Ok...let's open this up for debate for fun...taking all 18/21 tees/holes into account.

1. Mozola -- Trees, Water, Roads, and El-uh-vay-shun. (And that's only hole #3...)
2. Wilmont -- Length, Trees, Water, Water Moccasins.
3. Powell -- Trees, Water.
4. MacGregor Longs -- Trees, Matt Hall :)

Jan 28 2004, 09:50 AM
1. Jim Mozola Memorial (grudgingly because it only has 9 baskets.)

2. Bear Branch (Woodlands) most of the same features as Mozola but on 18 holes...just a little farther to get to.

3. Classic 3 (aka Circle 6 :D)pay-to-play, but a great course anyway.

4. Jack Brooks, Powell and Wilmont as long as they are dry, if not, then any other course in Houston!

Jan 28 2004, 10:25 AM
1. Mozola, for the challenge, and view.
2. Willy- DA WOLLY-MONSTER!
3. Powell-challenging, yet possible to have a good round, if you are on.
4. Macgregor-good mix of holes
5. Woodlands-every type shot, is required on varying holes.
6 Classic 3-Can you say Water Hazard?
7. MOFFITT-for the socialness

Jan 28 2004, 12:55 PM
The following ratings make the assumption that the course is dry, the grass is cut, and the weather is PERFECT.......

1. Mozola - The view of the skyline, the uptown feel.......... Probably the only course we have that isn't on land the City couldn't give away. This is not the toughest course in town (close), but will reward a player who has a number of shots to pull from.

2. Wilmont - Houston's toughest course, will reward shot placement and sound decision making. And if you've got control, it will also reward the ability to boom off the tee.

3. Redisigned Powell - Before the redesign I would have put this course below Macgregor Longs, but by combining old holes 6 and 7, placing 18's basket across the water, adding the blind shot hole 17, and making the two wooded holes permanent, this course is now one I love to play, not just one I feel I have to play if the willie is to wet.

4. Macgregor Longs - Fun course that rewards accuracy, length, and a sound putting game.

Sorry, that was my post.

While I'm at it, I guess that should have been redesigned, not redisigned.

Man......... Four First Place votes for Mozola, I wouldn't have guessed that it would turn out that way.....

Jan 28 2004, 01:58 PM
OK I am going to grudgingly enter the fray on this subject. Folks are always asking what courses are must play courses in Houston, so this is from that perspective. I am going with an assumption that the course is dry, the grass is cut, and the weather is nice.......

Tom Bass Complex (36 holes) The Powell and Wilmont offer two world-class courses in the same complex that provide the normal player (someone who throws around 300), the chance to play true golf. Deceivingly difficult, there are many places on these two courses where a non-big arm can play placement golf to score better. The normal player better have a pretty complete game to score under 60 on these courses blind.

Dont be fooled into thinking these courses cannot separate the best from the best either. Pros must have power and finesse to score well here. While you are playing the Wilmont, remember that at the 2002 Pro World Championships, Ken Climo shot a smoking 46 during the semifinal round on this course to put away the 2002 World Championship.

While I love the other courses in the area, you may want to consider skipping them and playing Bass again imo. If seeing new courses is your thing, here are my additional recommendations of other courses that are worthy of the time needed to find them. These are in no particular order

Hitchcock (18 holes) - (south toward Galveston about 40 mins from Bass) offers a very interesting selection of short/technical/trick shots. It is a very fun place to play and you can almost always find someone to play with.

Moffitt Short (18 holes) A traditional pitch and putt. You can smoke this course blind if you are playing decent. There is always someone to play with out at Moffitt. Be sure to play behind the ruts in the tee boxes unless you are wearing cleats. Moffitt long is slightly harder but a little less fun IMO.

MacGregor Long (21 holes) Unlike Moffitt, I prefer the longs at this course. It can be difficult to find them all if you dont snag a local, as they are marked by painted cinder blocks in the ground. Like Jim said, Fun course that rewards accuracy, length, and a sound putting game. The shorts are also fun if you want less of a challenge.

Woodlands Long (18 holes) Very nice course in a pretty little park... The course offers a wide variety of short technical holes with some elevation changes and a lake. Definitely worth a play if you have the time.

Unlike the rest of you, I am NOT a fan of the Mazola course. While it does offer a nice view of downtown, this course is very much a disc eater, always dirty, and generally hard to follow (tee markers missing). The payoff for the view is lost on me by the fact that it is only 9 holes and a disc eater. The nine holes that are there are nice, but mainly because most every hole in town is flat. I personally do not consider this a must hit course, but as you can see above, I may stand alone in that opinion. There is no WAY it should be listed first imo.

