Somehow I think classic rock and prog rock are popular....I wonder why. I'm more of a metal person myself. Death metal, black metal, prog metal, the works.

Wow! I can't believe all the rap lovers. I like a little bit of all kinds of music but mainly listen to hard rock. Some of my favorites are Korn,Audioslave,Pantera,Tool,Disturbed,Godsmack,Li nkin Park,Metallica,Rage Against the Machine etc.....and classics like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, AC/DC,Van Halen,Jethro Tull,Joe Walsh,Ozzy etc....etc....
I like a little bit of rap but not very much. I like it when it is mixed with hard crunching guitar licks like "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn" from the Beastie Boys or "Bah Wah Ta Bah" from Kid Rock.
On the other hand when chilling out I really like the other extreme like Norah Jones & Enya. :)

I know I'm going to get some flak, but here goes, in no particular order:

Vince Guaraldi (when I'm feeling blue, it usually picks me up)

Jean-Michel Jarre (great synth music to mellow out to - used to play in background when I was studying in college)

Gregorian chants (yes, really. I only have one LP, and I can't sing with it because I don't know Latin. I gotta be in a particular mood to play it, though)

Devo (great for first thing in the morning to get your motor runnin', especially "Uncontrollable Urge")

That's enuf fodder for now...

I like all types of music by talented musicians. The type of music I listen to at any moment mostly depends on my mood. However, Prince can always put me in a sexy, self-confident mood. We are flying to Ft Lauderdale and missing the Paul Giles Tournament to go to the concert there because the best tickets in Dallas were sold out by the time I got home from the Lewisville T10 last Saturday.
When I'm having a bad day at work, nothing is better than John Lennon.
On a good day at work, I prefer progressive rock.
If I have a bad headache nothing is better than Mozart.
B B King is great for a rainy day.
Really hard metal is good for while cleaning the house. Dedset comes to mind.
Jazz is great while studying or reading.

Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duke (not Gary) Ellington said, "All music that sounds good, is good."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Actually, the 'famous' Ellington quote was "There are only two kinds of music; good and bad."

Hmmm, I seem to recall from Burns' JAZZ series that [second] quote was from Satchmo, not the Duke...if not those words, he certainly expressed the idea prior to Mr. Ellington...speaking of the Duke, his performance at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival is called by some "the greatest concert ever," and after having listened to "At Newport," I don't personally agree, but it's vital, 5-star stuff. Maximum elegance, AND it swings!!!

p.s. anybody interested in trading Jazz, Blues, or Psychedelic music would be hard-pressed to find a better/more ready-able-and-willing partner than m'self. Heck, I GIVE 'em away most of the time!!!

slo
Mar 12 2004, 06:53 AM
I've been enthralled with music ever since I saw the Beatles live on the Ed Sullivan show [Feb.'64], and 'music lover' is right behind 'artiste' [and ahead of athlete/disc golfer] as a signpost of self-identity...and I consider it a nigh-duty to help turn others on to what pops my weasel. In that vein, here are some of my current picks, which though not exactly new, might be new to you:

Blues: 'Down on Stovall's Plantation' by Muddy Waters; A.K.A. "The Complete Plantation Recordings 1941-1942. If you like the Blues, and I mean THE Blues, A.K.A. Delta Blues, this one is indispensable. It was recorded before Mr. McKinley Morganfield [Muddy] drifted up the Miss sip to Chicago, and is chunkified a bit by the interview interludes, but it sounds great for a 40's recording...much cleaner than the Johnson or Patton stuff, and just as pure.

Jazz: If you haven't heard the name "Ornette Coleman" by now, you are w-a-a-a-a-y overdue to hear this cat...he's an obvious genius on the sax, operative word being obvious. Johnny Griffin was faster, and 'Trane was more spirtitual, but Ornette can bop just as hard as Bird, and is every bit as inventive...and much more visionary. So if you're just thinking of dabbling in Jazz, go ahead and pick up a copy of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" first [no way to go wrong with that], then pick up anything by Coleman from the 50's or 60's [esp. '59-to-'61], except perhaps "Free Jazz"...that might be too intimidating, unless you're already keen on 'Trane's aharmonic stuff. My recommendation: "Change of the Century," where he's joined by cornetist Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Billy Higgins...the most formidable quartet ever? Gets my voteI hardly ever agree with anything Rolling Stone magazine has to say, but here we concur: a 7, on a 5 scale rating.

