The club will be doing a weekly mini starting (probably) on Thursday April 7th.
actually Gordo I think we should wait until the following thursday. the city is heading out with heavy equipment thurday and friday (7th and 8th). dan and i will be directing them to place granite and road base all over the course so we can have a work day saturday the 9th focusing on finishing boxes and cleaning up fairways. if we try to have a mini the course could be a mess. plus i'd rather wait until after the work day so we can have nice tee boxes and get some of the crap, stumps, stuff out of the fairways.
just my buffalo nickel.....

pat runs the mini on sunday at 10.
gordo, you thinking of playing 18 or all 21?
we're discussing doing flex time from approx. 4-5:30 ish. the course plays long and shotgun start would be a pain, sending people out to holes and all.... we shall see how it works. this way people can play with 3 or 4 on a card with the same division, start early if they'd like, stick around to see how they finished, or collect their winnings the next week. the weeks i run it i will probably even try to get out there around 3:30 if people want to start that early. i imagine come mid summer people will be teeing off as late as 6 - 6:15 and finishing in the 9pm texas sunset.
something new, we'll see if it works.......

FUN course thanks to ALL that have put in the hours to make this course worth the drive south. Couple suggestions. Can you mark the flight to the holes on each tee sign (this will speed up play) so you are not guessing which way to throw? you could use a sharpie for now. Also # 21 has way to many dead limb and crap in the middle of the fairway. was this fairway the staging area for TRASH?? Love the practice baskets. Shot +9 first time seeing the course. THANKS AGAIN!!

To our surprise the city is supplying us with a mulcher and crew Thursday and Friday. Which means we will need a lot of wheel barrels (maybe someone with a riding lawnmower/tractor and trailer) to move mulch around on Saturday. As always, loppers, chainsaws to cut stumps, pick axes, shovels, basically the works........ beer and pizza never hurt either.
thanks in advance, cause i know you all are coming...............

We distributed a lot of material to the boxes today. It will all be spread by tomorrow. What would really help is if anyone has access to some type of tamper (s) to pack down the crushed granite and sandy loam. We will also need some more 5 gallon buckets to transport material to 8,9, 11(just a bit) tee boxes.

Dan and crew,
I love the concept of hole #21. It is a great finisher...BUT! It disrupts the flow of the course. The wait time averages 10 minutes on a busy day. Many golfers have found the short cut (up and over the trees) but it is a BLIND shot. Lots of time is wasted looking for errant 2nd throws. Even good throws are sometimes hard to find due to not being able to see where the landing area is.
Is there a possibility of making TWO holes out of that one without taking away the "great finishing hole" that it was designed to do? The many discussions I have heard is replacing the basket that was original 21 and making a tee box near where the basket sat out in the open field or the "old 17" tee box. The integrety of the tunnel shot would still remain, it would not conflict with the jogging trail and it would flow much better.
Please accept this as positive input as my intention is not to criticize the final hole layout.
kingrat6931
Apr 17 2005, 07:27 AM
Also..are we to presume that since we have nice, shiny new PARD trash cans that PARD is going to pick up the trash from the holes or must I still go early Sunday mornings and "sneak" onto the course to empty them? (you know what I mean by "sneak")
Is there a pass that can be had that would allow a truck onto the course for trash purposes only? I wouldn't mind doing a trash run if I had "legal" access.

Apr 17 2005, 07:55 PM
I have yet to have to wait on hole 21. Usually there is no one there no matter what time of day I have arrived at 21. The major back up holes seem to be 5 and 6. As far as people laying up short then losing their shots... well, looks like they threw a bad shot, or needed a spotter. People keep saying that the hole is made easier because they lay up and throw over the top, etc. Yet everytime I play that hole with people that lay up and throw over the top I never see better than a 5 or worse.
Pretty much after the first six holes the only holes I look forward to playing are 14, 16 and 21. I've now 4'd hole 21 twice, and missed two putts for 4. I never really had to throw an amazing shot to get those putts, except for maybe one time. I've played 18-20 rounds now on the new setup and scored from 4-8 on that hole, which is what keeps me coming back. I think if people would quit whining (which is mostly what I hear) and accept a challenge, they would enjoy the hole more. Actually, it's mainly the same 4 or 5 people whining about this hole. Most people tend to enjoy it...........but, a hole like that is always going to garner a lot of different opinions. The hole didn't turn out exactly like I wanted it to, but it's pretty close. With some brush cleanup, stump removal, and grooming I think the hole will continue to play better.
kingrat6931
Apr 17 2005, 11:26 PM
That's odd...of all the golfers I've played with, I've not heard anyone "whining" about #21. I've heard alot of constructive critisism...and a few cuss words, but that's natural for such an extreme hole! And it comes from more than "4 or 5 people", both amatuer and pro.
I enjoy it as it is, but to make two holes out of that one would be even better!
just my opinion.....

Please don't take my post as complaining, I was just offering an opinion.
Hole 21 is very challanging, and when I take the time to drive down south I enjoy playing it.
It's kicked my @ss 3 of the 4 four times I've played it. My score would look better spread over two holes.
Thank's for all the work you have and are doing to the course.
james_mccaine
Apr 18 2005, 10:57 AM
What the hell does PWB stand for? I've only played the hole once and I can see Rick's point since we were looking for Hick's second shot over the trees. I don't have a good enough picture in my mind about the thickness of those trees, but is it possible to thin them enough so that people could see where their disc lands in the field?
At any rate, it's a great hole and we have very few of them in Austin. Therefore, I'm not sure waiting is sufficient reason to change it. Besides playing the last part of that hole as a par 3 would be kind of dull. The placement of the creek works for the long hole, but the creek location makes little sense if it was just a par 3 tunnel shot.