Jan 28 2004, 03:55 PM
Mozola isnt my favorite, but it is one of the more difficult ones...especially since it doent see as much play as some of the others. Moffitt is my favorite, yet isnt the most difficult, by far.

Hitchcock totally slipped my mind, and it in the top 3-4 for sure....great mix of holes!!!

Jan 28 2004, 04:14 PM
I once shared your viewpoint Gimp on Mozola, but after playing in two leagues out there this summer, I grew to love the place. The course looked better than I had ever seen it, it was mowed, bum free, and offered a unique challenge. The only discs I lost were either in warm-ups or when I went for it on hole 6.

If I had to have one course and one course only, I would of course choose Wilmont......... Simply because I think it best prepares you for Championship caliber golf. My number one vote for Mozola incorporated a "fun" factor.

jdavidson
Jan 28 2004, 04:15 PM
OH, and the tee-markers had been replaced too.

Jan 28 2004, 04:33 PM
That is good to hear about it being cleaner etc :D

Perhaps it is easier not to lose your discs when you are a Discraft sponsored pro

**Jim you have mail**

tbender
Jan 28 2004, 04:39 PM
Hitchcock slipped by me too....Count the ABC holes and it requires more variance in shots than MacGregor Longs. Definitely qualifies on this list, either as 18 or 21.

Can't comment on the Woodlands or Classic 3 (tried to play it last Saturday :().

I agree with Jim. This last summer Mozola looked better than it ever has from week to week. The bamboo on # 3's box was gone, the tee posts were put back in (I think # 5 was hit by a mower in late summer). HPRD also seemed to keep the thick stuff trimmed more regularly on # 3 and # 6, though more frequent trimming on # 6's window would be nice.

I lost several discs during the leagues (maybe 6), and each one was a bad/very risky shot (aim or technique). I'll cede it being an unforgiving course, but I wouldn't call it a disc eater. You toss one awry, and odds are it isn't coming back.

And the Mozola league ace pot is at $500 ... available again April 7. :D

1. Gotta be Wilmont - sneaky difficult; gotta get your birdies and prevent your 4's and 5's to stop the blowup. Well designed holes, with proper test distances, etc. By far the best in Houston; sorry but Mozola doesn't compare.
2. Lakeside - ya its not permanent, but there are sleeves, and it has to be the second in town by a long shot.
3. All the rest: take your pick. Powell, Moffitt longs, Hitchcock, Woodlands and Mozola are all second tier. Everything else is third tier.

Jan 31 2004, 08:30 PM
I only got to play lakeside once... I really like the powell better though. If you take the different configurations into account I would have to go:

Old Wilmont 21 (with the lake shots)
Wilmont 18
New Powell 18
Lakeside 18 (VERY nice course with a mix of shots)
Tourney 18 (the configuration where Climo shot a perfect round)

Like I said, you don't even have to leave Bass :)

Sleeves were dropped and capped (to keep them from filling up with water, dirt, etc.)

Would be great to use it again, all we have to do to get Harris County's approval...... I'll bet they'll cooperate fine, just like when we ask them to mow the other two courses.

Feb 02 2004, 05:19 PM
Yep, they're out there.

Probably not. The 2 holes that go around the pond next to Tourney central are in a heavy traffic area, due to the playground and the pavilion being close by. I could see playing the holes across the road (#1-8 and the Dragon).

If it wasn't for those 2 holes (plus #9, the lefty hyzer between the road and the little parking lot by Powell #14), I would think we would have a chance to keep the course in full-time.

Again, all subject to the whims of Harris County...

slowmo_1
Feb 02 2004, 05:56 PM
I know 1-3 are right there around the pond but I didn't really think they were in an area all that heavily trafficed. #1 doesn't seem to be unless it's people using the pavilion. #2 really isn't...heck, it hardle takes any land at all. #3 comming back across the pond tees off from by the swings but doesn't really bring the playground into play. The large oak trees guard stuff on the other side of the walking path.

tbender
Feb 02 2004, 06:18 PM
Got the number. To save yourself a copy of your message you have to click the little box above the Submit button.

Heavily trafficed = more traffic than the rest of the park.