Psychedelic: Psychedelia started in Los Angeles [not Francisco like most everybody connotes], but the FIRST psychedelic band from the City was NOT the Grateful Dead, Big Brother, or even the Airplane, but a little-known band called The Charlatans [note: NOT the Charlatans U.K. !!!], who due to mismanagement never had their work released until long after they had broken up. Don't think aimless, super-distorted acid rock--In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida this is not--; they actually played Western/Folk music...it was their approach to the songs which made their sound. It's not [very] distorted, or even tweaked, but so...unexpected. They have quite a few releases/repacks by now, but the most-complete is "The Amazing Charlatans. Don't pick this up as an intro to Psychedelia, or even 60's music, but if you already like early Dead and/or J.A., you owe it to yourself to listen to the band which inspired those guys.

Tomorrow[?]: The best in recent music videos.

That's a very eclectic roster, Brian; to the point it's a tad surprising to NOT see Zappa listed. With only one Jazz artist ['Trane], I'm guessing you're not into bop, but towards the 'cool' spectrum?

Man, after all my shameless promotion, 97x is signing off for good at midnight tonight! :( Don't know if any of you ever checked it out. It's not what I'd call my favorite music, but their independence is what attracted me (my little guilty pleasure). They tell you about the bands, the DJs know what they're talking about, and they featured local bands (a BIG plus, IMHO). They reminded me of the underground nature of some of the first FM stations in the late '60's (I'm dating myself, here). Now, even the webcast is signing off.... Some corporation bought it, and we all know what kind of playlists to expect from corporate radio.
Has anyone tried XM radio yet? I bought it two weeks ago, and there are three stations I really dig- Squizz, Ethyl, and Deep Tracks. Also like the idea of listening to radio on those disc golf road trips! Kinda reminds me of early FM. We'll see.
Oh, well, gotta go, gotta listen- to the last night of broadcasting from one of the last great indy stations in the world.

Only one thing I wish XM would do: supply band and album information. I wouldn't mind a DJ just telling me pertinent info, but DJ's always think they're more important than the music. I guess that's why I got it, just music.
Our little oasis of indie music officially died last night at midnight. 97x is no more. It wasn't necessarily my favorite music, just a cool alternative to the same ol' same ol' on FM. I can find the same tunes on XM at XMU, Ethyl, and Unsigned. The station that replaced it sounds just like two other stations here in town :mad:Good thing for XM. I like deep tracks, too. They play older rock artists' stuff old and new. Kinda like trippin' back in time...

I'm grateful for all the suggestions of new bands, as I've pretty much ignored the radio [except Jazz stations, and that's mostly older stuff] since 1981; I could listen to Jazz or 60's rock [or new Rock by guys from the 60's ][mostly by guys IN their 60's!!!] for the rest of my days, but good music is just that, so thanks again...

...that being said, back to the 60's: Has anybody seen [or even heard of] the latest DVD by Soft Machine?!? I've insinuated [either here, or in another music thread] that the Psychedelic movement started in Los Angeles; I may have to eat my words, as I just found out these cats [led by Daevid (sic) Allen, who's also had a solo career] hail back to 1964! [well, maybe it started independently in more than one place...like me coming up with the term "Headrick" for a shot thwarted by the 'lid'...there's a similar theory about the beginning of Homo Sapiens...].

Anyways, on this disc Soft Machine is joined by Arthur Brown [remember "Fire" by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown? same guy...] as MC, AND David Gilmore. Now, I was never a huge Floyd fan, and I prefer their work with Syd Barrett, anyways, but I'm going to have to re-evaluate by opinion on the status of Mr. Gilmore in the pantheon of Rock guitar mavens...no, he doesn't 'shred'; he doesn't 'rip' or 'wail', but the guy's playing [here] is absolutely, positively...SICK!!!

Check this one out if you get the chance...it doesn't have quite the psychedelic post-production of the latest Electric Prunes' gig, but some of it is disturbingly surreal. Just short of a 'Spinal Tap' rating, due to [a tad of] self-indulgent hokiness by Mr. Allen.

Did I mention David Gilmore sits-in? A must have for Floydophiles...

...in the tray, right now: Giving the new re-package of Moby Grape a Spin [kick-[*****] Western-tinged {non-blues based} Rock 'n' Roll]...released this Groundhog Day; sounds rougher, with studio chatter, and more echo than previous mixes [2 discs; a best-of]...this may not win over the casual listener, but it's invaluable to those of us who already consider their first album one of the tops in the 60's.

