the distance finals until I walked up and threw a 504 foot drive takin him out!

9 yr. old Dave Wiggins Jr. won his first of probably a few world titles this week as he drove around 220 feet to take home the under 10 distance championship.

Michigan won adv. master distance though

and another quote from JJ.

Hey pimp, let me let you in on a little secret real quick. First off i would like to say to all my NC boys how much i appreciate the props and such. But, my intentions at am worlds have nothing to do with what is said here on the board. I could not care less if i place 1st or DFL at am worlds. What i am looking forward to and i KNOW I WILL do there is have the best time of my life, playing a sport that i love and have played since i could read and write. Yes i will play my heart out and i would LOVE to place well, but it is not a main goal of mine to do so. So being that a few people think i am a favorite to win am worlds, let them think it, because it is not going to change my goal at AM worlds

JJ is having fun. Not saying a word. Has great sportsmanship as well. Looks like the future of disc golf is here in NC. We should follow their lead and just throw.

So what are the final results of Team NC vs. Team MI? Will someone please tabulate the results and let us know?

dave_marchant
Aug 14 2004, 12:37 PM
Here is what I did:
1) I listed out the top 60 players from both MI & NC from PDGA.com's Player Rating page.
2) I manually went through the players from the Worlds listings and figured out who was from NC & MI. It is possible I made some ommissions and mistakes, so please check for accuracy. I will fix and re-post if necessary
3) I sorted by place of finish and added both Finish Place (end of Friday) and Total Score.

You can easily see who won by place or total score for the top 4, top 6, or any amount you want up to 13 places.

So, as you see, If you take the top 4 by score, NC wins by 3 strokes.
If you take top 5, MI wins by 3.
Top 8 (as suggested earlier), MI wins by 16 strokes!

Things look even better for MI if you go by cumulative finish place.

I'll let someone else announce the winner, but as an NC'er, I hate to say that someone else is the DG Capitol of the World!

Congrats to MI!!

Of course, this may need to be edited if I made any mistakes.

FINAL TERMS for Team MI vs Team NC:

All rounds will be totaled before semis and finals.

MA1 - Top 8 from each state.
MM1 - Top 1 from each state.
FW1 - Top 1 from each state.
MPO - Top 1 from each state including David Feldberg and Ron Russell on MI and not including Cam Todd for NC.
FPO - Top 1 from each state not including Lesli Herndon for NC.
MPM - Top 1 from each state.
MJ1 - Top 1 from each state. -- Sorry Caleb!

Lowest total score determines the best overall DG state B ITCHES! Side bets are optional. Other states are welcomed to join if they think they can hang. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

But does it matter?

You forgot Scott Slater(MA1), because he is a junior. I think he's a few places behind Romine.

Aug 14 2004, 03:19 PM
You are missing 9th place after 8 rounds at + 13 Scott Slater
from Livonia, Michigan he may not show because he is a junior playing AM1. Also in 130th place at +49 is Jamie Mosier he is also a junior playing AM1. Those 2 are just the obvious omissions, I would need to really look closer to see if you missed anyone else.

You're right. For some reason his name did not show up in the Player Rating search. He is registered as M1J (Junior) - maybe that is why he didn't show up.

Do you see any other mistakes/oversights? Your input about Scott will certainly make a difference.

I do not want to recompute and repost repeatedly with every piece of input. I will wait until all feedback is gotten. I maybe will not update again at all. The reason I say that is that all the fun surrounding this trash talking thread was in laying claim to which state could claim DG world dominance. It is pretty clear that it is close to a dead heat - no dominance any way you cut it (only 0.15% differential!). So, this might have to be settled next year.

Congrats to both NC &amp; MI for helping to make this a very entertaining event for us unfortunate souls who had to follow the action from our PC's.

Is there any quick way to find out who all the players from NC and MI are? Is there any website that has all of the Worlds players listed by state?

dave_marchant
Aug 15 2004, 09:30 AM
Hi Lowe,

I can not find an easy way to do that either. Before the tournament starts the registration list shows that info, but for some reason that is not included anywhere else.

The only way I could figure out how to get a player's/member's state is by doing a lot of painstaking manual work - either typing in their name into the 'member search' feature or by sorting by state in the 'player ratings' feature (both found under the 'membership' tab above or below).

I have not done any magic, just a bunch of work that anyone else can easily do (if they feel like spending the time).

Thanks,
dave...

Congratulations to both team MI and NC for keeping it together, and showing the world how great disc golfers are from these states. From what I here, there was no bloodshed, although if you have seen MTL without his shirt on, or in his pink panties, things may have been different. A great job to all. Salute.

PS: Can we get a shoutout to Dave M. for "working" the stats so that we have the information for future smack talking. Thanks Dave!

Man, I gotta say that it has been an absolute blast reading and watching and rooting and living vicariously thru you cats.
My advice would be screw all the stats unless there's some crazy bad blood or a large side wager, (and that doesn't mean I don't really appreciate the stat crunchin', 'cos that is just cool to have it up so soon), and call it a draw and the beginning of a great friendly rivalry (read again friendly). I wish so bad that my game had been in good enough shape to join all of you!!! (I have been playing a heck of alot these last couple weeks and even got my 1st ace in like 2+ years last week). I'm using a different approach and you can make of it what you will. (I bet the loser will find some reason to howl.) I'm looking at the finishing place of all players in all divisions: Pro, Am, & Junior. Each person gets points according to the number of people that they beat, so the more people in a division the higher possible points. The only restriction is taking only the top 10 finishers in: Male Pro Open (MPO), Male Pro Masters (MPM), and Male Am Adv (MA1) because these pools are so large.

I've got the lists of invited players and will check by state then match them with the results, but it will take a while.

The biggest problem is that there are other players who aren't on the invited list, but that's the best I can do.