What I said is what I've been told. And I could see instances where it's true -- I've had to watch playing Powell #9 with a large group at that pavilion, pond and playground. It also might be a control issue with the Park since the two courses cover the majority of the section.

Great place to hone your long and short skills. Not to mention, it's like a mini vacation every time I get out there.... kind of like being at a State Park.

2. macgregorLONG21......great course to practice tight shots.

3. thePOWELL.....after the redesign this course became almost as enthralling to me as theWILLIE. Score well here and YOU SOMBODY!

Last night at Moffitt League, a group of us (about 20 players) were hanging out near the desk at #1 tee box, and the lifeguard from the swimming pool comes over and tells everyone out there that she had received complaints from the folks at the swimming pool about the disc golfers running around drinking beer out there. She politely, but firmly reminded everyone that alcohol is prohibited in the park and that if anyone is seen drinking out there next week, then authorities will be called.

To answer Mr. Anons question, alcohol in the City Parks is prohibited. If you feel the need to consume on a course, then for everyone's sake, please be discreet and don't carry it around in an obvious container where it is visible...otherwise, someone is liable to get militant about it and you will end up with a pretty hefty fine to pay.

Alcohol is allowed sometimes in the Harris County parks if a permit is obtained in advance. Large groups such as we have at Texas States require that we pay additional funds for mandatory police security.

Jun 15 2004, 03:10 PM
You can openly drink beer at Jack Brooks, its in Galveston county. You might have to share with the locals though... :D

Jun 17 2004, 02:06 PM
Alcohol is not allowed in parks where there are signs posted indicating that alcohol is not allowed. This is the case with most but all Houston parks. There are no signs prohibitting alcohol at the Mozola course.

These signs are routinely ignored by disc golfers and other park users. The last I heard the fine for getting caught is $175.

Jun 17 2004, 02:08 PM
Oops. That second sentence should read "most but NOT all Houston parks."

tbender
Mar 14 2005, 12:56 PM
Given your locations, the Wilmont and the Powell (both in Tom Bass Park) and MacGregor are the closest worth playing.

Other options: Moffitt (not challenging, but the most popular in town) on the Far West side
Mozola (tough little 9-holer Downtown)

If you feel like travelling further:
Jack Brooks (in Hitchcock, down 45 South)
Conroe (up 45 North)
Spring Valley (new PtP ball/disc golf venue in Spring)

woodlands

McDade Park could be called the jewel of the region. Playing in beautiful park that Im told was once a residential area, this course plays over perhaps the nicest setting in the entire Houston area; there are many different species of trees, some that bud in the summer. Most of the holes are par threes but there are a few tweeners that feel like par fours. Theres not much elevation change, but the course does border a water hazard that can come into play. The course makes up for its lack of length with some tight wooded shots, and the balance between lefty/righty and open and woods at this course are just about perfect. The HUGE disc golf bulletin board at the entrance to the course is just about the nicest I've ever seen, and the tee signs and the little signs pointing the way to the next tee are also really well done at this course.

When I'm in town next week and try it out, I'll give my expert opinion. (expertise in number and variety of disc golf courses played, not ability :D)

I have a feeling that the young Houstonian is a little green and hasn't seen real woods courses. (I think there's a reason it's called the 'Finesse' course)

Going to Am Worlds this year? You had better practice your finesse game if you expect to do well at the Hotel and NAU (and to some extent, Thorpe Park) courses.

I love tight courses but this course play with too much luck for example there is a 250ft hol with a 15ft gap the whole way through which is fine but then there is a line of trees 40ft in front of the basket causing even good shots to be kicked away and ok one to go through. Jeff you should've seen some holes on thursday before my dad helped clear out some holes. There were 250ft holes with NO chace for a birdie because there were bushed right in front of the tee and about 150' away making the "faiway" impossible to penetrate.

the_kid
Jun 06 2005, 08:13 PM
By the way I like courses where the fairway is defined and maybe a clear 15ft gap to the basket so if you follow the line you will be fine but if you miss you will be puninshed not a hole without a defined faiway and just a spray and pray 250' or less that you are happy with a three or even a four because a brdie is nearly impossinble.