Good Luck!!!

Actually, Saturdays on the Jazz station here [KJAZ, ni KLON, the self-described top Jazz station, period] they play something called 'Soul Jazz' after the Blues program. This idiom has elements of R&B, Rock, Jazz, and [duh] Soul music...it's fun trying to 'name' the influences.
The advise being: Not to try and find this station, but to see if the one[s] there have 'specialty' shows during the week, highlighting 'different' stuff. Those listings are often in that area's Sunday paper.

Finally, someone who has heard of Dream Theater and Spocks Beard!! Just saw DT on the "Train of Thought" tour. Paid $250 for the "Platinum" experience. It was great. For $250 you got to sit in the front row, you get a special t-shirt, a VIP laminate that allows you access to backstage. After the show you get to meet the band and they hand you a signed picture of the band. We stood around talking music with the band for 45 min., and had them sign other things as well. Totally great experience.

Blind Joe Death
by John Fahey...AKA John Fahey vol. 1 Blind Joe Death...AKA The Legend of Blind Joe Death...AKA The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death. AKA, the work Fahey recorded in 1959, then re-recorded, and re-re-recorded in the sixties...simply amazing, this man's abilities on the acoustic guitar...at times he seems to be in control of the squeeks/buzzes, even, in the entire statement of his compositions. I can't believe I heard it but recently.

Songs from 1967 I've heard sound 'better', cleaner at least, than the 1963 versions, but those earlier ones just have a "vibe" about them...a feeling that something monumental, essential, life-changing, even, is happening, but done with such 'aw, schucks' aplomb...highest possible rating.

Oh yeah, it would get thrown in the 'Folkie' pile, if one had to discriminate.

Yeah, Ry Cooder is responsible (i think) for bringing Ali Farka Toure's sound to the west. I got to see him at womad one year with a group of griots from West Africa and it was truly amazing. The reason that all the recordings are colaborations is probably because his true heritage and syle is live performance. Yeah, it's too bad Zappa favoured Ainsley Dunbar in the early-'70's; li'l Danny drumming for the Mothers would have been a supergroup for the ages...

OK, different approach: In this years' Rolling Stone 'top 100 Rock albums' list, what was the top 'non-Beatle' entry?

...and which album was this a "response" to?!?

...and, how annoying was the spelling error in this post? :D

Rolling Stone? They probably said Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys. Don't ask me why everybody @ Rolling Stone says it was a great album they must be deaf or just stupid.

Hey, no worries  My problem is that I need to dig through some recent MNE journals and what not to seek out some new bands/music. I've been stagnant in the music field for far too long.

Right, and right...RS is the 'People' magazine of rock journalisim; but it's the one everybody's heard of; I use it more as a jumping-off point, than a point of reference.

By the way, it was either Revolver #2 and Pet Sounds #3, or the other way around. Call me deaf and/or stupid, but I agree with the masses here...It's hard to describe what the BB's actually do, but when they do it right, it hits you hard, and it's magic...

...the second part of the answer to the trivia question would evidently be Rubber Soul ...I have to say 'evidently' because I'm going by the release dates provided by my mediaplayer Billboards from the 60's to reference], Pet Sounds was released before both Revolver, and that other Beatles album we cretins favour.

One more last tidbit, before I re-enter my tone-deaf 60's reverie: I just happened to be watching the Little League World series the other day...this is for kids 12 and under, remember. During the introductions, they made references to the players' favorite foods, movies, music, etc. Out of the 12+ members of one team which were being introduced, only two favorite bands were mentioned...can you quess the favorite bands of these 11-12-year-old boys [from either R.I. or N.H.]?!?

Beatles for one, Beach Boys for the other. True.

slo
Aug 19 2004, 06:53 PM
*sigh*

...although I find it disappointing, and a tad disturbing, that both Joe Rolling Stone Reader, AND the demographic of 11&12-year old boys are more eager to talk about these oldschool bands than my DG community, here's one I'm sure Morgan wouldn't lump into the Punky Meadows-Worshiper category: Lather, by Frank Zappa. The release date is 1996-9-24, but it's new to me. Also, there is an umlaut over the 'A', but I can't format suchly. I'm guessing it's more towards LAH-thur in pronunciation.