Apr 18 2005, 11:54 AM
rick thanks for your input and all the hard work you have done out there. not sure the cities plan with the trash cans. the pard lady told me before the last workday that we needed to talk about trash colection and how we can make it work, thier crews could not make it out to all the tee areas and we would need a compromise or plan to get it to some central areas. since then she has placed cans on each hole and as far as i know they will be maintaining them. will have to wait and see how it goes.
#21 does tend to seperate the wheat from the chaf so to speak, does it not? another product of a demonic mind. can anyone get olse a real job???

finally made it out there, played behind the waterloo mini....shoot 62 :D
I like the course and there sure has been a lot of HARD work out there. And lots more that can be done....well done fellers.
And as far as #21 ....I worm burned a shot to the gap and ended up throwing a sky roller over the top. It put me in the center of the field with a straight shot to the hole....got a 4. But a short shot up the middle and thumber or sky roller next, makes the hole not very hard.I really like the last 350' of that hole. Too bad that can't be hole 22. IMO hole21 is an ok finishing hole. THIS NOT A WHINE MR.OLSE, SO DON'T START ! You all have done a good thing out there and I understand your passion for the work you have done. By far the best course in AUSTIN.

I have now played the new layout 4 times and I think it takes atleast that many round to have a good visualization of hole 21. People will start to know where that over the top 2nd shot lands on 21 after they have played it more. Also as far as cleanup, I am sure the course will still be tweaked and some trees removed, but better to leave them at first cause you can't put the trees back that you have cut down :D. Vinnie that 62 is sick( I almost don't believe it ). Anyway, this course makes the beast seem easy.

I agree with you, James. Wait time really isn't sufficient. My statement related to those players who aren't as talented as some of you guys. If some of the trees and underbrush could be trimmed to allow visual on the "over the trees" shot, it would probably solve the problem. #21 should remain a par 5. We just need to be able to see a bit better.

Over the next 2-4 months, PARD will install concrete teeboxes, tee signs, benches, trash cans, and new baskets. They will also be doing some trimming and clearing. The Circle C Disc Golf Course in Austin is now open for play again!!!
While the project is not completely finished, it is close enough to get the course back in and to get players out there enjoying it. The new tee signs probably wont be installed until next week (but they will be great), and there will be some small on-going projects out there for about the next month.
The Circle C re-opening is the culmination of years of work by Waterloo Disc Golf Club to get major improvements made on our disc golf courses. We hope, and expect, that this is just the beginning.
This project includes:
* A great partnership between Waterloo Disc Golf Club and City of Austin Parks & Recreation.
* The biggest investment by the city in disc golf since the early 1990s.
* Hundreds of volunteer hours put in by the club and its members, and over $6,000 of the club's money spent on the improvements.
* A re-designed course, now 18 holes, with short and long tee pads on many of the holes.
* Concrete tee pads and awesome tee signs on both the short and long positions.
The Club sends HUGE THANKS out to Mike Olse, Dan Mueller, Mike Graham, Josh Rippie, and all the other fantastic volunteers and workers who made this all happen; and to Disc Nation and Houck Design for their great support as well!
For questions about this project, please contact Dan Mueller at (512) 293-7592.

Disc Nation has a map on their site. I don't think anyone has taken pictures yet. I'll see if I can't get the distances from Mike Olse later.

3 baskets should be missing since the course went from 21 to 18 holes. ;)
I played 18 holes on Sat morning. All 18 plus the 2 pracitce baskets were there then. I haven't heard anything about missing baskets until reading your post.

The Circle C tee signs are now in!!!
And to help us raise money to pay for these awesome signs and other Circle C improvements, Disc Nation is sponsoring a Waterloo Club mini there on Saturday morning, May 23rd. $10 entry per person for all divisions; and ALL the payout for all the divisions is in Disc Nation Bucks, redeemable just down the road at the Disc Nation Superstore where you will have a huge selection of discs and other merchandise to choose from. Just to be clear, even the pros will be paid in Disc Nation Bucks.
One lucky player will walk away with one of the old Circle C baskets as a door prize.
Sign up starts at 9:30 am, the round start at 10:00 am

There have been two events out there now, the Waterloo Club's fundraiser mini sponsored by Disc Nation on 5/23/09 and the Club's "1st Saturday" mini on 6/6/09.
The best rounds on the new layout during competition are:
long tees, 56, Joel Kelly
short tees, 68, Josh Rippie
Full results of both events in the club's threads: http://www.pdga.com/discussion/forumdisplay.php?f=237
Maybe these records will fall this weekend at the Battle of Slaughter Creek coming up this weekend, the first PDGA tournament out at Circle C in a long, long time. More info on the tournament thread: http://www.pdga.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=31782

Special Request: Please keep an eye out for two stolen baskets, they were stolen from the Weatherford DGC on Saturday, June 20th around 10pm.
The descriptions are as follows, both are DGA Mach III's. The first one is the practice basket with the DGA logo on the nuber plate and various stickers on the pole inside the chain assembly. The second is Hole 18's basket with the number 18 in bright red on the number plate.

The Sunday Services mini at Circle C is now going to be on EVERY SUNDAY!
Also, the entry for Pros is going up to $10. It will stay at $8 for Advanced and Intermediate Divisions.
Everything else stays the same: still 8:30 a.m. sign-up, 9:00 a.m. tee off; still an optional $2 ace pot, with $1 going to the 'carry-over' ace pot and $1 going to a weekly ctp just after the round; still doing the Am payout in Disc Nation Bucks.
Thanks Pat!!!

We recieved word from the park supervisor at Circle C that there are some very aggressive ground hornets on hole #10 at Circle C. The city has flagged off the area and will be treating it, but possibly not for another few days. So if you are playing out there, be sure to avoid that area; apparently the hornets have attacked some golfers already.