the_kid
Jun 06 2005, 08:22 PM
When Mike(the owner) asked me what a good pro would shoot on the 18 hole format I told him either a 51 or a 62 depending on how lucky they were during the round because you can throw two nearly I dentical shots and one can be kicked into the shule and the other can be parked causing luck to be a major factor on about 7 or 8 holes. Also jeff I think you will like the hole that you have to PUTT to a landing zone 50ft away and then you throw down the faiway. whe we stepped up to the hole everyone said "this is not a golf hole" followed by "why don't they just put the tee box at the landng zone" because it would be a good 320' tunnel dogleg but instead it is a 350' double dogleg with no chance for a reasonable three and I just don't think that you should be happy with a for on a 350' hole or getting a great three on a 240' hole when they should be birdiable. :( :(

I agree matt , defined fairways are great and require a skilled shot but the lucky or non-lucky ones are ridiculous!!

the_kid
Jun 06 2005, 09:32 PM
I just feel that when you have two good shots 2 inches different than each other they should both end up the same. Also I like good shots to be rewarded and bad ones to be punished and not the other way around. My drives were the most accurate on the card(really) but that didn't affect the scores. It is nice to see separation between better players and lesser skilled players and not 1 or two strokes. :(

Tuesday - Missouri City (south)
Wednesday - MacGregor (downtown)
Thursday - TC Jester (NW Loop), Moffitt (West Beltway)

Flex starts between 5 and 6.

Non-league players are welcome to come out and join in. Mozola and MacGregor do run a $3 Stimpy...err Sidebet for Aces. If no Ace, then it's given away via a CTP.

Conroe runs a mini on Saturdays, not sure on what time.
Jack Brooks (Hitchcock, toward Galveston) has a somewhat organized gathering on Sunday, if I recall.

HOW HARD IS IT GETTING TO THESE FROM THE WOODLANDS IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC? :Dand how much is the entry? also who lives in the woodlands area that i might know?

tbender
Jun 15 2005, 03:33 PM
I wouldn't even try to guess how long it would take. Although, it should be easier coming back into Houston than going the opposite direction. The Woodlands is roughly 30-45 minutes from Mozola and MacGregor, with normal traffic (at North Freeway NASCAR speeds).

Our leagues are six week setups. $15 for HFDS members, $20 for non-members, Ace and Mulligan $1 each per week. Placing/Payout is based on your best 4 scores over that time period. Acepots cap at $500, Mulligans become raffle tickets at the end of the league.

At Mozola and MacGregor we do have some folks who couldn't/won't commit to a six week format, so the $3 Ace/CTP sidepot was established for all players, league or not. If some in the sidepot hits an ace, they get the pot. No ace, then a winner-take-all CTP as defined by the previous week's winner.

esalazar
Jun 15 2005, 04:47 PM
I suppose thats the downfall to leagues!! They do not appear very visitor friendly!!

ching_lizard
Jun 16 2005, 10:03 AM
No worries Efrain - league players always welcome visitors and even if you aren't in the league, you can still play with folks that are.

You can also look at it as a $21 chance to take the league's ace pot too! :D

With last week's addition of the Oak Meadows Place course outside of the 290-1960 area, we now have about 25 courses in the Houston metropolitan area! Would've been 26 but Dodson Lake course was pulled. The Oak Meadows Place course is going to turn out to be one Houston's premiere courses.

Is River Grove a worthy course and representative of Houston DG? Is it still in the ground? I notice it is not listed on hfds.org.

I will be coming into town next Thursday 3PM and want to find a course within 30-45 minutes of IAH to play. Is there a better one to suggest?

Is Agnes Moffitt worthwile? It is very close to where I will be staying and I plan to play it late Friday afternoon.

MP757
Nov 02 2006, 11:29 PM
Rivergrove is still in the ground. It is a beast in the woods and is kind of hard to find. I don't think there are maps or tee signs. If you want to play a good course close to the airport play Spring Valley DGC. It is a nine hole ball golf course and an 18 hole disc golf course. The best part is you can play the nine ball golf holes making it a total of 27 disc golf holes.
Moffit is flat, easy and nothing to write home about. Head up the highway and play Oak Meadows if you get a chance. If all else fails there is a nine hole in any direction just pick up a disc and throw you'll probably hit a basket!

Nov 02 2006, 11:35 PM
I've heard that the Kingwood folks aren't very receptive to non-Kingwood residents...the only place to park requires some kind of parking permit.

I'd recommend Oak Meadow. From IAH it's a straight shot around the toll road to 290. Go North/West on 290 about 5 miles and exit at Spring Cypress / Cypress-Rosehill exit.
Take a Left at the second light (called Fry Rd going left) drive down about another 5 miles and right at the end of Black Horse subdivision, turn right at the Bridgeland sign. Follow that around until you come to a stop sign. Make a jog to the right and then a left into Oak Meadow Park. The concrete tee box for #1 is next the bridge by the pavillion.