...anyways, I have but the most-highly recommended disc, #3, and I can say indubitably that:
1. Frank is one smokin' guitarist, and
2. Some of the stuff here is the hottest free jazz music I've heard in some time!

I don't have all the story, but it was conceived as an 8-sider back in the vinyl era...I have no real clue why it's release was delayed decades.

Can anybody embellish this thread?

Well, Frank Zappa is dead...he was one bad ***** on the six-string; everytime I hear something new [to me] by the man, I'm blown-away...I'm thinking he's one of the more underrated instrumentalists, period. Maybe his wacky, mercury-poisoned-persona obfuscates that?

Right now, I'm listening to the first disc of his 3-disc Lather [pronounced, "LEATH-er"].

...I've also got a 3-disc set called "Object Project" of Zappa music by [this is a guess] Mother alumni, but can't find it in the 'guide'.

I would care to wager we are the only ones listening to AMT on this board. Indeed, they are amazing live. I have seen them here in Japan. It's a trip to watch the chick smoke 5 cigs at a time throughout the entire show while tinkering with inane instruments. They are definitely more of a live band than studio. Kinda hard to compare them to anyone else. Boredoms, maybe? Mono (also from Japan).

!!! is a funky rock-type outfit. Big fat beats, thumping bass. Dance music for hipsters, I guess.

I keep hearing about the Black Keys but haven't gotten around to checking them out. One of these days. Too much music, so little time.

If you even know who Leslie West/Mountain is you must be a greybeard. Around here that's a good thing. Since the Mule's forte is a jam format it's entirely possible that Leslie West has played with them at some point, in fact a lot of Warren's live recordings become a who's who of session players, guitarists (especially bass), bluesmen, and on and on......ala "The Dead". He's a busy boy - front man for Gov't Mule, lead for "The Allman Brothers", lead for "The Dead", as well as an increasing amount of solo stuff. No idea how he gets it all done. But, no, Mule is all Warren Haynes, Matt Abts and various others. PM me if you want/need details. Jamie

Sorry, man. I couldn't find where this thread was located. Always forget there's a misc. forum way below all the clubs.

Anywho, I know nothing about this 12-Girl Band. Perhaps you could fill me in on this one.

As for recommendations. Not sure what exactly you like. I like a wide variety of stuff but mostly into (but not exclusive to) classic power-pop, alt.country/Americana/Roots, 60's psyche/garage and anything politically-oriented right now. Perhaps some mix-swapping is due here. I'm always for that.

They do not check my discs here in Nippon as my home course is on a military base. I don't fall under JP rules in that regard (and thankfully so). I'm a good ways from another course. Tried driving to a course up a bit north that was listed in the PDGA directory but it's no longer there (and no longer in the directory). Thought about going down to the JP Open few weeks ago but couldn't snatch any of my friends away from drinking for the weekend.

beat...glad you found your way back! :) And thanks for sharing a bit of your experiences, there.

Except for the alt. country, which I'm not exactly sure is constituted by, it sounds like we have pretty similar tastes...I'll be PM'ing you with my list, yea, verily. Lots of Jazz.

beat, all: In case you haven't noticed by now, I'm a 'Greybeard' rooted in the mid-late 1960's. Why even mention that? Why even discuss music on a disc golf site?

Well, besides the convenience, I'm keen of the idea of becoming more familiar with the posters...if somebody keeps mentioning hairbands, I have a good idea I'm not going to be too swayed by their opinions...however, if somebody uses keywords like 'Americana/Roots, 60's psyche/garage', I feel like Pavlov's dog!!! :p :p :p

12-Girl Band: I've just seen the hype on bus-stop billboards, and one short snippet on TV. 12 Nipponesse teens playing Pop[?] on traditional instruments...prolly their version of "Menudo", but I was curious...

OK Doc picture this. A couple of summers ago I had only recently discovered Indigenous. My wife and I were down in Atlanta to go to a Jonny Lang concert at Chastain Park, a killer outdoor amphitheater venue. Fran's brother had set up the weekend, bought the tickets etc. and when I asked he did not know who the openers were. Walked in the gate cold, saw a vendor set up with hats, t-shirts etc one of which had the "Circle" logo on it. Oooooooo....this could be good. Sure enough Indigenous opened and brought the place down doing most everything on "Live at Pachyderm..." Talk about your pleasant surprises. Sure wish they came to the southland more often.