I've already finished all of the Juniors using this method.

It will take a while to compile and my time is very limited, but I'll keep you informed.

Here are the final results of where all of the MI and NC players finished in all divisions. It will be a whompin' big table.

Please let me know of any omissions or corrections. There may be people I missed who played, but weren't on the Qualifiers list.

Sorry for the bad news NC. (I'll confess that I thought about just not posting any results and forgetting the whole thing. I guess my sin nature is still at work . :p)

Note:
-Points are awarded for how many players they beat.
-Points are awarded by number of finishers, not total entrants, so players who didn't finish are not included in the points calculations.
-Because it is easier to drive to Iowa from Michigan than from NC there were probably more players from MI who attended the Worlds. Therefore I made a concession to the NC team. In the Mens Pro Open, Men's Adv. Division, and Mens Adv. Masters I only counted the top number of MI players that equaled the number of NC players.
-Last place gets 1 point.
-I didn't check for ties because that is too tedious.
-NC does not include MPO Cam Todd, FPO Lesli Herndon
-MI does not include MPO Ron Russell (FL)
-MI does include MPO Dave Feldberg

Here are a few more facts that may be relevant to an analysis of which is the best DG state:

The Number of Qualifiers and Players in 2004 Worlds:
<table border="1"><tr><td>Division</td><td>MI Qualified</td><td>MI Played</td><td>MI Play/Qual</td><td>NC Qualified</td><td>NC Played</td><td>NC Play/ Qual
</td></tr><tr><td>Pro</td><td>31</td><td>13</td><td>42%</td><td>32</td><td>12</td><td>38%
</td></tr><tr><td>Am</td><td>68</td><td>37</td><td>54%</td><td>59</td><td>24</td><td>41%
</td></tr><tr><td>Junior</td><td>21</td><td>8</td><td>38%</td><td>9</td><td>2</td><td>22%
</td></tr><tr><td>Total</td><td>120</td><td>58</td><td>48%</td><td>100</td><td>38</td><td>38%
</td></tr><tr><td></tr></td></table>

Analysis:
MI had more people qualify than NC and a higher percentage of these acutally played. The biggest difference was in the AM division and that's where MI scored their most points. Since it's easier to drive to Iowa from MI than from NC that may have had a lot to do with the higher MI turnout.

Other State Facts
<table border="1"><tr><td>State facts</td><td>MI</td><td>NC
</td></tr><tr><td>Number of Courses in the PDGA Directory</td><td>63</td><td>53
</td></tr><tr><td>State Population, estimated 2003 (in millions)</td><td>10.1</td><td>8.4

</td></tr><tr><td>Courses per 1000 sq. mi.</td><td>1.11</td><td>1.09
</td></tr><tr><td> </tr></td></table>

Analysis:
The 2 states are almost identical in the number of courses per capita and in the number of courses per 1000 sq. miles. Obvioulsy DG is thriving in both areas!

I think this is a close rivalry!

A little more analysis:

If you took just the very top Male Pros --- the top 4 Open and top 2 Masters -- then NC would have won the Pro division:

<table border="1"><tr><td>Division</td><td>MI </td><td>NC
</td></tr><tr><td>Pro Open - MPO (Top 4)</td><td>512</td><td>519
</td></tr><tr><td>Pro Masters- MPM (Top 2)</td><td>144</td><td>149
</td></tr><tr><td> </tr></td></table>

And of course NC beat MI in Male Grandmasters and Legends as well, but these were very small fields so they didn't earn many points.

I hate to bring bad news to NC, but MI made most of their points in the Male Adv. and Male Adv. Masters divisions. They had very strong finishes as a team. Except for JJ the MI Adv. team finished consistently higher.

Great job of putting together the stats...... BUT to clarify, your analysis is not based on the "rules" as set forth in the original wager/challenge/contest..... but on rules made up after the event was completed. The results may not be any different though, but I would like to see the real results... :)

Actually I think Wisconsin took it:

Barry Schultz - 1st
Keith Warren - 5th
Aaron Wield - 8th
Chris Heeren - 15th

And that is just the top 15 in Open.

You can prove anything with statisitics. In the olympics they only count the medals towards national standings. That is the first three places. It doesn't matter how many entrants there are in a field. There is some logic to this approach as some self-selection is involved so that in divisions where people have to hold down full time jobs and have families, etc. there will be less entrants because those less competitive for the win simply won't show. That by no means indicates that the winners would have not done the same had the field been larger. My belief is that the reality lies somewhere between these two extremes, but the correction factor would be impossible to determine with any accuracy. In other words, the way points were assigned in the above table takes one exteme position which almost certainly greatly differs from the reality of the situation, that reality being impossible to determine. Additionally, I think most would agree that the top 3 in a field of 200+ is significantly better than anything below that - ie. 1st place is much more significant than 4th place not simply1 to 2 percent better as in the above table.

Conclusion: You can prove anything with statistics - believe what you want. For me, NC was the most represented in the 1st three places of any state (I think) Be it the Olympics, the Tour De France, World Championships in almost all sports, those are the places that count the most.

I'll correct myself. MI had more top three places (8 to 7) largely due to the junior girls divisions under 16 which gave them 5 top 3 places. MI is clearly a superior disc golf state - for adolescent girls! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

One last thought - The tournament directors make a sort of correction factor for the variables I described in my prior posts - it is called the prize list. I think the PGA does it that way. For someone interested, they could add up the prize lists of MI vs NC to determine the TD's perspective on things....I don't care to do it! :)

There is a major controversy at the 2004 Worlds. The courses degree of difficulty were grossly miscalculated for my rounds only, giving me the tie for 2nd with Kenny. An investigation into this has ensued, and Climo has already conceeded part of his winnings to me.

Talk amongst yourselves...