Post up on the HFDS message board when you're gonna be there and chances are good someone will hook up with ya. You'll also find a color course map there, but with the new tee signs, all of the distances are marked on the signs. Play the Blue tees. Most all of them are the same as the White tees, but there are extended Blue tees for holes: #6, #8, #9, #10 and #12.

Tom Bass is way down on the South side so it's not as close as Oak Meadow. Shoot me a PM and I'll send you back my phone number...if I'm in town I'll try to hook up with you.

suemac
Nov 06 2006, 03:20 PM
Think that's a bit more than five miles from beltway to Fry Rd. Well worth the drive, and be sure to give WARNING bout the fly'n varmits. Didn't you put them at a level eight recently with all the rain and such, Larry?

ching_lizard
Nov 06 2006, 03:36 PM
Yep...and I'm elevating the mosquito alert condition to a level 9 based on yesterday's experience after playing a round out there in the morning.

We talked with 2 groups of players that quit playing because they couldn't stand the swarming mosquitos...even with Off liberally applied! (Our group had to re-apply repellant twice during the round!)

The large (hummingbird sized) mosquitos were out in force yesterday. Wearing a regular t-shirt, I could feel the things bumping into back right through the fabric!

Still having a pretty good water flow rate in the ditch along #6 fairway - and of course the basket at #6 is still in the middle of a swamp. I thought they were supposed to be doing something about that?

Hey Bob! With the sun setting so early these days, it's gonna be a little tough finding a course that you can play on at night.

Unfortunately, Tom Bass is probably "out" because it closes at dark.

What part of town are you staying at, and what part of town are you meeting at during the day?

If you are near the downtown area, then Mozola course is very nice, MacGregor is close to downtown, but probably not a good choice for night-time play.

For night golf courses, Moffitt and TC Jester are both pretty good with enough lights around to be able to find your discs again! :D

THanks for your help.

I will be landing on Sunday the 10th just before noon so I will try to make it out to Tom Bass (it sounds like one of the better ones)by say 1 or 1:30. I am willing to play with anyone...it makes navigating a course easier. I will be packing light of course....but hey it gives me a chance to play in another state.

Be sure to give WARNING bout the fly'n varmits. Didn't you put them at a level eight recently with all the rain and such, Larry?

The mosquitos in Houston are sooooo big.......they use the freeways for landing strips. :D

Let us not forget the first permament course (Tom Bass Regional Park....original nine) and how it came to be. Thank you Houston and thank you John. Ya'll have really come a long way. ;)

Thanks Bob

I hope to be playing by 1 on Sunday

Noey: you basically want to head around to the South of the airport until you hit Beltway8 (toll road). Hopping on is fastest but it will cost you a fistful of change. You can just stay on the feeder road the whole way for free, but you'll hit every traffic ligt.

When you get to Beltway 8, head West. Geez, I'm guessing about 4-5 miles and you really want to hit the underpass right before 288 (another freeway.) Take the U-turn underpass right at 288 and start heading back East on the feeder road but get over to the right. Watch for the Tom Bass Entrance sign on the right and turn in. You have to weave around a bit but when you come to the main circle loop, turn right and follow the loop around 1/4 mile and then turn into a pavillion parking area on your right again. The tee box for Wilmont #1 is by one end of the pavillion there toward the creek.

the_kid
Dec 08 2006, 09:43 AM
Or better yet take the exit after MLK and ride the feeder for about 3/4 mile and there will be a sign telling you how to get to the park. You go left under Beltway 8, keep going stright and turn right into the park.

But work did it to me again. I am now flying into Houston International

Is Tom Bass still the best option figuring I have about 4 hours to get there and play? If so best route there?

Thanks again for all your help.

If you have such little time to play when you arrive in Houston tomorrow, Tom Bass wouldn't be a good suggestion. You will be landing on the north side of the city and Tom Bass is way out to the south end. With the possibilities of grid-lock traffic going through downtown or a long ride around the tollway loop, you wouldn't be able to enjoy the place.

If you're on the north side of town I would suggest:

Spring Valley Golf and Disc Golf Club (http://www.springvalleygolfclub.com/index.htm)
This place is great and you'll leave Houston with a fantastic golf experience.

Hi,

I'll be in Houston 12/28-1/2. I'll be staying at the Sheraton North Houston at George Bush Intercontinental. I hope to squeeze in 1 round. I've got the list above, but which course should I choose?

ching_lizard
Dec 22 2006, 09:57 AM
Hey Lowe - If you only have time for 1 round, then I'd suggest Oak Meadow on the NW side of Houston. From your hotel, take Beltway 8 West (toll road) to US-290. Go North/West toward Austin. About 5-6 miles up 290, watch for exit sign showing two roads: Spring Cypress/Cypress-Rosehill. Exit there, stay on feeder road until 2nd light and turn left. The road name changes to Fry Road at that point. Go past light at old business 290 and notice the signs for the Blackhorse subdivision on your right. Keep going south on Fry Road about 3 miles. Watch for the end of the Blackhorse subdivision. Turn right when you see the huge brick sign that says "Bridgeland." Follow that road back about 2 miles I think and make the first right onto House-Hahl Road. Immediately turn left into the Oak Meadows Park. The tee box for hole #1 is pretty close to the pavillion there.

If you are in town over a Saturday, then I'd recommend that you attend the Commando Mini out there at 9am. Proceeds from the mini go to Texas States. PM me if you need a phone number for a local.

Tell him to pack a sack lunch for the drive, Larry! :D I think you are under estimating the distance.

If you are out by the airport, Spring Valley is right up the road and lots of fun as Dr P has mentioned before.

Oak Meadow is great but a good piece down the road. I know I live on that side of town and it's still a long ways for me! If time is limited, Spring Valley would be a better choice. Rent a golf cart, have some fun and still have time for a cocktail. :D

ching_lizard
Dec 22 2006, 10:25 AM
I'd second that Spring Valley call too...good course but it's a pay-to-play facility. Still, the novelty of getting to rent a golf cart for the round is pretty cool.

Sorry I can't really help with directions to it though...I think it has a website somewhere in the ether-world.

Is Oak Meadow listed in the PDGA Course Directory? If so, what city is it listed under?

suemac
Dec 22 2006, 10:40 AM
It is brand new and not in the book.

But if you take Beltway 8 to 290, head West and follow these directions.

The Spring Cypress/Rosehill/Fry Rd Exit off of 290 that you want is about 5 miles past FM 1960/Hwy 6 Exit.

Exit at Spring Cypress/Cypress Rosehill.
Go to 2nd light and turn left under 290. Fry Rd.
Go past the light at Old Business 290 and notice the Blackhorse subdivision on the right.
Go about 3-4 miles and watch for the end of the Blackhorse subdivision (and golf course) on the right...you should see a huge sign saying Bridgeland on the right, and make a right turn there. Follow that road back 2 miles and then turn right onto House-Hahl Road.
Make an almost immediate left turn into the Oak Meadow Park parking area

Spring Valley sounds easier for me to get to, but personally I'm not that fond of DG on traditional golf courses. They're too open for me, and that makes them boring. I find that playing the greens as OB adds a necessary element of challenge (and maintaining the grounds), but it's gimmicky.

If travel is not a factor which course is better-- Oak Meadow or Spring Valley? WHich would give me the most quintessential taste of Houston disc golf?

suemac
Dec 22 2006, 11:48 AM
Spring Valley is unique in that there is a power 9 with avg length of 550, and a finesse 18 through the woods that surround the bg course.

So, you can get a bit of both.

suemac
Dec 22 2006, 11:50 AM
And the greens are OB on the power nine all the time.

Aaarggh! I played Spring Valley (after playing Oak Meadow) and I lost a disc on the next to last shot of the day! My white glo Roc went into the murky creek on the right side about 50 ft. in front of the basket on hole 18 of the finesse course. I was so bummed!

I wish someone (like Suemac) had told me that there are so many disc eating bogs, black water swamps, and murky creeks. You definitely need to warn people to bring discs there that they don't mind losing!

Hey Lowe! Sorry we didn't hook up while you were here! Is there a way that I can view your reviews without having to give my e-mail address to Google?

I sure would like to read them, but I am hesitant to give my address to Google - I get too much SPAM already!

Most locals know enough not to risk their favorite discs on holes where there is water. I know that I carry a couple of "throw-down" discs for water holes.

Thanks for the offer. That would be very gentlemanly of you! Please email me first, though.

I also lost an old JLS on hole 8 at Oak Meadow, about 20 ft from the shore, but it's gone. That water is opaque and the bottom is gooey mud. I seriously doubt that that one will ever be seen again.

BTW, I absolutely loved the water holes by the lakes at Oak Meadow!!

Ching-

I haven't posted any of my Texas reviews yet. Oak Meadow will be the first, but I've got a couple of others to finish first. It may take a few weeks to get it done. Each review takes at least 2 hours to do.

Were you able to read the reviews from other states?

Ok - I checked out a couple of the other state's courses and found some! Holy smokes!!! I see what you were talking about when you said a round with you could be a little tedious. :D

It looks interesting, but I need to see a review of a course I'm familiar with in order to understand all of it. Let me know when Oak Meadow goes up and I'll be able to follow it pretty closely.

Lowe - Don Young co-designed Oak Meadow but I don't believe that he worked on the Spring Valley design.

Andi and I surveyed Spring Valley originally for Fly-18 and roughly mapped out many of the holes on the finesse course. But I didn't have anything to do with the course installation.

Here are some messages that I just posted on the HFDS Message board in the "Oak Meadow Place" thread:

The water holes-- 6, 8, 9, 10-- are fantastic! The lake on 8-10 is gorgeous!! I'm pretty tough in my evaluations, but I rated the Terrain and Beauty of these four holes all as 10. Here are my Overall Quality ratings (0-10 scale) for the Blue tees on these holes:

6 = 8
8 = 9
9 = 10
10 = 7

It's Very rare that I give a hole a 9 Quality Rating, and EXTREMELY rare that I rate a hole as a 10. I don't think I've played more than 20 holes on >180 courses that I would rate as a 10.

IMHO these 4 water holes carry the course. They gave me the euphoric feeling that great holes produce.

Soon I'll be posting my complete review at my Google group "DG Course Reviews".

Thanks for your good work and a most enjoyable round for an NC golfer!

----------------------------------------------------------

I hope you can forgive the hubris of an outsider from NC coming in and offering an evaluation of your course. My hobby is evaluating DG courses, so I'll offer my perspective for you to do with as you wish.

Here are a few relevant stats about the Difficulty of the Blue tees layout: (Sorry, but I probably won't be able to spend much time explaining how I derived these numbers. If you're interested you'll be able to find a fuller explanation when I post my Excel spreadsheet on my "DG Course Reviews" group.)

Course Level: Blue
Blue Close Range (CR) Par: 62
Holes with Blue CR par over 3:
6 = 5
8 = 4
9 = 4
10 = 4
11 = 4
12 = 5
(That's quite a cluster on 8-12.)
Estimated SSA: 55.9
Blue Scoring Average (BSA): 62.0
BSA - Blue CR Par: 0.0 (This is quite rare.)
Most difficult hole: 7 with a Blue Score Avg (BSA) of 3.43 on a par 3.

Course Difficulty Rating: 9.0 (on a scale of 0-10)

Using two other measures of difficulty the Blue tees layout came out as 14th and 16th most difficult of the >180 layouts that I've evaluated. This can mostly be attributed to the length, OB hazards on the water holes, and tight fairways on the woods holes (13-16). Well done on making a challenging course!

-----------------------------------------------------------

An Excel spreadsheet with hole by hole data, and a pdf with the Overall Eval will be posted to "DG Course Reviews" as soon as they are finished.

Sorry I posted after reading the Spring Valley part. 55.9 is close but maybe a point too high. Anyway my rounds at OM are usually boring with like 3(2's) and 3(4s)every round for an even par. :D

I see Oak Meadow as being in 3 sections:
1) Holes 1-5. Par 3s of 314-394 ft., with mixed fairways of trees and grass.
2) Holes 6-12. Has the water holes and the longest holes with par 4s and par 5s.
3) Holes 13-18. Par 3s ranging from 277-397 ft. Four woods holes and the rest mixed.

I think that variety is essential to the enjoyment of a course and this course has plenty of variety.

Is this from the Blue tees? If so, then those 54s are great shooting and they are below the SSA, so those rounds would be rated above 1000. Par at OM is certainly higher than 54.

Andi designed it but it has become so nice because of the work that Mike has put in. I know when the course was installed there were some horrid holes. One of these was the finess hole in the middle of the golf course as it used to have a big bush right infront of the tree so all you could do was throw out to the track and play for a three. Mike took some players advice and cleared the bush and a tree or two making the 330' jole a nice straight shot with OB on the right.

So Andi wins by default.
